MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR GENERAL

Message from the Governor General on the occasion of the 38th Performance Excellence Summit and Canada Awards for Excellence Ceremony As patron of the Canada Awards for Excellence, I would like to extend greetings to everyone attending the 38th annual Excellence Canada gala. Organizations that set themselves apart are evolving to meet new challenges. They are adapting to the changing priorities of our society, while ensuring the well-being of a skilled, productive and versatile workforce. We have seen this over the past two years, notably in those sectors that have been particularly affected by lockdown measures. The 18 exceptional organizations being recognized today understand how important these issues are to their continued success. Their collective performance reflects on our communities and our country as a whole and demonstrates that good corporate citizenship and smart business practices go hand in hand. Congratulations to the recipients on this well-deserved honour. I would also like to warmly congratulate the three recipients of the Board of Governors’ Special Recognition of Achievement Awards for their remarkable contributions to Canadian society or the global human condition. Thank you to the entire Excellence Canada team for continuing to foster and promote the creation of exemplary Canadian organizations. I wish you a memorable event.

Mary Simon

C H A I R

Greetings colleagues and friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff of Excellence Canada, welcome to the annual Performance Excellence Summit and 38th Canada Awards for Excellence ceremony. It is an honour to participate in this flagship national event as the Chair of Excellence Canada. I would like to extend congratulations to all the successful private, public and not-for-profit organizations that have met the rigorous standards and requirements through the Canada Awards for Excellence program. You are all outstanding role models of excellence. The theme of this year’s Performance Excellence Summit is “Moving forward with Excellence”. When I reflect on this theme, it speaks to giving hope and optimism that the pandemic is a catalyst to “moving forward” bringing the global community together and creating a new and thriving future. Despite every aspect of life, economy and society being impacted over the past two and a half years, it is important to acknowledge the learnings that have taken place, to celebrate the pockets of excellence that have been achieved and to search for the bright lights that have managed to shine through. For example, the rise of the digital economy during this time has greatly impacted remote working, telemedicine and access to health care and delivery services in general. Many have identified having more time for family and self as a silver lining from the COVID dark clouds. An opportunity for creativity and innovation has also been remarked. Within my own organization at SE Health where I recently stepped down as CEO after 30 years, I observed excellence flourish at every level in the organization. Greater autonomy to the front-line health care providers, innovative solutions for a changing health and safety situation and continued focus on operational excellence - all enabled SE Health to adapt and respond to the rapid and ever shifting environment that COVID set in motion. Notwithstanding the challenges we have all faced, there has been tremendous progress achieved and excellence has prevailed. What comes to mind is an anonymous quote: “Excellence is never an accident, it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities”. This year’s Performance Excellence Summit has been designed to celebrate with friends, provide opportunities to exchange creative ideas and to learn from others. Let’s all “Move Forward with Excellence” to lead to a better world for everyone. Take care, stay healthy and enjoy!

From Pitcher to Investor As a multi-business owner, inventor, investor, and mother of three, my journey to success has had its fair share of challenges. At this year’s event, it is my pleasure to share my personal recipe for success through adversity with the attendees and honorees of the Canadian Business Excellence Awards. I am so excited to share this story and find it helpful to have a playbook on hand with insights gathered along the way that one can refer to for that extra “push”. I’ve documented this journey from “Pitcher” to “Investor” in my e-book – The 5 Strategies That Lead To An Unstoppable Life. This book is jam-packed with tips and tools I share about my journey from product inventor with my first business idea to a successful multi-business owner and investor in others’ ideas. My career journey began in the corporate world and while I work for myself now, these tips are laid-out to be just as helpful for management-level employees as they are for entrepreneurs: anyone that wants unstoppable success! For the book, I coined the term Three Pillars of Possibility™: which stands for the Business, Emotional and Financial understanding that work together as our foundation to master breakthroughs.

This book is my gift to you. It is my wish for you that it helps you to develop the emotional, financial and professional resilience that will help you achieve your greatest dreams. My sincere congratulations to all of this year’s honorees. You are our inspiration!

CANADA AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE RECIPIENT

Bell Let’s Talk: Changing the Conversation Around Mental Health Written by: Mary Deacon, recipient of the Board of Governors’ Recogntion of Achievement Award

I

t is my great pleasure to be a recipient of the Board of Governors’ Recognition of Achievement Award for my work in mental health and I applaud Excellence Canada for continuing to shine a light on this important issue. How far we have come in mental health since my time leading the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation! I remember clearly, back in 2005, making significant efforts to persuade a Canadian corporation to adopt mental health its cause of choice in the same way CIBC had done for breast cancer. I went down this road with several major corporations, but at the end of the day, no one was willing to do it. I believed that these companies were missing a tremendous opportunity to show leadership on an important issue that was very overdue. When Bell stepped up and put the weight of its brand and its capabilities as a communications company behind mental health, it was the start of an incredible journey – not just for us, but also for the many Canadians who felt empowered to add their voices to the growing conversation to eradicate stigma. For the first 10 years of the Bell Let’s Talk mental health initiative, the overarching vision was to move mental health forward in Canada by reducing stigma, improving access to care, supporting world-class research, and leading by example in workplace mental health. Since 2010, we have committed over $129 million to Canadian mental health. The creation of Bell Let’s Talk Day in partnership with mental health experts and community organizations has played an active role in raising awareness, acceptance and action around this very common, treatable, yet highly stigmatized health issue. It has also helped make mental health part of our daily conversation and a greater political priority. It gives me hope that we are on the right path, with 78% of Canadians reporting they believe attitudes about mental illness have changed for the better since the first Bell Let’s Talk Day. The Day began with a goal of making a contribution towards eradicating the stigma that prevents too many people from seeking help. Today, it has grown into the largest mental health conversation in the world, something that all Canadians can be proud of. But Bell Let’s Talk is far more than just one day. We work throughout the year to keep the mental health conversation at the forefront and have invested in more than 1,300 organizations, large and small, from coast to coast to coast to increase access to mental health services. A great example is the annual Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund, which supports grassroots mental health projects that are making a difference in people’s lives each and every day. Since the fund launched in 2011, we have made over 1,000 grants, totaling $17 million to increase access to care. In 2020, at the end of an incredible decade of progress and change, we focused on a new, bold vision – a Canada where everyone could get the mental health support they needed. To help bring our vision to life, the Bell Let’s Talk Day campaign pivoted to focus on the idea that every action counts and we all have a role to play in moving mental health forward. Whether it’s tackling stigma, supporting ourselves and the people we care about, or taking action in our workplaces, schools and communities, we can all make a difference. In line with our vision, and as part of Bell’s commitment to taking a strong stance against racism and social injustice, we launched the Bell Let’s Talk Diversity Fund, which has since provided $3.35 million in grants to 28 organizations serving Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities. As challenging as it can be for anyone to access services, it is vitally important to ensure that services address barriers faced by marginalized

communities, and are accessible and culturally appropriate. Essential to the success of the Diversity Fund is our collaboration with an outstanding Circle of Advisors – mental health experts, community leaders and advocates with lived experience from BIPOC communities – to help ensure that we create lasting and meaningful change. When it comes to mental health, the majority of government funding goes to acute and chronic care in hospital settings. However, research shows that investing in prevention and early intervention programs can improve the trajectories of the lives of people struggling with mental health challenges, while lessening the need for more expensive hospital-based care. That’s why Bell Let’s Talk is making major investments to scale proven and effective programs, like Integrated Youth Services (IYS) in Canada. Think of IYS as “store front” hubs that provide wraparound mental, physical and social support for youth between the ages of 12 and 25. As a rapidly growing movement, I believe this model will help create a pan-Canadian system of care and is one of the most transformational things happening for mental health in Canada. Also in support of youth, through the establishment of the Bell Let’s Talk Post-Secondary Fund in 2021, we are helping to drive adoption of the National Standard of Canada for Mental Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students, developed in 2020. These are just two examples of programs that have the potential to change the lives of young people, enabling them to finish school, develop meaningful relationships and contribute to their communities and the economic prosperity of our country. As a corporation, Bell is deeply committed to creating a mentally healthy and safe workplace where all team members can thrive. It is essential to lead by example, and that is why we became engaged in the development of the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace as both the largest corporate funder and an early adopter. Bell’s mental health practices are robust, but there is always room for improvement – this is a journey, not a destination. That’s why we value Excellence Canada and their Mental Health at Work Award so highly. The independent audit helps us continue to improve our practices. This year, Bell is once again receiving the Canada Order of Excellence Award for Mental Health at Work, and I could not be more proud of our workplace team’s commitment to continuous learning and growth. It’s important to note that none of what we have accomplished over the past 12 years would be possible without the leadership and commitment of our CEO Mirko Bibic and the Bell team. It is both an honour and a privilege to work alongside my Bell colleagues to make this vision a reality, and I am filled with gratitude for having been given the opportunity to lead such an incredible initiative. I remember visiting CTV for the first Bell Let’s Talk Day, where a reporter sat me down and said, “Every day I talk about important things, but it’s not every day I get to talk about something that can change the world.” Although my personal mission to make a difference in mental health began because of the tragic deaths of my beloved brothers, David and Ted, to mental illness and suicide, the work I’ve done has been far from solitary. Having learned so much from other people with lived experience, health professionals, community organizations and researchers that Bell Let’s Talk supports, I believe we can all make a difference in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities, and I am full of hope for the future. By working together, we will create a Canada where everyone can get the mental health support they need.

Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) is a defined benefit (DB) pension plan that has been helping build the foundation for a financially secure retirement for Ontario’s healthcare workers since 1960. The reason HOOPP has been the leading defined benefit pension plan provider in the Ontario healthcare community is simple: the Plan is tailored to the healthcare sector and offers its members retirement income for life. Employee wellbeing has been a priority at HOOPP for the past decade. What started with an employee-led wellness committee has grown into a holistic program that is an integral part of the HOOPP culture. The program has evolved with a more targeted focus on mental health, and a mental health strategy being created in 2021.

“We appreciate everything our

employees do for HOOPP and believe that offering resources and programs to support their wellbeing, particularly their mental health, is a hugely important part of our culture and our success.” said Jeff Wendling, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re proud that our approach has earned HOOPP a Canada Awards for Excellence Gold certification for Mental Health at Work, and we look forward to finding ways to enhance our commitment to employees going forward.

« Nous sommes reconnaissants envers nos employés de tout ce qu’ils font pour HOOPP et nous croyons qu’offrir ressources et programmes pour contribuer à leur bien-être, surtout leur santé mentale, constitue une part énorme de notre culture et de notre succès. Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) is a professional association representing more than 14,000 REALTORS® and their companies. REBGV provides a variety of member services, including the Multiple Listing Service®. Ten local real estate brokers founded the association in 1919 to provide those engaged in real estate with the tools, information and services necessary to serve the home buying and selling needs of Greater Vancouver’s residents. In 1996, the association embarked on a journey of continuous improvement with the National Quality Institute, which later became Excellence Canada. Embedding excellence principles and practices into its culture over the last 26 years has made REBGV a high-performing organization focused on innovation. Over this time, REBGV has created an “improvement” and “challenge” culture rooted in Excellence Canada’s standards. Staff are encouraged to identify fail points throughout the organization. This empowers them to challenge existing practices and seek efficiencies that improve their business processes, culture, and, above all, service to their members.

CANADA AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE RECIPIENT

Culture matters – REBGV’s Excellence journey Written by: Mark Moldowan

S

ix years in, I still remember my first day at the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV). It was my first in-office job in years. I’d been working as a freelance writer, communication consultant, and pitchman for the better part of my career to that point, and I was nervous coming back into an office environment. Sure, I felt stuck in a rut selling my niche services, but there was at least one positive about being self-employed – leeway to develop new and interesting ways to do things. Returning to the office, to what I had previously experienced as a rigid and unmoving bureaucracy, was a daunting prospect. During the interview process, the HR person and the bigwigs at the table said that REBGV was forward-thinking and innovative. They even mentioned this “Excellence” program they were a part of to ensure these practices were ingrained in the culture. But for all I knew, this could have been a sales pitch – all style, no substance. So when I came in for my first day that February morning, and my new manager asked me, “What do you want to accomplish here in your first few months?” I was tempted to just give a corporate response. Thinking back to my interview process, I decided to just say what I actually thought. I outlined new strategies I thought might help, changes I thought would streamline some processes, and brought up a few areas I wanted to explore that could give us greater insights to the members we serve. I was absolutely floored when each item I brought up became a project I would be working on in my first few months. I soon realized that was my first taste of REBGV’s Excellence journey in action. But it wasn’t my last.

A history of innovation

Over a century ago, a small group of real estate brokers saw the need for standards, regulation, and good practice in Vancouver’s growing real estate sector. They founded the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver in 1919 and set us on a journey of innovation, excellence and continuous improvement that’s lasted over a century. For an organization to last this long, a strong culture of growth and evolution is a must. While this culture started long ago, its principles are timeless. Those leaders planned ahead. Because of their foresight REBGV pioneered technology, established award-winning service programs, and helped shape a bright future for our profession. Through the years, REBGV has always put people first – our staff, our members, and the public they serve. REBGV also takes a principled approach to upholding and enhancing the values of our founders. Cooperation. Ethics. Innovation. And Service.

Beginning our Excellence journey

Along the way, we recognized the need for a system of manage-

ment that would ensure we took a disciplined approach to achieving excellence. In 1996, we set out on a journey of continuous improvement with the National Quality Institute, which eventually became Excellence Canada. We first qualified for the Canada Awards for Excellence (CAE) silver trophy. We achieved gold three years later. CAE became Excellence Canada, and we qualified for the Order of Excellence for Quality in 2010. We re-certified for the Order of Excellence in 2013. From there, we set our sights on a new standard. In 2016, we achieved Excellence Canada’s Gold level under the Excellence, Innovation, and Wellness standard. Three years later, we were certified Platinum. And now, the Order of Excellence.

It’s our culture

We understand Excellence Canada is not just a test we take every three years. It’s a philosophy that keeps us at the forefront of innovation. We challenge ourselves to constantly improve to not only meet, but exceed, the standards. We brainstorm better ways of doing things. We map out key processes in each of our functional areas. We root out potential pitfalls and fix them. We track each change and improvement. Our staff commits to this process because excellence is about providing the best possible service to our members, and to each other. Customer service is always top of mind. For example, in 2020 when our provincial health officials first announced the social distancing mandates that would lead to almost two years of isolation, REBGV had already struck an emergency response group and was well prepared to continue operations in a work-from-home environment. As part of an essential service, we had to keep the lights on for our members so they could continue to serve the public, keep them informed of the latest rules and guidelines, and keep our staff safe. And we did it – all with no service interruption. In fact, we improved our efficiency, allowing us to embark on bigger and better projects.

Continuing Excellence

It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to build a culture like REBGV’s. But the results are worth it. I feel like over the past six years, my skills have progressed more than all the prior years I’d been working in communications. When I see the new employee announcements come through, I always crack a little smile. My mind goes right back to that cold, cloudy, February day when I first joined REBGV. I smile because I know that person, no matter what their role, will have the exact same moment as me. That moment where they see that people-focused, innovative culture up close and realize they’ve never worked for a place quite like REBGV before.

“Six years ago, Wajax experienced a painful tragedy; four of our

employees died by suicide. This harsh reality, along with our responsibilities as an employer, prompted us to devote dedicated resources to address the mental health and well-being of our teammates and their family members. Over the years we have worked hard to create and implement a best-in-class Health & Wellness program designed to support and empower every member of our Wajax family.

The vegetable garden shown here is planted by our Wajax/Motion team and began with the green thumb of Safaa Dankha, a well-respected Winder in our ERS category. Thanks to Safaa sharing his passion for gardening, the culture at our Wajax/Motion branch has evolved, as employees gather as a close-knit community, bond, and of course, savour the rewards of the harvest!
