Excela Health Receives Continuing Support from McKenna Foundation Directed to Surgical Expansion at Latrobe Hospital Continuing its longstanding support for community healthcare, the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation has contributed $1.5 million toward the expansion of the Surgical Institute at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. The gift was channeled through the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation and represents the McKenna Foundation’s single largest grant to the health system thus far.

The creation of the Surgical Institute at Latrobe Hospital is part of Excela Health’s alignment and enhancement of surgical services, with a focus on increasing the variety and scope of surgeries, particularly as it relates to cancer care.

“We are grateful for the unflagging support of the McKenna Foundation as we seek to provide the best possible care to our community,” said John Sphon, Excela Health Chief Executive Officer. “This is a true community-healthcare partnership where vital resources become available and needs can be met.”

Excela Health Family Additions Maternity Center Enhances Safety for Newborns Through Sleep Sack Giveaway Excela Health has long utilized sleep sacks in its Family Additions Maternity Center at Westmoreland Hospital to swaddle newborns in the hours after delivery. Now all new parents will leave the hospital with a pair of sleep sacks to promote continuing safe sleep practices at home.

The gift is made possible by ongoing support from the Westmoreland/Frick Hospital Foundation. Beginning in 2022, the foundation will provide approximately $21,000 annually for the purchase of the monogrammed sleep sacks.

New State-Of-The-Art Surgical Device For Heart Patient Care Heart valve surgery can be especially difficult in patients with a large amount of calcification, where there is a heightened risk that the built-up plaque may break away and enter the blood stream and thus cause a stroke.

Thanks to a $231,000 gift from the Westmoreland/Frick Hospital Foundation, Excela Health cardiothoracic surgeons now have a device to help mitigate such risks, and benefit patients who might otherwise have been considered inoperable.

OB/GYN Online Education Class: Infant Safety Excela Health wants parents to be prepared and have peace of mind about caring for their infant whether a new or seasoned parent. Our online Infant Safety class will help parents learn about child safety practices, including car seat rules and regulations, infant CPR techniques and more.

This class is offered as an on-demand video. Nurses are available via telephone to answer any questions after watching the presentation.
