Editor's Letter New Year.. New Beginnings! That is what we all tend to think. I hear people everywhere making resolutions that were to start the 1st of January. What I found, is that I do the same thing... but, it never works. What if we just woke up everyday and looked at the day like we do the start of the New Year? God cleanses us and gives us the ability to wake up fresh and renewed everyday. I am personally going to make daily resoltuions that are much more short term oriented. That is how I will most likely be able to successfuly to reach the goal. We live in a world of CRAZY. We are all so busy, running from the minute we wake up to the minute we lay our heads down. I am probably the worse of them all. I believe that this is the DAY for a change in my life. A change that will enable me to be more in tune with my God, my family and myself. I am also planning a new tradition in our family, one where Christmas and the celebration of Christ is not just once a year. We will be gathering our families together for a feast and celebration once a month. A time to get the families together more than once a year. Life is so precious. 5 years ago I was told I have 7-10 years to live when I was given the awful diagnosis of Cancer. I do not believe in that statistic any longer but I still live my days like they are numbered. Stop and feel the romance with your partner, feel the breath of your children as you snuggle on the couch with a good movie, gaze at the wonder of the night with stars that are so bright they light the sky. Stop and smell the flowers or coffee in the morning. Live like you were dying every day and praise GOD for every second you can make a difference in the lives of others. If you only save one soul that's all that matters.
God Bless You Kymberly Soule’
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Brain Cancer Awareness
Brain Tumors do not discriminate. Primary brain tumors - those that begin in the brain and tend to stay in the brain - occur in people of all ages, but they are statistically more frequent in children and older adults. Metastatic brain tumors - those that begin as a cancer elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain - are more common in adults than children. Brain tumors are the: *leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children (males and females) under age 20 (leukemia is the first). *second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in males ages 20-39 (leukemia is the first). *fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in females ages 20-39. Brain Tumor Statistics: Nearly 70,000 new cases of primary brain tumors will be diagnosed this year. More than 4,600 children between the ages of 0-19 will be diagnosed with a brain tumor this year. Brain and central nervous system tumors are the most common cancers among children ages 0-19. There are nearly 700,000 people in the U.S. living with a brain tumor. This year, nearly 14,000 people will lose their battle with a brain tumor. There are more than 120 types of brain tumors.

People are often uncomfortable talking about illness. Naturally, sickness repels the healthy. When I tell people I’m a pediatric brain tumor survivor, they get wide-eyed. I’m met with empathy and understanding from those with loved ones who have or had cancer. For the fortunate few who haven’t, I get “But you don’t look sick”. Well, I’m not anymore. Thankfully, since removal of my tumor in 2008, I’ve been in remission for seven years. My prognosis is good and I expect to live a long life. It was one doctor’s visit among many that saved my life. For two years I’d missed so much school going to the doctor for seemingly unrelated ailments: nausea and vomiting, occasional loss of vision, fainting and paralysis, slight limping, general clumsiness, just to name a few. I remember feeling an odd mixture of relief and anxiety when my first MRI revealed a mass the size of a large egg in the fluid space of my brain. This unnatural growth was why I hadn’t felt like myself in a long time, and we were starting to understand what we were dealing with. Recovery from that first operation was difficult. I awoke from the anesthesia with temporary memory loss, hallucinations, and weakness in my left side. After two weeks, I was cleared to go home, but my recovery was far from over. The scar tissue in my brain had healed abnormally, resulting in pressure-related seizures. I was diagnosed with acquired hydrocephalus: a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. In a second surgery I had a permanent shunt installed in my abdomen to help regulate the pressure and prevent those seizures. Although the most dramatic parts of my healing are over, the road to recovery is a never-ending one. The tumor inflicted some damage in areas of my brain that deal with logic, mathematics, and executive function. By no means does this circumstance prevent me from becoming an independent, but in some things I’ll have to work a little bit harder than most people. Graduating high school and getting into university are some of the proudest moments my family has of me.
A Brain Tumor didn’t define me... by.: Hannah Samarripa
Looking at me, I may not be the poster child for what someone thinks when they hear the words “cancer”, “brain damage”, or “disability”, but something I’ve learned meeting other young people who’ve faced illness is that sympathy is not a contest. With the constant research and progress in the diagnosis and treatment of illness, doctors are catching the signs of cancer much earlier than twenty years ago. This amazing development means there are cancer patients living longer lives than in the past when it’s often too late to treat. Living with cancer and surviving is becoming more common than dying of cancer, and hopefullysomeday the cure will make it an ailment of the past. I try to keep my tone humble when people ask me about my medical history. Being in the hospital for a combined amount of three weeks, I saw so many children worse off than myself.
These poor, pale children, balding from chemotherapy, are shuttled in and out of specialists’ offices all day, sometimes in wheelchairs, and yet still find a reason to smile at a stranger, or include the new kid fresh out of surgery during rehabilitation. Some of these children aren’t even old enough to read and have already been through so much. There are kids I’ve seen around the hospital that weren’t around the next week. When people hear my story, they tell me how brave I must be, but there were so many times I felt the exact opposite. Those kids are the brave ones. Those are my heroes.
