WELCOME AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE FIRST TWO ROUNDS IN THE INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP, OUR CLUB RETURNS TO GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP ACTION TODAY AT A SOLDOUT SANDY PARK. It has been an incredibly enjoyable experience to watch our young team perform so well in European matches against rugby behemoths, Toulon and Munster. They have stayed in the fight to secure results on consecutive weekends and their commitment and work rate has been commendable, gathering respect from the wider rugby community.

I would like to acknowledge the news that one of our own, Aidon Davis, is undergoing treatment for his recent diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Aidon is a beloved member of our first team squad, and I know the whole Chiefs Family will join me in wishing him every strength in his battle against cancer. Please join me in extending a very warm welcome to the Leicester Tigers directors, coaches, players and supporters. We hope you have a fantastic day at Sandy Park. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it arrives.

I know they will not let recent outcomes affect their focus, however. Under the tutelage of our experienced coaching team, the squad have celebrated their successes together – as they should – before returning to the business of training to maintain the momentum they have looked to be building in the Premiership so far this season. Today, Leicester Tigers come to Devon for our festive fixture in front of a record crowd at Sandy Park. I hope both home and travelling supporters have been able to take a walk around our Christmas Market on our piazza – there are some lovely last-minute gifts available if you have left your Christmas shopping too late this year – and I look forward to hearing the roar of voices as our players emerge from the tunnel this afternoon.

ROB BAXTER OBE

WELCOME TO SANDY PARK FOR OUR PRE-CHRISTMAS GAME AGAINST LEICESTER TIGERS AND OUR FIRST SELL OUT GAME OF THE SEASON! I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS PREPARATIONS DONE SO THAT YOU CAN RELAX AND REALLY ENJOY TODAY. HOPEFULLY OUR PERFORMANCE WILL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT TIME! The last couple of performances in Europe have been very pleasing with the team showing great fight to stick in games when the momentum has been with the opposition and also hold their composure together to understand how they can change that momentum and create pressure situations for the opposition. The two games were different in some ways but also similar in a few crucial areas. In Toulon there was a lot of hype around how well Toulon had been playing this season and their expectations in the Investec Champions Cup as previous multiple winners, this did mean they were the team under an amount of pressure for the result and that became more obvious as the game wore on. We had to weather a storm for a while, but you could feel us growing into the game and once we forced the score that took us to within six points you could feel the situation start to affect both teams – for Toulon they started looking edgy whereas we looked excited and energised by the opportunity to win the game. Last week, although we were the home team, the fact that Munster had only drawn at home in round one meant there was pressure to collect points in round two. Again, we had to deal with early pressure playing into the breeze, but we kept the scoreboard ticking over and so Munster never got comfortable. Again with 20 minutes left we pulled it back to a one-score game and then an error from Munster combined with some great energy from us forced first a match leading try and then a bonus point try later as Munster had to force things. I also have to thank our supporters – I had a walk around Toulon the night before the game in France and had several conversations with supporters and saw many more, you helped create a great atmosphere at the ground and made the win very special for the players. Then this week we had a great atmosphere at Sandy Park straight from kick-off – it was our biggest crowd of the season and it certainly felt like it! I also have to say well done to the travelling Munster supporters who also helped create

a great atmosphere and I would like to say a personal thank you to any I met in Exeter on Sunday night when I went out for dinner as every single one of them was complimentary about our performance and wished us well, even if some were in a slightly cheeky manner. At one stage I moved onto a table with my wife and friends that was vacated by Munster supporters, and they laughed that it wasn’t the only thing they had given up to us that day! Those are the kind of things that make rugby and rugby people great. Now we are back into Premiership action and if we want to keep the season exciting for us, we need to maintain a collection of points over the festive period. That starts with Leicester at home today then Bristol Bears away on Friday 29th December. These are two really important games for us so some wholehearted support will be a massive help. So, I hope you have all been good and Santa brings you everything you have asked for…. Finally, I would like to welcome Dan McKellar, his staff, players and the supporters of Leicester Tigers to Sandy Park and hope you have safe journeys and enjoy your visit.

CLUB NEWS EXETER CHIEFS SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER AT BRAMBLE WARD A handful of Exeter Chiefs players visited children and youngsters at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Bramble Ward recently to distribute toys and gifts on behalf of their teammates and the Exeter Chiefs Foundation. The players in attendance were Ollie Devoto, Scott Sio, Jack Yeandle, Jacques Vermeulen and Hallam Chapman. Devoto, who was instrumental in planning this year’s visit, said: “It was amazing to get the opportunity to head down to the RD&E and to put some smiles on faces. We even managed to surprise some young Chiefs fans, which was extra special. Each player at the club had to get two presents and, although there was some questionable wrapping, they all helped to contribute to a great afternoon.” Club captain Jack Yeandle was also delighted to make the Christmas visit to the ward, saying: “It is always great to have the opportunity to get some smiles on their little faces. I feel that nowadays it hits a bit harder as I’m a parent myself. So, it’s nice

to give the children on the ward a bit of Christmas cheer.” We would like to wish everyone on the ward a very Merry Christmas.

POSITION: LOCK/BACK-ROW HEIGHT: 1.94M (6FT 4IN) WEIGHT: 117KG (18ST 5LBS)

BIDING HIS TIME HAVING BEEN IN THE CHIEFS ENVIRONMENT FOR SIX SEASONS, RUSI TUIMA HAS SEEN A RUN OF GAMES COME HIS WAY THIS SEASON AND THE FIJIAN-BORN FORWARD HAS CERTAINLY MADE THE MOST OF EVERY MINUTE SPENT ON THE PITCH – ESPECIALLY IN HIS NEW SECOND ROW BERTH. It was just a few short months ago that Forwards Coach Rob Hunter approached Tuima with the idea of moving forward from his back row position to one in the boiler room of the scrum – the second row. It would mean some new learnings but the young forward saw the potential merit in the move. “I came into the first pre-season block looking to be in the blindside flanker, wider back row role but then Rob Hunter flagged up the idea of me being in the second row and I thought, ‘if it gets me in the line-up then I’ll go for it’. Since then, I’ve been moving in and out of the second row, learning as I go.” “It’s actually not too dissimilar to playing in the back row, especially the way we run things at 14

Chiefs. I can still show my strengths while playing second row, it’s just I’m a bit more involved in lineouts and scrums.” The move has meant 26-year-old Tuima has struck up strong on-field partnerships with Welsh international Dafydd Jenkins and Lewis Pearson – bonds which seem to be growing in strength and potential on a weekly basis. And Tuima believes it’s been a natural process to develop together. “It’s not something we’ve worked on, I think it’s just that our natural playing abilities compliment each other. With me and Lew – we’ve grown up playing together, since we were 16. He and I came up through the Academy together so I know how he plays, and he can read how I play. Then, with Dafydd, he’s just a naturally gifted rugby player so he’s quite easy to play alongside – he does the hard work and I try to tail onto the back of that.” “Me and Lew have pretty much been in the same position throughout our time here, just trying to push ourselves into that first team. This season just seems to have been the one where we’ve managed to do it, and to do it together has been pretty special. I didn’t see any of it coming.” External discussion of Exeter Chiefs this season has very much centred around the young age, inexperience and promise of the current generation of Chiefs first team players. Internally, Tuima explains these talking points don’t phase the squad. “Age is kind of on our side, to be honest. We’re just enthusiastic about playing. Each week, as soon as the team gets named, we all get a bit of a buzz around it. It’s more excitement than nervousness because a lot of us boys have been trying to break into this first team for a while. So, once we all have that opportunity, I think we all try to grab it.”

"I THINK THIS GROUP IS GOING TO DO SPECIAL THINGS OVER THE HOWEVER MANY YEARS THAT WE STICK TOGETHER."

“I 100% feel like we’re going to push-on as a squad. I think this group is going to do special things over the however many years that we stick together.” This weekend sees Chiefs play in front of a record crowd at Sandy Park – a stadium sell-out for Leicester Tigers coming to town for a festive fixture as Christmas fast approaches. Tuima, who has 30 Chiefs appearances to date, describes the prospect of playing in front of a sell-out as interesting – something none of the players will have experienced before, but something he is certain will spur them on. And hopefully that support from the ever-loyal Chiefs Family will carry the squad into the New Year and a run of highly competitive games – more Gallagher Premiership action, an Investec Champions Cup second block and a Premiership Rugby Cup semi-final. “Yeah, my body is probably going to be ruined by the end of it, but I’ll enjoy it while we’re in it! In all honesty though, it’s some exciting times ahead with a special group of boys, so hopefully there’ll be many more memories to come." 15

Stainless steal.

In 1972, famed designer Gérald Genta created an oxymoron. Priced more than many precious metal rivals, the ‘luxury stainless steel timepiece’ was not an immediate success. But eventually its tough, elegant body, integrated bracelet and patterned dial caught on. A watch that dressed up for dinner. Or down, at the pool. Today’s 40mm, base automatic of that original watch costs £22,850 more than the new ‘Twelve’ - named for its dodecagon-sided bezel and rear lock ring. Our watch is thinner, goes deeper and offers a choice of C1/BL Grade X1-lumed dials. A polished, brushed and sandblasted case of daylight (and night time) robbery? Do your research.

FROM THE PRESS BOX AS THE INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP TAKES A BREAK UNTIL THE NEW YEAR, I AM STILL FINDING IT HARD TO GET MY HEAD AROUND WHAT I HAVE WITNESSED FROM THE EXETER CHIEFS’ CLASS OF 2023-24 OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKENDS. To beat two European heavyweights and former European champions Toulon and Munster in successive weeks is astonishing enough, but to do it in the manner they have done, with come-frombehind victories, is even more incredible. Both at the Stade Felix Mayol in southern France and last week at Sandy Park, it would have been oh so easy for such a group of young players, combined with a smattering of experience, to just accept it was not meant to be as they fell 18-5 and 24-13 behind respectively in those two matches, and for the games just to drift away from them. But the Chiefs’ players were having none of that, and they have had it drilled into them by the coaching staff that if you stay in a game, anything can happen. There can be big momentum shifts; crucial decisions that suddenly give you a chance of winning, or at least taking something from the game. There was no bigger momentum shift than against Munster, who seemed very comfortable when Shane Daly got their bonus-point try 10 minutes into the second half to put them 11 points in front. I am sure many Exeter fans at that stage would have taken a losing bonus point, but two tries in the space of three minutes turned the match on its head, and all of a sudden Exeter were 27-24 in front. You had to feel for Munster winger Calvin Nash. The bounce of a rugby ball can be so cruel at times, and while he was trying to sort the situation out, he found himself being confronted by a marauding giant lock in the shape of Jack Dunne. There can’t have been anything more satisfying for a man from Leinster to score such a crucial try against their arch-rivals Munster, and you couldn’t wipe the smile off the big man’s face after the game. A feature of last Sunday’s match was the impact

the bench made, with back rower Ross Vintcent particularly outstanding, and Rob Baxter labelling it as his best performance in an Exeter shirt. However, in both games, the Chiefs seemed to have found an extra gear in the closing stages of matches, with their fitness levels shining through, and that is all down to the excellent work the strength and conditioning staff do with the players week in and week out. The Chiefs have always prided themselves on keeping going until the end of matches, but you have got to have the physical ability to be able to do that. They showed it again against Gloucester too in the Premiership last month when they snatched a lastgasp 25-24 victory. Pool Three makes very pleasant reading at the moment, with Exeter only kept off top spot by an inferior points difference of three by Northampton Saints, and it is incredible to see Toulon and Munster propping up the table. With two wins out of two, the Chiefs are pretty much guaranteed a place in the round of 16, but the aim now will be to ensure they stay in the top two when they play Glasgow and Bayonne in January to earn themselves a home tie. It is back to the league today and the visit of Leicester Tigers in front of what will be the biggest ever crowd to witness a game here at Sandy Park. Not a bad way to sign off 2023 at home! I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful New Year.

SEASON OVERVIEW: LEICESTER TIGERS STRUGGLED AT THE OUTSET OF THE SEASON, BUT WITH THE RETURN OF THEIR INTERNATIONAL STARS FROM WORLD CUP DUTY, THE FORMER PREMIERSHIP CHAMPIONS HAVE BEGUN TO FIND THEIR FOOTING IN THE LEAGUE.

32

The start of the 2023/24 season brought frustration for the Welford Road residents as they lost-out in narrow games against Bristol Bears, Sale Sharks, Saracens and Harlequins. In the tail end of the first block, results swung their way against Gloucester and Northampton Saints.

They can boast a squad headlined by international stars Handre Pollard, Julian Montoya, Dan Cole, Freddie Steward, Ben Youngs and Jasper Weise all interspersed by the intriguing emerging talent of the likes of Cameron Henderson, Jack Van Poortvliet, Charlie Atkinson and Ollie Hassell-Collins.

The former champions currently sit in seventh place in the table – three points behind Chiefs in sixth and just seven points off Sale in first place, exemplifying the tight battles which the league will come down to in the second half of the season.

Not at the pinnacle of their Premiershipwinning form of 2021/22, it is still not time to count the Tigers’ out of securing results against teams potentially on the rise, like today’s Exeter Chiefs.

HEAD COACH: DAN MCKELLAR Tigers’ Head Coach Dan McKellar was appointed to the position ahead of the current Gallagher Premiership season. Prior to his arrival, the Leicester men had been under the interim leadership of former player Richard Wigglesworth following Steve Borthwick’s departure for the top England job. A former loosehead prop, the Aussie spent the greatest chunk of his coaching career with Super Rugby side, ACT Brumbies. Originally joining as an Assistant Coach, McKellar took on the Head Coach mantel in 2018 beginning a five-year tenure in charge.

In that time, he shepherded his side through the inaugural Super Rugby AU competition in 2020, securing second place in 2021 on top of being semi-finalists in 2019 and 2022. Now in charge of a Tigers side looking to rebuild following recent successes and big-name departures – through retirement or club moves – the man from the southern hemisphere today arrives at Sandy Park with a Leicester side sitting seventh in a highly competitive Premiership table and looking for a result on the road.

ONE TO WATCH: JASPER WIESE Rugby World Cup champion Jasper Wiese has been a behemoth of the Tigers pack since his arrival on English soil in the summer of 2020. Joining from United Rugby Championship side Cheetahs, the South African back rower was a relatively unknown talent – he quickly established himself as a threat in the Gallagher Premiership, however. The 28-year-old, born in Upington, has nurtured his talent in the infamous Tigers colours – going on to gain 27 Springbok caps, a world

champion medal, a Premiership title and starts in two prestigious tests against the British and Irish Lions. Known for his uncompromising style, his confrontation of any opposition is commendable. A strong ball carrier and physical tackler, as this season has been confirmed as his last at Welford Road, the man from the Northern Cape will be making a tour of the Premiership away grounds, looking to wreak havoc for each opposition side just one more time.

COMMUNITY UPDATE THE COMMUNITY CHIEFS ARE PLEASED TO BE OFFERING OUR 'THINK LIKE A CHIEF' PROGRAMME FOR THE FIRST TIME. This programme which is funded by Maddy's Mark is designed to give more girls an opportunity to play rugby, as well as talking around the mental health topic throughout. Maddy’s Mark was established to remember Maddy Lawrence and promote positive mental health and wellbeing in young women, through the sport of rugby. Maddy sadly passed away in March 2022, aged just 20, after suffering from a rugby injury, whilst playing for UWE, her university rugby team. Despite a courageous fight in hospital, Maddy tragically died of sepsis, two weeks after her injury. She was bright, loving and sporty, described by friends as a shining light in their lives. In this extraordinarily difficult time, Maddy's Mark take comfort in all the good that Maddy has done in her short life and the many people who were touched by her kindness, generosity, and love. We wish to help continue Maddy’s legacy by forging ahead with the charity, which supports the cause she held closest to her heart, young women’s mental health.

We are trying to build young women's confidence, self-image and self-belief through the values of the rugby community. By focusing on the standards of teamwork, mutual support and fellowship we hope to help young women harness their own boldness and resilience. Why? Because not all battles are fought on the pitch. We have so far delivered to Exmouth Community College as well as Plymstock Academy. We are excited to run this in Torquay Academy in the new year. As part of this programme, it is also great to have Give A Ruck on board. Give A Ruck was developed to help everyone in rugby, from players and coaches to club members and volunteers to become more comfortable in talking about their mental health. Give A Ruck aims to help give these people the necessary tools to raise awareness, signpost to relevant services and to inspire others to talk about their mental health. Seeing the importance in a programme like Maddy's Mark, it is great to also have Give A Ruck helping us with the mental health content in the programme. This means all the girls we deliver to have the best advice regarding mental health as well as the opportunity to consistently take part in rugby over a six-week period.

THE CLUB CAN ANNOUNCE THAT PLAYER AIDON DAVIS IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING TREATMENT IN HIS FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. The back rower announced the news on Wednesday having already told his teammates, coaches and staff at an earlier stage. The South African player is remaining extremely positive in his latest battle – this one away from the field for a change. “I’ve recently received the news that I’ve been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. While still feeling perfectly fit and healthy, I will have to go through chemotherapy and won’t be fit for selection for the next few months. I will continue training as treatment allows and be there for the team, in any way possible.” “Myself and the doctors are very positive about the treatment and the results it will bring. I want to thank my wife for being by my side every step of the way, and my family and friends – especially my Chiefs family, the players, coaching staff, medical staff and everyone in the organisation for being there for me, supporting me and being so understanding.”

“Obviously, this is a tough time for Aidon and his family but fortunately Aidon was smart enough to get his initial concerns checked with the club’s medical staff which has resulted in a swift diagnosis and therefore early and immediate treatment.” “We at the Chiefs are all right behind him in his fight to get 100% well again and I know Aidon is desperate to continue getting into the club and training and partaking in club activities whenever he can.” “He is an incredibly strong and popular character and I know all our supporters will join myself, the staff and players in supporting him wherever and whenever we can.” Everyone at the club is behind Aidon every step of the way – we have no doubt he will confront this battle with the same commendable work ethic and heart he brings

“I’ll be back very soon, better and healthier than ever.” Director of Rugby Rob Baxter explained that the entirety of the rugby department, and the wider organisation, will be there to support Aidon throughout this time.
