EASTERN 2016 VOLLEYBALL Welcome! WELCOME to Eastern Washington University. You’ve come to a very special place. At Eastern, our remarkable Eagle family is focused on students’ success. An Eastern education is about more than success in college and success in a career. We prepare students for life. That’s why Eastern students work directly with faculty on research projects, learn as interns in businesses, schools, and organizations across the state, and change the world through their service. You see the success of the Eastern experience in our 13,000 students and more than 100,000 alumni. And you see it in our highly competitive athletic teams. EWU student athletes have now won the Big Sky Conference Presidents’ Cup two years in a row. The Presidents’ Cup is especially meaningful to me as it reflects outstanding academic success as well as athletic accomplishment. Visit our web site (www.ewu.edu) and visit our beautiful campuses in Cheney and Spokane. Or stop by our centers at Bellevue College and other locations around the state. We’d be delighted to introduce you to the EWU Eagle family and show you what makes Eastern so remarkable. Thank you for visiting Eastern. Enjoy the game!
Dr. Mary Cullinan, EWU President

Northern Colorado avenged the loss in Cheney, as they picked up a five-set victory in Greely, Colorado on Nov. 11, 2015. Improved Offense The Eagles are starting to find some rhythm offensively, as they are coming off back-to-back matches where they hit .250-or-better. Last Thursday, Sept. 22, against Montana, Eastern posted a .250 hitting percentage in the four-set victory. It was the first time in four matches EWU had collected an above .200 hitting percentage in a match.

EWU got off to an 8-2 Big Sky Conference record with King as the interim head coach, which led to the interim tag being removed on Oct. 28. The Eagles nished the 2015 regular season at 14-14, and posted their rst winning season in the Big Sky since 2011 with a 9-7 record in league play. Aer snts in Cheney in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, King was hired as the program’s associate head coach prior to the 2014 season. While serving in an interim role in 2014, he coached senior Kelsey Julian to All-Big Sky honors and saw Eastern receive the presgious AVCA Team Academic Award for its stellar performance in the classroom. “Since rst having been given the opportunity by Pamela Parks to coach at EWU as an assistant, I’ve always thought it would be a great place to be a head coach,” King connued. “The values, mission and tradion of the university and the athlecs department are a perfect t that match my values and belief system. The beauty of our campus and the enthusiasm of everyone here makes this university very special.” King served as an assistant coaching at Eastern during the 1998, 1999 and 2002 seasons. The Eagles went a combined 77-16 in those seasons, winning a Big Sky regular season tle in 2002 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and 1999. “I believe EWU can once again become a top-er volleyball program, and we are well on our way already with making this happen,” said King. “Eastern has so much to offer student-athletes, and I believe talented recruits will see the opportunies available to them here with our top-ight educaon, wonderful facilies and rst-class support. They can truly have a tremendous college experience. We have already taken steps to create a winning culture and making the program compeve again.” Prior to his return to Cheney in 2014, King spent the 2013 season as the top assistant at Winthrop, helping it to a winning record and a trip to the Big South Conference Tournament. Under his tutelage, three players received Big South All-Conference honors, including a rst-team selecon. Before King’s snt at Winthrop, he served as the associate head coach at Portland for the previous three seasons aer working as an assistant coach for the Pilots. He helped guide Portland to its best record in West Coast Conference play in 15 years, and brought in two naonally-ranked recruing classes according to PrepVolleybal.com. King spent the 2000 season at Concordia and the 2001 season at UAB and also has extensive coaching experience at the high school level, coaching volleyball at Southridge High School in Portland, Ore., before leading David Douglas High School, also in Portland, from 2004-08. King played club volleyball at Santa Barbara City College (1994) and Oregon State (1996-97) before earning a bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon in 2000 followed by a master’s degree from Concordia in 2003. King’s wife, Erin, was a four-me naonal champion in synchronized swimming at Ohio State and later served as the head coach of the Puerto Rico Naonal Team, winning two gold medals in synchronized swimming at the World Master Games.

ll Eastern home and away football and men’s basketball games may be heard in the Spokane/ Cheney area on 700-AM ESPN, www.700espn.com & via mobile phone app. (search for “700 ESPN the ticket” and download app). Games may also be heard via www.tunein. com and tunein’s mobile apps by searching for 700 ESPN. Larry Weir returns as the play-by-play announcer for both football and men’s basketball games, and Paul Sorensen will handle football analysis and color commentary. Weir and Sorensen will also host weekly coaches shows live from Northern Quest Casino and Resort on Mondays at 6 p.m. Pacific time throughout the season. The 700 ESPN staff will continue to have a greater presence at football games, including broadcaster Keith Osso, who will serve as an analyst and sideline reporter at home games. Weir, selected as the State of Washington Broadcaster of the Year in both 2015 and 2016, will return for his 26th season as the voice of the Eagles in football, having broadcast all but one of EWU’s 297 games in that span. The only game he missed was a 2005 playoff game at Northern Iowa when he was broadcasting Eastern’s basketball games in Alaska. Weir has also spent 23 seasons calling men’s basketball action for the Eagles from 1991-2009 and again from 2012-16. Basketball was handled for two seasons from 2010-12 by Dennis Patchin, an Idaho State University graduate. Patchin has been with the KXLY family of stations for over 30 years and has covered everything from the Washington State Cougars to the Seattle Mariners. During his time at KXLY, Patchin was also the voice of the Gonzaga Bulldogs on radio for four seasons, during which the Zags made three-straight Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Patchin, Osso and Rick Lukens are hosts of their popular sports talk show from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on 700 ESPN. Producer Steve “The Wingman” Pry and the station’s technical staff also help with Eastern broadcasts. Weekly coaches shows feature EWU head football coach Beau Baldwin and men’s basketball head coach Jim Hayford.
