Editor's Letter I really have enjoyed working with everyone with this Vintage Affair Wedding Issue. As my husband & I celebrate our Wedding Anniversary, I realized that all people, both men and women, want to be beautiful, especially on their Wedding Day. When reflecting in the mirror, we all tend to be so critical of ourselves, including myself. God put us here to shine and work for him, and it is easy to get so caught up in the ways of the world and wanting to look like Supermodels or Hercules. Working with wedding shows, models, brides and all walks of life, I see it everyone! I encourage you all to stand in front of the mirror and sure, go ahead and say out loud “What!”, “How did I gain weight?”, “I hate my nose.” or whatever it is you don’t like about yourself. When you are done with that, take another look and notice your hands, your eyes, your mouth, your legs and body overall. Look at the amazing things that God has given each and every one of us, and try and embrace your body and know that you are beautiful.

Reflect and Believe in Yourself God Bless You Kymberly Soule’

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Monarch Butterfly

Endangered

The Monarch Butterfly population, as well as numerous other animal species, is suffering the effects of man-made events as well as the consequences of the “global warming” phenomenon. Scientists assert that the global climate change may cause the Monarch’s overwintering sites in Mexico to become wetter, and the spring and summer breeding areas of the United States west coast and mid-western agricultural belt to become warmer. As temperatures become too warm for this species, their summer migrations may take them even further northward. Will the Monarch Butterflies migrate a further distance south to the current locations? Since researchers started keeping records in the early 1900’s the winter sites have not changed. Temperature increases cause possibly cause changes in their migratory patterns. The Monarch’s winter home in the mountains of central Mexico is greatly threatened today by tremendous logging operations of the Fir tree forests. This deforestation and increased agricultural development in Mexico is causing great concern, and adding to the outcry that the Monarch Butterfly is becoming an endangered species. Along the populous areas of southern California many species of the Monarch Butterfly’s roosting trees are disappearing, although the Eucalyptus tree is increasing in numbers for the butterflies. Local concerned groups are encouraging the conservation of trees for roosting, and the re-planting of milkweed plants for the females to lay eggs on in late winter and early spring. When semi-dormant in the winter the Monarchs need dense tree cover. And in the spring and summer breeding season they need abundant availability of milkweed plants.

Artist Design - Tami's Mask and Mirror Studio Photographer - Elle Photograhy http://monarch-butterfly.info/Endangered.html

Although in North America the Monarch Butterflies are not considered an “endangered” or “threatened” species, they are highly protected under law, especially around their wintering roosting sites.

Vegetarian Pinto Bean Sloppy Joes

Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 medium carrots, sliced 1 large white onion, sliced 4 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons chili powder 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 cup dry pinto beans, soaked (see Tip) 1 large red bell pepper, diced 1 8-ounce can no-salt-added tomato sauce 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce or tamari 2 tablespoons tomato paste 4 cups very thinly sliced green cabbage 1 medium zucchini, chopped 1 cup corn, fresh or frozen (thawed) 3 tablespoons honey mustard 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon salt 10 whole-wheat hamburger buns

NUTRITION Per serving: 283 calories 6 g fat (1 g sat, 3 g mono) 0 mg cholesterol 51 g carbohydrates 6 g added sugars 13 g total sugars 11 g protein 11 g fiber 692 mg sodium 773 mg potassium

PREPARATION Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add carrots and onion; cook, stirring occasionally, until starting to brown, about 8 minutes. Stir in garlic and chili powder; cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 15 seconds. Remove from heat; stir in vinegar and scrape up any browned bits. Coat a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Drain and rinse the soaked beans; transfer to the slow cooker. Stir in bell pepper, tomato sauce, water, soy sauce (or tamari) and tomato paste to combine. Spread the carrot-onion mixture over the bean mixture, but don’t stir the two together. (The layer on top helps keep the beans submerged during cooking so they don’t dry out.) Cover and cook on High for 5 hours or Low for 9 hours. Stir in cabbage, zucchini, corn, honey mustard, brown sugar and salt; cook on High for 30 minutes. Serve the mixture on buns.

Happily Ever After…..

Beyond Your Average F By Audra Warren

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved movies. In fact the very first animated film I can recall seeing in theaters is The Little Mermaid. You’ve all seen it I’m sure... Ariel meets her Prince Charming, agrees to give up her voice and her life under the sea with her family, all for what is believed to be everlasting love. She does all of this without a second thought and lives blissfully in love forever, sans complications. At least that’s what the average fairy tale leads us to believe. In most fairy tales you only see the beginning … in general… the happy. What about the middle?? Isn’t this the most important part?? After all, it is the struggle that usually gets us to our happily ever after…right?? The idea of the typical happily ever after often portrayed in movies can leave some people feeling confused when their story falls short. This is true for one girl, anyway. Once upon a time in Alabama, there lived a very carefree 25 year old girl just enjoying life. Let’s call her Shay. Like many young ladies her age, Shay had plans, dreams, goals, and she was busy working towards them. Things seemed to be right on track since she was in her last semester of college. Shay was on her way, until one day when she was struck with some very devastating news. What had initially appeared to be a fibroid cyst in her left breast turned out to be, you got it, The BIG “C.” In less than five minutes; Shay was told that she had cancer, would need surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and was given details about harvesting eggs. Shay was in utter shock and disbelief. She felt as if she had completely left her body and was watching this patient/doctor conversation from the outside. Believe it or not, Shay was so numb that she never even cried. She seriously waited for the phone call that would say there was a mix-up with her test results. Sure there was a lot of cancer in her family, but she was only 25. How could this be? The following week Shay had a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. A little less than a year later, she was put into remission. Happy to be alive and considered healthy in the eyes of oncology, Shay proceeded with her life as planned and went back to school. She wanted to put cancer behind her and forget it had ever happened. Not long after all of this, Shay met and became engaged to a nice guy. As they planned their wedding, she finished her degree in Education. During this planning period in her life, she developed an unusual discomfort in her sternum. What started as a minor pain without any necessary medication quickly developed into more.

Months of complaining to her doctors went on only for her to be told she had normal arthritis as a result of treatment. Despite being blown off by doctors for her concerns, Shay continued to be persistent. She needed more answers. If this was indeed arthritis, surely an orthopedic could help her. Lucky for Shay, she had friends in orthopedics. It only took one quick phone call to a doctor friend to get an appointment that led to the start of some answers. The very next day she had 3D x-rays, a bone scan, and a PET scan. Days later it was confirmed that the cancer had metastasized to her bones.

Fairy Tale

s

“I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles. - Audrey Hepburn

“You are a result of everything your soul has learned from lifetime to lifetime to lifetime.” Shirley MaClaine

Needless to say, doctors did not give Shay a lot of hope. In fact, one doctor told her that statistically speaking, she probably had 3 to 4 years to live, at best. Wedding plans were already made. Shay and her beau were married on a Friday night ,and she started chemotherapy for a second time on the following Tuesday morning. She thought she knew sick before this, but as it turns out she had no clue. Shay could barely walk from the pain in her bones. While most new brides were preparing gourmet dinners for their husbands after work, Shay was lucky to get out of bed on any given day, much less cook a meal or shower. These newlyweds were living far from honeymoon bliss. This daily routine of just barely getting by went on for nearly two years. It’s during this crucial time of a marriage that most couples are building a bond that sets the foundation for lasting love. By the time Shay had the ability to even think about being married, her marriage had already dissolved. Just three short years after saying their “I dos” they said goodbye through a not-so happy divorce decree. Sounds like a sad sob story… huh? Not so…Here is the silver lining and the modern day twist to this happily ever after…

The girl in the story is me, Audra Warren, and at almost 34 and nearly nine years after my original diagnosis I am alive, happy, and healthy. What I realized is that for much of my life, I had made some important decisions based on what others thought was best for me and not what my own heart truly wanted. I realized that I married someone who was meant to be in my life for just a season. I have no regrets, but many valuable life lessons. I learned that I know myself better than anyone else. I learned to listen to my inner voice. I learned that happily ever after is more than a wedding or even a marriage. I learned that happily ever after is about knowing who you are, loving who you are, and being proud to live life in the truest version of yourself. It’s enjoying life no matter what stage you happen to be in Too often we wish for material things and people to complete our happiness. The world has a tendency to teach us that happily ever after only comes when finding the love of your life, your better half, the one. This notion leads single people to believe that they are lacking something if they have yet to reach marital status. The truth is, married or not, you’ve already found that person. You are the love of your life, your better half, the one. The quicker you realize this reality, the sooner you’ll see that your “happily ever after” already exists. Finding the right person to enjoy your happy with is just a bonus. Know yourself, appreciate the struggles in your journey, learn something new from each unique experience, and always, always love yourself first. Here’s to you and your very own happily every after... .

“Know yourself. You could be handed the greatest script ever to see your hands, but if you don’t know what love, life, and you are all about it’s never going to be on the screen.” Ernest Borgnine

Camp Bluebird offers a unique experience for adult cancer patients. Sponsored by Providence Hospital and the Telephone Pioneers, Camp Bluebird offers recreation, relaxation, crafts and activities, non-denominational worship services and the opportunity to openly discuss the experiences and emotions associated with cancer with other survivors. On the last day, as a sign of hope, each camper builds a bird house. Family members and close friends are invited to attend the concluding luncheon. The purpose of the camp is to provide: A time for listening and learning A time for sharing and caring Analysis of life-style and adjustments in living with cancer Family support—how to give it and accept it Assessment of non-medical needs and ways to meet those needs Educational assistance for medically related concerns Nutrition information Participants describe Camp Bluebird as a "'a wonderful experience, with upbeat people sharing their experiences with cancer and survival." Camp Bluebird is uplift ing—not sad as one might think. Campers share lots of laughter, and a few tears, but the emphasis is on maintaining hope and a positive attitude.

Vintage

Affair

A truly vintage Victorian-inspired custom gown (circa 1973) is a prefect specimen for the currently popular Bohemian Chic movement. The gown would also make an excellent candidate for a modern update by removing the sleeves and neckline. The French lace trimmed cathedral veil is seated on a Juliet cap. Again, a 1970s retro look that has circled back around.

Tips for Buying a Vintage Wedding Dress 1. Be patient

Southern Elegance radiates from pink cascading ruf fles with a beaded Alencon lace bodice gown from 1990. The dated sleeves were removed and replaced with romantic sheer lace straps. Accents such as the variegated pink jeweled choker and feathery hair clip are beautiful touches.

Finding your perfect vintage dress takes a lot of patience in browsing through the racks and displays. Keep in mind that this is not your usual department store where everything you see is new. In vintage stores, it is like looking for a treasure in a sea, you will never know what you will find unless you really dive into the shelves, racks and even go through piles and piles of used clothes! The fastest way to look for the “goodies” into every vintage shop is to ask and befriend the salesperson and tell her what you are looking for in particular. Never insult their garments if you found something that is unreasonably priced just because it has already been used by someone else. If in case you found something that you like but find the dress as too pricey, establish a price that you can both agree on and do not forget to be nice and friendly when making a negotiation.

2. Sizes do not matter! If you are a size 6 and found something that is one two sizes bigger than your actual size, have an open mind and try it on. Most people are afraid of trying on a dress whenever they see that the label is one size bigger than their actual size thinking that they would not want to feel “bigger”. This is the number one reason why shop owners tend to take off the clothing tags just so people would actually try the garments on. People in the past were actually smaller and thinner than people of today and so a size 12 might actually mean that you are a size 16 in vintage stores. Another thing that you should know is that designers have different size charts and so if you are shopping online, it is best to ask the seller for the exact measurements before buying the dress.

3. If it is beyond repair, do not buy it! A missing button or a broken zipper can be replaced with a new one but a dress that has a musty smell in it is a deal breaker! Not to mention if the dress looks as if it is about to deteriorate.

4. Watch out for the quality of the dress No matter how popular the designer of the dress is, it will deteriorate over time. Examine the dress carefully and look for any signs of weakening. The good news about vintage dresses is that they are usually worn once thus, the quality of the dress is usually preserved.

A Maggie Soterro “Memories” Collection gown is a contemporary piece although it is reminiscent of vintage Hollywood Glamour. Liquid satin is classic 1940s due to its high gloss ability to provide contrast of light and shadow, so critical before the advent of color film. The antique gold, rouched bodice is covered with metallic flecked lace and compliments the vintage feel. An elaborate custom headpiece and matching accessory on the gown created with pearlescent florals highlights the drama of unexpected details. Big chunky jewelry says “Fabulous!”

From the royal wedding of Kate and William in 2011 emerged the representation of the “modern Princess”. In lieu of the show-stopping 27 foot train opulence of Diana’s wedding, Princess Catherine of Cambridge stepped out in understated elegance where fit is everything, not unlike Princess Grace of Monaco in the 1950s. The example shown here is a Private Collection piece of white matte satin, waist-cinching side pleats and a beautiful off-the-shoulder portrait neckline and ¾ length sleeves. The a-line skirt features a panel of the same crystalline lace as the encrusted bodice and a back button line that extends to the end of the train. A simple tear drop crystal scalloped edge veil flows from a Swarovski diadem with clean lines that allows the bride’s brilliance to shine through.

First Things First when Planning a Vintage Wedding Do you want a classic vintage theme or do you want a melange of retro classic and vintage? While vintage will have touches of the early 20th century, a retro-inspired wedding will have those of much later years. Once you decide the sub-theme, decide on the exact year of decade you want to focus on. It is important to decide the scope of the theme. Do you want everything in your wedding to coincide with the theme or do you want little whispers of the theme throughout? Next, from the year that you pick, decide on the colors that you will use. For a classic theme, fresh and/or muted colors such as apricot, cranberry, cream, blush, mint etc., will work. For a retro-inspired theme, think rich and luxurious tones like black, navy, silver, gold, ivory, crimson, etc. Do you want your guests to pay heed to the theme (dress up as per the theme) while attending, or will it be limited to only the wedding party? Conduct your own thorough research on the year/s you select to make the planning much easier.

Blushing bride, indeed, as this color is a reemerging trend. As with all fashion, it’s a hue that was once considered the height of couture, albeit maverick, in the 1940s. The gown shown here is a late model from the Soterro-Midgeley design house constructed of blush dupioni silk featuring a figure-flattering side-rouching and corset back. The throw-back pale pink veil with a pearl circlet headpiece is a reminder of the bridal styles of the “big hair” rock bands of the late 80s and early 90s. Guess what…they’re back!

We are back to the future in this sleek Art Deco style gown from Allure. The plunging neckline and backless elements are a stunning canvas for dramatic accents such as jeweled back draping, opera-length gloves and over-stated bracelets.

Popping the Question “Will you be my bridesmaid?” It’s the question every bride has to ask and usually more than once! Every girl has the perfect scenario in her head of how she wishes to be proposed to. But until the proposal comes and goes, not many women bother to think of how they are going to ask their best girlfriends to stand in their weddings. We are living in an age of creativity! A bride-to-be asking her friends to be bridesmaids is just as important as a man asking his girlfriend for her hand in marriage! Luckily, we also live in the age of Pinterest; so I turned to this creative website to see what some bride-to-be’s are doing to pop the question! Possibly one of the most popular questionpoppers are treasure boxes. You can fill them with just about anything, from jewelry to be worn for the wedding, your friend’s favorite things, or even trinkets to commemorate different events throughout your friendship. Usually, the question is asked upon the opening of the box, where it is written on the inside.

One of the more popular ideas is using this cute phrase! There are so many different ways to incorporate this into a creative idea; but you can always stick with an easier, formal route with a simple card and envelope.

I am a fan of personalizing things, myself. This popular idea of making picture frames is all over Pinterest. Adding a picture of you and your gal pal is a great idea as well. Desha’ Ringe

Cupcakes

& Pinups

Typically the centerpiece of the reception, the wedding cake plays a huge role in the ceremony. Most people believed the bigger, the more elaborate the cake, the better. But a new tradition is becoming an even bigger fad: cupcakes. Gourmet cupcakes are making their way into the world of weddings, and many couples are choosing them over the traditional towering cake. In having cupcakes, you tend to have more choices in flavors and looks; and you still have that “wow factor upon first glances.

They can be made to look like mini wedding cakes, if you are still wanting a more traditional look; and there are even stands that are made to hold the cupcakes in the fashion of a regular cake. But if you are looking to go completely out of the box, crazy concoctions of flavors are being created every day. One unique ingredient that has become popular in baking, and particularly in garnishing of cupcakes, is bacon. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Adding a piece of bacon to a buttercream-frosted cupcake is Heaven among men! Besides unique flavors and garnishing, the presentation of the cupcakes can get a little crazy as well. From the red-carpet-worthy layouts we’ve seen created in shows such as TLC’s “Cupcake Wars”, to the wild-colored batters and icings you may find in your local bakery, choosing the looks, tastes, and presentations of your cupcakes can be an event in itself.

Get creative with your wedding this season! Go completely against the traditions, and give your family and friends something to talk about for the rest of the year. Whether you want tasty lemon-filled or daring licorice-topped, get a little silly with your cupcakes. Break the tradition of a typical wedding cake! And besides, a cupcake is much easier to smash in your significant other’s face!
