Editor's Letter I received wonderful news at the beginning of the Year that I no longer had to receive chemotherapy! Shock was my first thought, then disbelief, then worry, then shock, disbelief and worry all over again. After the emotional day I had I realized that life is always chaning our “Normal”. I was used to 2 1/2 years of Dr’s appts, chemo, blood work etc and knew how to plan my days and weeks around this NEW Normal and here I am again starting over. I think change is good and we being stagnent and doing the same thing over and over again slowly takes away a piece of us. I encourage each and every one of you to make changes without life doing it for you. You can change simple things like your lipstick brand, your shampoo or your job. Whatever you decide to change remember that you have the power and that life inevitably does deal us all those moments where we are forced into change but you can also make New Normals on your own terms. Embrace Life and Change it up!
Believe in yourself always, Kymberly Soule’ “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The Endangered Penguins Recent movies such as Happy Feet and Madagascar show us the entertaining and appealing side of penguins, but neither really stresses how dire the situation with endangered penguins really is. Although many people believe that all penguins are found in Antarctica, that is simply not true. In fact, only a few species of penguin live as far south as Antarctica. Most species live within the temperate zone, and one species even lives near the equator! So, what’s causing the penguins to go away? Believe it or not, the biggest problem leading to endangered penguins is oil. When oil tankers or large ship spill oil, there is simply no way to clean up the water well enough or fast enough so that the penguins remain unaffected. Penguins cannot fly, and therefore must dive into the water to obtain their food. When the surface of the water is coated in oil, the penguins must dive through the oil to get to the clear water below. Not only does this entry into the water cause oil to cling to the feathers of the penguins, but they often become re-saturated upon leaving the water. As you can imagine, even attempting to clean themselves or one another is dangerous because they run the risk of ingesting the oil. Oil spills not only have an adverse effect on the amount of living penguins, but also those that are unborn. If the penguins’ nests come into contact with the oil, there is a good chance that traces of the oil will end up inside the egg. This either kills the developing penguin altogether or causes it to be born with abnormalities. By understanding how penguins are being affected, we can all take action to prevent them from being extinct. There are plenty of organizations that you can become a part of online if you wish to help with such efforts. Some of them you can help with by volunteering with them at a location in your area. Others you can work with by donating money, spreading information, or helping them with a particular cause they promote. It is important that we all take action now to prevent them from becoming a part of the past. Many species have drastically low numbers even with conservation efforts in place. Therefore it is obvious much more needs to be done if there is hope for their survival. It is the responsibility of each of us to do all we can to get these penguins removed from the endangered and the vulnerable lists. With constant efforts we can do it! Brows
1. Using a brow pencil that matches the shade of hair, outline your lower brow line. 2. Outline your upper brow line in the same manner. 3. Fill in your brows with the pencil, using upward strokes. 4. Comb your brows up and along the arch to keep the hairs in place. 5. Using a small, angled brush and brow powder in your shade, start at the inner corner of your brows and shade in, being careful not to brush too heavily. 6. Shade in the majority of your brows with the angled brush and powder-this helps set the pencil. 7. Carefully use small brush strokes to fill in your arch and taper off the outer points of your brows. 8. Using a small, fluffy brush, blend through your brows thoroughly. 9. If you wish, take a flat brush, and line underneath your brows with a bit of concealer to give them a precise, defined look. 10. Define the arch and points of your brows with the concealer, as well. Now, you have perfect eyebrows!

Bald is Beautiful by: Anna-Lisa Parrish
I will never forget the look of unconditional love on my baby girl's face as I walked out of the salon bald and in tears. It was a look that changed me forever. I was diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis, a rare auto-immune disease that causes hair loss (in my case, total body hair loss) when my daughter was about 7 months old. I had been losing clumps of hair for a couple months but I just thought it was normal, postpartum hair loss. I knew I had a problem when I realized all my arm hair was gone. During the time of my diagnosis, I was at the lowest point of my life emotionally and physically. I felt VERY uncomfortable with my body and I was very self conscience about how I looked. We had just moved to a new city for my husband's job and I was having a hard time adjusting and having two kids. I was not in a good place and now I had a life changing diagnosis. While my hair was falling out, I kept cutting it shorter and shorter just so it would look good and I wouldn't have to deal with long strands of hair everywhere. One day I decided to go in and get a cute "boy cut" because my hair was too thin to look good short. To my horror, the hairdresser took a number 8 razor to my hair and shaved it all off! I was no where near being ready to accept my new reality with no hair but now I didn't have a choice. As I was walking out of the salon, I stopped to pick up my daughter (thank God my husband and kids were there with me) and when I picked her up, she looked in my eyes and smiled at me. It was in that moment that I realized that no matter what I looked like, I was always going to be her mommy. In a split second, my 7 month old changed my outlook. I am more than my hair. I am more than my outward appearance. I am a daughter of God. I am a wife and a mom. I am a daughter and friend. I am a business owner. I am me. I am more than my hair. It's been a little over two years since my diagnosis and I have lost over 95% of my hair but I am happier than I have ever been. I own my own business, I am in the best physical shape I've been in for a long time, and most importantly, I am confident in myself. I decided shortly after my diagnosis that I wouldn't wear a wig or cover up my bald head because I wanted to be true to myself and show my kids what it's like to totally accept yourself, flaws and all. I see in the blessings around me everyday how Alopecia has made me a stronger and better woman and I can honestly say I am thankful for my Alopecia.
What is Alopecia Areata? Alopecia areata is an acquired skin disease that can affect all hair-bearing skin and is characterized by localized areas of non-scarring hair loss. Alopecia areata, as a rule, is rarely associated with any other external or internal medical problems. Most often these bald areas regrow their hair spontaneously.
What causes alopecia areata?
Current evidence suggests that alopecia areata is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. This particular abnormality leads to autoimmunity, a misguided immune system that tends to attack its own body. As a result, the immune system attacks particular tissues of the body. In alopecia areata, for unknown reasons, the body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation. Biopsies of affected skin show immune lymphocytes penetrating into the hair bulb of the hair follicles. Alopecia areata is occasionally associated with other autoimmune conditions such as allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. The diagnosis or treatment of these diseases is unlikely to affect the course of alopecia areata. Sometimes, alopecia areata occurs within family members, suggesting a role of genes
Alopecia areata facts
Alopecia areata is a hair-loss condition which usually affects the scalp. Alopecia areata typically causes one or more patches of hair loss. Alopecia areata affects both genders. An autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, is believed to cause alopecia areata. For most patients, the condition resolves without treatment within a year, but hair loss is sometimes permanent. A number of treatments are known to aid in hair regrowth. Multiple treatments may be necessary, and none consistently works for all patients. Many treatments are promoted which have not proven to be of benefit. Spina Bifida Occulta
Brett and I have known each other since childhood. We have been married for almost five years. We have two adorable three year old identical twin girls, Emmalynn and Katelynn. I had a really intense pregnancy and due to severe preeclampsia delivered the girls very early, thirty weeks and four days. Both girls spent two months in the NICU. They had their shares of ups and downs which consisted of pic lines, blood transfusion, along with many other procedures. It was a whole week before they could be held and a month before we could feed them. Once that journey was behind our family, we had to meet with doctors continuously regarding the girls’ prematurity, and particularly had to follow up with doctors regarding a lesion on Katelynn’s back. We found out it was lypoma menigacle. It was also known as spina bifida occulta or tethered cord syndrome. Katelynn had to undergo a tumor removal and tether cord release. She had several complications and had to have a second surgery. She later had a third surgery to help her mobility. She is partially paralyzed. This has caused many medical problems for Katelynn along the way. Katelynn actively participates in a therapy program at buckaroo barn along with other therapies. Looking at Katelynn you would not know she goes through these daily struggles, she is a fighter, a true miracle, and nothing short than a gift from God. I believe God has blessed me with twins because Emmalynn helps Katelynn in so many ways. Emmalynn has had to allow Katelynn to get attention that she does not, even though it is from doctors and therapist, attention to a three year old, is attention regardless.
“I hope all parents that have children with a disability can see that they are not disabled but a gift of God!” Emmalynn has done this with such grace, and selflessness. They continue to push each other, and give meaning to sisterhood daily. I get my strength through them. As a Mom, you want to make everything better for your child. You want to fix their troubles, mend their pain. However, this will be a journey that Katelynn and our family will have to face head on. We are teaching her to own her disability and be proud of it! Brett and I have many fears as our lives move forward. I have fear of the girls’ social lives but most of all the uncertainty of Katelynn’s complex condition. She has been a rare case in some instances. However, I sometimes will be at clinic with her and look around, and realize I am at home, and I am beyond blessed because Katelynn can speak to us and communicate. Not all parents have that joy. I am learning daily that it is not that we don’t have normal lives anymore; we just have a new normal! We are blessed to have a support system with our parents, physical therapists, all of Katelynn’s doctors, our church, and each other. Most of all, God! He continues to shine through our adversities. Brett and I have found new meaning to hope. We cherish every day and enjoy those little moments as a family that is easily taken for granted. I hope all parents that have children with a disability can see that they are not disabled but a gift of God!
