AMBITIOUS PLANS AT PGA CATALUNYA
C
elebrating 20 years at the top of European golf, PGA Catalunya Resort, home of Spain’s No. 1 course*, has announced ambitious development plans for 2019/2020, including an additional €25 million investment in real estate and lifestyle facilities. This new investment adds to the combined €55 million announced in 2016 as part of the resort’s overall Master Plan, and will focus on developing a range of new opportunities and lifestyle facilities across the 300 hectare estate, including a man-made recreational lake and Lake Club, a comprehensive new Wellness Centre, and multiple real estate developments. David Plana, CEO of PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “We enjoyed a very successful 2018. Our luxury hotel, Hotel Camiral, went from strength to strength with excellent visitor growth, and we also saw the exciting development of new real estate areas – L’Alzina, L’Olivera and La Selva, with a number of these units set to complete this year.

www.exclusivegolfandtravel.co.uk
“We are constantly striving to evolve and add to our offering at PGA Catalunya Resort. Our investment and development plans for the year ahead demonstrate our commitment to growth and to maintaining our position as one of Europe’s leading lifestyle and real estate resorts.” Over 70% of the European Tour Destination’s real estate inventory has been sold to date, with both domestic and international buyers citing the resort’s extensive facilities, brand integrity and strong positioning in the market as important factors in their investment decisions. This, coupled with a 20-year history of credibility and success to its name, demonstrates how PGA Catalunya Resort is leading the way in offering secure, high-quality real estate investments. Since launching its real estate offering in 2012, the 36-hole venue has undergone a dramatic evolution, becoming a next generation luxury resort development with an array of lifestyle facilities and sports amenities beyond golf, as well as two on-site hotels. It certainly also has the necessary infrastructure. The roads are excellent and there are hundreds of hotels from the comparatively modest to the simply luxurious. The only commodity of which it is rather short is water. The stuff you drink, not swim in. The shortage of water is relevant to the often vexed issue of irrigating courses. Acutely conscious of this, the existing courses have gone to extreme lengths to harvest their rainfall and be selfsufficient. Just 10 miles east of Paphos and overlooking the site where Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea, Aphrodite Hills is a wonderfully impressive resort with a superb course. Designer Cabell Robinson must have wrestled with a few problems when trying to decide on the layout. Although he doubtless relished the elevation, of which there is plenty, the site rather awkwardly bestrides two plateaux. A deep gorge lies between them and Mr Robinson must have confronted a stimulating mix of problems and challenges. The lush are inviting. The greens, which are very large, are quick and everything from the flowerbeds upwards is well
maintained. The only serious criticism is you have to take a buggy which, for those who like to walk, is irritating. However, with several long drives to the next tee and some perilous descents and steep climbs, there’s no alternative. The finish is strong with the toughest par four on the course, the 16th, followed by a tricky par three and then a splendid par five complete with a well-protected green squeezed between a lake and two bunkers. If you struggle here, there will doubtless be dozens smugly sipping beer and watching you suffer from the comfort of the clubhouse. The only serious threat to Aphrodite Hills’ claim to be the best course on the island comes from Eléa. Situated in Paphos, this Nick Faldo creation is sensationally good. Although it appears wide open with generous fairways, it’s a lot tougher and tighter than that. Reflecting the character of its designer, it’s a rather technical course that puts a premium on precision and contains plenty of bunkers and waste areas to punish inaccuracy. Having said that, it’s an extraordinarily beautiful course and great fun even if you can’t thread a needle from 225 yards.

Minthis Hills A change of name is rarely a good sign as it suggests an unhappy past and a desperate attempt to establish a new beginning. However, the radical re-build that transformed Tsada Golf Club into Minthis Hills was so comprehensive that a new name was justified. Incidentally, Minthis comes from Stavros tis Minthis, the name of the 12th century monastery that stood near the site.
Originally built in 1994, major renovation work which required the reconstruction of every tee and bunker and a couple of new greens, began in 2006 and was completed the following year. It was well worth the considerable effort and expense as the new course is terrific.
It now offers a great variety of holes, superb views and enough problems to challenge even the most accomplished. Occupying a wonderfully elevated position Buggies are popular but certainly not not far short of 2000 feet above sea level, essential. Secret Valley Designed by a local man and only the second course to be opened in Cyprus, it was created largely in response to demand from the considerable expatriate British community. No one knows for certain where the name ‘Secret Valley’ came from but, with tall craggy cliffs rising almost vertically on both sides, it’s difficult to access and therefore, perhaps, something of a secret. Because the valley slopes gently towards the sea and there are consequently no steep inclines to negotiate, the course is eminently walkable. The downside is that there are no especially dramatic drops from elevated tees. There is a significant stream that weaves throughout the entire length of the course. After winter rain it swells into a more impressive feature but even in the summer months, when the water largely disappears, its rocky bed creates a serious hazard. The

numerous pretty wooden bridges that cross it are attractive features that add considerably to the visual appeal. A more obvious problem for golfers are the trees which line most fairways. Although not thick enough to form woods, they effectively punish the wayward shot. Because the shortage of water prevents the rough from growing to any great height and at 6500 yards off the back tees the course is not too long, these ‘nuisance’ trees are a legitimate means for the course to defend itself. There are two other courses that deserve a mention. Close to Larnaca, Vikla Golf and Country Club is a relaxed, low-key club where you can wear what you like and play all day long for not very much. And there is Korineum in the Turkish north of the island which is set among olive groves, enjoys glorious views up to the Kyrenia Mountains and is truly lovely. www.exclusivegolfandtravel.co.uk

TRAVEL GUIDE NORMANDY
Mont St Michel The abbey is a Romanesque and Gothic masterpiece of design and a phenomenal work of architecture, with underground crypts and chapels that were built to hold up the huge church on top. Building first began on the Mont in 708 when a sanctuary was created in honour of the archangel and the abbey church was completed in the early 1000s, a feat constructed at 80m above sea level. It became a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages and pilgrims would walk up the 900 plus
steps on their knees as a sign of penance. The Mont can even be seen on the Bayeux Tapestry from 1066. After holding out against the English during the Hundred Year's War, the abbey was later used by the atheist government of the French Revolution as a prison for priests who refused to renounce their vows. It was restored in the 19th century and is a beautiful place for some quiet reflection with incredible views across the salt flats of the bay of Mont St Michel.

GOLF CLUB DU CHAMP DE BATAILLE With one of the most stunning golf holes you’re ever likely to see, the 17th, a short but fiendishly tight par three across a valley simply brimming with 100 year old rhododendrons. Our opinion: A ‘must play’ when in Normandy. Favourite Hole: 17th.
HOSTELLERIE DU VALLON ****** The pretty town of Trouville, a seaside resort since the 1850s, owes its continuing popularity to two things - a wonderful sandy beach and a willingness to constantly update amenities. Not least of today’s attractions is this hotel.

CASA DE CAMPO The Links Pete Dye designed this course only a few years after Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog. It first greeted golfers in 1975 and has drawn comparisons to traditional British and Scottish links courses thanks to its fairways and open putting surfaces that invite golfers to play shots along the ground. This moderately hilly course has several lagoons and lakes that are popular with wading birds and features tall, dense bay and guinea jungle-grass rough, as well as numerous bunkers. Most of its holes dogleg either right or left over the undulating landscape. The Links was completely overhauled in 2012 to make it as challenging as its sister courses. The P.B. Dye-designed La Cana Golf Club was established in 2001 as an 18hole course, with the new nine-hole Hacienda added in 2012. The Tortuga and Arrecife nines capture the stunning Caribbean scenery with 14 ocean-view holes and four memorable holes that play right on the beach. Arrecife’s nine culminates in two spectacular fairways that skirt the azure waters and greens where you feel to reach out and touch the sea. Hacienda is both challenging and beautiful in its design as it takes the golfer inland through dense, colorful tropical vegetation. La Cana’s well- guarded putting surfaces provide a stern test for even the lowest handicappers. La Cana is a course that’s perfect for golfers of all skill levels and greets all with a relaxing atmosphere complemented by wide, mostly at fairways.

HARD ROCK GOLF CLUB AT CANA BAY Location: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Macao Holes: 18 Par: 72; Yardage: 7,253 Designer: Jack Nicklaus www.hardrockhotelpuntacana.com
The Nicklaus-designed golf course, which opened in March 2010, presents golfers with a challenge at each hole and is playable by golfers of any skill level. The first golf course to carry the iconic Hard Rock brand, and located just inland from the beachfront, Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana, winds through beautiful native tropical vegetation that extends right up to the edge of the fairways, with no rough so that straight-hitting is at a premium. The course lives up to its rock ‘n’ roll branding; each hole is named after a famous rock song and putts roll pretty fast on the slick but small, sloping greens. There are also several blind shots that add to the challenge of this 7,253-yard layout.
