With the top four clubs in each pool guaranteed qualification, there’s an important added incentive for the contenders: the clubs finishing first and second in their respective pools will have home venue advantage in the allimportant first knockout stage, the Round of 16. For those clubs that finish fifth in each pool, the journey does not end there as they qualify for the Round of 16 of the EPCR Challenge Cup. Everything is to play for. So, after what promises to be even more tension-fuelled action this month, we’ll have a clearer idea of the pathway to the showpiece Finals weekend at London’s state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next May for which over 45,000 tickets have already been sold.

WELCOME GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO TODAY’S INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP MATCH AGAINST OLD ADVERSARIES, GLASGOW WARRIORS. We return to the competition following a first loss at home this season against Northampton Saints in last weekend’s Gallagher Premiership Round 11 fixture. While it was a loss on the scoreboard, I truly believe a lot was learned from that encounter by our young squad. It was a fantastic game of rugby which was full of action right to the final whistle. On another Premiership note, we are excited to confirm our Newcastle Falcons and Bath Rugby fixtures. Falcons will be welcomed to Sandy Park on Saturday, March 23 KO 3pm while our West Country rivals will make their visit to Devon on Saturday, April 20 KO 5:30pm.

For this weekend, we look to return to the flarefilled form we enjoyed in the opening two rounds of this season’s Investec Champions Cup against Toulon and Munster. Today marks the tenth meeting between our two sides, and our record against the Scots at home sits firmly in our favour. In those ten meetings, Glasgow have travelled to Devon for six of them – in their last two visits, Chiefs have secured convincing victories, so we’ll hope for another strong performance today. We come back into the competition on some good form. The two games over Christmas were not only good performances but good results. Last week was a great game and had a huge input from us but we unfortunately came up a few seconds short of winning the game and collected two valuable points.

After some disappointment last week, we need to get our emotional energy just right and take it all onto the field with us! It’s going to be exciting! Finally, I would like to welcome Franco Smith, his staff, players and the supporters of Glasgow to Sandy Park and hope they enjoy their visit.

We could have done some things better, but we could have done things better in every game we have played this season, so we need to analyse last week exactly the same and then move forward and there is certainly no better game to move forward into than a home Investec Champions Cup game! This competition is hugely exciting for us as we have given ourselves an opportunity to progress further in the competition because of our first two results against Toulon and Munster. However, an opportunity is all it is at the moment because Glasgow are also fighting for qualification and will be desperate to collect points against us to climb up the table and promote their position. We are set for another big crowd, and I have to applaud the atmosphere that our supporters have created both home and away over the last few weeks – the support really comes through to the

CLUB NEWS WEST COUNTRY DERBY AND NEWCASTLE FIXTURES CONFIRMED Exeter Chiefs can now confirm dates and kick-off times for the Gallagher Premiership Round 13 fixture against Newcastle Falcons and Round 15 against Bath Rugby.

The two fixtures are included in the Chiefs’ 2023/24 season ticket, and individual match tickets are now available for purchase on our ticketing website.

The Geordie side will be welcomed to Sandy Park on Saturday, March 23 [KO 3pm] while the West Country rivals make their visit to Devon on Saturday, April 20 [KO 5:30pm].

CHIEFS TO TAKE ON UNIVERSITY OF EXETER IN FRIENDLY AT SANDY PARK Exeter Chiefs will take on University of Exeter in a ‘Town Versus Gown’ friendly match this month. The match will take place at Sandy Park Stadium on Monday, January 15 at 19:30. The university is an integral part of the Chiefs’ development pathway and has nurtured the talents of recent graduates such as Ross Vintcent, Ben Hammersley and Tom Cairns – al of whom are now making regular appearances in the Gallagher Premiership for Chiefs. Chiefs will be represented by wider squad members as well as some front-line players looking to make their return to action with some much-valued game time. The University will then be represented by their top Super BUCS team as they look to break into the Chiefs’ home fortress. All Chiefs season ticket holders will have the game included in their package or individual tickets can be purchased from our ticket site for £5 for adults, students and kids.

AT JUST 21 YEARS OLD, THE WELSH INTERNATIONAL IS RELISHING THE HONOUR OF LEADING OUT EXETER CHIEFS AS CAPTAIN THIS SEASON IN GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP AND INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP ACTION. Rugby was in the genes for Dafydd Jenkins with two grandfathers who played the oval ball sport and a father who represented Swansea and Neath from the back row position. A lock himself, the strapping youngster has already reached the prestigious international stage. Jenkins made his Welsh debut in November 2022 against autumn international opposition, Georgia, before going on to be a part of his country’s Rugby World Cup journey in France in 2023. Having returned to home soil, Jenkins was appointed the Chiefs’ captain for the season by Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter. Aided by the experienced know-how of club captain Jack Yeandle and elite international Henry Slade, the young forward believes his captaincy has been going positively so far. “Taking on the captaincy has been going alright. Obviously, the results have been going well which helps but in terms of the actual role of captain, I’ve been very lucky that Sladey, Yenz and all our half backs are great leaders as well. So, I can almost take a bit of a step back and try to just lead from my actions, because I’m not the best speaker. I just try to be steady and consistent.” “Taking on the role originally was obviously a bit nerve wracking but it’s also an honour. You get to lead out a bunch of great players, so to do that is something I really enjoy. I look forward every week to running out at Sandy Park – it’s an honour.”

“YOU DON’T REALLY HAVE TO TELL BOYS TO SHOW UP AND WORK FOR EACH OTHER BECAUSE EVERYONE IS WILLING TO DO IT ALREADY." The bunch of players Jenkins mentioned are an incredibly tight-knit group of Chiefs players who have impressed onlookers this season – bringing together youth, hunger to drive forward and skill to achieve more than most expected from them at this point in Chiefs’ acknowledged rebuild. “The group being so tight definitely makes my life as captain easier. You don’t really have to tell boys to show up and work for each other because everyone is willing to do it already. That’s also the benefit of having a group that’s so close together – we don’t have to try to force anything, it’s more about the technical side of things.” Looking at the performances this season, it has been easy to identify the work-rate and impact of Jenkins and his second-row colleagues, Lewis Pearson and Rusi Tuima. The bond and playing partnership they’ve created amongst their trio is something which all have described as being a natural development. “Lew and Rusi are both such good players. They’re both class, so to be honest, you have to play well to make sure you still start. Having that competition is something I’ve really enjoyed. I know Lew and Rusi can play really well together and do a fantastic job, but I love playing alongside both of them.” All three have appeared in the opening rounds of this season’s Investec Champions Cup – a lastgasp victory over Toulon at the Stade Felix Mayol followed by an imposing performance to defeat Munster in Devon. Jenkins believes the experiences of the competition have been special for this squad which is so focused on remaining together as they forge their own path as the new generation of Chiefs players. “The Toulon trip allowed us a chance to enjoy France, which was great. Getting to spend that extra time together, being a tight group, was really enjoyable. Then the Munster win at home was special because we had a massive crowd, and everyone was writing us off beforehand. And now, with both those results, we’ve put ourselves

in a position to possibly win the pool, which we want to try do.” “You have it in the back of your mind that we’re only a couple of games away from the knockouts and that’s something we’re looking forward to, but this weekend is just a focus on Glasgow.” “We play them in this competition pretty often, so a lot of the older boys know what they can bring. They’ve definitely got international qualities in their ranks, which we’ll look forward to testing ourselves against.” “I feel like their attack is their biggest strength, so it really makes us have to focus on our defence. We’ll need a good defensive performance where we shut down a lot of their line-speed.” Glasgow is the focus locked in for the squad this weekend, but there is the background draw of a Premiership Rugby Cup semi-final, a potential run into the Gallagher Premiership knockout stages and, with a result today, a path into the last 16 of the Investec Champions Cup. While it is not the sole goal, the Chiefs captain admits it is a happening and an opportunity which the players have began to tentatively think about and whisper about the possibilities. “We definitely think, and talk a little, about the possibility of winning trophies – we wouldn’t be playing professional sport if that wasn’t a goal. We do have to hold ourselves back a bit and take it week-on-week as that’s what’s going to allow us to be successful. Definitely, in the long term, this is going to be a special group to be a part of.”

FROM THE PRESS BOX AFTER A FANTASTIC FEW WEEKS OF GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP ACTION, WE ARE BACK TO THE INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP TODAY AND THE VISIT OF OLD ADVERSARIES GLASGOW WARRIORS TO SANDY PARK. A Chiefs win would guarantee them a place in the round of 16, and also increase their chances of having a home tie in that round. This will be the tenth time that Exeter and Glasgow have done battle in Europe. The record is four wins each, and one draw, so it is all to play for this lunchtime in that little contest. Glasgow have even won here at Sandy Park, a 1510 success back in January 2014, but Chiefs have triumphed on the other four occasions. In fact, the Warriors will not have fond memories of their last two trips to Devon soil as they suffered two of their biggest ever European defeats, losing 42-0 in December 2020, and 52-17 in January 2022. That last meeting two years ago was an incredible match as the Chiefs only led 14-10 at half-time, and the Warriors actually took a 17-14 lead with a converted try five minutes into the second period. But they were then hit by a stunning avalanche of points from Exeter, who ran in six tries in a devastating 27-minute period with some of the best rugby they have produced in Europe.

Talking of French rugby, I enjoyed watching former Chiefs No.8 Sam Simmonds play for Montpellier against Toulon last Sunday evening. It was a muchneeded 27-17 win for Montpellier, only their third in the league this season, but it still leaves them four points adrift at the bottom of the French Top 14 table. Simmonds was his usual all-action self, despite having heavy strapping on both legs, and it looked at one stage as if he would have to go off early after appearing to roll his ankle, but his foot was strapped up and he managed to get through the full 80 minutes. Younger brother Joe was also among the points once again for Pau, kicking five penalties in their 2920 home defeat to a La Rochelle side still missing the injured Jack Nowell.

The game before, in 2020, was rather more comfortable from a Chiefs point of view, with 14 unanswered points in the first half and a further 28 after the break, with two former Glasgow favourites in Stuart Hogg and Jonny Gray rubbing further salt into the visitors’ wounds by getting on the try scoresheet. There will be no Gray today sadly as he continues his long battle back from an ankle injury sustained in the Champions Cup semi-final against La Rochelle in Bordeaux at the end of last April. HEAD COACH: FRANCO SMITH The South African, who is the former Head Coach of the Italian international rugby team, arrived at Scotstoun as the new man in charge in August 2022. A stacked playing career included international representation of the Springboks, southern hemisphere club rugby for Cheetahs, Blue Bulls and the Pumas before European rugby called his name in Newport, Bologna and Benetton Treviso. The former back’s inaugural coaching role came as backs coach for his former team, Free State Cheetahs. He returned to Italy in 2007 to take on the head coach role at Benetton, whom he led to two National Championship of Excellence titles before the side joined the Pro12 competition in 2011.

Returning to his homeland of South Africa in 2014, he was taken on by the national set-up in 2017 before swapping his Springbok colours for those of the Azzurri in 2019. Since joining Glasgow, he looks to have brought an energy to the side as he entrusts the youth of the squad to drive the intensity and progress of the Warriors.

ONE TO WATCH: STAFFORD MCDOWALL Home grown talent Stafford McDowall has bided his time, proved his talent and risen to the top of the Glasgow Warriors set-up as the 25-year-old has recently been captaining the Scotstoun outfit. The boy from Dumfries began his rugby journey with Stewarty RFC before joining the Glasgow development set-up, signing his first professional contract with the club in 2018. With Scottish age-grade representation to his name at U18 and U20 level – the latter of which he captained in the 2018 U20s World Championship – 2019 saw the blossoming young centre named the Land Rover Young Player of the Season.

Since his Warriors debut against Southern Kings in October 2017, McDowall has weathered the toil of injury setbacks to return to top form to log 67 appearances to his name along with 13 tries in Glasgow colours. The 6ft 4 centre – who is comfortable in the inside or outside roles – has been enjoying a resurgence in his love for rugby this season having briefly considered leaving the sport behind for life on the family farm. A threat on attack with a good step and powerful carry in his bag of tricks, the back is also a confronting figure in the defensive set-up.

COMMUNITY UPDATE NEW HITZ OFFICER APPOINTED AT THE EXETER CHIEFS HITZ 2024 sees an exciting new chapter for the Exeter Chiefs HITZ with the appointment (in late 2023) of a brand new HITZ officer and cohort of students, a reset to offering an NCFE Level 1 Employability, Sports Leadership courses, GCSE Maths and English retakes and an academic year peppered with enrichment, work experience and trips/activities. So, welcome to Angelique Aldworth.

Other highlights have included celebrating the HITZ 15-year anniversary and enjoying a trip down to Adrenalin Quarry with the whole cohort on the Exeter Chiefs coach. We had the Royal Navy join us for a bout of Ready Steady Cook, building rafts at Haven, overcoming fears at Clip and Climb and starting new adventures through our Sports Leaders Courses, exploring the rewarding world of coaching.

One of the highlights to the end of the last academic year have been one of our students having been shortlisted for an ‘Academic Achievement’ award at the annual Hitz awards, that took place at Twickenham Stadium in November 2023.

STARTING THIS YEAR WITH A BANG, WE WOULD LIKE TO ROUND UP LAST YEAR’S GREAT EVENTS AND GIVE YOU A SMALL INSIGHT OF THE YEARS EVENTS TO COME. We held our first Family Food Day in June 2023 – a hugely successful event where we set up in a local school and together with Chef Michael Caines, served up a delicious BBQ for 1,000 children and families. Also last year, the Exeter Chiefs Cycle Club not only attended the Chiefs away match in La Rochelle in France but Cycled there. Almost 600 miles covered and an incredible £13,578 raised. Since they started their cycling adventures in 2016, the cycle club has raised a total of £128,827.00 in donations to the Chiefs Charity Foundation. The Foundation held a charity Boxing Match between the Met Police and Royal Marines Charity in October 2023, sponsored by SuperCat. This was a fun-filled evening enjoyed by all – the atmosphere was electric, and the total raised was a whopping £18,597.71 to divide between the Chiefs Foundation and the Marines Charity. December saw our yearly Foundation Christmas lunch take place in connection with Devon Wooden Spoon. Wonderful festive cheer was shared by all, with an online silent auction, live auction, tombola, raffles, prizes galore, player Q&A and our fabulous compare for the day, David Flatman. The event was a huge success raising close to a staggering £30,000. 2024 starts off with a fabulous Charity lunch in March at the famous Michael Caines restaurant set in the stunning, award winning Lympstone Manor Hotel. The day is always a sought-after event and includes player

Q&A, raffle, guest speakers and of course a sumptuous lunch. The Cycle Club will again venture across to France to raise funds for the Chiefs Chairty Foundation on another epic adventure while we will be holding another Family Food Day event again so watch this space for information on that and our Property Ball which is in the works. This year we will be holding more Foundation XV meetings and networking events. These are a great way to find out more about how to get involved. To date our amazing match day collectors have raised near an incredible £250,000 and in 2023 alone the Exeter Chiefs Foundation raised close to £340,000 and we couldn’t have done it without you.
