CBPANEWS Volume 2
DEAN’S CORNER It is with great pleasure that I welcome the 20172018 academic year as dean of the College of Business and Public Administration. Since joining Eastern in July 2017, I have learned a great deal about EWU and the CBPA, and received tremendous kindness and support from faculty and staff, for which I am deeply grateful. As the start of the academic year approaches, I am looking forward to welcoming students and faculty back to campus, and to working together on a number of exciting initiatives for the CBPA. In this issue of the College of Business and Public Administration newsletter, we look back at the many recent accomplishments of CBPA faculty, staff, students and alumni. We will also welcome our new faculty, and preview the new and exciting programs which are offered for the first time in 2017-2018, including the new undergraduate degrees in business analytics and data analytics, a new partnership with Microsoft, and the launch of our new graduate program, the master of professional accounting (MPAcc). I hope that you enjoy this issue of the CBPA newsletter, and share your thoughts and suggestions for continuous improvement of our college. I look forward to working with our CBPA faculty, staff, students, alumni, and strive to fulfill our mission, “to develop students who think critically, act ethically and contribute to evolving public and private sector environments."

UNIQUE COLLABORATION WITH MICROSOFT:
EWU and Microsoft made the joint announcement Aug. 24 at EWU Spokane. (L to R): Kristin Rhodes (Microsoft), President Mary Cullinan, Matt Minton ’93 (Microsoft), Keith Boyd (Microsoft) and Provost Scott Gordon.
We are excited to work with Microsoft to offer students a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Analytics, one of the fastest-growing and highest-demand professions in the world. Under this collaboration, courses from the Microsoft Professional Program (MPP) in data science will be integrated into the final year of curriculum for students studying analytics in EWU’s College of Business and Public Administration. EWU is currently the only university in the world to have the MPP data science credential combined with a degree.
“Eastern is delighted to work with Microsoft on this program,” said EWU President Mary Cullinan. “By collaborating with the private sector, Eastern can address significant needs in professional and technical areas. The Microsoft initiative is a wonderful model of how we can work together.” Senior class cohorts will take challenging hybrid courses taught by EWU faculty utilizing Microsoft courses. Students will earn a BS in data analytics as well as a professional distinction certificate in data science from Microsoft. “We’re proud to see EWU engage with our MPP for data scientists,” states Anthony Salcito, vice president for education, Microsoft. “The Open edX on Azure scalable platform, the rigorous curriculum, and the industry credential from Microsoft, combined with an academic degree from Eastern, will give graduates a distinct advantage in securing the jobs of the future that are most in-demand.” “This will move Eastern into the forefront of analytics education,” said EWU Provost Scott Gordon. “Students taking this curriculum will have the job-ready skills to be a part of the digital transformation impacting business and industry sectors worldwide.” Worldwide, rates of completion for online courses are less than 10 percent. At EWU, learning outcomes will be higher as a result of students receiving the support of their instructors and classmates to successfully finish the program as part of their degree. EWU will roll out the program this fall with a few students who are eligible. The first full enrollment cycle will begin fall 2018 so that Eastern has time to market and recruit for the program. THE BUSINESS OF ANALYTICS Large-scale data collection is everywhere. The pace of data collection is getting faster every day. Data on just about every aspect of our world is tracked and stored in a database somewhere. Analytics takes this data and transforms it into a narrative of meaning and provides insights into meaningful patterns within recorded data. Analytics uses data to attempt to answer questions such as why or how it happened. What can you do with a degree in Analytics? There is great demand for those with analytics skills. The McKinsey Global Institute (a private-sector think tank) notes that, based on surveys, 48 percent of executives say it’s harder to find and retain data and analytics talent. McKinsey also projects there will be a shortage of 1.5 million managers and analysts who will know how to utilize big data to make effective decisions in the U.S. by 2018. A recent search matching just the word “analytics” on LinkedIn.com found more than 84,000 open positions in the U.S. More than 20,000 were in the three west coast states and 3,600 were in Washington state. Another search found almost 2,000 junior or entry-level positions in the greater New York City area alone, posted in a 30-day period! According to Glassdoor.com, data scientist is rated the best job in America for 2017, with a median base salary of $110,000. Analytics ties in with many career labels, which show quite a range of entry-level and early-career average salaries on Payscale.com:
