CLIVE AGRAN PINE CLIFFS RESORT, THE ALGARVE
S
pectacular golf holes can induce swing paralysis. I first succumbed to this miserable malaise on the third tee at the Durban Golf and Country Club a few years’ ago in South Africa. Ranked among the top ten golf holes of the world, I was so in awe that my jaw dropped open in an unattractive way as I prepared to tee off. My whole body then went into a kind of involuntary spasm and my ball sliced into the distance never to be seen again. So, although I’ve played the course, I can’t honestly claim to have played that hole. Indeed, until now, I’ve never even mentioned it. My sub-conscious thoughtfully reminded me of the experience as I stepped onto the ninth or sixth tee at the Pine Cliffs Resort in the Algarve. Although it’s not famous in the conventional sense, it’s a hole that features prominently on all the promotional literature of this superb resort and

so it commands respect in the way that celebrities do. Fabulous though the views are of the pounding Atlantic surf thundering into the beautiful sand beach below from this clifftop eerie, it’s not a spot upon which to dwell too long. Erosion is evident in the receding crags and crevices of the reddened cliffs and the thought did cross my mind that a combination of global warming and divot-digging golf clubs might see the demise of this bit at any moment. Nicknamed the ‘Devil’s Parlour’, there’s no fairway on this 230yard par three. There’s just the small matter of a 170-yard carry over a ball-gobbling chasm. Even the flag was only visible from the waist up as I let fly a four-wood that never looked anything other than glorious. The three-foot, birdie putt was a formality and for me “that teeshot” was the only interesting topic of conversation as I sat afterwards in the scent-laden air sipping a cool lager with my playing partners on the magnificent Clubhouse terrace.

We had all enjoyed what is often described as the best nine-holer in Portugal. If nothing else, the course dramatically demonstrates that the modern obsession with length is at best misguided. Although only two of the holes are more than 420 yards, all of them require care and demand respect. Essentially, the course calls for precision rather than power. Apart from bunkers and the occasional gorge, its principal defence is provided by the numerous umbrella pines that are liberally sprinkled about and have an extraordinary knack of getting in the way. Although not especially large or particularly close to one another, they are nevertheless remarkably effective shot blockers. Always presented in immaculate condition and with greens as good as you will find anywhere in the Algarve, 16

this Martin Hawtree designed cliff-top challenge should be enough of a treat to entice golfers. Located very handily no more than half-an-hour from Faro and extremely close to the bustling seaside town of Albufeira, the Pine Cliffs Resort is also exceptionally convenient to numerous other great courses in the area – including Quinta da Lago, Vilamoura, Val do Lobo and Vila Sol – and therefore makes an ideal golfing base. It is also blessed with exceptional practice facilities including an excellent driving range, a pitching and chipping area and a large putting green. There’s also a modern Golf Academy equipped with all the latest teaching technology and a number of PGA professionals happy to give lessons. Although the course and golf facilities explain some of the enormous appeal that the Pine ISSUE 6

Cliffs Resort has for golfers, they are by no means the whole story. For a start there is a truly magnificent sandy beach at the foot of the cliffs. Reachable by a lift as well as steps, it’s arguably the best in the Algarve. With swimming, sailing, surfing, snorkeling and a range of other super watersports on offer, it’s undoubtedly one of the best places to be if you’re not playing golf. There are several superb tennis courts, a health club with an indoor heated swimming pool, five further pools outside and some simply beautiful gardens. There’s the enormously popular Pirate Kids Club, where children are constantly supervised and can safely be left whilst their parents enjoy themselves out on the golf course. ISSUE 6
There’s a mouth-watering range of dining options from simple snacks on the beach to fine dining in a glorious gourmet restaurant. The hotel, the Sheraton Algarve, is pure class. Essentially Portuguese in style with subtle Arab influences, it contains a number of intimate courtyards and inner terraces that offer welcome shade during the hottest part of the day. The rooms are delightfully sophisticated, elegantly furnished and are as comfortable as they are attractive. Most face either the golf course or the Atlantic. The pretty islands of Grand Be and Petit can be visited on foot at low tide, with the Fort National reachable on foot from St Malo's longest beach, the Grand Plage. If you enjoy hiking, the GR 34 coastal path travels right around the Emeral Coast and extends across most of Brittany's coast from Mont St Michel to Le Tour-de-Parc. With so many crêperies in the town, you'll be sure to find somewhere to try Brittany's famous galettes, savoury pancakes made with buckwheat and filled with ham, sausage, cheese, scallops and whatever you else might choose, as well as the sweet crêpes. Dinan
Established in 1887, Dinard is France’s secondoldest club and is steeped in history. Totally authentic and simply oozing class and quality, it’s an absolute joy from the first tee to the final green. With sandy turf, rolling fairways, classic pot bunkering, wonderful sea views, heather, gorse and small, well-defended greens, it has
everything you would expect of a great links course of international renown. And the Art Deco clubhouse is an absolute gem. At less than 6000 yards, it’s a dramatic illustration that length is not a necessary component of a great course. Unquestionably a ‘must play’ for those with a feel for golf’s history and traditions.

GOLF DE BREST IROISE Saint-Urbain About ten miles east of Brest and just three miles south of Landernau, Brest Iroise has the distinction of being the most westerly course in France. Designed by Michael Fenn and laid out in 1976, it has been created on wonderfully natural terrain that is absolutely ideal for golf. It’s wild and rugged heath and moorland with enough elevation to provide plenty of slopes and loads of visual interest.
GOLF DE SAINT-SAMSON Pleumeur Bodou The golf course is located in Northern Brittany, on the beautiful Pink Coast, surrounded by moorlands and pine forest. The Clubhouse and some holes offer a gorgeous view to the sea, which is 1.5 km away. The 18 holes are very varied, gently testing and require quite a bit of experience. The golf course is fairly flat and not exhausting.

ST MALO GOLF RESORT Le Tronchet
Located on the Emerald coast, the championship course of St Malo is the largest golf course in Brittany covering 250 acres of land. The golf course is built around the
Mirloup Lake so a few of the holes feature water. With undulating fairways and many trees, the track at St Malo will offer golfers a decent test on their golf holiday.
GOLF DES SABLES D’OR Fréhel Originally designed as a tourist attraction for the seaside resort of Sables-d'Or-les-Pins, the golf course has changed since the Belle Époque, yet still retains its charm. The original 9 holes were designed in 1925, when the northeast coast of Cape Fréhel was beginning to attract a clientele of wealthy holidaymakers. In 1991, a further 9 holes were added, and the small course became an 18hole course perfectly suited to the requirements of modern golfers.

The Domaine de Cicé-Blossac is located just 15 minutes from downtown Rennes - now 1h 25 by train from Paris. Since the beginning of 2010, the Domaine de Cicé-Blossac has upgraded the course and facilities to make it one of the best golf courses in Brittany.
At 6,202 yards, Freslonnière doesn’t seem that long, but what it lacks in length it makes up in tactical difficulty.
Also at the Domaine de Cicé-Blossac you will find, a 5 star hotel, spa ‘Cinq Mondes’ and a restaurant with terrace overlooking the green on the 18th hole.
With narrow, tree-lined fairways, the course requires accuracy off the tee. There are some tricky doglegs and a lot of water along the way making this a tough but beautiful golf course.

GOLF DU DOMAINE DES ORMES Situated between St Malo and Comborg, Des Ormes is set in a 370 acre estate surrounding a 16th century château. Our opinion: A wonderful complex which has a hotel, superb facilities and a great course. Favourite Hole: 10th.
GOLF DE LA FRESLONNIÈRE Freslonnière was opened in 1989 and designed by Alain du Bouexic. It is a high-class parkland course. Our opinion: Good for the short accurate player. Favourite Hole: 8th.
GOLF DE GRANVILLE Located at Bréville, Golf de Granville is a true links and offers sensational views across to the Channel Islands. Our opinion: A ‘must play’ if you enjoy links golf. Favourite Hole: 5th.
GOLF DE CICÉ BLOSSAC This course is very much in the American style. Suitable for all golfers, it’s an easy walk and has wide open fairways and large greens. Our opinion: Another very good course worth playing in the Rennes area. Favourite Hole: 9th.

TPC DANZANTE BAY – LORETO The 7,237-yard course at TPC Danzante Bay climbs through inspiring canyons on the front nine, visits the beach briefly for the 12th and 13th holes before the climax is revealed. The par-3 17th hole will quickly become one of the world’s great destination par 3s, a hole so dramatic that golfers will come just to play its tee shot. The elevated tees on no. 17 look down upon an hour-glass-shaped green cut into seaside cliffs.
The hole sits isolated from the rest of the course on the other side of the mountains. It was Perry who made the discovery and pushed for routing changes to accommodate its construction. The key to its addition was building two shorter par 4s that climb the mountainside without feeling overbearing. The just-as-scenic final hole, a stout par 4, tumbles downhill toward the resort.
DIAMANTE CABO SAN LUCAS - THE DUNES COURSE Designed by 20-time PGA tour winner Davis Love III, The Dunes course is located beachfront, overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean. Using the natural sand dunes, Love created one of the most diverse and finest courses in all of Mexico inclusive of generous fairways and large, rolling greens. Half of the layout plays along the Sea of Cortes while the other half wanders inland through native wetlands and desert vegetation.
