The slopes of Snowmass, Colorado call for peak family fun, and also served as muse to photographer Slim Aarons during the 1960s.
C
elebrity and lifestyle photographer Slim Aarons always had a keen eye for capturing the “good life,” as he coined it. And the slopes of Snowmass, Colorado, were no exception. During the 1960s actor Gary Cooper discovered Aspen/Snowmass, and became the frontrunner of Hollywood celebs that have frequented its famous peaks. Yet this historic photo also tells a story of family fun, celebrated throughout this issue. Titled “Snowmass Gathering,” Aarons framed a sassy group of skiers attending a mountaintop party in Snowmass, in April 1968. Today, history is still being made amongst these summits. When snow blankets Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, Snowmass transforms into a winter wonderland. Families gravitate to the mountain’s mixed terrain— wide cruiser runs for beginners and challenging moguls for the daredevils—as well as convenient ski-in/ski-out lodging. Exclusive Resorts features five ski-in/ski-out homes at the Timbers Resorts Residence Club, allowing prime slopeside access. Complimentary ski valet service and storage makes for an effortless transition from the slopes to après ski activities, and the local concierge team can arrange for everything from lift tickets to ski lessons. Each three-bedroom mountain retreat has a large great room with a fireplace, ideal for family gatherings at day’s end, where all ages swap highlights from ski school or hiking Highland Bowl. And a gourmet kitchen removes the stress of needing to constantly dine out. Ullr Nights is one evening worth pulling the family away from the fireplace. Ride the gondola to the top of Snowmass Mountain and celebrate the Norse God of Snow with music, sleigh riding, snow tubing, and s’mores. Your snow angels might disappear by morning, but the memories you and your family make will last a lifetime. --exclusiveresorts.com/Snowmass-CO

Why Vacation?
It seems like a simple question. Some would tell you it’s because you want to “indulge” and “relax.” And while that may be true, we believe there is something more. Something deeper. So, in late 2015 we commissioned a study to investigate leading motivators for families choosing how and where to vacation. The results? More than 55 percent of families surveyed cited either “broadening their family’s worldview through new experiences” or “spending time together” as top drivers in the decision process. Only 10 percent of families surveyed cited luxuries (like 5-star resort amenities) as the most compelling. Surprised? We’re not. At Exclusive Resorts, we know fleeting dinner table talks are about as close as many of us get to family bonding in our hectic day-to-day lives. As such, vacations experienced with family and the memories made while traveling become all the more meaningful. For more than a decade we’ve crafted oneof-a-kind experiences for Members, strengthening family bonds and creating lasting memories. We’ve been busy evolving our portfolio with vacations and global experiences designed to help you recharge, reconnect, and most importantly—have fun.

I
(FROM TOP): Over the Sedona desert, en route to the Grand Canyon to produce our CURATED feature, “If These Walls Could Talk” (page 112); with nearly 30 ER members during our week-long Grand Canyon Experience; a canyon campsite, with a once-ina-lifetime view.
know how fortunate I am to love what I do. But standing in the heart of Black Tail Canyon on day four of Exclusive Resorts’ Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey to the Grand Canyon, it dawned on me, as our river guide Ben played the flute and our group stood silent—in awe of this magical moment— that I was, in theory, “working.” As we produce the pages of CURATED, I’m grateful to be so lucky. At its best, travel inspires vivid memories of reflection, challenge, change, and connection. The trip to the Grand Canyon captured all of the above. And I assume, for most all on the trip, our memories are varied and deeply personal, merging at different moments as we navigated the ever-changing walls of this natural wonder. Photo director Stefanie Michejda and I followed Mexico City-based Alvaro Rodriguez and Marcela Cortina, along with their 14-year-old twins Mateo and Lucas, during this trip. Their unique family bond—readily apparent from day one—was only further enhanced and celebrated along the roaring banks of the storied Colorado River. By design, the experience connected our group quickly, and unforgettably. As we spilled over both raging and playful whitewater, each Member wore a life vest named after different parts of the Canyon. My life vest was coined “Black Tail Canyon.” Ironically, or perhaps right on point, my favorite moment of the trip was inside the aforementioned Black Tail Canyon, as geologist Wayne Ranney read a poem titled “The Great Unconformity.” Eerily silent, the slot canyon, located three miles back from the river, framed an is-this-for-real navy sky. And the history felt in the rocks that hugged us was simply sublime. With this, our Ski Issue, we also celebrate alpine destinations at their peak—where to go now, with tips from pro skiers, local legends, and ER Members. We also curate the power of family travel, as I witnessed firsthand in the Canyon. When helicoptered out of the Canyon, I doubt any of us left as we arrived—just as the waters have carved and crafted The Rim, travel carves new emotional landscapes within each of us. My hope is that within these pages you find inspiration to reconnect with the destinations, friends, and family most important to you. Happy Travels!

LA DOLCE VITA! The Amalfi Coast is calling…and with a new residence in Positano, Italy’s charm is easily celebrated.
O
cean vistas, sheer cliffs, and the la dolce vita vibe make the Amalfi Coast a timeless destination. Arguably Italy’s most scenic stretch of coastline, the famed road stretches from the port city of Salerno to the cliff top city of Sorrento. In between, spy terraced vineyards, pastelhued fishing villages, the mountaintop town of Ravello, and jet-setter favorites, Positano and Amalfi. Experience the UNESCO World Heritage region like a local (albeit, a very stylish local) when you stay in one of Exclusive Resorts’ Positano retreats. Villa Posto claims a prime address, just a 10-minute walk from the beach and lively village area. The threebedroom home is replete with Mediterranean décor, and guests can lounge around the large, private outdoor pool—a rarity on the Amalfi Coast. There’s also a citrus grove— pluck lemons and limes for afternoon poolside cocktails. Positano’s legendary tilework is on display in Villa Bella. This newly built, five-bedroom home glimpses spectacular mountain and sea views. You’ll easily fall into a ritual of taking breakfast on the back terrace and watching the sunset into the ocean from your infinity edge pool. Given this new stylish Italian residence, that next European escape just got a little more chic.

B
oston is feeling more like Boomtown than a college town of late, as innovative biotech companies continue to expand, startups launch left and right, and the biggest of big businesses, including GE, are staking their city claim. In tandem, new high-profile, chef-led restaurants and recent starchitect-designed museum renovations and expansions are increasing the city’s allure. Add these to the longstanding historic pleasures and its famous sporting ones—from Federalist architecture to the championshipwinning Patriots, and from the monuments of the Revolution-era freedom trail to the ballgames of Fenway Park (or, as Bostonians might call it, Fenway Pahk)—and today’s Boston is fast tracking on any traveler’s hit list. This new, three-night Escape from Exclusive Resorts’ Experience Collection features an insider’s itinerary to the best of Boston.
ITINERARY DAY ONE Arrive to your Beacon Hill Studio at the luxury boutique hotel XV Beacon, which holds pride of place in a turn-ofthe-century Beaux Arts building in the posh Beacon Hill neighborhood, just off the northeast corner of Boston Common. Spend the rest of your first day exploring the campuses of the city’s standout universities. If a suggested organized tour isn’t your thing, but art and architecture are, check out Harvard’s Fogg Museum, recently expanded and renovated by Italian architect Renzo Piano; or visit MIT’s Main Group of century-old Neoclassical buildings, which just underwent restoration and renovation.
DAY TWO Today you’ll be treated to a half-day tour of Boston’s famed Freedom Trail. As you move among the 16 historic buildings, monuments, and other sights that make up this fascinating 2.5-mile pathway, your guide will take you back in time, recounting our nation’s epic battles for self-rule and autonomy from the British. Stops include the gold-domed Massachusetts State House; the red-brick Faneuil Hall, where the revolutionary Sons of Liberty planned, plotted and protested against the Red Coats; and the Old North Church, from which Paul Revere’s compatriots shone the “one if by land, two if by sea” lanterns that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about in his poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” DAY THREE Boston without sports would be like Los Angeles without Hollywood, Miami without the beach, or Dublin without Guinness. That’s why we’re suggesting you devote this day to all things athletic, on guided tours of the Red Sox’s Fenway Park, the Celtics’ and Bruins’ TD Garden and, finally, Gillette Stadium, home to the multi-Super-Bowlwinning New England Patriots. DAY FOUR After breakfast, bid Boston a fond farewell — it’s time to head home after all too brief a treat. (But not before one more bowl of clam “chowdah,” if you can spare the time and calories.)
Packaged for two people, your three-night ER Escape includes three nights in a Beacon Hill Studio at XV Beacon Hotel, a breakfast credit for up to $60 per day, and guided three-hour Freedom Trail Tour. Speak with the Concierge to coordinate additional activities recommended above.

EUROPEAN PANACHE With Exclusive Resorts’ new Hotel Collection providing access to La Réserve’s posh properties, an across-the-pond jaunt awaits. BY LINDSEY TRAMUTA
In the pantheon of luxury lodging, few recognizable names are easily summoned to mind. Among these arbiters of experience is a man renowned as much for discretion as for extraordinary taste. Little may be known about multi-millionaire Michel Reybier, the vitner and hotelier behind La Réserve luxury properties in Paris, Ramatuelle, and Génève, but we do have the finer details. For one, he knows discerning travelers seek out intimate settings, state-of-the-art facilities, fine dining, and stellar wellness services. As such, his properties, each with a singular design focus, more than deliver. Three La Réserve hotels and villas were recently added to the esteemed Exclusive Resorts Hotel Collection, allowing Members to use their Membership to book stays at any of the three properties. The question now becomes: Just what kind of experience are you after? GO exclusiveresorts.com/residence-collection

LA RÉSERVE PARIS Opened in 2015, La Réserve Paris is the most recent addition to the brand's portfolio. Housed in a 19th-century mansion in the 8th arrondissement and once home to Pierre Cardin, the hotel was designed by Jacques Garcia in his signature 19th century Napoleon III style. Its luxe Louis XVI salon, done up in deep Bordeaux sofas, repurposed Versailles parquet and antique wood furnishings, and guest-only spaces—the spa, swimming pool, cigar room and library—transport guests into an intimate cocoon that evokes both a private club and a home-away-from-home. The property’s 26 suites and 14 rooms showcase understated design. If it’s palatial vistas you’re after, book the presidential suite with views of the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais glass roof, and the spires of Notre-Dame. DON’T MISS: Lunch or dinner at Le Gabriel, one of only 10 restaurants in France, and five in Paris, with two Michelin stars. LA RÉSERVE GÉNÈVE Don’t be misled by its locale on the shores of Lake Geneva: La Réserve’s flagship property surprises with an African game reserve interior, kitted out in oversized prints of lions and sculpted elephant heads. THE “IT” FACTOR Professional skier, mountaineer, and World Cup announcer Chris Davenport catches up with Olympian and World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who claims Vail as her home turf. Winning Globes is always in the forefront. I’m trying not to place more emphasis on that even though finals are in Aspen. It would be super cool to claim some titles in front of the home crowd, but I don’t want to put added pressure on myself. I’m hoping to just get the job done, race-byrace. When that point of the season rolls around and we come back to the US for those last races I’d like to be able to enjoy it for what it is!
YOU’VE HAD SO MANY AMAZING SUCCESSES ON THE WORLD CUP AND AT THE OLYMPICS. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY?
I don’t usually like to pick out my main competition because I don’t want to overlook someone. There is always some super fast girl who seems to come out of nowhere. But I know how much work it takes to get to the top. My competitors are working as hard as they can to get there every second of the day. I do expect that Frida Hansdotter, Wendy Holdner, and Veronika Zuzulova will still be ripping in slalom. Lara Gut is at the top of her game right now with Speed and GS so I’m sure she’ll be fast, as well as Eva-Maria Brem, and I’m highly anticipating the return of Anna Fenninger (now Anna Veith) since her injury last year. She’s one of the greatest racers of this generation and I’m hoping she comes back with a vengeance.
My first World Cup was in Åre, Sweden. It was such a beautiful evening for a night race— crisp air, perfect snow conditions, and super light snow flurries every so often. It was like a dream. I just remember feeling like it was the perfect time for my first win. YOU DOMINATED THE ASPEN WORLD CUP SLALOM COURSE LAST YEAR. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE ABOUT RACING IN ASPEN?
Racing in Aspen is awesome. Even in the past years when I didn’t have so much success it was still one of my favorite race weekends, but with the double slalom victories last year it was even sweeter. I love that time of year because everything feels so fresh. Winter is just beginning, the snow is new, the season has just started, and you can feel the excitement in the air. WE HAVE AN EXCITING SEASON COMING UP ON THE WOMEN’S TOUR, WITH NEW RACES AT KILLINGTON, SQUAW VALLEY, AND THEN THE WORLD CUP FINALS IN ASPEN. WINNING CRYSTAL GLOBE(S) ON HOME SOIL HAS TO BE FRONT OF MIND?

THERE ARE SO MANY FANTASTIC TECH SKIERS RIGHT NOW ON THE WOMEN’S TOUR, INCLUDING FRIDA HANSDOTTER, EVA-MARI BREM, AND OVERALL CHAMPION LARA GUT. WHO IS YOUR MAIN COMPETITION THIS SEASON?
YOU WERE THE YOUNGEST WORLD CUP SLALOM CHAMPION EVER. WHAT WAS A PRO AND CON WITH THAT LABEL?
Billie Jean King once said, “pressure is a privilege.” I truly believe that. The more people expect me to win, the more I feel like I can’t lose. That’s not to say I will win every race on every given day, but having labels like the youngest slalom champ in history just reminds me that I have put in a lot of work, and that work has paid off. I believe there is only one recipe for true
success— preparation. If I’m winning, it’s because I’m prepared, and if I’m prepared, I don’t feel pressure to win. WHEN YOU’RE AT HOME IN VAIL, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO HANG OUT?
Cinebistro movie theater. It has a burger bar with awesome burgers, sandwiches, and Loaded Fries, with cheese, bacon, and cooked onions. So good! If I want to hang out with my family we’ll usually go to Maya, a Mexican restaurant at the Westin Riverfront Beaver Creek. They have this appetizer called Quesa Fundido—Mexican cheese fondue—that I order every time. FAVORITE SKI RUN?
The Birds of Prey GS in Beaver Creek. That is such a fun trail to ski, whether it’s in gates or just freeskiing. ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH A YOUNG, UP-AND-COMING ATHLETE?
Have fun with it! Sports can be stressful, nerve-racking, frustrating. Sometimes it seems like you have to make every mistake possible before you figure out the right way down the mountain, but that is a really important process. Try to learn something from your sport every day, and know that you’ll use those lessons for the rest of your life. CURRENT BUCKET-LIST TRIP?
Africa or Thailand. But I don’t think I’ll make it to either of those places for a little while. WHEN DO WE GET TO GO FREESKIING TOGETHER?
Get in line, pal!

The Well-thy Life Key to an ultra-long, successful existence, says AccessCircles founder Carolee Friedlander, is forging meaningful connections. BY HEIDI MITCHELL

Taking those extra two weeks off each year just might help her—and everyone she touches—achieve ultralongevity in excellent health. And research backs her up. So who is this cheerleader for serious bonding while on holiday in an effort to promote wellness? Carolee Friedlander, former fashion-jewelry entrepreneur and current founder and CEO of AccessCircles, a network that ties together 2,000 women across the country with thought leaders from places like Johns Hopkins University and the Cleveland Clinic. Friedlander became particularly interested in wellness after selling her company and taking stock of her life in 2001. She was in good health, had grown, happy children, but still felt something missing. So she ratcheted up her involvement in women’s organizations in which she had played leadership roles and quickly realized “that when you get a bunch of ladies in a room, happy hormones are literally released. You really do feel energized.” AccessCircles was formed as a way to allow like-minded, high-networth women instant access to those feel-good hormones, as well as to experts armed with answers to wide-ranging, big questions: How am I going to save for a healthy life that now may last more than 100 years? Speakers sing the praises of the importance of taking time off, re-connecting with loved ones, and forgiveness as keys to ultralongevity. Friedlander seems to deeply understand this notion, which is why many of her events take place outside of her home base of Greenwich and New York City, and why she takes her extended family and friends (a clan of 15 spanning three generations) on vacations frequently—and encourages many to do the same. “There is something very powerful about experiencing a country and culture that is completely foreign and different from what we are accustomed to. Different art, music, food and religion provide incredibly enriching experiences. There is an element of surprise that everyone shares and bonds over,” she says. Several years ago, the grandmother of five took 13 of her family members to the Galapagos. “My grandson, who is now 6’5,” looks back on those photos and says he can’t believe how little he was,”
she recalls. “We still look at pictures from that trip and relive that experience over and over again. Travel can be like glue that knits your family together.” It is these shared experiences, like her trip to the Galapagos—or her most recent multigenerational family adventure with Exclusive Resorts to Costa Rica—that Friedlander credits with making “70 the new 50” for active people like her, arguing that, as long as we continue to make meaningful connections, we may be happy, healthy centenarians. “There was an interesting study that looked at five communities around the world where there are a lot of centenarians. And what they all had in common was their connectivity: they harvested their food together, they prepared it together, they ate it together,” she says. Friedlander likes to think of vacations similarly—as a time for shared, happy experiences. “Vacations are all about family and appreciating the precious time we have together. If you keep offering opportunities to bring families together, to have fun, to build new memories, to me that is as valuable as saving money for a life that will last 100 years.”-accesscircles.com

A Global Classroom Vacation isn’t just a way to bond with family—it expands your children’s worldview. A growing number of Exclusive Resorts Members are discovering the value in experiential education gleaned from travel. BY JEN MURPHY
M
any couples lament that they stopped traveling once they had kids. Yet having children may be the best excuse to take a trip. Gone are the days when a quick trip to Disney was the ultimate kids’ vacation. Today, discerning young explorers and their well-traveled parents want a broader travel experience, and more and more parents are discovering that travel is a key teacher. “Because travel is so immersive and puts children literally right in front of that castle, or geyser, or local tribe, it becomes personal, a real, imprinted experience they’ll never forget,” says Chris Chesak, Executive Director of the Family Trade Association. “I think that any parent that has traveled with a child has seen this transformational effect where the child’s eyes stare

in wonder, then they start asking a battery of questions, then they reflect on the situation and compare it to their own lives and their own living situation. There are times where you can see the moment where their minds are figuratively ‘blown’ by this exposure to new cultures, history, geography.” And research is exceedingly showing family travel is top of mind. A 2015 study conducted by the Family Travel Association and the New York University School of Professional Studies Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism showed family and multigenerational travel has become one of the hottest and fastest-growing segments of the entire tourism industry, with 93 percent of study participants saying they were either “likely” or “very likely” to travel with their families in the next two years. particular, the study found trips offering an educational component— including volunteer trips, safaris, national parks and ski and snowboard trips—are emerging as niche products for family travel. PASSPORT TO LEARNING
Exclusive Resorts Members Lisa and Angel Colmenares took their son Lucian to Los Cabos with the Club when he was a year old. “Angel and I love to travel and rather than change what we love because we were starting a family we made our son a part of it,” says Lisa. “Even if a child is too young to remember a trip, I think elements of a place—the sounds, the weather, the smells—stay with them.” When Lucian was eight, the Colmenares family visited the UK with Exclusive Resorts. Their residence in London was located next to Buckingham Palace, which piqued Lucian’s curiosity about the royal family. “He was so interested in the idea of a country having a queen that he wanted a postcard of her to carry around,” recalls Angel. When the family took the train to Scotland, they participated in a falconry class at St. Andrews. While most kids experience wildlife in the pages of National Geographic or at a zoo, Lucian fed an 18-pound bird out of his palm. “Being that close to an animal and having an expert telling you about it was interesting for all three of us,” says Angel. And the Colmeneras family is not alone in acknowledging the power of travel. Chesak, the father of two girls, recalls when his daughter, Lillian, then 10, asked why people’s houses were so different from her own during a trip to Costa Rica. “That resulted in a long conversation about how lucky we are to live in the United States and to have a home that is larger than those of the majority of people’s homes around the world,” he says. On that same trip, he watched as his daughter Sylvia went from being terrified by the idea of going on a zip line, to doing it in tandem with him, then insisting on doing it alone. “She was screaming with joy the whole way down,” he says.
“BECAUSE TRAVEL IS SO IMMERSIVE AND PUTS CHILDREN LITERALLY RIGHT IN FRONT OF THAT CASTLE, GEYSER, OR LOCAL TRIBE, IT BECOMES PERSONAL —A REAL, IMPRINTED EXPERIENCE THEY’LL NEVER FORGET.” -Chris Chesak, Executive Director of the Family Trade Association

Gina Bach, ER's Vice President of Experiences, who has been with the company for 10-plus years, adds, “Traveling is a phenomenal way for parents to show their kids the world is a live classroom. From learning up close and personal about wildlife, botany, and marine life in the Galapagos, to grasping geography not from a book but from being on another continent, travel makes maps come alive.” As interest and priorities of Members have shifted, including an emphasis on family travel, the Club’s offerings have evolved. “Our Members’ children have gone to a school in Kenya and not only have a better understanding of how fortunate they are, but those are real people and when Kenya is on the news, their little ears perk up to listen,” Bach adds. “Over the years, we have expanded the Experience Collection from four trips in 2008 to now offering 50+ unique itineraries for couples and 30

families each year.” As Lucian has gotten older, the Colmenares family has started choosing vacations introducing him to new foods as well as history. Last year, on a trip to Anguilla, the family took a boat to a tiny island for lunch where the locals showed Lucian how to eat a lobster. “This guy told Lucian that Americans leave all the good stuff and then showed him how to eat every piece,” says Lisa. “Lucian became really thoughtful after that about how important it is to use the whole animal.” This year the family went to Tuscany. Angel came home with a deeper knowledge of Italian wine varietals, and Lisa brushed up on her Italian. As for Lucian, “I learned that most of the towns in Tuscany were built in the period of the Etruscans,” he says. “I also learned I love all of the different flavors of gelato.”

THE VALUE OF TIME
Time is money, and for many executives time together with family may be the most valuable of all. During his tenure as CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, Don Thompson admits he didn’t have much time for family vacations. “But Exclusive Resorts made the most of the rare time we did have away together,” he says. “We could trust ER to execute a stress-free trip every time.” A Member since 2005, Don believes the Club allowed him to remain connected to his wife, Liz, and their two children Xavier, 23, and Maya, 20, ensuring family time was a priority despite his professional commitments. “The kids grew up with the Club,” says Don. “And in a way, the staff at the Club have become part of our family.” They jokingly refer to their ER Ambassador Alma Smith as Charlie. “She reminds us of Charlie in Charlie’s Angels,” explains Liz. “She works magic from behind the scenes.” With their Exclusive Resorts membership, they have taken guy trips, girl trips, spring break trips and cruises with ER’s Once in a Lifetime Journeys. Residence 211 in Los Cabos, Mexico, has become a home-away-from-home. “We consistently go back,” says Don. “As soon as I arrive I feel like I can exhale. We love that the ocean is steps from our door and we can hear the waves crashing at the shore. As soon as we walk down to the Beach Club, no less than five people are coming over to give us hugs. The staff know our favorite drink, our favorite food…even where we like our chairs set up. It feels like returning home.”
And family travel isn’t just about the kids, it also helps reconnect with partners and spouses. One year, Don worked with Alma to plan a surprise dinner on the beach in Los Cabos for he and Liz’s 30th wedding anniversary. “Don and the kids led me down to the beach with my eyes closed and they’d set up a pig roast. I knew nothing about it. We had our own staff to pamper us and the entire beach was ours for the evening.” While most teenagers dread vacations with mom and dad, Xavier says he feels lucky he’s gotten to experience the world with them. “My mom and I are total nerds and ER always sets us up with the most incredible tour guides,” he says. “When we cruised to Europe we had a guide in every port to tell us about the history and architecture. We always had private access to museums and didn’t have to wait in lines.” “It’s been really special to have my children study art or history and be able to connect what they’ve learned in the pages of a book to reality by visiting the Uffizi Museum in Florence or the Louvre in Paris,” says Liz. “That connection is absolutely priceless.” Education has always been a core value for Liz and Don and is at the heart of their latest venture, the Cleveland Avenue Foundation for Education, which funds numerous organizations dedicated to student success. “I love that we learn as a family when we travel with the Club,” says Liz. “Even meals become an education. When we stayed in a renovated farmhouse in Tuscany, a chef came to prepare dinner and Don, who is an excellent cook, was in the kitchen by his side taking notes.”

60 Days + Counting...
Two months on holiday may seem like a lot, but for Exclusive Resorts early adopters, the McCormacks, it’s just right. BY HEIDI MITCHELL
John perfects his casting at The Abaco Club; the McCormack clan during a ski trip to Sun Valley; touring Paris, an annual trip for Kathy McCormack.
T
he McCormacks do not take decisions lightly. When they were discussing a potential fourth child, the conversations were intense. When Kathy decided she’d take her 7-year-old daughter and niece to Paris every year, she stuck to it—for more than a decade. And when it came time to choose between a second home or another travel option, Chris invested months researching options. “At that point, I was pregnant with my fourth child, and I read an article in Greenwich Times about destination clubs, and Chris, who is in commercial real estate, was interested,” explains Kathy. “He is a meticulous reader and while he was going over the Exclusive Resorts Membership options, he realized, ‘Why wouldn’t we join for 60 days each year?’” So the couple signed up. That was back in 2005. Since then, while they still grapple with highly contentious issues— including which colleges to tour for their four children—when it comes to vacations, planning an excursion doesn’t add to their stress. For the Greenwich, Connecticut couple, they simply pick up the phone, speak to their Exclusive Resorts Vacation Ambassador about their interests and availability, and hop on a plane for pretty much wherever. “It’s never so much about where we want to go, it’s about what we are interested in,” explains Kathy. Exclusive Resorts encouraged the couple to take some unexpected trips, like a train from Paris through London and up to an historic Bovey Castle. “It was unbelievable. ER pushed us to go on vacations that we would never plan on our own,” Kathy says. “It was like having a friend with an apartment in Berlin who said, ‘Hey, want to go on vacation here?’” Having their own Vacation Ambassador, admits Chris, helps take the pain out of the decision-making process and push his family “to take some insane vacations,” like the one they took to Megeve, France, one summer. “We got the kids water skiing. We drove to Italy and had dinner. We literally went on a fantastic trip to a place in France that I had never heard of—with young children, which is

not something I would consider doing without a concierge available to take care of everything should all hell break loose,” says Chris. The family, all avid skiers, recently went back for Christmas. Sixty days actually goes by fast for the McCormacks. Chris gives a week each to his parents and brother, and Kathy often pops down to New York City and spends a few nights doing cultural immersions and eating out. “That leaves us with about 35 days each year,” she explains. Going fishing at The Abaco Club in The Bahamas has become a constant on the ER travel calendar (Chris books two years ahead); as has skiing, to wherever there is space during the McCormack’s desired travel dates. “Some people are like, ‘I’ll only go to Aspen!’ But I don’t care. I just want to go skiing. Aspen, Telluride, Megeve—whatever!” says Kathy. Chris notes a recent African safari as tops thus far for ER family memories, while he and Kathy also make a point of spending time at the Club’s two-bedroom villas at Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson each year. “If I had asked Chris, Hey, you want to go to a spa in Arizona? He’d be like ‘No!’ But it was open when we had time to travel about eight years ago, so we went,” recalls Kathy. Now Chris looks forward to his time at the award-winning resort. “He gets excited. Our close friends moved to California, so they come with us, and now that’s become another annual family tradition.” Kathy grew up going to same-same Cape Cod every summer. But after 10-plus years as ER Members, the McCormacks consider themselves lucky they don’t have the obligations that come with a summer or weekend home. “Some people have second homes and every year they have to go to Newport in summer and Vermont in winter,” she says. “But for us, we love the idea of trying new places.” Costa Rica, Kiawah Island, the Dordognes—for the McCormacks, they are all the family’s second homes, for 60 days a year. THE ULTIMATE AUTONOMOUS MACHINE As BMW celebrates its 100th anniversary, the brand’s future is driven by surprise, delight, and customized intelligence and design. BY MICHAEL FRANK
BMW is a brand known for a single key attribute—a superb driving experience. Yet if
Tesla has taught mainstream automakers anything, it’s that in the future driving will be optional. Yes, Tesla and other early-adopter brands (Google) have seen accidents as we lurch toward an autonomous future. But studies prove that humans are deadlier drivers than robots. And if the robots win, what happens to a brand like BMW, which has always been about the fun and feel of a fine sports sedan? BMW also faces another conundrum, where Millennials in the “sharing” economy view luxury as something to borrow. Autonomy means freedom from prior norms. And yet BMW has been thinking about these trends a lot longer than you’d guess, and this year, on the centenary of the brand (which also owns Rolls-Royce and Mini), it debuted a showcase series of the car of the future, well beyond 2050. Here’s how they envision cars working once Baby Boomers and Millennials enter retirement.

SHARED AUTONOMY
BMW says that by 2021 it will have fleets of shareable cars on the roads of major cities around the world. This is already happening. In London a program called DriveNow lets you borrow BMW and Mini models, and a pilot program in Seattle called ReachNow lets you borrow fleet cars (the model works like ZipCar where you borrow by the hour) and also enroll your own BMW or Mini to allow sharing. The next layer? Sharing a car that can drive itself. The slated 2021 target date dovetails neatly with BMW also debuting autonomous or nearly-autonomous technology. Instead of just Uber, a higher-level 7 series BMW could taxi you to an event. That car may not necessarily need a human driver. One advantage to sharing in that world (vs. the one we inhabit today) is that the owner would be able to control use cases; i.e., you might only loan your 7 Series for autonomous mode in a ReachNow scenario, not in a situation where the borrower could get behind the wheel. That is, when we get to trust the robots more than the humans.
So how does this borrowed-luxury model work? Just like ZipCar and other car-sharing models work today. You might join several different carmakers’ clubs. Yes, borrowing a Rolls-Royce would be a special and pricier option, but for certain occasions that tier in the BMW pantheon would be more approachable than full ownership.
you arrive, and, of course, knows you like sushi for dinner, and that you prefer to drive yourself and a sportier suspension setting. And that your favorite skin color for the body of the car is blue. You’d approach your loaner and instantly all of your preferences would be uploaded, the car’s shape would change, and your destination would be pre-loaded via an app on your phone.
YOU CAN STILL DRIVE!
MADE TO MEASURE
BMW stresses that even though autonomous capabilities will be built into everything they sell in half a decade, their brand DNA will always allow the owner to drive. It’s one thing to sit back and relax during your weekly grind into the office. Yet during a weekend spent navigating remote mountain roads, performance driving, brand managers stress, remains an attribute buyers and borrowers will want.
4D printing has the potential to create bespoke cars like never before. Yes, they’ll still have to meet safety and crash standards, but a car that can change form in the blink of an eye could also feature patterns keyed to a specific buyer—for instance a loaner fleet could be made for your company, or for a resort property that’s specific to that brand. If you’re not in that club your eye would tell you at once it’s a BMW, but not one you’d be able to buy or borrow. That would further distinguish the “club” model and BMW cache. And that is just the point.—bmw.com
CLUB MODEL
ADAPTIVE REALITY
This past June BMW recently showcased a Mini concept car with a “skin” that can change color and even appear to have different surface texture. Inside, instead of instruments or even LCDs, the entire windscreen acts as a transparent display. In the future, 4D printing will allow for manufacturing “alive” components that can move to adapt to circumstances. That means the body of the car could change color— even shape—on the fly, becoming more aerodynamic with speed, and altering physical attributes over time—an OS update of a sort could allow these morphings for fashion or function. Displays that are no longer fixed to surfaces but floating within the field of vision (think augmented reality) could signal hazards as well as supply information about potential stops along your destination. ADAPTING TO WHAT?
Part of the reason to have every physical surface mutable is to make customization possible, even in ownership-free circumstances. With the club model, the car knows your most frequent destinations, hunts for wired parking spaces before

ER Member Caitlin Fisher, Director of Sales for Katie Ermilio and Daily Cup of Couture blogger, reveals how family travel has inspired both fashion and multigenerational traditions.
I
t’s often said that travel not only fuels education, but can help inform careers. Such is the case for longtime Exclusive Resorts Member Caitlin Fisher. Her parents, also ER Members, took the family on vacations to far-flung locales when she was just a little one. As such, Fisher, who today is the Director of Sales for the women’s ready-to-wear brand, Katie Ermilio, in addition to blogging for the Daily Cup of Couture, was exposed to other cultures—including their varying fashions—at an early age. “Growing up, I was privileged to travel with my family, year after year, to amazing Exclusive Resorts destinations,” says Fisher. “Today, I’m fortunate enough to explore these incredible locales with my own children.” And along the way, whether traveling with parents or her children, Fisher has learned some tricks of the fashion trade, including packing

essentials. “Packing for a family trip can be daunting and in some cases, prohibitive,” she says. “But I’ve found the beauty and luxury of traveling with Exclusive Resorts is what you don’t need to pack! From cribs and changing pads, to sand toys and sippy cups, most everything you need for family fun is at your destination before you even fill your suitcase.” With details being hassle-free, Fisher has found that time with family is the most treasured gift of travel. “I can focus not on what I will bring, but the lasting memories created as a family,” she says. “I’ll never forgot taking my son to Kapalua Bay as a baby and getting to dip his tiny toes in the Pacific Ocean for the first time. The moment of pure joy absolutely took my breath away. So, pack your bags— sunshine awaits!”

Squats are key to ski conditioning; trainer Mike Bahn gives tips for a successful season.
W
Get Ski Fit Mike Bahn, fitness guru for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association, gives the inside track on prepping for the slopes.
hether you plan to bag 150 ski days this season or take an epic, week-long ski vacation, being in tip-top shape (or close) will guarantee a better time on and off the slopes. Need motivation to start pre-season training? “Imagine being able to ski all day with minimal fatigue and not being so achy you can’t walk the next day,” says Mike Bahn, strength and conditioning coordinator for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association in Park City. Bahn, who has trained Olympic freestyle mogul skiers Hannah Kearney and Heather McPhie, says many people make the mistake of hitting the gym a week before their annual ski vacation. “That will just make you sore,” he says. “A solid base of strength and athleticism will help minimize the effects of fatigue and prevent injury.” To develop a base-line ski fitness level, he suggests practicing a few keys moves as part of your regular routine and implementing stretching as part of your après ski session.
and side plank are two poses which will help strengthen the core. To work the obliques, which help with edge movement on the slopes, he suggests performing standing trunk twists. Keep the hips and torso facing forward as you twist the upper body side-to-side to engage the oblique muscles. Hold a weight for more challenge.
1. THE CORE IS YOUR STABILIZER
3. APRÈS SKI STRETCH
“Skiing is a full-body activity, not just lower-body,” he says. “Torso strength and stability is crucial. Very high forces are being transmitted from the legs and the ability of the torso to maintain integrity throughout and endure those forces as you fatigue can mean the difference between a great day or having to finish at lunch because your back hurts.” Plank
“The worst thing you can do after a ski session is to head to your room and call it a day,” he says. Stretch the quadriceps muscles by standing on one foot while holding your other foot to your glutes with your free hand. To stretch your hip flexors, take a kneeling stance on the ground with your head and chest up and reach both arms overhead.
2. POWER UP YOUR LEGS & GLUTES
“The legs act as shock absorbers, and energy transmitters and producers during a ski run,” he says. Squats, lunges and step-ups will develop strength in the hamstrings, quads, and glute muscles. He suggests mixing in single-leg exercises, like one-legged squats, to help develop equal strength in both sides of the body. Once you master stationary lunges, advance to walking lunges. Start with body weight and slowly add on weight, such as dumbbells or kettlebells.

With the new Bamford Spa slated for debut at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach, Miami’s sultry side is balanced with mother-daughter spa offerings, girl getaway treatments, and a seriously stylish design. BY ERIN LENTZ
f there’s any downside to Miami’s seductiveness, after several days spent pool hopping, dining, and cocktailing, some serious R+R may top the itinerary. And though Miami is known for its nightlife, it can also be a serene motherdaughter sojourn. Enter the 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach. Located on Collins Ave. along the growing north side of South Beach, this chic resort and spa has fast grown from new-kid-onthe-block to one of Miami’s most frequented hot spots. For visiting moms and daughters, the main attraction may be the 8,000-square-foot, full-service Bamford Spa, slated for a December 2016 grand opening. The wellness center is reason enough for a Miami escape, ideal for girlfriend getaways, too (gents, you’ll want to indulge as well). The spa’s design concept, which will echo the property’s overall style by the acclaimed Meyers Davis Studio, will be helmed by Debora Aguiar (residences and spa), and will bring the outdoors in. Customized massage, facials, and salon services will be on tap, in addition to countless group fitness programs to keep guests beach-ready. The enticement of the property is ultimately defined by a
prime locale (with direct beach access), a genuinely enthused staff, and an inherent Miami-chic vibe. Exclusive Resorts recently added 1 Hotel Homes to its portfolio—four threebedroom, three-and-a-half bath residences with ocean views feature Tesla service around South Beach and notable outdoor living areas. Though the posh residences are hard to leave, the amenities are what make this Miami getaway unforgettable. Claiming South Beach’s largest rooftop pool and lounge, aptly named 1 Rooftop, in addition to three other outdoor pools, 1 Hotel has captured the energetic Miami lifestyle. The rooftop is adults-only—a fun setting for older mother-daughter Members—with a revolving cast of DJs and the stellar WATR restaurant, which dishes savory, locally caught sushi and poke. Celebrity Chef and James Beard Award Winner Tom Colicchio anchors the food and wine scene, helming the main restaurant, Beachcraft, the lobby lounge bar, Tom on Collins, as well as the poolside restaurant, The Sandbox. And for younger visitors, the main pool is family friendly, with “seedlings services” for little ones held daily at Basecamp.

t’s hard to imagine traveling to a ski resort without skis. Yet, one company makes it possible, and actually stress-free. Ski Butlers features full-service, on-demand, on-site equipment rental without the hassle of battling bricks-and-mortar lines and fitting irregularities. And they offer top-of-the-line gear so renters aren’t just eliminating steps, but enhancing their entire on-mountain experience. “Whoever answers that phone has a lot of autonomy,” says Mike Cremeno, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ski Butlers. “They are the person’s ski concierge throughout the entire process.”
“If someone likes the Rossignol Souls 7s they rented in Aspen, they can get it in any of the other 36 markets when they go there,” he adds. “It’s really seamless.” That system integration across resorts in the U.S. and Canada means it’s almost easier to leave the equipment toting to Ski Butlers, which maintains updated skier profiles for each of their clients. The company is constantly refreshing its inventory for both skiers and snowboarders. “From beginner to expert, everyone should be on good stuff,” says Cremeno.
SKI BUTLERS’ STAFF WILL MEET GUESTS ON THE MOUNTAIN TO SWAP OUT GEAR AND MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT FIT. Once an order is made over the phone or online, Ski Butlers comes directly to Members in their Exclusive Resorts residence. Technicians outfit the whole family, and then if renters find themselves unhappy with their boots after a few runs, Ski Butlers’ staff will meet guests on the mountain to swap out gear and make sure they have the right fit. With two new additional markets opening this winter in Big Sky, Montana, and Sun Valley, Idaho, their service is more expansive than ever. The company started in Park City, Utah, in 2004 and has since grown into 37 luxury markets, serving clientele who desire a customized rental experience. They’ve also set up shop in some of their locations, like the operation recently added to the Waldorf Astoria in Park City. Ski Butlers had not expanded since 2010, wanting to dial-in their customer service and company culture before more growth, says Cremeno. But the time was right—as were the resorts—to add two more in 2016. 50

THE WALKER INN, LOS ANGELES
David Kaplan has been a global pioneer ever since co-founding Manhattan cocktail den Death & Co more than a decade ago. His latest project is another boundary pushing bar, this time in Los Angeles. The 27-seat Walker Inn borrows the idea of omo-kase, familiar from sushi bars. The tongue-in-cheek speakeasy is hidden behind the bar inside Koreatown’s funky Hotel Normandie and located behind a door with a brass plate reading “Secret Door.” “After a brief conversation, our bartenders assemble a selection of drinks tailored to a guest’s likes and dislikes, usually from the current menu, and served in half-sized portions to allow them to try as many different cocktails as possible,” Kaplan explains. “It’s a step beyond the traditional ‘bartender’s choice’.” His own recommendation from the current menu? For its key namesake ingredient, Bay Area-based distiller Hangar One vodka has relied on “fog catchers”—large nets strategically placed across the area by conservation charity Fog Quest. Mist from the Bay condenses into droplets, then pools at these collectors. It’s dispatched to head distiller Caley Shoemaker so she can blend this erstwhile fog with vodka distillate, creating a surprisingly rounded, sipping white spirit. The first batch is limited to just 2,400 worldwide; one day’s worth of bad weather per fog catcher is typically enough for a single bottle of this witty riff on San Francisco’s iffy weather. Take one home for $125 from reservebar.com, or sip a foggy martini at Del Posto in New York or Los Angeles’s Culver Hotel. NYC’S BOLLINGER AUCTION
LONDON’S SEEDLIP
Think of Seedlip, the first ever distilled non-alcoholic spirit, as the English countryside in a bottle. Devised by Ben Branson, the teetotal scion of a farming family in rural Norfolk, it’s prepared using six different botanicals, including cardamom, allspice, and cascarilla bark. The latter is a key component of Italian amaro Campari. Branson’s process involves using a neutral grain spirit as a base, which is copper pot-distilled before the nonalcoholic run-off is collected. Next, it’s hand-blended to create the final product. At £29.99 (around $45) per bottle, Seedlip is comparably priced to small batch liquors; Branson suggests serving it with tonic and a slice of pink grapefruit. After the initial run of 500 bottles instantly sold out, he’s expanded production—a second expression was recently released, again inspired by his rural childhood. Seedlip Garden is

On November 19 in New York City, Bollinger—one of champagne’s most storied houses—will stage a historic auction. Consisting of more than 50 individual lots of rare and exclusive bottles, it’s the culmination of a sixyear-long project combing through its caves and archives in Aÿ. The sale will showcase outstanding vintages, including some from the house’s vieilles vignes vineyard—a tiny walled patch of land that features a scant cluster of vines that survived the phylloxera onslaught. Even more intriguing, perhaps, is the marquee lot. During that six-year archival overhaul, the Bollinger team chanced on a forgotten stash of vintage bottles tucked into one corner of the cellar, including several from 1914. A famous prestige vintage, it was largely overseen by the women and children of the village after most of the house’s male staff were conscripted into the French army of World War I. “Despite everything happening in the world, the women still managed to bottle a very elegant wine,” says Chef de Caves Gilles Descotes. “The year was still clearly marked on the cork, although it had seriously shrunken, and amazingly enough, this centuryold wine still tasted superbly.” The still-fizzy champagne (the pressure is at 0.5kg, compared with a fresh bottle’s 6kg) will be offered as part of the Champagne Bollinger Experience, where the winning bidder and a guest will travel to the house itself to sample that century-old vintage. sothebys.com; bollinger.com; exclusiveresorts.com/New-YorkCity-NY

ELEVATION FINE DINING RESTAURANT. across the Alps, there are just 28 seats inside, plus a heated deck that overlooks the Wilson Range. The food also takes inspiration from Europe, specifically northern Italy. Chef Nico Peccedi grew up in the small ski village of Bormeo in the Italian Alps, close to the Swiss border. His ingredient-driven food is rustic, simple, and utterly delicious. “Alpine nature is wild and unpredictable,” he says. “You never know what you’re in for. My cooking is like that.” Peccedi has learned to cope with unpredictability. Each morning, he loads his ingredients on the back of a snowmobile and drives up to the restaurant. “Once, I got stuck driving the snowmobile when I was trying to bring up cheeses, prosciutto, and assorted salami to Alpino Vino,” he recalls. “It’s just part of working at a restaurant with only ski-in/ski-out access.” Cooking at nearly 12,000 feet has other challenges. Pedecci and his team must cook on a portable induction burner because the restaurant does not have gas and a magnum of champagne becomes a live grenade at extreme altitude. Even on a powder day, a line of hungry skiers waiting to order Pedecci’s tomato bisque and grilled cheese and pesto stretches down the See Forever trail. In the evenings, guests journey up the mountain by heated snow cat for a five-course dinner of such dishes as elk ribs and polenta paired with wine from Alpino Vino’s exceptional cellar. With just two seatings per night, dinner at Alpino Vino has become just as boast-worthy as tackling Telluride’s famous bump run, Mak-M-Stairs-Plunge. “For some people, adventure is super steep chutes,” says Pedecci. “For others, it’s a starlit ride up the mountain for a great dinner. In Telluride, you can do both.”

Ski In, Dance Out s Jim Carrey’s character famously states in the cult classic film Dumb and Dumber, “Take me to the place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.” This facetious quote has been so celebrated in Aspen that the Aspen Skiing Company introduced swag beer coolies that canonized the saying. And though Aspen does take it’s skiing seriously, its après ski and gourmet on-mountain dining is taken just as seriously, albeit with a side of sass and authenticity. And no alpine restaurant in the Colorado Rockies has garnered as much recent buzz and media attention as Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro at Aspen Highlands. On any given afternoon during Aspen’s ski season, this Europeaninspired outpost—perched atop Aspen Highlands at 10,825 feet—is packed with Strafe-clad locals, Bogner-wearing tourists, handsome ski instructors, dressed-to-the-nines ski bunnies, and perhaps a celebrity or two (last season, Seal danced with the crowd while singing along

to his famous tune, “Crazy”). The lunch scene (if wanting to join the rowdier set, book the 2 p.m. seating) most likely begins with a champagne toast. Diners nosh on guilt-free raclette and fondue post Highland Bowl hike, considered an adrenaline-infused Aspen rite of passage. As first rounds are served and conversation level rises, so does the music. On most days, prior to entrées even making it to the tables, one or two anxious revelers lead the pack, dancing on their chair in ski boots to get the party started. Next, the music turns up another notch. More table top dancers. And before too long, copious amounts of Veuve Clicquot are either being guzzled or sprayed on neighboring tables. Dance-offs are welcome. Yes, it’s decadent. In fact, Cloud Nine has become the number-one seller of Veuve Clicquot champagne in North America. Yet ask most any Aspen local how many times they’ve taken visiting friends for the first time and the response is more often than not, “That was one of the best days of my life!”

Aspen Highland’s Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro stakes its claim as an elevated on-mountain eating experience. Champagne required. BY ERIN LENTZ
Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro is steeped in history, and if its recently renovated—the restaurant saw a $1.1 Million face lift last season— walls could talk, stories are a plenty. During the 1970s, the famous Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol, including today’s Patrol Director Mac Smith, used to throw massive après ski soirees, during which several patrolmen would ski-jump the length of the outdoor deck. “It’s special because it celebrates the sport of skiing,” says Director of Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol Mac Smith. “Highlands isn’t for mere mortals. It’s for people that are passionate. When someone skis here, and then whether it’s lunch or aprés, they take that passion for what they’re doing to the same level.” Yet perhaps the restaurant’s longevity and magic lies with a common playing field: Whether a Texas oil tycoon, a reserved CEO, a curious 20-something, or an older gent looking to revisit his old stomping grounds, this rare on-mountain experience seems to celebrate the inner reveler within us all. And the underlying euphoria is typically a celebration of an epic powder day, a birthday, or an anniversary. Put simply, Cloud Nine fuses a potent mix of breaking bread with an unlikely cast of characters while glimpsing one of the most scenic views one can find. As a result, the experience is unlike any other. Bridging a storied past with a subtly modernized present, the renovation features expanded indoor seating, a larger deck with Instagram-envy views, and a curated collection of blackand-white vintage photos courtesy of the Aspen Historical Society. And in addition to the infamous lunch scene, “Snowcat Dinners” are held on Wednesday and Thursday nights throughout the season. Reservations often book 30 days in advance, so plan accordingly. No matter when you choose to go, the saying on the server’s shirts may sum it up best: “Ski In, Dance Out.”—aspensnowmass.com

On the Rhone Trail … The lesser-known Rhone Valley has quickly become an oenophile’s delight, claiming both high-end collectors and down-to-earth wine aficionados. BY TED LOOS
The beauty of the Rhone valley— both the place itself and its wines— can stop people in their tracks. Rolling, rocky, picturesque, and verdant, with ancient stone churches anchoring hilltop towns, the landscape is as riveting as the wine that has made the area famous. Located in warm and welcoming Southern France, between Burgundy and the Cote d’Azur, the Rhone is one of the country’s storied wine regions, sought-after by high-end collectors and casual Cotes-du-Rhone sippers but perhaps less famous internationally than Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. However, that’s all quickly changing. “In the last 10 years, the Rhone wines have become more and more interesting,” says Michel Chapoutier, who runs Maison Chapoutier, one of the top producers. Critical raves by the likes of Robert Parker, in addition to auction records for the best wines, have boosted the profile of the area. As Chapoutier says, “All of that attention made us realize, little by little, that wines of the Rhone Valley were becoming increasingly fashionable.” That has, of course, added to the number of people who want to travel there. It’s a big region, stretching for more than 100 miles—long and skinny—so winding drives are par for the course. In the old days, there wasn’t much infrastructure for visitors, yet that too is shifting. “The beauty of the Rhone is that more people have opened a tasting room lately, and you can go and taste for free— they’ve maintained a family-style greeting, and they are happy to see you,” says Christophe Tassan, a Rhone native and wine director of the acclaimed San Francisco restaurant The Battery. The Rhone is predominantly a land of red wines

(the tiny appellation of Condrieu is a glorious exception, where all production is devoted to the white grape, Viognier). Syrah and Grenache rule the roost (though in French style, you’ll never see those words on the label), and the hot weather lends big, powerful wines. The region has a strong geographical division between north and south in terms of focus on grapes. “The dominance of Grenache in the south generally provides wines with fruitiness, a sense of warmth and richness, and subtle tannins, whereas the powerful Syrah grape in the north produces wines with more structure, spice, tannin, and distinct personalities,” says acclaimed winemaker Philippe Guigal of the legendary Northern Rhonebased producer E. Guigal, particularly known for their Cote-Rotie wines. His friendly rival Chapoutier has his own funny, distinct spin on the differences between north and south, an oft-debated topic among natives. “The choice is easy,” says Chapoutier, discussing the texture of the wines in both areas (and he produces from both halves). “If I want something more ‘round,’ I’ll go to the South. If I want something

more structured or ‘square,’ I’ll go to the North. If I want to buy a wine I’ll keep for 50 years, I’ll choose a Northern Rhone. If I want to buy a wine that I’ll drink 10 years from now, I will choose a Southern Rhone wine. The North is monogamy and the South is polygamy.” At this, he laughs, and his sense of humor underscores what makes the Rhone special—an earthy, rich, vibrant sensibility. Many travelers approach the Rhone by arriving in Paris and then journeying to Lyon (often on the super-fast TGV train), a city known as the seat of French gastronomy and packed with Michelin-starred restaurants. It’s a beautiful course to travel, especially if you’re food-focused, yet so is the bottom-up route, ideal for the lifestyle lover who wants to begin on the beaches of the Riviera or the Cote d’Azur and head north. Either way, you’ll soon discover that the Rhone is about the heart, not the head. “You don’t need lots of education to appreciate it,” says Tassan. “It shows its ease right away.” And these days, something effortless and beautiful has a mighty appealing ring to it.

conic South African revolutionary and humanitarian Nelson Mandela famously stated: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Come fall of next year, consider it done. South Africa, a diverse country rooted in history, pride and culture, will be home to its first-ever contemporary art museum, lending to the country’s fast-growing art movement. Slated to open in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town in September 2017, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a project of seismic proportions. The 102,000-square-foot cultural institution will be the largest museum to open on the entire continent since the 1890s. It’s also one of the most expensive—given its $38-million-dollar price tag—the country has seen. What makes the opening most significant is the domino effect the anticipated museum will have on the country’s contemporary art scene, which has gone largely undetected for decades. A song yet to be sung, MOCAA is expected to deliver a sensational performance that is deservedly bringing attention to the country’s underrated—yet progressive—contemporary art world, ultimately inspired by South

Creative Disruptor Considered the NASDAQ or Bloomberg of the art industry, Artnet is quickly evolving with the digital age. CEO Jacob Pabst divulges online art trends and explains how online auctions are expanding the global art world. BY ERIN LENTZ HOW HAS ARTNET AUCTIONS BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE DOWN THE ASTRONOMICAL TRANSACTION PRICES THAT HAVE BECOME THE INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR BRICK AND MORTAR AUCTIONS?
Our platform compared to other auction houses is almost completely hands off. At a traditional auction house, every artwork needs to be in the possession of the auction house. That means that the seller has to ship the piece to the auction house. There you have the first cost, the shipping cost. Then you have to insure the piece, and the auction houses need to store it. In addition, each piece is incorporated into catalogues, incurring further expense to print and ship. This is all before the pieces are exhibited at premium locations. We do not have most of these additional costs. With Artnet Auctions, the seller keeps the piece the whole time. We do insist on the highest quality condition reports and require professional images of the piece, but the cost FALL+WINTER 2016/17

is negligible. Once the piece is sold through Artnet, the piece goes directly to the buyer. Storage, insurance, catalogues, exhibition real estate, and additional shipping costs are all eliminated. WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF AN ONLINE AUCTION VERSUS THE TRADITIONAL ART AUCTION?
In addition to lowering costs, the other major advantage is speed. Artnet has always been a disruptor leading changes in the industry. With the Price Database we brought transparency to the market. Now we are bringing liquidity. The whole process of selling a work through Artnet Auctions takes roughly four weeks between the condition report and receiving payment. At the brick and mortar houses it takes roughly 4-5 months; even 7-8 months. There is also a distinct advantage in the amount of people the online auctions reach. Artnet is

the industry leader, attracting millions of visitors to the site every month. Because of these advantages we also do not have to accept exclusively blue chip pieces. In a way, the auctions market has become very boring. The traditional houses only accept works that they can 100-percent guarantee selling, otherwise they risk a loss. The model is very narrow. You see the same artists selling again and again, when there are so many other interesting, less conventional artists. It is really unfortunate that so many artists who are just as good are not getting the same attention. We still, of course, ensure quality work with top experts and only do secondary market transactions. (Emerging artists are not made for internet transactions yet.) But by streamlining everything, Artnet is able to feature really exciting artists. HOW HAS ARTNET HAS GARNERED ITS REPUTATION AS THE NASDAQ OF THE ART INDUSTRY?
Subscribers to the Price Database check their portfolio of artworks like they check their stocks—collectors, galleries and even the auction houses rely on it. It is the only comprehensive record of auction sales and covers decades. More than just cataloguing auction results, we provide Artnet Analytics. Tell us quickly what you are interested in, and the analytics tool will send you reports on trends and comparisons. You can look at groups of artists, categories, countries and even compare the art to other forms of investment. In this way I would say we are more like the Bloomberg of the art market. HOW IS ARTNET THE ORIGINAL ART MARKET DISRUPTOR—WHY IS
house and request a catalogue for the artist or work you were interested in. The database took this information and compiled a comprehensive, searchable record of all auction transactions. Galleries and auction houses did not like this at the time. At first there was resistance, but the market can really only grow if it is transparent. Making price information available to everyone empowered a lot of people in the art market. Before this, a buyer was dependent on what the dealer or their friends told them. Now people could go into a gallery and make an informed buying decision. One of the reasons the art market has grown so tremendously is because all of the people felt more comfortable buying. It was before my time, but Artnet played a big part in this. It gave buyers a very powerful tool with all of the information at their fingertips at any time. The more informed you are, the more you buy. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SALE VIA ARTNET AUCTIONS?
I think the most significant sale recently was an Andy Warhol, sold from a German collector to a U.S. collector. Artnet does private sales as well as the public online auctions. We have also sold several works by Kusama, Lichtenstein, and Matisse. One of the Kusama works, one of his star paintings, was a very unique piece with subtle colors that does not come up to the market frequently. The sellers had considered selling through traditional brick and mortar auction houses, but found these houses could not give the work the proper attention. I think we really understood how special the piece was.
TRANSPARENCY PARAMOUNT?
Artnet’s first product, the Price Database, was developed in 1989 by Hans Neuendorf. He turned the industry upside down by bringing transparency to the global market. Before this, there was no information easily available. After every fair, you would have to go to that specific auction

fter buying a controlling stake in a local fair, the world’s most prestigious collecting showcase, Art Basel, arrived in Hong Kong in 2013. Just three years later, the Asian outpost of this storied European firm was such a phenomenon that its entire ticket run of 70,000 sold out; the local tourism board has even dubbed March ‘art month’ in Basel’s honor. Veteran local consultant Alison Pickett, who works with the likes of Swire Hotels, says she’s seen “many art fairs come and go,” but the arrival of Art Basel Hong Kong (ABHK) has further transformed the city into a cultural hub. “Without the handicap of a previously existing or jaded high-profile art culture,” she adds, “Hong Kong has been very open to new experiences and opinions.” Yet it isn’t just curiosity that’s turbocharged the Hong Kong fair—there are smart commercial reasons for its overnight success, too. a free port where taxes are comparatively low: on purchases (sales tax is zero) and on incomes (up to 15 percent, versus as high as 45 percent in China). As such, Christie’s and Sotheby’s have booming showrooms here, while PRC-based auctioneers such as China Guardian and Poly have recently opened satellite spaces in Hong Kong to snag a share of this lucrative new market. Those same tax breaks, alongside Hong Kong’s curious, wealthy local collecting base has lured a slew of blue chip galleries to invest in sites here, too. Art fans can view the likes of Galerie Perrotin from Paris, London’s White Cube, and New York-based Lehmann Maupin. There are slight differences in the way such galleries operate here compared with other global cities, at least according to Nick Buckley-Wood. Tall and with the perfect diction of a British public schoolboy, the investment banker-turned-gallery director works for Labyrinths gallery. This is one of several spaces owned by Pearl Lam, a Hong
Kong native who was one of the country’s first major collectors; she now owns a string of spaces across the People’s Republic of China. “Hong Kongers love convenience, and everything here in Central is walking distance and you can get between buildings without going outside,” Buckley-Wood says on a sweltering summer afternoon from his whitewashed, air-conditioned hideaway. Labyrinths is located on the sixth floor of the Pedder Building in the Central district, one of several such gallery-clusters here. Others include the nearby 50 Connaught Road (home to both Perrotin and White Cube) and the brand new Soho 189 Art Lane complex in Sai Ying Pun (where Lam operates another gallery). Buckley-Wood points out other local quirks. Rather than seeking out edgy or pioneering locales, which he says is so common elsewhere, Hong Kong galleries sit in smaller spaces grouped together in the city center. faster and more often, usually re-hanging monthly, offering constant freshness. Other differences from New York or London are less tangible. “At the moment, all the art galleries are very collegial. It’s a smaller art world, so everyone knows each other, and we’re all friends, and invite each other to our gallery dinners.” The local government, of course, is keen to transform such small beginnings into a globally ranked art scene, and, as such, is investing heavily to achieve that goal. It oversaw the conversion of the former Central Police Station, for example, into an arts and historic complex, named Tai Kwun and conceived by starchitects Herzog & de Meuron. Likewise, it encouraged New York’s Asia Society, largely funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, to open its new outpost here, in the Admiralty area. There’s no greater sign of Hong Kong’s rising arts profile, though, than the West Kowloon Cultural District, a sprawling, new mixed-use development that will occupy almost 100 acres of prime land on Kowloon’s waterfront.
When this vast urban renewal project opens in 2020, replete with its own, direct train link to China, it will be home to nearly 20 separate institutions, from a Cantonese opera house to Tate Modern-esque art museums. The highest profile tenant, though, is undoubtedly M+, the quirkily named contemporary art museum. Swiss collector Uli Sigg has already deeded his collection of more than 1,500 Chinese contemporary works to the museum’s permanent holdings. Erstwhile, MoMA NY staffer Doryun Chong is chief curator of this enormous museum. “Hong Kong is in the midst of redefining its place vis-à-vis mainland China,” he notes of his adoptive city which he dubs “intimately cosmopolitan.” Chong has high hopes for the city-state’s future. “Hong Kong is a place of commerce and an enterprising spirit, but the city lacked infrastructure and institutions that were international. Despite all that success, Rouda had that gnawing feeling of a dream unfulfilled: She wanted to be a writer. So when the family—including four children—settled into their dream home in Malibu, Rouda turned her focus to writing full time. She had penned a series of non-fiction books centering on entrepreneurial women finding their “real you.”
Rouda’s Laguna Series were such mega-hits on Amazon, the juggernaut publisher asked the author to license the concept for their fan-fiction site, AmazonWorld. She wrote four short stories to get the World up and running, and readers have since posted six of their own stories taking place in that Laguna “world.” Recently, Amazon asked Rouda to create another women’s romance “world,” called Hope Falls. The first, One Night in Tahoe, was inspired by one of Rouda’s ER trips to North Star, when they were snowed in by a 22-inch storm. More are set to come as Rouda finds inspiration in all that surrounds her. “I try to live in the moment and purposefully disconnect, especially when we’re on vacation, but something that happens in life can be a jumping

After unexpected runaway success with those books, “it was just me in that house and it was time to take my own advice,” she says. An incurable romantic, Rouda self-published her first novel, Here, Home, Hope, in May 2011, a story about a woman in crisis thinking about who she wanted to be. “I had always dreamed of living on the beach and finally I could. So it was a fun book to write,” she says. All the Difference, In the Mirror, and The Goodbye Year came swiftly on the heels of her debut novel. When the family relocated to Laguna Beach, she turned to women’s romance.

A great meal, a glorious sunset—they can reappear in story form, bringing to life for others what goes on in Rouda’s rich interior world. “There is magic to certain places,” she says. “And that magic may sometimes become a character in my books.”—kairarouda.com
If you ask best-selling author Kaira Rouda for one word to describe her adopted town of Laguna Beach, it’s “romantic.” “Some of the sunsets from the Montage Resort are the best in the world,” she says. But you can also find a small-town charm along with some urbane diversions. Here, the romance writer shares a local’s guide to hometown hotspots. BEACH. Main Beach is your introduction to Laguna Beach and how special it is. You drive through a canyon road and when you hit Laguna, you go through this beautiful town and then there is the ocean, right there. The town developers were so smart to preserve the coastline of this charming beach town. SHOP. This tiny boutique, Red Fox, is across from the Surf and Sand hotel and set in a little cottage. The guy that owns it is so friendly. All the great clothes he has squished into this tiny place—it’s magical. SNACK. Active Culture is a place for healthy foods. They have yogurt bowls I am addicted to. DINE. Zinc Café is a must for lunch. Their salads are great. If there is a line, go to the takeout side and get a plate from the smorgasbord of salads and find a sunny spot to eat. WELLNESS. There is a great meditation studio called Om. I try to go to meditation at least once per week. My Pilates studio is right next to it. COCKTAILS. There are a lot of cute bars in town, but Marine Room is the cool local place— the vibe of Laguna Beach. CURATED

Case Study CEO of the Case Foundation and Chairman of the National Geographic Society Board of Trustees, Jean Case reveals the power of philanthropy, travel, and failing forward. BY ERIN LENTZ
P
hilanthropist. CEO. Investor. Mom. Leader. Disruptor. Jean Case wears many hats. And these are just a few. The CEO of the Case Foundation—established in 1997 with husband Steve Case, AOL.com co-founder and Exclusive Resorts majority owner—Jean has been a pioneer in the world of digital technology. Prior to her tenure at the Case Foundation she was a tech exec in the private sector, helping establish AOL as a household name. Today—let’s call it Jean Case 2.0—philanthropy and travel take top billing among her prescient vision. Jean is Chairman of the National Geographic Society Board of Trustees and also serves on the boards of Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC2), the White House Historical Association, and BrainScope Company, Inc., among several other philanthropic endeavors. Jean and Steve also joined The Giving Pledge, created by Melinda and Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010. They publicly reaffirmed a commitment to donate the majority of their wealth to support charitable causes. So just what drives this powerful thinker and provider? Being fearless, when faced directly with fear or failure, has been a game changer.
WHAT WAS YOUR “A-HA” MOMENT IN CREATING THE POWERFUL BE FEARLESS CAMPAIGN.
When we launched our Be Fearless campaign in 2012, the Case Foundation had just turned 15. We decided to use this important milestone to stop, look around, and look back to ask some big questions. We recognized that despite investments of considerable time and money by many talented and committed individuals over the centuries, many serious issues were still 74

dogging our planet and our communities. And yet, there were some bright spots—areas of transformational breakthroughs. So we decided to “go to school” on these to better understand whether there were underlying principles or a “secret sauce” that these effective efforts shared. We tapped a firm to do the research and what we discovered was quite illuminating: in every case where significant progress had taken place, five principles were at work. These principles, when taken together, could be summarized under the phrase, “Be Fearless” and thus we set out to share these principles with our sector under this title. YOUR TERM “FAIL FORWARD” IS BRILLIANT. CAN YOU EXPAND ON THIS CONCEPT?
When I think of this term, I am reminded of two great quotes from two brilliant innovators. It was Albert Einstein who once said, “Failure is success in progress,” and it was Thomas Edison who said, “I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 things that won’t work.” So the fail forward term really calls on innovators and changemakers to recognize that most breakthroughs come from taking risks, and if you are going to take risks, you likely will fail along the way. But rather than give up, walk away, or feel shamed by it, it’s important to learn from the failure and apply it in future efforts, and when possible, let others learn lessons from your failure. If we all embraced Einstein’s definition that failure brings us that much closer to success, we might be more willing to dig deep, pick up, and embrace the lessons of failure as a powerful tool in future efforts. My own moment of truth with failure came years ago at the Case Foundation when it
became clear that a very high profile initiative we were taking forward was not working. It was a clean water initiative in hundreds of communities across sub-Saharan Africa and we had a decision to make - would we own up to the failure, or try to quietly exit and “sweep it under the rug” with the hope that maybe it wouldn’t be discovered, or would we come clean and own up to our failure? I decided to own up to it and wrote a piece entitled “The Painful Acknowledgement of Coming Up Short.” In the piece I highlighted what lessons were taken from this failed initiative, and what followed really surprised us. Colleagues in the philanthropy and nonprofit sector began reaching out and thanking me for the transparency we brought to the issue. It became clear there was truly a thirst within our sector to learn from each other and to own up to the fact that if we are out there on the edge facing really tough challenges, we likely will experience some failures along the way. To encourage others in our sector to acknowledge and share failures that we can all learn from, we began hosting “fail fests”—often cocktail hour gatherings in which people were encouraged to share lessons learned from those things that didn’t work. Fast forward the tape, and today we are heartened to see the sharing of failures as a much more common activity in our sector. HOW DOES INCLUSIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR MINORITY ENTREPRENEURS, AND IN TURN, CREATE STRONGER COMMUNITIES?
There is a saying that goes something like this: “Talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not.” Inclusive entrepreneurship calls more
women and people of color, along with geographically and economically diverse entrepreneurs, to the table. For too long, solutions for underserved communities and broader challenges that dog our society have been drawn up under fluorescent lights and often by those who haven’t lived the problem firsthand. We’ve seen some great examples of impact companies that benefit from the unique perspective of their inclusive founders. Revolution Foods, a company founded by two moms who wanted to see healthy food choices in public schools, created a company to do just that. Today, Revolution Foods has served more than 200 million fresh, healthy “chef crafted, kid-inspired meals.” Or a brand new startup founded by Marco Montes, a first generation Mexican American who is building an app that can help a relative receive support from loved ones in the U.S. by enabling direct payment of electric bills, or mobile phone bills or other monthly bills. You probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it was Marco’s own experience of trying to pay bills for his grandmother in Mexico that made him think, “There must be a better way,” and so he built one. At the Case Foundation we believe in leveling the playing field for all entrepreneurs, in all places, in order to create stronger communities, close the opportunity gap, and scale creative solutions to persistent problems. We have learned a lot through our partnership with Forward Cities, a national learning collaborative aimed at identifying the secret sauce of driving inclusive innovation in cities. And groups like Village Capital, JumpStart, and PowerMoves who are intentionally focused on sourcing, networking and securing funding for diverse entrepreneurs. The challenge and the opportunity are real. Today about five percent of venture capital (VC) backed companies have a woman CEO and less than one percent of VC backed companies have an African American founder. By increasing diversity and inclusion for all forms of entrepreneurship and unlocking more flow of social capital, financial capital, and knowledge, we can cultivate more women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds. As the data makes clear, we are a nation defined by the entrepreneurial spirit. We strongly believe it’s time to invite the 50 percent of our population who haven’t had the opportunities to participate in building new, exciting companies on to the field, and we are excited by the new innovations they will introduce. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST TAKE AWAY IN YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE GIVING PLEDGE?
In 2010, my husband Steve and I joined the Giving Pledge, started by Melinda and Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, and publicly reaffirmed our commitment to give away the majority of our wealth to fund worthy charitable causes. We had been clear about our intentions before the Giving Pledge, but we saw the opportunity to learn and grow together by joining this remarkable group of generous families and individuals. But to be
clear, we have always said that philanthropy should not be defined as rich people writing big checks. We’ve championed the democratization of philanthropy, recognizing that we can all be philanthropists, whether making a small or large donation or giving your time and talent to a worthy cause. AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
For 128 years, the men and women of the National Geographic Society have believed in the power of science, exploration, education, and storytelling to inspire people to care about our planet. It’s my view that there has never been a more urgent time for us to understand how the world works and our place in it. I am grateful to the National Geographic Explorers who routinely go to the front lines of the unknown to uncover our world, or share its beauty or risk of peril. Equally important are the talented men and women who take the stories, the photographs, the videos and send them out to the world—their work has helped make National Geographic the number-one global brand in social media with content that reaches hundreds of millions of people across the planet. YOU AND STEVE ARE AVID TRAVELERS, HAVING GONE ON A RECENT, “UNPLUGGED” AIRSTREAM TRIP. HOW HAS TRAVEL EXPANDED THE HORIZONS OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?
We have truly enjoyed spending precious family time in Exclusive Resorts properties around the world. Traveling with five young children was what first led us to our interest in Exclusive Resorts, and now that those children are all adults, we get to enjoy new kinds of experiences with them in ER properties. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AND ER HAVE HAD AN IMPACTFUL PARTNERSHIP. HOW IS TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE IMPORTANT TO SUCCESS, BOTH IN BUSINESS AND IN FAMILY?
Travel and education have ignited my curiosity and made the world come alive for my family and for me. It gives us the opportunity to unwind and recharge from busy lives. The experiences we’ve gathered through our travel with National Geographic and Exclusive Resorts, and across the globe through our work at the Case Foundation, has exposed us to new regions and fascinating cultures. We’ve been able to observe customs, and traditions, similarities and differences. We’ve become more aware of both the challenges and opportunities people and communities around the world face. We are our best selves when we explore, learn from others, and take what we’ve gleaned back home in our professional and personal lives.
Island Hopping A frequent visitor to Hawaii, Jean Case lists her aloha hot spots. STAY We love the serenity of the many ER properties, but we’ve especially enjoyed time with our family in the ER units on Maui and on the Big Island.
EAT MERRRIMANS. Led by Chef Peter Merrriman, his farm-fresh fare embodies the aloha spirit. KUA AINA. Located on the North Shore of Oahu, it’s our family favorite. Burger selections include Maui onions and fresh avocado. LEONARD’S BAKERY. Found on the Big Island, it has world famous “Malasadas”—a mouthwatering Portuguese doughnut synonymous with Hawaii. MATSUMOTO. Another local favorite that has sold shaved ice in Haleiwa for nearly 65 years. MW RESTAURANT. Headed by Alan Wade Ueoka and Michelle Karr-Ueoka, this Honolulu restaurant serves some of the very best fare you can find in Hawaii.
PLAY We love to get out on the water, whether boating, sailing or familyfriendly surfing lessons. ZIP LINING AND HELICOPTER TOURS offer a bird’s-eye view of the most spectacular land, waterfalls, and ocean shoreline you’ll find almost anywhere. ATV tours at Poipu on Kauai are adventurous and a great way to see the backcountry. WONDERFUL HIKES. The most adventurous being the Nepali Coast on Kauai.

SKI WITH HEIDI VOEKLER Three-time Olympic skier, Heidi Voelker, has been Deer Valley’s Ambassador of Skiing since 1997. It’s easy to spot her smooth-as-butter style on the slopes, whether she’s flying solo or accompanying guests around the resort. “Deer Valley has the stigma of being small,” she says. “But you can’t get to all of the good stuff in a day.” Each of the six mountains has its own personality. Heidi says family-designated Flagstaff Mountain can even challenge high-level skiers. “Right off the Northside Express lift you have seven wide-open, groomed runs that offer what I call ‘ego snow’,” she says. “It makes anyone feel good.” Ambitious skiers can test their skills on Know You Don’t, site of the 2002 Olympic slalom event. “There’s a myth that Deer Valley doesn’t have any steeps and this run is one of the steepest women’s slalom courses,” she says. Heidi says the length and terrain of Big Stick, a run off the top of Carpenter Express on Bald Eagle Mountain, brings back memories of her giant slalom World Cup races. On a sold out day, take Carpenter Express over to Little Baldy
Peak. “This newer part of the mountain is kind of hidden,” says Heidi, who likes to lap Jordanelle, a mile-and-a-half long run down the mountain’s ridge. On the far east side, Bald Mountain offers longer, steeper groomed runs. “Triangle Trees is my secret stash over there and Mayflower Bowl takes forever to reach but is where I head first on a pow day.” To the west, Empire Mountain, has 10 chutes just under 10,000 feet. “Chute 4 is called Challenger, and with all of my experience, I still need to collect myself and make sure I’m on my game to ski it.” The newest part of the mountain, Lady Morgan is crisscrossed with blacks and double blacks. “What’s nice about Deer Valley is that there is always a green or blue run off the top,” she says. “And there’s always an easy way to get to lunch without much traversing.” Her go-to spot is the mid-mountain Royal Street Café at Silver Lake Loge. “They don’t even ask my order,” she says. “I always get the crab tower, softshell tuna tacos, an ice cream sandwich, and, depending on the day, a glass of white wine.”—deervalley.com

It’s so good, in fact, that members of the Norwegian Olympic Nordic Team train here each season. jackson Hole, WY NATIONAL ELK REFUGE SLEIGH RIDES Jackson Hole has two main winter attractions: the majestic Tetons and the famous Jackson Elk Herd. As the cold weather settles in, the elk migrate down from the high country to the valley floor to make their winter home on the 25,000-acre National Elk Refuge. When the refuge was first established in 1912, homesteaders would feed the elk via horse drawn sleighs. People would ask to tag along to get a better look at the herd; by 1965 the refuge contracted out its first sleigh rides for wildlife viewing. Today, the herd numbers nearly 7,000 elk and the sleigh rides are the area’s most popular winter activity. It’s best to reserve tickets in advance and bundle up, as the hour-long rides can get chilly. t is only 9 a.m. but the cloudless day has already surrendered to welcomed heat as I pad my way along the powdery Atlantic shoreline. The sand—chalky and fine like warm flour—tingles my feet, urging me into a brisk walk toward the water. Splashing into the ocean, I wade deeper and deeper before I turn around to face the magnificent structure behind me. The Sea Island Beach Club, The Cloister’s iconic Mediterranean landmark, seems to shine in the early morning sun, its Spanish tiles glowing a fiery red and its slender archways casting deep dark shadows on the halls behind them. This particular morning, the hotel is abuzz with activity. Exclusive Resorts Members Pat and Bob Henry—and their clan of 14 that spans three generations—is already holding court by the swimming pool, with the children whizzing down the waterslide and the adults soaking up some muchneeded R&R. The Henrys arrived only yesterday from their respective homes in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida, but, judging from the ease with which they have fallen into their holiday routine, it is clear that this annual family reunion offers some much-needed refreshment. According to Pat Henry—the family matriarch who, along with her husband Bob, and the couple’s three children and six grandchildren aged 4 to 15, reserve two Exclusive Resorts Sea Island homes for one week every summer—the trip is a treat that the Henrys look forward to year after year. “Sea Island is our favorite family vacation because it’s just perfect for all ages,” she says. “Every year we ask the kids if they want to go someplace else, but they always want to come right back here. It’s just wonderful for our big family.”

The Henry clan falls into a long line of families that have visited Sea Island since its debut nearly a century ago. Soon after the hotel opened in 1928, a Christmas visit by Calvin Coolidge garnered the property accolades as America’s most elite retreat. Gazing past the Henry family toward The Cloister, I picture the palm trees that welcomed Coolidge and his wife to the refined resort. I envision him zipping away in Howard Coffin’s stately yacht with his beloved chow, Tiny Tim, to explore neighboring St. Simons Island. Of course, Coolidge was only the first of many prominent figures to fall for Sea Island. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who visited after the end of World War II, may have swum along the exact same stretch of ocean I am floating in now. Despite Sea Island’s illustrious past, however, the 88-year-old resort maintains a laidback and utterly unpretentious air. Purchased in 2016 by Denver’s Anschutz family—another clan of regular visitors— the five-mile-long isle, with its massive arched oak trees and perfectly manicured lawns, possesses the sort of ease and authenticity that comes only from decades of distinction. This understated provenance is exactly what brought the Exclusive Resorts executive team to the island nearly a decade ago. Blending heritage and honor, adventure and leisure, exclusivity and elegance, Sea Island embodies the vital spirit of the quintessential Exclusive Resorts family holiday.
A Flagship is Born Though Coolidge and Eisenhower weren’t quite lucky enough to experience the Sea Island of today, it’s clear that the statesmen’s values—family and sportsmanship among them—remain at the property’s core. Nowhere are these values more obvious than at Exclusive Resorts’ development, located just north of The Cloister. Nestled behind majestic oak trees in two secluded cul-de-sacs, the 24 residences form a charming enclave—and one of the only private communities behind Sea Island’s gates— where guests can find peace, quiet, and a true sense of community. It’s no wonder the flagship remains a

perennial favorite among Members and their families since joining the Club’s portfolio in 2009. “We really wanted to capture what Sea Island is all about,” says Exclusive Resorts’ CEO Cathy Ross, who spearheaded the two-year, approximately $60 million development of the Club’s private Sea Island community. “It’s the definition of Southern charm, and it’s all about family. We wanted this to be a place our Members would return to generation after generation.” To bring this vision to life—and tap into Sea Island’s historic Southern style—Ross turned to Exclusive Resorts’ then Vice President of Architecture and Design, David Oswold. In turn, Oswold looked to The Cloister for inspiration. The famed hotel, originally designed by legendary architect Addison Mizner in the late 1920s, had been demolished only a few years prior and reinstated with a new building bearing the same SpanishMediterranean style. “Sea Island did an amazingly beautiful job, because they weren’t trying to copy the original,” says Oswold. “They continued the Cloister’s tradition in terms of style but they were honest about it and gave it something new and fresh and relevant for today. That was a benchmark that we wanted to maintain in designing our residences.” At 3,700-square-feet, these homes are indeed a convergence of history and modernity, blending traditional elements such as rough-hewn wood beams, Spanish-Mediterranean roof tiles, and wrought-iron staircases with more contemporary concepts like gas fireplaces, private plunge pools, screened-in porches, oversized windows, and family-friendly floor plans. Interiors are also reminiscent of Sea Island’s values: All materials and furnishings are American made. Perhaps most significant, Oswold’s plan for the homes ensured that families would enjoy a good mix of public and personal areas, with private zones—two master suites and two additional bedrooms—radiating off a grand central space with
20-foot ceilings. For Ross, the open-air kitchen and expansive living areas including the screened-in porch with a summer kitchen are indeed the heart of the homes. “We designed these spaces knowing Sea Island is a resort packed with family activities,” she explains. “The question was, ‘how do you come back after a long day outdoors and get everyone together?’ These larger spaces flow together so there is plenty of room for families to gather for meals and game nights.” Ensuring everything runs smoothly at Exclusive Resorts’ Sea Island community are Macy Barrett and John Tate. Both have been with the property for eight years each, and they are devoted to keeping Members fed, entertained, and blissfully looked after, catering each trip to what will create the most memorable experiences for families. They have even helped arrange special moments such as proposals and weddings. “One couple, the Johnsons, were engaged and subsequently married at Sea Island,” Tate recalls. “They now have two young children, so there is yet another generation of Johnsons that we look forward to seeing every time they come.” Tate and Barrett have been equally integral in orchestrating the Henry family’s annual stays, arranging everything from rounds of golf and visits to the spa to special chef-prepared dinners in their cottage.
Lowcountry, High Spirits “I don’t actually like seafood,” Pat tells me over cocktails in her cottage. The Henry residence is teeming with activity this evening: Granddaughters taking selfies, sons recapping their morning on the golf course, grandsons lacing up their sneakers for a pre-dinner bike ride around the neighborhood. But it’s the aromatic stew in the kitchen, tended by a team of Sea Island’s private chefs and stewards that has prompted Pat’s culinary confession. Still,

the lowcountry boil—a Southern delicacy comprised of shrimp, clams, potatoes, and corn all prepared in one big, steaming pot—has brought the entire Henry clan together after a day of activities on the island. And for that, Pat is more than happy to dine on a bit of seafood. Whether for seafood or not, it seems inevitable the Henrys would be famished this evening. The day had started in earnest with the men on the green and the women at the spa. The former was a sweltering affair with temperatures climbing fast by 9 a.m.; the latter was a mellow moment of peace for mothers and daughters alike. By noon it was off to the horse stables for a family ride on the beach, followed by fishing on the dock in the shadows of The Cloister. The catches were small—nothing more than a pound or two—but ice cream sandwiches and plenty of shade proved reason enough to cast line after line. Now, just before sunset, the first signs of sunburn are beginning to show, and it is clear that the parents and grandparents are pleased to gather around the living room with drinks in hand. “They take such great care of us, and they are so good with the kids,” says Jennifer Henry, Pat and Bob’s daughter-in-law, nodding toward the kitchen where Chef Santoria Axson has recruited several of the children to help prepare the family feast. Donning junior chef ’s caps, they mix coleslaw, spear vegetables, and chatter with their newfound culinary hero. It’s a charming end to a long day—one that will surely be repeated tomorrow with skeet shooting, swimming, and a s’mores bonfire at The Lodge. And though I’m tempted to accept Pat’s invitation to join the family for a genuine Southern spread, I have evening plans of my own.
The Finer Things For all of its down-home country allure, Sea Island has a refined side too—and I’m about to explore it for myself. After changing out of my shorts and T-shirt, I head first to The Georgian Room Lounge, a sultry little bar tucked behind a gold satin curtain just off The Cloister lobby. Dark wood paneling and burgundy capitonné benches lend a slightly speakeasy-style vibe. The cocktail list, however, is far more imaginative than any Prohibition pub would offer. I order the Tiki Time—house-made vanilla vodka, punch, and pineapple juice served in a copper pineapple-shaped goblet—and settle onto a bar stool. 96

But it’s quickly bottoms up as my 8:30 dinner reservation calls. Tonight, Macy has booked me the chef ’s table, a special treat (enjoyed frequently by ER Members) beyond the usual extravagances of The Georgian Room, the only Forbes Five-Star restaurant in Georgia. For a second, I feel like a celebrity bypassing the velvet ropes of a Hollywood premiere as the maître d’ walks me past the restaurant’s candlelit tables and through the double swinging doors that lead to the kitchen. Once inside, I score a small table in the middle of it all—a front-row seat to the action of the night. I quickly spot Sea Island’s Chef de Cuisine Julian Schiebel—a young culinary prodigy who hails from Germany—carefully laying delicate gold foil over his signature chocolate dessert. My mouth instantly begins to water. Course after course soon arrives. There’s the seared diver scallop topped with caviar; the Wagyu beef tenderloin soaked in sweet port; and the divine dairy cart from which I suppress the urge to sample each and every cheese. At last, the chocolate dessert comes, and with it, Schiebel, who regales me with tales of his fabled kitchen. It’s a surprise that someone so young would helm a restaurant so established, yet Schiebel says this is all part of the Sea Island ethos. “There is a real progressive approach here,” he explains. “It’s not about doing things the way they’ve always been done at Sea Island. It’s about taking that foundation and building something new with it.” At the end of my six-course meal, I am fully stuffed and utterly satisfied—yet I ponder a nightcap. I have no doubt that Coolidge almost certainly ended their nights in such a manner, but alas, I decide I am not quite stately enough to manage anymore turpitude for tonight. Instead, I slowly make my way back to my cottage, winding past the slender palms and iconic structures that seem to be on every Sea Island postcard from both the past and present. Passing by the Henry family’s home, I hear the party is still going strong, with the sounds of children splashing in the pool and joyful chatter drifting through the night. Indeed, I realize Sea Island, both old and new, is, more than anything, home.

othing screams vacation quite like the beach. If you’re fortunate enough to live near one, the scent of the ocean—a daily mini-reboot— beckons with each new dawn. If packing for a sun-and-sand sojourn, the common essentials stir a youthful familiarity: coconut sunscreen, a floppy hat. Flip-flops. There’s something about the ocean— perhaps its innate ability to stir emotion, whether gentling away heartache or teasing surfers with a look-at-me-now monster swell—that ignites a passionate connection to both nature and to each other. And the sea, in all its sensual demands, is just damn pretty. Especially to “it” photographer Gray Malin. The 30-year-old artist, who 10 years ago was peddling prints in L.A. and now internationally acclaimed for his unique aerial perspective, recently released “Beaches”—an ode, in some ways, to the inner child in all of us. The brilliant collection celebrates seaside play, often with a wondrous wallop of color. A helicopter on a Gray Malin shoot is most likely mandatory, with the artist often harnessed to the chopper, flying at daunting speeds in order to nail the shot. “Every beach has it’s own unique qualities but overall, I believe ‘the beach’ is universal, whether a rocky beach in Italy or the white sands of St. Barths,” says Malin. “The one thing that is constant is that the beach makes everyone feel relaxed and happy.” So go ahead, daydream of sinking those toes in the sand. Of salt on the skin. Turquoise eye candy. In the following pages, Malin reveals a firsthand account of “Beaches” inspiration. The coast is calling. You’re welcome.

nywhere you go in the world, if you have the right perspective, you will find something you like,” says author and geologist Wayne Ranney. It’s dawn, and day three of Exclusive Resorts’ Grand Canyon Experience. A hazy orange hue settles over The Rim, which towers nearly 3,500 feet above us. The scent of huevos rancheros, cooked by our Colorado River + Trail Expeditions river guides (and surprisingly skilled chefs), lingers, while nearby sagebrush demands attention, too. Our band of nearly 30 river runners—a group that within just 72 hours has become closely bonded—is huddled around a map, our new morning ritual. We’re leaving our second campsite, Lava Chuar Canyon, at river mile 66, after having slept under the stars the previous eve. We’re about to embark from a locale that most of us will never return to in this lifetime, but one that has forever etched individual memories of nature staging one of her most brilliant shows—shooting stars, the swoosh of flying bats, and a sunrise that seemingly suspends time. In a nutshell, we’re being reminded that Mother Nature is indeed in charge, considering we’re standing on, and about to raft through, rock that is a billion years old. Ranney, who’s run the Grand 85 times, begins each morning, post group “duffle shuffle”—preperation for the two power boats that snake the day’s whitewater run—with such aforementioned words of wisdom, in addition to an expert preview of the day’s anticipated geological wonders. By now, we’ve found our river rhythm. Our group has settled in with each other—a mix of curious Type A travelers, for the most part, including families from LA, Mexico, San Francisco, the East Coast, and several kids, mostly early teens. We’re bankers, lawyers, photographers, film producers, entrepreneurs, architects, housewives, and more. Yet, here, the Grand imposes a level playing field, a commonality defined by the rush of the Colorado River, the respectful demands of group camping, and by the anticipated adrenaline-boost found
with every raging rapid. Here, we’re all just merely passersby. And most all come to acknowledge this, even if stubbornly, throughout the week’s adventure. The ladies have come to terms with “The Groover” (the “outdoor adventure toilet,” coined with a wink by our guides). We’re forced to truly unplug—no constant text or email pings or videos games for the kids can interrupt us from living in the moment. In just two days we’ve run several famous rapids. We’ve bumped, screamed, and marveled through nine layers of rock, some of which, as Ranney explains, is 1.75 billion years old. Given such staggering statistics, this stark, soothing, and, at times, uncomfortable environment is a whopping reminder of our place on the planet. The Grand Canyon does that to you. And if you’re lucky, as we come to find out, a few of its secrets will be experienced along this 187-river-mile journey. On this particular day we’re traveling to river mile 110. We’ll cross a fault that made the canyon 1,000 feet deeper at that particular spot. We’re traversing into the heart of the canyon, so far into this thick, wild artery that The Rim will no longer be visible from our floating headquarters. The day prior we ran Georgie’s Rapid, a big, wallop of a wave that’s just a tease of what’s to come as far as huge whitewater. “Georgie,” we learn, from our guide, Ben, is a Canyon legend, the first woman canyon runner to operate a commercial enterprise, and a rowdy roughand-tumble daredevil with a penchant for young male guides who could be spied gunning the river in a leopard print one-piece. As the week unfolds, our guides—John, Ben, and McKenna—recount other Canyon legends as we navigate a river steeped in discovery and surprise. Exclusive Resorts Members of 11 years, the Mexico City-based Rodriguez family—Alvaro, Marcela Cortina, and twin 14-year-old sons Mateo and Lucas—have, prior to this trip, only experienced the Grand Canyon from above, while traveling on one of the

Club’s Airstream Adventures. Having booked this Grand Canyon river trip a year prior, they’ve been anxiously awaiting discovering the Grand’s “heart,” as Lucas so poignantly explains. “From up top you can only see the heart of the Canyon,” he says. “From down here, you can see basically everything—all the elements, all the layers of rock.” Alvaro, an venture capitalist, and Marcela, an acclaimed architect, have been traveling with the boys since they were little. “Alvaro and I talked about the fact that we wanted to give them education and experiences, and that’s what we’ve tried to do for the past 14 years,” Marcela explains at one of our lunch sites, post group yoga session. The excitement from this family of four is palpable, and though certainly they arrived a close-knit clan, throughout the week their respect for each other, their willingness to always contribute to the group, and the boys’ bonding with other children, is a blessing to behold. Alvaro explains, “Putting a group together is one of the things that ER does really well. Our

first experience like this was in the Galapagos a few years ago. The fact that you’re able to go on these trips with travel companions that you have something in common with, you go with a group of people that are great to be with.” As the week unfolds, and we travel deeper into the heart of the Canyon, the Rodriguez family discovers a trip defined by education, memories-in-the-making, and ultimately, as easily witnessed, a family bond further carved by the mesmerizing slot canyons, nerve-rattling whitewater, and serene starscapes— all gifts of the Grand. “You can think of trips like this as an adventure, as a family experience, as an experience of beauty, of the environment,” adds Alvaro. “But you seldom think of a trip like this as an educational experience. With Wayne, it’s become a learning experience, an education. I know a thousand times more than I knew just a week ago about geology. Same for the kids.” Herewith, the Rodriguez family recounts some of their—and the group’s—most precious memories and adventures.

Rock Star Author and geologist Wayne Ranney lists his Top 5 Grand Canyon stats and facts. “No two miles are the same,” explains Ranney during our trip. And in his book, Carving Grand Canyon: Evidence, Theories, and Mystery, Ranney writes, “to explain the canyon is to tell a story that reaches back to times before today’s continents existed, that narrates the ascent and decline of geologic empires, each rising on the eroded ruins of its predecessor.” Here, Ranney lists several wonders of this surreal landscape. 1. Length of Colorado River within Grand Canyon: 277 miles 2. Volume of rock eroded: 1,000 cubic miles 3. Elevation of Grand Canyon: North Rim averages 8,200 feet; South Rim averages 7,000 feet 4. Annual Visitation: 4.5 million 5. Rock Age: Some of the rock formations in the Canon are 1.75 billion years old. Ranney worked as a backcountry ranger at the bottom of the Grand Canyon from 1975-1978. He’s since run the Canyon 85 times.
Local Legends With names like Georgie’s, Bass, and Hermit, each rapid along the Grand spins tall tales. CRATE guides will unveil history in the making while you spill and thrill over these famous falls. GEORGIE’S RAPID. Named after Georgie White—the first woman to run the Grand as a commercial enterprise. She tied army surplus rafts together to navigate the larger rapids. River mile 24 is named in her honor. BASS RAPID. Reportedly the deadliest rapid in the Canyon, at mile 107. Once safely through, spy the cable crossing that William Bass built. HERMIT RAPID. The ER group’s favorite, a rollercoaster of a ride at river mile 95, and the strongest hydraulics in the Canyon.

LAVA FALLS + BERT LOPER. A pioneer of whitewater, in 1939 Loper ran Lava Falls and is the first to successfully navigate two wooden boats over Lava. In 1949, at 79 years old, he died of a heart attack on the river. Lava Falls is often considered the most difficult rapid in the Canyon.

> Bucket List
A Natural Selection Just back from a Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey to the Galapagos, ER Members Michael and Sheila Moran check off snorkeling with sea lions, birdwatching, and an astronomy lesson from their bucket list. TOP MEMORY FROM TRIP: Swimming with sea lions, we never
dreamed they’d be so close. MOST PHOTO-WORTHY MOMENT: The lava fields, because there were so many varieties of wildlife. The animals aren’t bothered by humans so you can take all day to set up your shot and not have to worry about the hawk flying away. NEVER THOUGHT WE’D EXPERIENCE: We jumped off the
top deck of the ship with the whole group cheering us on! It was so much fun and exhilarating. BEST MEAL: The BBQ dinner we had on the top deck. The grill was going and smell was wafting around the ship, yum! IF YOU GO: Definitely bring along an underwater camera. You
only need casual clothes, it is an expedition style experience. Do everything that is offered! SURPRISE FACTOR: When we thought about the trip before, we always imagined that the best activities would take place during the day, but we were actually fascinated by the night star gazing. One night, one of the expedition guides brought out a star pointer and showed us more constellations and planets than we knew were in the sky.
GO A perennial Member favorite, the Club now offers four distinct Galapagos cruise experiences with two award-winning partners, Quasar Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions. Ships range in size from a luxurious nine-cabin yacht to a fifty-cabin expedition ship, making each experience unique. exclusiveresorts.com/Galapagos-Islands-Ecuador-A-Natural-Selection
