Teen Board Introduction:

“I hope my life will take me beyond the boundaries that limit me and that by the time I leave this world, I will have changed it.

Aubrey Teen Exalte’s newest Board member, Aubrey Moran, is quite possibly one of the most creative teens I’ve met in a long time. She truly reminds me of myself when I was 15- full of passion for school, writing, and leaving her mark in this world. Her love of music is inevitable to realize, as her talent is absolutely amazing. She sings (you can be amazed, yourself, by looking her up on YouTube) and she says that she is eager to learn to play the piano now, as she is receiving one this summer. Not only is she musically-inclined, she is also a fantastic writer and confesses a pencil is always in-hand; and she wouldn’t mind going to school for journalism. Whether it’s poetry or novels-in-the-works, she loves to pour her heart out onto paper. Aubrey reveals she is a perfectionist and strives to always set goals for herself. Her current goal of attending MSMS (Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science) will surely prove to be of no problem with her great school grades, though she admits she is working hard to keep them excellent. A self-proclaimed “problem solver,” Aubrey says her friends know she is the person to turn to in a bind! She spends her free time with her “small, diverse” group of friends; and when she isn’t busy with them, she says she is always “trying new things... I can be a tad bit cautious, though!” So don’t think she will try just anything! I am thrilled to have found this beautiful gem and am so proud to have her on my team! She is a hard worker, a fast worker, and a phenomenal person, in and out. Her dreams to “travel the world, eat strange foods, experience foreign cultures, and view all sorts of beautiful, breath-taking sceneries” are all at her fingertips. I am sure her name will be well-known everywhere soon enough. -Desha’ Ringe

Life-Saving Beauty Tips We at Teen Exalte’ have been inspired by a BuzzFeed article that has recently gone viral, “41 Life-Saving Beauty Hacks Every Girl Should Have in Her Arsenal.” This fun, picture-narrating article teaches you easy techniques to help simplify your makeup routines. So our Glam Squad picked their favorites to share with YOU!

Avoid Lipstick on your teeth! Stick your finger in your mouth, and pull it out! The excess lipstick that would eventually end up on your teeth will wipe off onto your finger.

Apply dry shampoo the night before!

DIY French Manicure! The secret? Rubberbands! Using a rubberband around your nail will help you achieve the perfect French manicure. Pulling it tightly will help keep it from slipping.

Applying your dry shampoo before you go to bed will help work it in better and will leave you with amazing volume the next morning!

Avoid Frizz! Dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt, rather than a towel. The towel can tangle and cause frizz in your hair. Wrap your head in a t-shirt to avoid out-of-control curls!

Lipbalm = a Clean Manicure!

Apply a thin layer of lip balm around your nails before painting them to insure a messfree mani!

Achieve the Perfect Lip!

Line your upper lip beginning with the Cupid’s Bow in an X shape, making sure it is even. Clean up with a bit of concealer on a brush, and accentuate your pout with a dusting of highlighter over your Cupid’s Bow.

Caught on Camera

I was shopping with my mom at the mall one day. When we were between entrance doors at a department store, she stopped, dramatically pulled out a wedgie, and said, “I figured I’d fix that where no one could see me!” But to our surprise and quite frankly horror, her crazy-looking self, mid-wedgie, was paused on the security camera TV at the front of the store! -Liz, 15

Stories of hilarity YOU sent us!

Crashing in Class One day in history class, I was bored and tired. I fell asleep, and my BFF tapped me on the shoulder to wake me up. Apparently I was snoring really loud and drooling all over my desk. My entire class still makes fun of me for it. I’ll never live it down! -Emma, 16

Gum Goofball My crush came up to my locker after school one day and surprised me. I forgot I had gum in my mouth; and all of a sudden, I started choking! I didn’t know what to do, so I just started jumping up and down and coughing. The gum came flying out of my mouth, right onto my crush’s shirt. It was so embarrassing! -Karlie, 14

We have all found ourselves in the same position: in a new environment, alone, and looking for a place to turn. That’s just how Alex Corporán, 19, felt when he started his freshman year of high school. “I didn’t know anyone at my school; and I still had my braces, glasses, and acne. My confidence was pretty shattered.” Craving to get into something productive, Alex found a volunteering organization, Chain Reaction (mychainreaction.org), and started spending his spare time volunteering with the elderly, children, homeless, and even took two different mission trips to Haiti and Jamaica. “Volunteering gave me the confidence,” he boasts proudly. This amazing young man, who graduated high school with well over 500 service hours, claims that his mission work changed him as person and helped mold him into the man he is today. “Seeing a person truly mean the words ‘Thank You’ is what kept me going every day,” he says. Though he lived in not-so-perfect conditions, like sleeping on a blow-up raft under a mosquito net while in Haiti, Alex’s memories of his trips are fond. “One of the experiences I will never forget...is when I was in Jamaica... In the back corner [of the infirmiry] was a woman. We sat down and introduced ourselves. She told us of how she ended up going blind at 40, and she [was] 70...She explained with such a heavy Jamaican accent (but in the softest voice) that seeing the world needs to be a top priority before the sense of sight is taken away by a disease like what was done to her.” That really hit home for Alex. He says it’s a life lesson he will never forget. Now that he has graduated from high school and attends college, Alex is ready to take on his future and embrace whatever comes. He is now a professional model, walking runways and gracing editorial and commercial prints. A down-to-earth person, he is truly a role model for all young adults to remember to always strive to be a better person. Coming from being a self-proclaimed “outcast” to a beautiful inside-and-out model, Alex is an inspiration to us all and is definitely someone to be on the lookout for. His name will be in lights one day, and he deserves it all. -Desha’ Ringe

“Having the ability to go to another culture and immerse myself was truly amazing.

Preventing Diabetes Did you know that, even as a teenager or young adult, you are at risk for Type 2 diabetes? Teens these days are less active and tend to eat less healthy, and these habits lead to being overweight. Thus, Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in the younger age groups. Here are some tips for you to try to beat the ‘betes!

1. Limit your junk food like soda, candy, chips, and doughnuts 2. Limit visits to fast food chains or cut them out completely 3. Walk or ride your bike to school, if it’s close 4. Limit your time in front of the TV and computer 5. Instead of frying foods, try cooking them in different ways such as broiling, roasting, grilling, and steaming 6. Help with more chores around the house such as vacuuming and raking 7. Try to be physically active at least 60 minutes a day 8. Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day 9. Eat meals at the same time each day 10. Have healthy snacks on-hand to lower temptation of junky choices

Making changes in your diet and lifestlye may seem hard, but ask yourself these questions: Is it harder than pricking Is it harder than taking

your finger several times a day?

insulin shots with each meal?

Is it harder than multiple

hospital stays?

Is it harder than discovering more

health issues down the line?

We asked the burning questions you’re dying to know! Q. Should I get a job while I’m in high school? A. You should talk to your parents first. A job can be good in many ways

and can teach you things like how to prioritize your spending and keeping to your commitments.

Q. How do I get a job? A. Find places you are interested in, and ask for an application. Most places have online applications now, but it’s more professional to meet with a manager in person.

Q. They called me for an interview! What now? A. Every job is different and so is every interview. They want to see your personality and whether or not you will be a good fit for the company. Be polite and make sure you dress appropriately.

Q. What do I wear to an interview? A. Business/casual attire is usually most appropriate. Jeans, shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, t-shirts...these are always unacceptable. Make sure your hair is styled; girls, wear light makeup; guys, no need for unsightly stubble.

Q. Anything else I should know about my first job? A. Don’t ever take on too much. Make sure you leave time for your school work, and give plenty of notice if you have any functions to attend. Calling out of work last-minute is never ok unless it is an emergency. Look into job programs at your school; some schools, during your senior year, will allow you to leave mid-day for work and will count it as a credit.

Scholarship

Secrets

Though it can be a tad intimidating, applying for and earning scholarships is not difficult. There are many programs, fundraisers, and competitions that aid in getting young teens scholarships. Also, keeping up your grades and GPA helps. For example, if you have a GPA of 4.0 or higher, you’re guaranteed a scholarship. In addition, taking tests like the ACT will help you get into the college you want or even get a scholarship! It just depends on how you score. However, planning goes a long way, too. You are allowed to take tests like the ACT as many times as you want. This helps prepare you and also aids in gaining experience for other important tests you will have to take. You can take most tests like this more than once. Others, you have to study for and work diligently for a stupendous, well-deserved grade. Do you have a special talent, like singing or acting? Are you good at a certain sport? Sometimes, being gifted in specific criteria also helps in earning scholarships, but colleges will always look at grades. If your grades aren’t the least bit impressive, applying and earning scholarships will prove tedious. Also, sometimes the company that employs you will reward its young employees with scholarships, so that they may have a brighter future. One of the restaurants included is McDonald’s. Whatever your case is, don’t let applying for scholarships frighten you! It’s a tedious yet rewarding process, the reward being a life full of opportunities. -Aubrey Moran
