COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the spring 2019 issue of the College of Business and Public Administration newsletter! It gives me great pleasure to share many of our college’s recent activities and success stories. Part of our college’s mission is to develop students who contribute to the evolving public and private sector environments. Through engagement and interaction with the business community, local government, tribes and global society, we create opportunities that not only benefit our students, but also contribute to the health and prosperity

of our community. In this issue of CBPANews, we highlight some of the new and innovative ways in which our faculty, staff and students have been working with businesses to make a positive impact in our community. One example is The Ideathon, a collaboration with Microsoft and Greater Spokane Inc. in which employers, students, faculty and staff participated in an interactive, problem-solving sessions to address the skills gap related to data analyst and data science roles facing employers, and how to create a stronger Data Analyst talent pipeline in Eastern Washington. Ideas generated during the event will ultimately benefit students and employers in the fast-growing field of analytics. CBPA students often have opportunities to participate in service learning activities, where they are able to work on real-life projects. Recently our students worked with and provided services to Spokane County, the Associated Press Western Election Center and Washington state. Through curricular and co-curricular activities, students managed investment portfolios and created and pitched business ideas. Further, our students traveled nationally and internationally to participate in symposiums, conferences and competitions. In addition, our college is fortunate to have the support of an active College Advisory Board. This year we combined our two advisory boards (Puget Sound and local) into one advisory board with representation from both sides of the state. We were honored to add several new members to the board this year. Our Advisory Board members bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from a variety of business disciplines, and they work to support the college in initiatives ranging from strategic planning to special events and fundraising. It is with great pride that I share with you some of the recent success stories from our CBPA faculty, staff, students and alumni. As always, I invite you to contact me if you have any comments, suggestions or stories that you would like to share. Sincerely,

Ahmad Tootoonchi, PhD Dean, College of Business and Public Administration

GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

Over the summer, Atsushi Inoue and Dave Gorton traveled to Mie University in Tsu, Japan to conduct the second entrepreneurship seminar titled, “From Idea to Pitch,” with a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students. The purpose for the course, delivered in both Japanese and English, is to introduce Mie students to sound ideation and communication techniques for a startup company idea. The culminating activity was a pitch contest presented before a panel of outside judges. The seminar was an exchange activity related to the Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchange, between the College of Business and Public Administration and the Mie University Graduate School of Regional Innovation Studies. The purpose of the agreement is to facilitate faculty, staff and student exchanges, foster joint research and educational activities and create joint lectures and symposia. Travel costs were funded under a grant obtained by Mie through the efforts of Norihiro Nishimura, VP for Social Cooperation, Regional Area Strategy Center. We are excited about this collaboration, and continue to work on ideas of mutual interest between EWU and Mie. Aaron Kriewald, a student in International Business 470, traveled to Macerata, Italy to participate in the X-Culture Symposium. Students in IBUS 470 participate in X-Culture by working on business projects with groupmates from around the globe. Teams who score highly on their projects, receive high peer evaluations and produce good reports are invited to apply to attend the symposium. For the symposium, students create and present real-world business strategies that are evaluated by the companies themselves. Aaron chose to create a business strategy for the Macerata Opera Festival, and his team won the competition! Aaron’s trip was funded, in part, with an award from the Provost’s Student Travel/Conference award.

EWU Young Professionals Network The EWU Young Professionals Network hosts a variety of events throughout the year, designed to provide opportunities for students and professionals at all levels to network and engage with other Eagle alumni in the community. Recent events included Speed Networking – Master Your Elevator Speech in which participants engaged in an evening of one-on-one structured networking. They practiced networking, learned to get acquainted with new people and broadened their networks.

Auditing students recently participated in a service learning opportunity with Spokane County. The students participated in the Guardian Mentoring Program audits conducted by Spokane County, and were able to engage in actual audit work, bringing relatability and understanding to their course material. EWU students helped reduce the backlog of audits from nine weeks to three weeks in just one quarter, and two students who participated have agreed to continue their audit work as volunteers. Spokane County is excited to continue this partnership with EWU and our students. More than 250 EWU students staffed the Associated Press Western Election Center, helping to provide clients all around the world with immediate results of voting in the general election. A number of students also helped AP gather late returns from many counties in the states covered. Participating in this event provides students with a unique look into the complexity of how one major part of our journalistic infrastructure makes a huge impact on public understanding of what is truly happening in the world. Finance students in Vinson Cai’s Portfolio Management class received a check for $3,782.15 to the EWU Foundation, representing a share of earnings from their SIP portfolio. The SIP portfolio is sponsored by D.A. Davidson Investment of Great Falls, Montana, a regional investment banking firm. Each year, the students manage a $50,000 portfolio, and any earnings above 5% are split between EWU and D.A. Davidson. Funds earned through this program are used to build the endowed balance for the Bill Wynd Scholarship.

Three IRS-certified student volunteers from the Beta Alpha Psi chapter of Eastern Washington University contributed 75 hours at the Spokane County United Way – Volunteer Income Tax Assistant tax site. The organization prepared more than 4,985 returns for low to moderate income individuals, families and seniors. Their efforts resulted in bringing $5.8 million in returns back into our community.

They learned their way around the exciting city of Reno while experiencing newfound friendships. Improving the Eta Phi Chapter and enhancing its leadership was the ultimate goal of those attending from Eastern Washington University. Earlier in the year, Nick Elliot, Big Sky Manager of CED, spoke about developing professional skills. In addition to the PBLI, AKPsi participated in many professional, service and career events, including: • Bonfire to greet the new school year • Connection Night • Dodgeball • Green Bluff Touring • Friendsgiving/Secret Santa • Bowling • Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraiser • Spill the Cocoa and Games • Big Sky Manager of CED Presentation • PJ Brotherhood To learn more about Alpha Kappa Psi, visit our website: https://orgsync. com/97735/chapter Association of Student Planners The Association of Student Planners is the student-run educational, social and volunteer association for both graduate and undergraduate students in the Eastern Washington Urban and Regional Planning program. This April, 11 students attended the National Planning Conference in San Francisco. This trip was made possible by the generosity of the planning community and the efforts of ASP officers and members, who organized a wildly successful silent auction at the annual Urban and Regional Planning Department’s Chili

Cook-Off and petitioned ASEWU for supplemental funding. The group raised over $4,000 for airfare and lodging costs for the conference. ASP also received a scholarship from the APA Inland Empire Section that contributed to travel costs. At the conference, student planners had the opportunity to interact with professionals from all over the country as well as to experience the urban environment of San Francisco. Students enjoyed networking, expanding planning knowledge, and representing Eastern Washington University at the largest planning conference in the country. To learn more about the Association of Student Planners, visit our website: https://orgsync.com/99614/chapter Beta Alpha Psi Professional Fraternity EWU’s Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) chapter has been very active this year. Networking events such as “Meet the Professionals” connect BAP members with local employers interested in hiring EWU accounting, finance and information systems students and graduates as interns and employees. Many of these professionals are proud EWU alumni. Service events such as the Arc of Spokane Clothing Drive provide opportunities for BAP members to serve the community. EWU’s BAP chapter recently cohosted BAP’s Regional Meeting with Boise State University on April 5-6. In addition, BAP hosted their primary spring networking event, the Spring Banquet, on May 9th. EWU business students, accounting faculty, Accounting Advisory Board members, and other accounting professionals and their guests attended. THE IDEATHON

Data Analytics and The Future of Work On Friday, Oct. 19, 70 employers, students, faculty and staff participated in The Ideathon, an event sponsored by EWU in partnership with Microsoft and Greater Spokane Incorporated. The Ideathon was an opportunity for students to interact in a problem-solving capacity with members of the business community, centered around evolving the way we work together for the benefit of students, employers and the community. Eastern Washington employers are facing a skills gap related to data analyst and data science roles. Participants in The Ideathon explored ways in which government, employers and education might work together to boost the pipeline of people with data analytics skills who are ready to work in eastern Washington. Participants gathered on the EWU Spokane campus planning studio for a one-day, interactive co-creation session to ideate around ways to address this problem space and create a stronger data analyst talent pipeline in Eastern Washington. In addition to professional networking and learning new problemsolving skills, participants had the opportunity to put their ideas into action in follow-up partnerships among students, educators, and employers. Ideathon activities included: • An update on the future of work from Karen Kocher, general manager of 21st Century Jobs, Skills & Employability at Microsoft • Design thinking/co-creation sessions, with prizes for the most popular ideas • Plenty of opportunity for networking and open discussion The event was a great success and

CBPA

we are exploring ways to develop and implement ideas generated by the participants. The winning idea, “Gigternships,” is already being developed in two different ways. Microsoft is working with the Upwork platform to develop “Gigwork,” a program for students near graduation to develop skills needed in an online project-oriented work environment. Some of CBPA’s data analytics and business analytics students are currently alpha piloting this program. Additionally, the EWU Career Center is working with CBPA Data Analytics to develop shortterm, online-managed, project-oriented student internships initially focusing on data analytics. To learn more about The Ideathon and about our analytics program, please visit our website: https://www2.ewu.edu/cbpa/ programs/analytics

GIVING JOY

CBPA RETIREMENTS

As part of the National Day of Giving in November, EWU celebrated Giving Joy Day 2018. This is a fabulous way of acknowledging what people are doing in support of their communities, and encouraging individuals and organizations to help others in meaningful ways. One of the areas that is highlighted by Eastern is giving to scholarships. Tuition, books and fees for a single academic year is now over $7,300 per student. This does not include room and board or other living expenses, which takes the total to over $21,000 annually. Gifts to scholarships make it possible for students to focus on their studies, rather than on how they’ll pay for their education. EWU Alumna, Shirley Cheramy, has established a new endowed scholarship for students within the College of Business and Public Administration. Cheramy was the first woman in the U.S. to be promoted to the position of office managing partner in any of the ‘Big 8’ accounting firms. It was the professors at Eastern, including Robert Bender and Arnold Carlson, who inspired her to enter the accounting profession. This decision afforded her significant opportunities and a successful career. Shirley shared that her gift is given in recognition of the academic foundation and support that she received at Eastern, and is intended to provide financial benefit, recognition and encouragement for women who are also pursuing careers in public accounting. Her generous gift will provide a $4,000 award each year to a woman entering the field of public accounting. The first scholarship benefited a student during this academic year. We thank Shirley, and the other generous alumni and friends of the College of Business and Public Administration at EWU who support our students with their financial gifts. For more information on providing scholarship support, or contributing in other areas, please contact Ken Tucker, Director of Philanthropy, at 509.359.7030 or by email at ktucker10@ewu.edu. Thank you.
