GLOBAL COLLABORATION WITH MIE UNIVERSITY This winter, Atsushi Inoue, PhD and professor of management information systems, and David Gorton, director of outreach for the EWU Center for Entrepreneurship, traveled to Mie University in Tsu, Japan, to conduct a seminar titled, “From Idea to Pitch” with a diverse group of 14 graduate and undergraduate students. The culminating activity was a pitch contest presented before a panel of outside judges. The top prize in the contest was an allexpenses paid trip to Eastern Washington University to participate in the second qualifying event of our Eagles’ Nest Pitch Contest on Feb. 13. The winning team, Kuria Hasegawa, international relations major; Yuki Kamiya, engineering major; and Kosuke Nakamura, bio resources major, combined their expertise to create an innovative device that utilizes light waves to reset the brain’s sleep cycle in order to combat fatigue from jetlag or night shift work. The students were accompanied by faculty and staff members from Mie University, who have been working closely with CBPA faculty to develop mutually beneficial global experiential learning opportunities. Mie University representatives also plan to attend ISASE-MAICS 2018 – the 4th International Symposium on Affective Science and Engineering, and the 29th Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference, which will be held at EWU Spokane May 31June 2, 2018.

GIVING JOY

CBPA

As part of the National Day of Giving each November, EWU now celebrates Giving Joy Day. This is a fabulous way of acknowledging what people are doing in support of their communities, and encouraging individuals and organizations to help others in ways that are meaningful to them. One of the areas that’s highlighted by Eastern is giving to scholarships. Tuition, books and fees for a single academic year is now over $7,000 per student, and this does not include room and board or other living expenses, which takes the total to more than $21,000 annually. Many students graduate with significant debt, even if they are also working to pay their way through school. Giving to scholarships helps significantly to lighten the financial burden for our students. Our students are hardworking, dedicated and humble. Many are working adults with families and other responsibilities. When I was leaving campus one day, I witnessed a young woman pull into the parking lot with her son buckled up in the back seat. As they got out of the car, dad met them, gave mom a kiss and sent her off to class, then he paid the parking for her and assumed care of their little boy. It was heartwarming to see their dedication to family, to education and to a bright future. Many of our alumni and friends of the College of Business and Public Administration have had similar struggles to get through school, pay the bills and raise a family. Many of us are now in a position to give back, pay it forward or plant the seed that will help others to succeed on their journey. Giving to scholarships not only lightens the financial load for students and helps them to focus more on their studies, but it shows that others believe in them and are cheering them on. For more information on supporting students through scholarships and other areas, please contact Carolyn Wika, Director of Philanthropy, at 509.359.6132 or via email at cwika@ewu.edu. Thank you for helping our Eagles to soar high and strong.
