Archaeological Field School - Department of Geography, Anthropology, and Urban Planning Throughout the spring quarter, students from the Department of Geography, Anthropology, and Urban Planning have investigated the cultural landscape of the Mukogawa US Campus in Spokane Washington, an extension campus of the Mukogawa Women’s University of Nishinomiya, Japan. The administrators of Mukogawa contacted Eastern Washington University to develop an archaeological field school where students from both institutions could work together to better understand the cultural heritage of the property. The campus is located in the traditional territorial lands of the Spokane people and today uses the remaining buildings from the former military regimental headquarters Fort George Wright for teaching, housing, and administrative purposes. The US military constructed the fort in the late 19th century, and today it provides a unique opportunity for EWU students to learn archaeological field methods and participate in active, student-led research. Students are learning all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, and are concentrating this field season’s efforts on excavating portions of two historic foundations located in the center of the property. Dr. Brian Buchanan, the principal investigator on the project, is leading fifteen students in the inaugural field season at the site.
