e start where else, then the W beginning and the very first in the Playstation 4 “Spider-Man”

line-up of releases from Hot Toys and that is the Advanced Suit release. This suit made it’s way onto all the marketing materials for the game so even if you haven’t played it (and you really should!) you’ll no doubt be accustomed to its design with the

VGM31

striking white Spider-logo emblazoned on the characters chest. It also marked the point at which people began to see the path that was being laid out by Hot Toys as theres just so many suits within that game, that surely we’d be seeing more revealed before too long, right? Well yes we would see more figures announced and even beyond the time of writing, we’ll no doubt see countless more.

For the first one out of the gates, the Advanced Suit has set the bar high in terms of everything we should expect from every future release as it firmly establishes itself in the MCU Iron Man spot (though lets be honest, there’s sure to be many more variants & exclusive releases of Mr. Stark in the near future).

don a denim jacket and pick up an electric guitar. The variant first saw the limelight through various Comic Arcs making this the first of the PS4 Spidey Hot Toys which brings a comic-based Spider-Man to life via another form of media. The figure is again

built on that same underbody as the prior variant but is far more characterful thanks to those horns and overall punkish attitude. Now we know that this version of the character isn’t to everyones taste but we think it’s got a lot of charm, especially when matching that with the craftsmenship of the Hot Toys design team with their focus extending as far as the many various buttons & badges that adorn the denim jacket. Overall, its another competent piece which shows Hot Toy’s are willing to take on suits from right across the spectrum

SCARLET SPIDER VGM34

ow the Scarlet Spider N stands out for so many reasons but main-

ly it’s the characters long history with Marvel Comics and we’re finally able to bring that character into the world of OneSixth collecting. As a Toy Fair Exclusive, this guy carries a far bigger profile and is easily one of the most popular of all the currently announced Spider-Men.

The figure also illustrated the ability for Hot Toys to add a variety of material texture across the surface of the figure from the cloth-material of the hoody to the red lycra-style suit. What this release also did, was underline the Hot Toys intention of singling out Fan-Favourite designs and putting them aside for Event Exclusives as we’ll see again with Spider-Man 2099. he Iron Spider is another intriguing release from the Hot Toys team as its another comic-originating suit that has been modernised through the game and then released through Hot Toys and its likely the closest we’re going to get! The suit design incorporates the 3 Waldoes stemming from the figures back which are presented in a very mechanical style but each are fully articulated making this figure the one with the most range of motion and ability to recreate a whole host of Spider-Man poses. This also aids the figure which doesn’t feature any further eyelets so

anything to help bring out some variance of expression is very welcome. Again, much like the Scarlet Spider, this variant features a multi-texted body suit alongside metallic accents but there is an area of danger for collectors to take note of. That being, of-course, the wrinkles that arise when leaving the figure strongly posed for any length of time. That said, this does look to be one of more technical releases within the lineup and one that we are very much looking forward to getting our hands on!

ing appearance, especially when put up against all the Reds & Blues of your Spider-Man collection. The suit is essentially a photo-negative take on the standard “Advanced Suit” but it’s really that reversal that makes it all the more impactful even if it’s the same figure underneath. This extends largely to the accessories too which are much the same so if you already have the first release, then perhaps you’ll have to consider wheth-

er it’s worth you picking up this variant for the looks alone. There is a discussion to be made about companies including Hot Toys, releasing variants of the same character albeit with a different colour-scheme as we see it alot within our collecting industry. Hot Toys themselves are known for it with their recent “Tron” Neon Tech Iron Man & War Machine releases & we’ll no doubt see more of those down the line but will that also extend to these Spider-Man releases? And if so, will the demand be there to scoop them up?

ne of the benefits of these O many Spider-Man variants from Hot Toys is the ability to

on other characters down the line. The Spider-Armour Mk.IV features a reflective finish right across the figure which gives off a metallic sheen in normal light and when under certain LED lighting, will reveal a luminous web pattern, making this one of the more technical releases in this lineup. The figure also comes the closest to the classic Red & Blue outfit worn by Spider-Man in so many of his story arc’s so that in-itself, makes this a variant well worth picking up, even more so if you’re coming at this from a gaming standpoint. Now at the time of writing, this figure is not released and we’ve only seen a handful of images

which show the luminous effect with the figure out on display at Hot Toys Secret Base so it will be interesting to see how it holds up amongst regular collectors. Again, over time this figure may well suffer from the joint creasing but time will tell on that but hopefully this experiment pays off for Hot Toys and it will open the door for further characters down the line who feature a more complex design so we’re very much looking forward to see this guy inhand.

long time ago, in a galaxy A not so far away, a dream was born. That dream was to one day

own dioramas, and display action figures in environments as true to the source material as possible. Upon looking for these dioramas, nothing was found! So the dream seemed to be impossible. That is, until the realisation came that these display pieces could be created from scratch, the dream was reignited. Enter: Dagobah Customs! Hi I’m Dakota, the owner of Dagobah Customs dioramas and 3D printed accessories. I’ve been making dioramas for about 3 years, and have been a Star Wars fan since i was 5. normal figures and vehicles our favorite companies provide. My focus is 1:12 scale items, but we do offer both 1:18 and 1:6 items too! The most recent project was a collaboration with the New York based designer: Figureworks.

Figureworks helped bring to life the renders and detailed measurements that diehard fans really appreciate. By finding source material from the original set designs, he scaled these models

to 1:12 for Black Series collectors and photographers to drool over. With 3D printed accuracy, and inventive design, this project came to life!

The Smuggler’s Alley is a sold out, limited edition recreation of the scene in A New Hope where the Sandtroopers are looking for the heroes and droids. Included in the set is a power generator and moving door to recreate the scene where C-3PO is hiding from the Empire. This set also doubles as a fantastic display piece to have for either photos or figures to pose on. With a magnetised floor and texture sand base, this will be something to show all your friends who have a love for miniatures and Star Wars too!

over your Lweooking working timeline can see that

you’ve collaborated with some massive brands including Hasbro, Nike, Sony & Marvel. How did you develop your abilities to be able to have something to offer those platforms? I did about ten years of drawing comic books before stepping into toy and game work? Comic books are a very fast paced work environment, with lots of challenging things to draw. You are really trying to capture a story in the most dynamic way. Most properties are trying to do that in one form or another, you are just changing the format of how you tell that story. You are just trying to adapt the story from the client to the format of their offering, and find the best way to say what needs to be said.

What has the been the most surreal moment in your relationships with all these brands? The moment where you had to step back and think “Damn, is this really happening?” Every once in a while I would see giant banners somewhere? At Comic-con or at Toy fair or something they will have giant banner of the Black series pieces I have done. It crazy to see them that big. I went for a run the other day and saw my Angry Orchard tree on the side of a tractor trailer, that was pretty nuts. G R A N D M O F F TA R K I N

Well I have recently got to do some book covers which was a new milestone for me, I would love to try and do a few more of those, play in that world a little longer. I have been doing a lot of concept art lately as well, which is really fun. I enjoy designing characters, and developing them fully. I have also been getting back into comics again as well. Comics is my first love, and it will always be my artistic touchstone. Its basically where I learned almost everything I know, so I would like to come back to it in one form or another. My goal for the next year or so is to get back to drawing and painting a little more for myself and to assemble a few sketchbooks or art books.

ow for most of N our audience of Collectors,

I worked on staff at a branding agency called Pilot for a long time, I was their main illustrator for a while. At one point I was doing a bunch of licensing art for The Force Awakens, and one of the pieces got pulled to represent the Black Series when it entered the black and red phase.

capabilities alongside such a pivotal moment with the re-introduction of Star Wars. Where you thinking of it in such terms? I definitely wasn’t thinking about things like that at the time. My director just told me that these new pieces were going on the new Black Series boxes (they had designed the new boxes). At that time I had already been involved with the Black Series, but in a much more limited way. Just a few illustrations for the first few waves. When it changed to The Force Awakens, the illustrations changed to just me. To be honest i didn’t even know it was just going to be me at the time.

In total, do you know how many characters you’ve rendered as part of The Black Series line? I lost count. I used keep track of the number, but then things like Black Series Trivial Pursuit, the Titanium Series Montage and the Galaxies Edge packs, throw the number around a lot. People forget about those in the greater number of illustrations, but those were some of the hardest pieces to do, so they count in the total to me. Around 500 I think?

MR. BLACK SERIES

All of the recent Gaming Greats from Gamespot are definitely on that list. Other than that, there are a few others. I loved Drawing the Enfys Nest Speeder? It was really complicated and difficult, and I like that. I loved a few of the archive pieces? Bossk man, as a fan,I just love Bossk. Those pieces were fun because i got to add a third tone to them. They feel more complete to me. Off the top of my head? Just some random favorites, battle damage Phasma, Dengar, the ComicCon Sith Trooper, Grievous. Strangely enough, Moloch, I see him at every Target and always feel bad, because man that figure just doesn’t sell. I always feel like I screwed up somehow. I buy him occasionally and give him to the kids on my street. I was walking my dog Sam recently and saw the Moloch I gave to the kids just randomly on the lawn. Poor Moloch, even when he gets rescued, dude still gets shit on.

And which characters gave you the most sleepless nights? Luke. Because I loved Luke so much as a kid, it hurts that I was so bad at drawing him. Really anyone with fair skin. Luke, Leia, and Amidala are the real pains in the ass. The only one that was really bad that doesn’t match up with the pale skin problem is the Chewybacca/C3po pack. Fuck, I got absolutely put through the wringer on that one. It gives me anxiety to even think about it.

The very first time I did it I was worried about it. The process was more complicated for the printing end of things than I thought it was gonna be. I did a Shocktrooper with red in it, and the highlights were very, very pink. The next round I was ready and I had figured it out by then. When that last round of Gaming Greats hit, I loved how they printed. Back to a more creative standpoint now and what would you say to people out there who have artistic abilities and are dreaming of working alongside licences such as Star Wars - whats your professional advice? I had a really difficult time adapting to working on larger licenses

And finally, we know that The Black Series is undergoing something of a re-design on the packaging side with the latest Wave and you’ll no longer creatively be a part of that set-up. What will

you miss the most from this partnership and whats next for Gregory Titus? There will be a lot of things that I miss, but the Black Series fans are really the main thing. The rest of the things are fun, but superficial. I stayed as long as I did because I really wanted to see it through to the end for those guys. It was a great motivator to be better and try harder. People really responded to not just the pieces, but to some of the process that I wrote about. The support played a part in not just the way that I worked, but in the way that I communicated about that work. I started to see the story of the process as part of the piece itself. The writing and art working together in a new way, beyond its intended purpose of selling action figures you know? It was a real joy to develop that process, and the Black Series fans were integral to that. As a person that had to stifle a bit of his drawing voice, it was good to find a new voice in in translating the process to them.

the Black Series box illustrations and whether you were trepidatious towards that decision?

actually. When I worked in comics, people pay to see how YOU draw. Your voice through storytelling is what they want. Your style. In my experience as you get to larger franchises, you need to err on the side of realistic interpretation. It depends on the job of course. Everything is a little different. My comic style was a little wild though, and it didn’t translate well to working on movie licenses. So I had to change it up as I went. I kept my own style to work on the projects that it fit for, but I also developed a few other most realistic ways of drawing. You need to be able to adapt to the jobs needs. I had to learn that my style for comics wasn’t the right way for everything. You need to have a toolbox of styles; and you pull out the right tool for the job.

toy photo shoots is capturing the flashiest and most epic practical effect possible; whether that be water, fire or dirt! But the only thing better than a practical effect is two practical effects! I started this shot like any other one. I posed the figures as human-like and dynamically as I could given my skill as a poser and the articulation limits of these two Black Series Storm Troopers from Hasbro. The Blue trooper is a Gamestop Exclusive Gaming Greats: Storm Trooper Commander. The Red Trooper is a formerly Walmart Exclusive Imperial Shock Trooper. I was shooting in the parking lot of my apartment complex, so I needed to make sure all angles and placement are done

perfectly so the photo remained immersed in the Star Wars universe, despite its actual location. I also set up another small tripod for my smartphone to record behind the scenes video for social media.

A Toy and Product Photographer Specializing in practical effects and bringing explosive life to static objects.

Once I had the figures posed and my angle placement of my camera ready, I poured enough water on the ground beneath them to give the entire scene a reflective surface. I like the look of this technique so I do it often in toy shoots on pavement. My hopeful plan in the end of this shot is to have an explosive and wet battle scene with a perfect combination of water and fire.

y favorite thing about toy M photography and my most common goal in almost all of my

+

+ get the exact effect I want, TeraoIsettings need to make sure my camare very precise. My

most important setting is a fast shutter speed. My water and fire will be moving quickly so this will make each little particle effect in the photo nice and crispy. I then adjust ISO and aperture accordingly with how much light I have outside that is illuminated in my camera screen. I usually prefer a low f-stop in aperture in hopes of achieving a bokeh effect in my practical effects

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

The fast shutter speed naturally results in a dark photo so I need to use handheld LED lighting to make sure my action figures are still well lit. The lighting I use is from a company called Lume Cube. This company is very well

+ known in the Toy community for being very powerful, portable and durable. I am an affiliate with the company so I have many lights available for me to use! The way I plan to capture fire in my shot is by using a small firework called a Crackling ball. Once one of these little bad boys is lit, it explodes with a loud crack and dozens of little sparks. The explosion only lasts for about a second and a half so timing is everything. This little booms bursts give an amazing effect in a toy shot! Once I had it all setup, I was finally ready to take the shot! I approach all toy shoots with future post processing in mind.

I publish my “Behind the Scenes” and Tutorials on Youtube, describing each step, in hopes to teach others my methods. My usual technique is to take several shots and combine them all together in Adobe Photoshop to make one perfect shot! I had a water bottle at hand and a Crackling Ball placed strategically behind the figures. Once I lit the firework with my handy blowtorch, I quickly held down the camera trigger and poured water in front of the camera, in hopes of capturing as many sparks and splashes as possible. I did this several times until I had plenty of shots to work with while post editing. After the Crackling Ball Splash session, I lit a basic sparkler and took several shots of the spark around many different body parts

+

of the troopers to achieve extra sparks in the foreground and some creative lighting. Once I feel like I have taken enough shots, I pack up, go inside, and immediately slide my SD card into my laptop to begin editing. I can spend up to a couple hours layering and making everything fit exactly how I wanted. As usual and with this shot particularly, there are definitely things I wish I had done differently, but I was overall pleased with how the final product came out. JARED MIDDLETON @SIRDORK730

THE 10 BEST TOY BIZ MARVEL LEGENDS

In 2002, Toy Biz reinvented action figures with their highly detailed 6-inch line of action figures called Marvel Legends. Each figure came packed with super poseablility, a comic book and diorama stand. They were like small super-poseable statues with collector friendly clam shell packaging. Now, we look back to put together a list of our favorite Marvel Legends released by Toy Biz from 2002 to 2006. This is our list of the 10 best Toy Biz Marvel Legends.

FIGURE FACT: Inspired by Spider-Man Classics Series 1 & 2, Toy Biz started the Marvel Legends toy line in 2002 using the same approach with the clam-shell packaging and included a comic book with each figure. This is where the legend began.

In 2005, Toy Biz introduced the “Build-A-Figure” concept starting with the Galactus Series. This was a way to get collectors to buy more figures in the series that it still used today.

n Issue one I explored Metal Series metaseries of Tokusatsu, in particular Space Sheriff Gavan, and how it related to the SHFiguarts line of action figures. In this issue, I would like to change focus from heroes of metal to the Ultra metaseries, which consists of the ultra popular Ultraman franchise with manga, nearly forty different television series, and well over thirty movie adaptations. Even the most casual of fans have probably encountered the alien race on Netflix with the first season of the anime being released in 2019.

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

For the unfamiliar, Ultraman debuted in early 1966 with Ultra Q as a sci-fi investigative procedural but later that year adopted the theme that would continue on in the second Ultraman series. Ultraman is of an alien race and becomes one with a human host to thwart kaiju, monsters, that have made their way to Earth. Ultraman is a great show, but the kaiju were the true stars. They were unique, powerful, and fascinating. Powers could be as concrete as being overly large and destructive to as conceptually abstract as mind control. Viewers were never bored. Ultraman is another intellectual property that Bandai covers extremely well in their SHFiguarts line of action figures. The Tamashii website lists 71 distinct figures

from across the various shows, and the kaiju are extremely impressive. While the first Ultraman (the first show named as such) figure was released in 2016 to coincide with the show’s 50th anniversary, the first kaiju wasn’t released until a year later with the alien Baltan. The following year Baltan also received a special release as a Tamashii exclusive with figures that simulated his holographic projections that made him such a difficult adversary. In all, the 1966 Ultraman show has been populated with seven distinct kaiju with the eighth being the special Baltan release. Five of the eight were Tamashii exclusives (sadly meaning its unlikely we will ever see a rerelease) with the other three (Gomora, Baltan, and Zetton) being general releases open to everyone. Ultraman has had his hands full over the years.

hile all the kaiju were uniquely designed to match the television counterparts, it was the monster Gomora that is the true masterpiece of the group. The Godzilla-esque kaiju articulated well with a tail segmented into 13 distinct points of articulation that allowed for various posing and tail action. Additionally, Gomora came with a damaged tail piece that looks realistic and makes this figure a true gem.

Detail that in some cases that can be difficult to distinguish from statues. While many companies have mastered either one or the other, design over function or vice versa, how many can claim to do both? How many have added that all important action to the figure?

For those interested in adding these figures as permanent residents, the road to collector nirvana is paved with gold. One just has to find and follow the appropriate yellow-brick road. All are available in one way or another on the secondary market while Baltan and Zetton remain available through major retailers. The market for Tamashii exclusives ever only moves higher. In addition the release of the Netflix series has renewed interest in the older shows as they are able to be viewed online. Is there hope for more kaiju? Perhaps. Bandai has dedicated resources into the amazingly detailed SHMonsterArts line and have been steadily releasing Ultraman related figures though the last kaiju released was in July 2019 with Black King. Could a return to the 1966 series be on the horizon? 2021 is the 55th anniversary so fingers crossed.

The ant/beetle-like Antlar was another figure that is a particularly notable for its detailed design and likeness to the actual costume used in the show. The thorax and antennae are impressive even for a line of figures that excels in being detail orientated. In truth it is Bandai’s ability to sculpt stunningly realistic detail while maintaining the figures articulation and usability.

To be simultaneously posable and displayable is no easy feat. There is a balance that the SHFiguarts line handles extremely well, and in the kaiju for the Ultraman line this is perfectly on display.

to me is a Tmentoyseries&photography of Art both in arrangephotography taking.

The poses are very important in bringing every character to life and what is important is also the technique of taking pictures in order to create beautiful works of art. I will explain a little about the techniques that I use in each of my works which are very simple, it can be done at home and is easy to learn. First, I only use 2 lights in the back right and left corners of the set up - The lamp is commonly called an RGB lamp that can change colour. Secondly, I use additional lighting from my cellphone screen using the “Colour Flashlight application - this is the key to my every shot as I use the

light painting method. So to use this light painting method, the room must be dark and it must be a slow shutter in order to move the cellphone screen to illuminate the object of the photo. When the shutter camera is pressed, we can move the cellphone screen in the direction we want it to be illuminated - very simple and inexpensive, but the light produced in my opinion is very characteristic in every shot. Another supporting factor is the theme and set up of the diorama, and we must determine the theme or concept or idea of the story for the photo we want to create, then arrange the set up of the diorama. The diorama that I always use,

diorama that I always use is one that I made Tandhemyself to match my Toy Photography needs one more thing that is very important in my

opinion is creating dimension in every shooting. How to create that dimension? The requirement is foreground (the object in front of the photo object) then the photo object and background. Don’t forget the foreground space in every picture we take. This often happens where the photographer thinks too much about the background and object, so he

forgets to include a foreground. Did that happen to you? Foreground is the object or space that is located between the object and the photographer. Foreground is what can help add 3D effects to a photo and a sense of depth & texture. With practise, we can get used to it so do it routinely and continuously to take pictures until you feel accustomed and you’ll be come proficient. That’s my short way of creating my photo - again, very easyily and simplely but very effectively.

MARVEL TO PUBLISH PREDATOR & ALIEN COMICS

O

ne area that has largely been overlooked in amongst all the discussion around the Disney / FOX deal is Publishing, namely comics and what will happen to the licensors which had long standing relationships with FOX and its assets. One such publisher is Dark Horse Comics which was the home of both the Predator & Aliens licenses prior to the merger but now, Disney are looking to move these two in-house with Marvel Comics taking up publishing duties for future comic releases.

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

The new comic series will feature new and classic characters from Earth and beyond to explore never-before-seen corners of both the Alien and Predator universes.

Following the debut of Alien in 1979 and Predator in 1987, the films built a cult following and expanded rapidly to include toys, games, novels, and comic books, eventually leading to 2004’s landmark crossover Alien vs. Predator.

Marvel’s new stories will draw from all of these properties, building on decades of multimedia storytelling.

A NEW ERA? A CLOSER LOOK AT THE BLACK SERIES PACKAGING RE-DESIGN

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

Hasbro The Black Series Packaging Facelift

ARTICLE BY M AT T H E Y W O O D

the end of May 2020, TBlackowards Hasbro shocked the Star Wars Series collecting community with its reveal of drastically new product packaging, which opts for a much vibrant and muralistic approach than the rather sterile black and red numbered boxes that preceded them. The change was made to supposedly save on packaging costs, and to cut down on plastic, which is commendable, but as all things collectors go, even a change to a line’s box design could be problematic for those who covet collecting the figures that reside within them.

I for one really dig the new Black Series box design, which does seem slimmer in size, but also more vibrant and appealing looking thanks to the new mural and color coding scheme. I find the new art to be much more appealing than the Gregory Titus drawings that have graced Black Series boxes for some time now. It’s not that Titus’ art wasn’t appealing; it is just not as evocative and powerful looking as the mural-like art pieces that grace the new packaging.

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

“ I C A N ’ T S E E A B E T T E R V E S S E L F O R D I S P L AY I N G T H E M T H E N W H AT H A S B R O HAS COME UP WITH.”

You have to also appreciate that the murals seem to be color coded to films, shows, and/or time periods, and the fact that it appears that the art for each box of a particular film or series, will form a complete mural when lined up together. For those who still insist on collecting boxes, I can’t see a better vessel for displaying them than what Hasbro has come up with. Just wait until you see a suggestion one of our fan’s made (Check out the second part of this article for SWTS fan feedback) about these boxes to see how some are thinking about taking advantage of the new art, because I think it’s a fantastic way to enjoy the new Black Series murals while also not adding to clutter around your collection room.

had to line up every figure in order according to their box number. Although, there came a time in my life where I had to break from my Father’s conditioning and ditch the box fetish, and now outside of high-end figures, I toss every box, including Black Series boxes, right into the trash. It is a very liberating experience, and a life change that has allowed me to collect even more awesome Star Wars Toys because I have more room to display them out of boxes, and I’m not spending money on boxes to store boxes. Smart!

THE END

There’s no doubt that this new box style provides a much more artistic looking container for your figures, but as a long-time collector and someone who was brainwashed about the importance of boxes, I do understand why some Black Series fans aren’t thrilled with the design change. This is especially true for those collectors who formed OCD around the big numbers on the old boxes to keep them all lined up and in order. Trust me, I do feel your pain, as I once never opened figure boxes and

those of you who aren’t Fstillorthrilled about this change, or feel the need to line up your

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

Black Series boxes in numerical order, I encourage you to take this design refresh from Hasbro as a chance to break free of your box collecting fetish. Yes, the boxes look much more appealing thanks to the art, but they’re still just boxes that add no real value to a figure. We live in an era of mass production, so unless a figure is truly limited in its release, there’s no reason to keep them in boxes. The days of ensuring a great ROI many years down the road when you try to sell your goods to another Star Wars sucker who loves your figure as much as you once did are mostly gone, so silence the little collector voice in your head and start chucking these things away! It is not an easy habit to break, so we are here for you. Think of it as Star Wars Time Show Box Collectors Anonymous! One day, you may be saying the pledge like I do now: “My name is Matt, and I haven’t kept a Black Series box in over three years, and I’m a better collector for it!” Now those were just my opinions as a long time Star Wars collector and avid fan of the Black Series line, but my co-host Nick hit up our fan base to solicit some feedback from them. In the next part of this article on the new Black Series box design, he presents some of their choice quotes and polling data to paint a broader picture of how the Black Series community received the design change news.

FINAL WORD BY N I C K C A M I N I TA

A

s Matt mentioned above, I am not much of a collector myself, but I do appreciate good art and artistic vision when I see it. I really like what Hasbro has done here, and while it is unfortunate that Greg Titus’ art isn’t being featured anymore, I do appreciate the creativity put into making interconnected murals for each set of figures. It turns what used to be relatively static box art into a really awesome piece of artwork that could one day be displayed on its

own. Just imagine it, 5 years from now when we have a ton of these boxes out in the wild, you may be able to put together side panels from each movie and have a new piece to hang on your wall.

My recommendation for all of you collectors out there is just cut the side panels off, throw away the rest of the box, and keep them in a binder. One day you might have a fun project to put together!

YES 90%

Spoiler alert! I don’t think many will heed my call for box collecting reform! In fact, most of our audience like the new design, and some have come up with pretty creative ways to use the new side murals that are featured with each figure. The official Star Wars Time poll received over 100 responses, and 90% of voters said that they like the new box design.

Some of the direct feedback revealed some positives and negatives of the new box updates. Check out some of the responses below!

@BUDFUTU

Love them! Although I’m an opener, I still keep my boxes in boxes. These are worthy of displaying empty. Love the green ROTJ ones.

@SCIONXTC

I love them!! Ever since I was a kid I’ve always appreciated package art. I used to save all the boxes & cardbacks from all my toys. I probably won’t save the boxes of these but I will cut the side of the boxes off and frame it like a giant mural.

@ R U S T B E LT C O L L E C T O R

Change is nice. It would have been cool if the red / black box set had ended at 100, that would have been a cool little touch. These boxes remind me of the Marvel Legends, but are unique enough that they don’t blend together. I’m all for boxes that themselves are pieces of art...

@ M A R K WA L K E R P H O T O

Very Marvel Legends. As a Toy Photographer, mine come straight out of the box and the box goes in the loft anyway, but I like them. Love the colour scheme for the different movie / era’s too, though I can imagine the shape causing issues for the in-box collectors & displayers

E XC L U M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E T W O

@VISUALFORCE

Really bummed that they are no longer using @gregorytitus’s work. But I’m loving the more colourful boxes and the “mural” look. I’m a box collector, so this makes me happy!
