MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR GENERAL
Message from the Governor General on the occasion of the 37th annual Canada Awards for Excellence By demonstrating leadership and commitment to excellence, organizations across Canada are creating healthier and safer workplaces. As a result, they foster the well-being of communities, as well as the engagement, innovation, productivity and success of its members. Each of today’s recipients have been dedicated to excellence for many years, doing good in their community and in Canada. They have led by example, showing caring, compassion and generosity. Most of all they have proven that social consciousness goes hand-in-hand with smart business practices, and that it is always possible to do better for Canadian employees, now in and in the future. Thank you to all those at Excellence Canada for continuing to recognize deserving Canadian organizations. And congratulations to all of you being honoured here today!
Mary May Simon

C H A I R
Greetings colleagues and friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff of Excellence Canada, welcome to the annual Performance Excellence Summit and 37th Canada Awards for Excellence ceremony. It is an honour to participate in this flagship national event, both as the Chair of Excellence Canada and the CEO of SE Health, an organization that continues to live and breathe its own journey to excellence. On that note, I would like to extend congratulations to all of the leading private, public and not-for-profit organizations that have met the rigorous standards and requirements through the Canada Awards for Excellence program. You are all truly role models of excellence. The theme of this year’s Performance Excellence Summit is “Building Back Better: Reimagine, Restructure, Recover.” When I reflect on this theme, it speaks to a hopeful future and how we can make it a reality. As the global pandemic wears on, it has never been more important to acknowledge that excellence grows in hard times, not easy ones. If we are discouraged by adversity, we will never reach the heights of excellence. Despite the unprecedented and ongoing challenges of the past year, there have also been many bright spots worth celebrating. The global effort to develop and distribute an effective vaccine for COVID-19 is helping us bring the virus under control. After a lagging start, Canada hit its stride and now enjoys one of the highest rates of vaccination in the world. Within my own organization, I watched excellence flourish as our health professionals and team consistently rose to the occasion and met challenges head on. At the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, one of the most decorated gymnasts of all times, Simone Biles – herself no stranger to adversity – shone a powerful light on the connection between mental health and high performance, reminding us that winning should never come at the expense of wellbeing. And when we needed a dose of inspiration, Gurdeep Pandher was there, dancing in the Yukon and spreading joy and positivity throughout Canada and beyond. This is what leadership is all about. Remember – despite challenges, excellence prevails. As organizations committed to excellence, we are well positioned to play a role in Building Back Better and creating a hopeful future. This year’s Performance Excellence Summit has been designed to inspire you and provide some creative new ideas to take back to your teams. I hope you will also take the time to self-reflect on your own wellness and personal excellence journey. And of course, the Summit is a great opportunity to network with colleagues from other award-winning organizations who are just as committed to achieving excellence as you are. Take care, stay healthy and enjoy!

« Quand nous soutenons le bien-être des membres de notre communauté universitaire c’est la recherche, l’apprentissage, l’entreprenariat et l’innovation qui en profitent. Je suis fier d’accepter la certification de niveau Or pour la Santé mentale au travail d’Excellence Canada parce que j’ai vu les efforts que beaucoup ont fait pour contribuer aux politiques, stratégies, pratiques et ressources qui soutiennent notre communauté.
