WELCOME

Four years ago I came here to do something. The point I wanted to make – the point I feel that all of us, together at the Northcott have made – is that regional theatres, Reps, as they used to be called, can be reinvented quickly and transformed into incredibly creative, exciting places. If they’ve got their mojo they are also amazing value; enlivening, enlightening and enlarging the communities they serve, organisations that really are for the different and the many. It may be hard but it is worth it and it is important. Just look at this autumn’s programme. Don Carlos directed by Gadi Roll with Tom Burke as Posa – and the Northcott as lead producer. Post West End commercial theatre, pre West End shows, a first visit from Wayne McGregor following on from a string of first visits from Kneehigh, Complicite, Matthew Bourne, Gecko – the list goes on; the re-established home produced pantomime, a new, accessible early years Christmas show – Hansel and Gretel by ENT Associates, PaddleBoat. Some people say do less better. We don’t agree. We say do more better. Head in the sky. Feet on the ground. In the brochure you can read

3

about the incredible breadth of work that the Northcott now engages in. The Associates Programme, the IMPACT Programme, our Education and Reach Out Programme, a packed season of comedy and one nighters. Do more better. The great thing is that audiences have come with us on this journey. Turnover has doubled and at the same time average attendance is up from 56% to 63% and the evidence is that it is still climbing. Sitting next to me is Daniel Buckroyd who I am delighted to introduce to you as my successor. The theatre is his now – as well as all of yours of course – and he’s going to do wonderful things in the next few years. He is an exceptional arts leader with a broad and deep skill set who is greatly admired in the profession. Most importantly, he’s a director. He’ll need your help because there is still much to be done. Together you will do so much more, so much better! Very best wishes, Paul Jepson Artistic & Executive Director

ASSOCIATES PROGRAMME THE STORY SO FAR

Our Associates Programme is now in its third year. The programme was designed to support young companies, with a strong local connection, into the midscale theatre network, providing artistic mentorship, production management, education, marketing and sales support. It has already led to the creation of a string of unique productions since its launch in 2016, and there are many more in the pipeline.

The award-winning Le Navet Bête are an Exeter-based troupe of clowns whose high energy, spectacular and hilarious shows have wowed audiences globally. They have staged Dick Tracy at the Northcott and opened Dracula: The Bloody Truth, a riotous show which went on a national tour and is now licensed worldwide.

METTA THEATRE

The inventive and ground-breaking Metta have also made an impact, fusing streetdance, skateboards and rap to bring an acclaimed version of Kipling’s Jungle Book to the Northcott in 2016. The innovative company then added a 21st century twist to another children’s classic in April 2018 with a circus version of Little Mermaid, which casts a strong female lead and a handsome prince in touch with his feminine side. A forthcoming adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows takes the riverbank to the 'hood; In The Willows The Hip Hop Musical opens at the Northcott in February 2019 (see page 29).

PADDLEBOAT THEATRE COMPANY The imaginative children’s theatre company, PaddleBoat – a key player in the theatre’s education and reach out programme – recently staged its delightful tale of imaginary friendship, Margo & Mr Whatsit. A new and immersive co-production of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, for young children and those with additional needs, is in development and will be performed alongside Jack and the Beanstalk this Christmas (see page 28).

ARA

This year sees the addition of the latest partner when Ara, the newly formed company led by director Gadi Roll and stage and TV star Tom Burke, premières Don Carlos which is hoped to be the first of many classical dramas.

IMPACT

BRINGING UNHEARD VOICES TO THE STAGE Our new co-commissioning programme to bring together academics and creatives in devising outstanding new performance inspired by international quality research is now bearing fruit. The pioneering first production, Beyond My Control – a play about epilepsy and the brain – completed a 6-theatre studio tour of the country earlier this year and was seen by 1,200 people. Plans for a bigger tour, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and international dates, are now under way. Taking audiences on a journey of understanding through the condition’s characteristics, it uses verbatim testimonies of lived experiences, bringing unheard voices to a public stage and shining a light on challenging subject matter. Research and Development has already begun on a pipeline of exciting projects covering topics including dementia. The IMPACT programme demonstrates the theatre’s openness to new ideas from the science community and beyond as well as a willingness to engage with difficult and controversial topics. This is an open access scheme. Please email any ideas to creative@exeternorthcott.co.uk

A magnificent tale of passion and power set against the chilling backdrop of the bloody and ruthless Spanish Inquisition.

D

on Carlos is torn apart when his tyrannical father King Philip II seals a peace deal by marrying French noble Elizabeth de Valois, the love of Carlos’ life. The heartbroken heir turns for help to his closest friend, Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, a champion of the oppressed, who questions the monarch's iron rule and becomes an unlikely power broker in the duplicitous court. Schiller’s work is full of Shakespearean echoes and its themes of justice and equality; freedom of expression and conscience; religious bigotry and state persecution are as relevant today as ever. Director Gadi Roll brings his trademark dynamic imagery and haunting soundscapes to Schiller’s masterpiece. This major new revival stars Tom Burke (Strike, War and Peace and The Musketeers) as the Marquis of Posa, and forms part of Exeter Northcott Theatre’s 50th anniversary season.

TUE 20 & RADAMISTO // HANDEL SAT 24 NOVEMBER >7.30pm

PRE/POST SHOW TALKS WED 21 & SAT 24 NOV

Radamisto tells a dramatic story of a royal family in old Armenia, locked in mortal conflict. Thematically, it champions faithfulness and married love, but it also has a fine gallery of moral depravity and intolerance. Peter Whelan conducts, and James Conway directs a new production in Adam Wiltshire’s designs, inspired by the art of early Christian Armenia. Radamisto was one of Handel’s most appreciated operas, not least for its famous aria “Ombra cara”, which stunned audiences and was sung in drawing rooms for decades thereafter. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

GROUPS TALKS

This triple bill features works by Purcell, Carissimi and Gesualdo. Best known is Dido and Aeneas, for which director Sebastian Harcombe promises to conjure a Jacobean night-world, in which a great woman contemplates her ruin.

AGE All Ages Running Times TBC

The priest-composer Giacomo Carissimi made a series of short musical dramas for his Roman audience, depicting scenes from the Bible in which humans wrestle with God. One of the finest is Jonas, or Jonah, which depicts the story of Jonah and the whale. Dancer/ director Bernadette Iglich will make a new piece of drama on this story with Carissimi’s sensuous music. I Will Not Speak showcases music of the prince-murderer-composer Carlo Gesualdo. Tortured by his mortal love affairs and by his intense love for an absent God, Gesualdo was a striking original. Eight singers and eight players will perform some of his most intense madrigals in a landscape of shadows and candlelight. Sung in English, Latin and Italian with English surtitles.

ST MATTHEW PASSION FRI 23 NOVEMBER // BACH >7.30pm As part of this season’s visit, English Touring Opera will present a semi-staged performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at Exeter Cathedral. Tickets for this concert can also be booked through the Exeter Northcott Theatre box office. See page 35 for details. whatson.englishtouringopera.org.uk BOX OFFICE 01392 726363

avid Tomlinson built a career playing a certain type of Englishman – stiff, formal and a bit of a silly ass. He’s best remembered as Mr Banks in Disney’s classic Mary Poppins. But Tomlinson’s real life was just as fascinating as any of the parts he played. His was a life that contained action, adventure and, surprisingly, a certain amount of heartbreak. Above all, the man who portrayed one of cinema’s most famous patriarchs was defined by his relationship with his own father – a remote and eccentric character who was hiding an extraordinary tragicomic secret.

EDUCATION & REACH OUT Education is at the heart of what we do at Exeter Northcott Theatre. From established residencies to schools’ workshops, to our newly re-launched NYC – Northcott Young Company – there are so many opportunities to get involved. We recently saw the highest ever number of young people audition for our Christmas show Jack and the Beanstalk and we can’t wait to welcome more young people this season.

EASTER & SUMMER SCHOOLS

We've loved working with talented young performers in our Easter and summer residencies. Participants spend a week learning more about how a venue such as the Northcott works as well as creating their own piece of theatre from scratch to share with friends and family at the end of the week. Application details for 2019 Easter and Summer Schools will be announced in the New Year.

PAY WHAT YOU DECIDE NORTHCOTT YOUNG We piloted a Pay What You COMPANY Decide ticket offer (PWYD) aimed at non Shakespeare audiences for Filter Theatre and the Lyric’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in May. The idea was to attract new audiences who might not otherwise see this radical, accessible reworking of the play. More than 150 people booked for free then left payment after the show. Feedback from those taking part is being evaluated and we hope to launch similar, targeted, PWYD offers in future so keep an eye on social media and our website.

We are delighted that the Northcott’s Young Company is back! 40 young people are currently enjoying our Saturday classes and we’ll shortly be recruiting for the autumn term. Find out more about how to register by visiting our website. Applications for the autumn term will open early in the summer holidays.

Don Carlos Sat 20 October 2.30pm Jack and the Beanstalk Sat 15 December 2pm AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES Audio described performances provide the audience with a description of the set, the characters, the costume, the scene and the lighting throughout the performance, interspersing with the actors’ dialogue. The information is relayed through a headset that will be given to you on arrival at the theatre. The headsets must be booked when booking your tickets (at no extra cost) and collected from the Box Office before the performance. The Audience Club offers subsidised tickets which can be bought as single tickets or in bundles for the season. The Audience Club is a safe and familiar group supported by regular volunteers to make going to the theatre a great and accessible social activity. The Audience Club is run by Encounter Theatre & Therapy in partnership with Exeter Northcott Theatre and Exeter Phoenix with support from Theatre Alibi. To find out about the current Audience Club season, you can get in touch with our Co-ordinator Amerie Rose by telephone and text on 07421 813 979 or by email at info@AudienceClub.org
