WELCOME I first learned about the Northcott Theatre in a kitchen in North London. Tony Church, the father of a friend of mine, was telling me about all the things he had done in the theatre when he was Artistic Director. He had been - I later realised – the first Artistic Director. It sounded pretty much like a mix of the National, the RSC and the Royal Court – main house Shakespeare, contemporary repertoire, leading edge new writing, laugh out loud comedies, touring through the South West each summer out of the back of a transit van. Incredibly confident, varied, ambitious and in touch. Well, this autumn the Northcott turns fifty and there’s much to celebrate in 2017. We have an education department that is admired. We produce our own work. We have an Associates Programme that is supporting ambitious, talented young companies onto the midscale. We are launching number one tours and collaborating with the University of Exeter to commission inter disciplinary performance inspired by UoE academic research. The theatre is buzzing. As is this season. Award-winning and internationally-acclaimed physical theatre company Gecko are first time visitors with their new show The Wedding. We’ll be co-producing the critically-acclaimed People, Places & Things with Headlong, HOME and The National Theatre. We’ve got The Kite Runner hot on the heels of its extended West End run, and for the festive season, a good oldfashioned Pantomime – oh yes we have! The return of Exeter’s favourite Panto Dame Steve Bennett is the icing on the cake. Speaking of cakes, we’re launching a plea for a thousand knitted cupcakes! We’ll be celebrating the Northcott’s first fifty years and raising funds for those who’ll shape the next fifty on Sunday 12th November at our 50th Anniversary Gala – we’d love to see you there. We’d also like to hear from you, so please send us your memories of the last 50 years. You can write to us, send us an email – memories@exeternorthcott.co.uk , share your thoughts on Facebook, Twitter - #MyNorthcott or fill out a postcard next time you visit us. To get you started, we’re sharing some memories from the Northcott’s archive on the next few pages. Very best wishes, Paul Jepson Artistic & Executive Director

A Wardrobe Ensemble, Royal & Derngate Northampton and Shoreditch Town Hall Co-Production

Wed 27 – Fri 29 September 7.30pm It’s May 1997. Tony Blair has won the election and Katrina and the Waves have won Eurovision. Channel 5 is a month old. No one knows who Harry Potter is. Britain is the coolest place in the world. At the local secondary school it’s a different story. Miss Belltop-Doyle can’t control her year 9s, Mr Pashley has been put in charge of a confiscated tamagotchi and for some unknown reason Princess Anne is attending the Year 11 leavers assembly. Tobias, the German language assistant, watches on. Things can only get better. The show is devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, who have created three Christmas shows for the Bike Shed Theatre and won huge critical acclaim with their production of 1972: The Future Of Sex. Their new show Education, Education, Education uses the company's trademark inventive theatricality and irreverent humour to explore the stories that have shaped our recent political history, and to think about what the future might look like. www.thewardrobeensemble.com Registered Charity No. 1151620

By Frederick Knott

Directed by Alastair Whatley Designed by David Woodhead

Tue 3 – Sat 7 October 7.30pm Wed Green Matinee 2.30pm* Sat Matinee 2.30pm

From the hand of Frederick Knott, author of Dial M Murder, and the producers behind Night Must Fall and Birdsong, comes a major revival of the classic, edge of your seat, thriller Wait Until Dark. Set amidst the social turbulence of 60’s London the play follows the story of Suzy, a blind woman who left alone in her apartment becomes embroiled with a group of conmen hatching an elaborate scam. As the tension notches up, Suzy is left to fend for herself but with the phone line cut dead and the house plunged into darkness, can Suzy outwit the murderous visitors? Wait Until Dark, made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967, is often ranked as one of the top 100 scariest films of all time and this exciting new production reclaims it for the stage. A star cast includes Jack Ellis (Prime Suspect and Bad Girls), Karina Jones and Oliver Mellor (Coronation Street).

Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Play, Conor McPherson’s chilling, modern classic The Weir embarks on a UK tour this autumn to mark its 20th Anniversary year. In a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined.

JINKX MONSOON & MAJOR SCALES

After selling out an often-extended OffBroadway run, an Australian tour and a run at London’s Soho Theatre, RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon is going on tour with The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales. Throughout the 1920's Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed. It’s a vintage cabaret with a twist of drag. Tue 31 October – Sat 4 November 7.30pm Wed Green Matinee 2.30pm* Sat Matinee 2.30pm An intoxicating play about surviving in the modern world. Following a critically-acclaimed, sold-out season at the National Theatre and in London’s West End, People, Places & Things comes to Exeter Northcott Theatre. Emma was having the time of her life. Now she’s in rehab. Her first step is to admit that she has a problem. But the problem isn’t with Emma, it’s with everything else. She needs to tell the truth. But she’s smart enough to know that there’s no such thing. When intoxication feels like the only way to survive the modern world, how can she ever sober up? Written by Duncan Macmillan (1984, Every Brilliant Thing, Lungs) and directed by Headlong Artistic Director Jeremy Herrin (This House, The Nether, Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Bodies), People, Places & Things is designed by Olivier and Tony Award winning designer Bunny Christie (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.)
