Independence Health System Heart Program Reaches Accreditation Milestone for Echocardiology
Independence Health System continues to demonstrate adherence to the highest standards for cardiovascular care, with Butler Memorial Hospital and Clarion Hospital each reaching a 10-plus year milestone anniversary for Adult Echocardiography Accreditation through the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). IAC launched the milestone recognition program, honoring facilities that have been continuously accredited for 10, 20, 25, and 30 years in celebration of their 25-year anniversary of granting accreditations. Independence Health System First in Region to Deploy Mobile CT Technology to Boost Robotic Capabilities
Independence Health System continues to diagnose and treat lung cancer sooner thanks to the addition of a mobile imaging device that provides real-time computed tomography (CT) scans during minimally invasive procedures. Thoracic surgeons Michael Szwerc, MD, FACS, and Brian Lace, MD, are the first in southwestern Pennsylvania to use this new technology in their practice at the Surgical Institute at Latrobe Hospital, where they recently conducted several cases with the new Siemens Cone Beam 3D CT scanner.

Independence Health System Supports Others on Road to Recovery Thanks to Grocer’s Successful Rehabilitation and Fundraising Bike Ride
The birth of a baby brings joy to the parents who have eagerly awaited the arrival. That birth is also anticipated by people who likely will never meet the family but who will benefit from their decision to participate in a unique donation opportunity. Starting in July, new mothers at the Family Additions Maternity Center at Westmoreland Hospital, part of Independence Health System, will be able to make an impact on patients all over the nation through the hospital’s new partnership with TriForLife Birth Tissue Recovery Group which facilitates placenta donations. Birth tissue donation is a type of living donation and does not impact the health of the mother or the newborn and is recognized as the single largest driver of the overall growth in living tissue donations by the American Association of Tissue Banks.
Ray Charley didn’t let a potentially life-ending accident keep him from pursuing his passion for cycling. His tenacity will help others on their road to recovery from surgery, illness or injury thanks to a successful fundraising ride that generated more than $71,000 for specialized rehabilitation equipment now in place at rehabilitation gyms operated by Independence Health System in Unity Township and North Huntingdon Township.
