Eastern’s Sustainability Center will be a focal point of teaching, learning and community engagement as the alternative and renewable energy fields continue to grow in this country and around the world.


THE CENTER WILL FOCUS ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH. T WO CLASSROOMS, AN ENGINEERING LIVING LAB AND REAL–TIME DATA COLLEC TION WILL CREATE A DESTINATION FOR K-12 STUDENTS, REAL WORLD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR E WU STUDENTS, AS WELL AS A TESTING SITE FOR AREA BUSINESSES.

The center’s living lab will allow active modification of building insulation and glazing and will feature different building styles to use as training models. In the research lab, students, faculty and visiting corporate entities can test designs and equipment.


EWU’s engineers and educators will get hands-on practice with emerging technologies, innovative curricula and teaching strategies.

The center’s plots will feature innovative agro-ecology and permaculture gardening models. Here students, faculty, and visitors can participate in ongoing sustainability research.


THE GARDENS WILL SERVE AS A 24/7-ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUC ATION FACILIT Y. THE Y WILL CREATE A LIVING LABORATORY FOR COURSES AS DIVERSE AS FIELD BOTANY, ETHNOBOTANY, GARDENING WITH NATIVE SPECIES, COMPOSTING AND BEST PRACTICES FOR ARID ECOSYSTEMS.
