WELCOME HAVING ENJOYED A STRONG START TO THE PREMIERSHIP RUGBY SEASON, OUR EXETER CHIEFS ENTERED 2024 SITTING SECOND IN THE TABLE, JUST ONE POINT BEHIND TODAY’S OPPOSITION. I would like to begin by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year. I hope you enjoyed a lovely festive period filled with family, friends, and some great rugby. I would also like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who attended our home games throughout 2023, especially those who were a part of our record crowd against Leicester Tigers just before Christmas. I look forward to welcoming you all to Sandy Park in 2024. An incredible effort and work-rate on the road against Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate two days before New Years’ Eve briefly earned Chiefs the top spot in the league table before a strong performance from Northampton Saints pipped us to the post by just a single point. And so, I believe today’s game could be an enthralling encounter.

Personally, I am very much looking forward to another trip to France to watch Chiefs take on Bayonne in our last pool match in European competition. This is sure to be a game not to miss, so I encourage everyone to look at our Exeter Chiefs travel offer. The package – which is available on our ticketing website – provides fans the opportunity to purchase seats on the squad’s charter flight together with a match ticket and private airport transfers to Biarritz. I’m sure you all will join me in applauding this team for the performances they have entertained us with already this season. This is a young Chiefs team which is going through a period of real growth and development. Many people still underestimate what they are capable of but that is a situation we have found ourselves in before as a club, and we have proved them wrong and thrived. I truly hope that is what this team will go on to do. Finally, please join me in extending a very warm welcome to the Northampton Saints directors, coaches, players and supporters. We hope you have a fantastic day at Sandy Park.

This calendar year is sure to be another action-packed one for our club. Still to come this season we have a play-off appearance in the Premiership Rugby Cup, the possibility of the Premiership league play-offs is still on the table, and if we continue our impressive form then there is a real chance of progressing in the Investec Champions Cup.

ROB BAXTER OBE WELCOME BACK TO SANDY PARK FOR OUR FIRST GAME OF 2024, I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A GREAT CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT 2024 MIGHT BRING. WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN STARTING THE YEAR WITH A CLASH OF THE TOP TWO TEAMS IN THE GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP? It certainly makes for an exciting start to the second half of the season and gives us a lot to play for in all competitions. Our aim is to make sure this continues for as long as possible and to keep targeting consistent, high-level performances so that we are always in the fight, and we keep creating opportunities to win games. This has been the key to our recent performances where we have physically and mentally turned up and then built games that keep the opposition under pressure and so create good periods of the games for us. As a team we are starting to feel comfortable being in tight games without losing composure, this allows our hard work and emotional drive to be rewarded and the results have been very positive.

Today looks like being another fantastic crowd and hopefully we can play in a way that gets you on your feet and enjoying the day. Finally, can I welcome Phil Dowson, his staff, players and the supporters of Northampton Saints. I hope they all enjoy their visit to Sandy Park.

I really can’t credit the players enough for the way they are committing to each other and that is making us a difficult team for the opposition to deal with. Another great thing about the last few weeks has been the crowd sizes and the atmospheres this creates. Obviously, for us, the last two home games against Munster and Leicester Tigers were incredible and rate right up there with some of the best days at Sandy Park, it really feels like we are all on the journey together and that is all we can ask of you as supporters.

CLUB NEWS CHIEFS WOMEN STAR IN FIRST EVER GLASGOW V EDINBURGH WOMEN’S MATCH Exeter Chiefs Women were represented in the groundbreaking inaugural Glasgow Warriors versus Edinburgh women’s match at Hive Stadium over the New Year period. Prop Panashe Muzambe represented Edinburgh, lining up against Chiefs teammate Mairi McDonald at scrum half for Glasgow.

Today's bucket collectors are Jay's Aim.

The match was a part of the wider Celtic Challenge competition which returns for a second year with an extended list of teams participating in 2023/24. The cross-border competition between teams from Scotland, Ireland and Wales aims to enable players to gain experience of game-time at a level better balance between domestic and international platforms. Though Edinburgh came out on top at Hive Stadium, it was an incredible spectacle for the women ahead of the men’s 1872 Cup match, and we would like to congratulate Panashe and Mairi on their involvement.

CHIEFS TO TAKE ON UNIVERSITY OF EXETER IN FRIENDLY AT SANDY PARK Exeter Chiefs will take on University of Exeter in a ‘Town Versus Gown’ friendly match this month. The match will take place at Sandy Park Stadium on Monday, January 15 at 19:30. The university is an integral part of the Chiefs’ development pathway and has nurtured the talents of recent graduates such as Ross Vintcent, Ben Hammersley and Tom Cairns – al of whom are now making regular appearances in the Gallagher Premiership for Chiefs. Chiefs will be represented by wider squad members as well as some front-line players looking to make their return to action with some much-valued game time. The University will then be represented by their top Super BUCS team as they look to break into the Chiefs’ home fortress. All Chiefs season ticket holders will have the game included in their package or individual tickets can be purchased from our ticket site for £5 for adults, students and kids.

POSITION: FLY HALF/CENTRE HEIGHT: 1.84M (6FT) WEIGHT: 97KG (15ST 3LBS)

THE JINK-STEPPING CENTRE FROM SWANSEA SWAPPED ONE COASTAL TOWN FOR ANOTHER WHEN HE ARRIVED IN DEVON AHEAD OF THE CURRENT SEASON AND SO FAR, HE’S LOVING IT. Heralded as Rob Baxter’s ‘big-name signing’ in the summer of 2023, emerging talent Joe Hawkins joined Exeter Chiefs from Welsh United Rugby Championship side, Ospreys. A first move away from home could have been daunting for the youngster, but he’s settled into life in the heart of Devon with ease and is steadily enjoying getting to know his new home more away from a rugby field. “The move to Exeter Chiefs and adapting to life in Devon has been perfect, essentially. Everything since moving down has gone really well. I knew a lot of the boys down here which made the transition easy. “It’s similar to home down here – same sort of environment – and there’s a lot of Welsh boys, so it’s a little mini home away from home. The rugby going so well on the field as well has meant things have been amazing. “I’ve done little bits of exploring around the area away from the time I spend at the club. I’ve been on the standard Exmouth beach trip, and then I’ve been on a couple of trips to towns about an hour’s trip away like Salcombe. So, I’ve been out and about but I’ve got 16

plenty more of the place to explore.” On the field, Hawkins’ ever-developing centre partnership with experienced international player and Chiefs talisman Henry Slade has drawn many an eye this season. It’s a relationship that Hawkins describes as having simply fallen into place naturally. The Welshman believes that this bond, which extends to the squad as a whole, has been integral to Exeter’s progress and success so far this season. “I think you can see from the performances on the field that, week-by-week, we’ve gotten better. That’s probably as the group has grown tighter and gotten to know more about one another. I think it’s clear to see we’re all playing for each other. Pulling together in a lot of the late wins we’ve had – that shows who we are as a group. “We try not to put any pressure on the group. Where we find ourselves in the league at the minute maybe does add a tiny bit of pressure. Coming into the season there was no real expectation from the outside of what was expected of Exeter, so we were sort of just going out to enjoy it and see how we go. That’s gone well so far, so we’re just trying to keep the same mindset going forward.” The energetic, hard-hitting performances have not only drawn in the positive results this season, but also the crowds. Attendances at Sandy Park have steadily increased as the promise of this Chiefs team has come more into the light. This culminated in a record crowd for the festive fixture as 15,000 people packed into the stadium to see Chiefs victorious. “That was class. We’ve had decent crowds all year but to get a sell-out for a big game against a quality side like Leicester Tigers was amazing to play in front of that atmosphere. I think having that support behind you goes such a long way,

"IT’S SIMILAR TO HOME DOWN HERE – SAME SORT OF ENVIRONMENT – SO IT’S A LITTLE MINI HOME AWAY FROM HOME."

especially when things get tough on the field and you can hear the crowd cheering you on, that spurs the team on.” As Chiefs have steadily worked their way past opponents and up the league table throughout the first half of the season, Hawkins explains the squad have stayed committed to the simple aspects of their mentality which has worked for them so far. “I think boys are just a bit excited by where we are in the table and looking to build on that going forward. Everything is in our own hands in the position we’re in at the minute, so as long as we keep putting performances in and getting wins then hopefully, we’ll be in and around it at the end of the season.” The first confrontation which could be key to those end of season goals for Chiefs will be today’s clash with top-placed Northampton Saints. “We’ll keep doing what we’ve been doing, keep working hard, playing for each other and hopefully we’ll be on the right side of the result.”

Stainless steal.

In 1972, famed designer Gérald Genta created an oxymoron. Priced more than many precious metal rivals, the ‘luxury stainless steel timepiece’ was not an immediate success. But eventually its tough, elegant body, integrated bracelet and patterned dial caught on. A watch that dressed up for dinner. Or down, at the pool. Today’s 40mm, base automatic of that original watch costs £22,850 more than the new ‘Twelve’ - named for its dodecagon-sided bezel and rear lock ring. Our watch is thinner, goes deeper and offers a choice of C1/BL Grade X1-lumed dials. A polished, brushed and sandblasted case of daylight (and night time) robbery? Do your research.

FROM THE PRESS BOX WHAT IS IT ABOUT EXETER CHIEFS AND PLAYING AT ASHTON GATE?. It is where they won the Champions Cup final against Racing 92 in 2020, and they have now won six of their last seven Premiership matches there, as well as three out of three in cup competitions. It is an astonishing record, especially given their difficulty in winning at other venues in recent times, though the superb 24-14 success over Bristol Bears last weekend did make it three away wins on the trot for the Chiefs in all competitions, following on from their Gallagher Premiership triumph at Newcastle Falcons and Investec Champions Cup win in Toulon. That improvement on the road will certainly be put to the test later this month, when they travel to French side Bayonne for their final pool match in Europe, before tackling reigning league champions Saracens at the end of January before the Premiership takes a near two-month break. To finish 2023 with six wins out of seven matches in all competitions was a fantastic achievement by Rob Baxter’s young charges and it leaves them nicely placed as they tackle the New Year. They are second in both their European pool and the Premiership to Northampton Saints, and who should be the visitors to Sandy Park today to kick off 2024 than the men from the East Midlands for what should be a mouth-watering affair!

We are approaching that time of year when countries will start announcing their Six Nations Championship line-ups, and it will surely be a major surprise if Henry Slade is not included in Steve Borthwick’s England plans. There is also likely to be much interest surrounding his fellow Chief, winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who put himself firmly in the spotlight with his excellent man-of-the-match performance against the Bears. The Cardiff-born youngster is eligible for both Wales and England, and he sensibly refused to be drawn on the subject when interviewed by TNT Sport’s Welsh presenter Sarah Elgin after the match at Ashton Gate. As an Englishman, I hope he makes the right choice, and the one that God intended! If so, he could be in that Six Nations squad for England, particularly with fellow flyer Henry Arundell now ineligible due to his decision to ply his trade in France. There should also be a place for Sale Sharks’ former Exeter hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who is back in action after his injury problems which, fortunately for Borthwick and England, scuppered his summer move to Montpellier, and he scored a try for the Sharks in their defeat to Northampton.

Saints have won their last four in the Premiership, and that includes a superb 18-12 early-December win at Saracens, and a 21-17 home success over last season’s beaten finalists Sale Sharks last Saturday. The last two games before Christmas saw crowd figures at Sandy Park make a big leap up for the matches against Leicester Tigers and Munster, and hopefully that will continue today for this clash between the league’s top two.

SEASON OVERVIEW: TODAY COULD BE A COLOSSAL AS FIRST AND SECOND IN THE TABLE FACE OFF. Both Northampton Saints and Exeter Chiefs have put faith, trust, and work into the youth of their squads, interspersing the emerging talent with the experienced know-how of centurion players. Saints stumbled initially at the start of the season with close losses to Sale Sharks and Bristol Bears before finding their feet to secure seven wins on the road and at home, interrupted only once by a loss to Leicester Tigers at Mattioli Woods Welford Road. With last weekend’s comeback win over Sale, today’s opposition earned themselves a top of the table standing. Topping the charts for defenders

34

beaten so far this season, Saints sit second to Chiefs in metres made statistics. Fin Smith has proved reliable at the kicking tee, writing his name into the points top 10 charts behind Chiefs’ Henry Slade. Fellow half-back Alex Mitchell is always a threat of sniping through a minute gap in a defensive line for a try – of which he has five to his name this season in the Premiership. Capable carriers, ruck disrupters, harsh tacklers, and classy backs aplenty in both sides, today could be an attacking masterclass with defence the true separating factor.

HEAD COACH: PHIL DOWSON Renowned for a six-year playing career at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens – in which the former back rower chalked up 186 Saints appearances – Phil Dowson took on the Director of Rugby mantel ahead of the 2022/23 season. Dowson retired from professional rugby in Worcester Warriors colours in 2017 with 262 total Premiership Rugby appearances to his name. The former player also has silverware in his trophy cabinet having been a part of Saints’ 2010 Anglo-Welsh Cup title and the double success of league and European Challenge Cup titles in 2013.

The Saints man’s coaching career began with a return to Northampton as assistant coach for the 2017/18 season. Progressing to forwards coach in 2018, Dowson learned from the tutelage of Chris Boyd before being entrusted with the top spot in 2022 following Boyd’s departure. Securing a fourth-place table spot at the conclusion of his first season in charge, Dowson arrives at Sandy Park today having shepherded his men to the top of the table in the current campaign with the second half of the season still to play out.

ONE TO WATCH: ALEX COLES Buoyed by a contract renewal and a 100th club appearance in the last week, Alex Coles will surely be a man on a mission to stamp his impact on today’s encounter.

Black, Green and Gold, Coles’ work rate and performances earned him the next step on the ladder in 2022 – an England first-team call-up for the Autumn Series.

The momentum-driven forward – who has been a part of the Saints set-up since age 13 and has 10 tries in his professional Saints career – is a threat from either the back row or lock position.

With a style of play which looks to come naturally to the youngster – who is still only 24 years old – and an intelligence for the game beyond his years, Coles will be an integral part of Saints’ strategy moving forward.

Developing through the England international age-grade set-up alongside his time in the Academy and development system of the

COMMUNITY UPDATE NEW HITZ OFFICER APPOINTED AT THE EXETER CHIEFS HITZ 2024 sees an exciting new chapter for the Exeter Chiefs HITZ with the appointment (in late 2023) of a brand new HITZ officer and cohort of students, a reset to offering an NCFE Level 1 Employability, Sports Leadership courses, GCSE Maths and English retakes and an academic year peppered with enrichment, work experience and trips/activities. Angelique Aldworth, HITZ officer explained, “We are tremendously thrilled to already have a new group of students that have been working hard towards the

40

first steps into an apprenticeship, back to education or into full time work, having been working to gain the tools to understand the benefits of practicing job applications. “Attaching this mindset to how to be a good employee, work colleague, writing an impressive CV and using physical activity to understand teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, ties those rugby values into the workplace. A desire to not just thrive but aspire to a healthy, productive lifestyle.” One of the highlights to the end of the last academic year have been one of our students having been shortlisted for an ‘Academic Achievement’ award at the annual Hitz awards, that took place at Twickenham Stadium in November 2023.

Callum Douglas came to us having been diagnosed with ASD & ASS. He had finished school having gained 3’s in English and Maths previously and describing himself as having no confidence and withdrawn. Callum showed a skill in tech and a keen interest in a future in media. So, he set to work, knowing English and Maths would be key to unlocking that potential. We are delighted to say that he finished his year having achieved a level 2 Functional skill in Maths (equivalent to a 4) and a GCSE Level 6 in English! Smashing all expectations and doing himself the justice and reward for the hard work he deserved. Other highlights have included celebrating the HITZ 15-year anniversary and enjoying a trip down to Adrenalin Quarry with the whole cohort on the Exeter Chiefs coach, quite the treat. We had the Royal Navy join us for a bout of Ready Steady Cook, building rafts at Haven Banks and paddling our creations down the canal, overcoming fears at Clip and Climb and starting new adventures through our Sports Leaders Courses, exploring the rewarding world of coaching. If you know someone who may benefit from joining us for their educational journey, can offer work experience for our students or would like to guest speak on a particular career please contact Angelique Aldworth on 07920 371788 or angeliquealdworth@exeterchiefs.co.uk We are looking forward to 2024 and all the challenges it will bring! 41
