WELCOME
This Spring we’re delighted to bring you the very best in live entertainment; with drama, comedy, dance, music and a host of work for families, we’ve truly got something for everyone at the Northcott this season. Watch out for West End hits A Comedy About A Bank Robbery and The Mousetrap; Miles Jupp in the heartwarming new drama The Life I Lead; and Willy Russell directing Stephen Tompkinson in the 40th Anniversary production of Educating Rita. Don’t miss the return of Kneehigh with their hit show Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs); and the hilarious new version of The Three Musketeers from Exeter favourites Le Navet Bête. Plus thought-provoking 80s drama Rita, Sue & Bob Too and the awardwinning new play Rotterdam. If you like your theatre to have a musical flavour, check out the new programme from English Touring Opera, the hilarious all-male production of The Pirates Of Penzance, and the hit Broadway musical based on the muchloved, Oscar-winning film Amélie. And for families, we’re delighted to be collaborating
once again with Metta Theatre on In the Willows, a funny, fast-paced new musical featuring Toad, Ratty, Mole and Badger like you’ve never seen them before! We’ve also got world class dance from Rambert, Richard Alston and BalletBoyz; and a treasure trove of shows for children including Dinosaur World, Room on the Broom, Aliens Love Underpants and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. And I’m looking forward to making my Northcott directorial debut (well, the first time since Witness For The Prosecution in 1990!) with a spine-chilling new adaptation of Henry James’ classic Victorian ghost story, The Turn of the Screw, opening in Exeter before touring the UK. I look forward to seeing you at the theatre soon.

est friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a taste of adult adventure, the three start a fling each of them think they can control. Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play is a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future.
Written when she was just 19, Rita, Sue and Bob Too was an instant hit, later adapted into a much-loved 80s film. It proved as fresh and popular as ever in this new production by Kate Wasserberg, garnering great praise on tour and during its packed-out London run.

ichard Alston has been making dance for 50 years. He will celebrate his half-century with a programme full of his trademark lyrical choreography performed by undoubtedly one of the world’s best dance ensembles. The evening centres around exciting new works by Richard Alston and associate choreographer Martin Lawrance. Alston's Brahms Hungarian is set to the hugely popular Brahms pieces, featuring live solo pianist Jason Ridgway, where the dancers are carried along by fast steps and an abandoned fervour. Detour, Lawrance’s new work is set to Michael Gordon’s pulsing Timber with his customary fast paced style. Proverb, one of Alston’s most telling choreographies is set to the vocals of Steve Reich.

840. A young governess agrees to look after two orphaned children in Bly, a seemingly idyllic country house. But shortly after her arrival, she realises that they are not alone. There are others – the ghosts of Bly’s troubled past. The Governess will risk everything to keep the children safe, even if it means giving herself up to The Others. Years later, confronted by the past she is compelled to account for what actually happened to her and the innocents under her protection..
This new adaptation of Henry James’ iconic tale, which was the original inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, is a masterclass in stage-craft, with captivating performances, deliciously atmospheric set and lighting design and an evocative soundtrack, starring Janet Dibley (Doctors, EastEnders, The Two of Us) and Maggie McCarthy (Dancing on the Edge, Call the Midwife).

Will things go to plan? It’s unlikely. With four actors and over 30 characters this will be their most hilariously chaotic adventure yet! Supported by a top notch band of brothers including long-time co-conspirator (and funny man director) John Nicholson (Peepolykus, BBC Radio 4), internationally renowned choreographer Lea Anderson MBE (The Cholmondeleys) and critically acclaimed set designer Ti Green (Touching the Void Bristol Old Vic/National Tour) this show is set to be the company’s biggest and most riotous to date.

ELIZABETH I ROSSINI
THU 23 MAY >7.30pm
Elizabeth I (Elisabetta, regina d'inghilterra) shows the woman behind the monarch. She had the reputation of a queen who ruled with her head and silenced her heart – but writers and composers remain fascinated with her private life, in particular the rivalry with her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. Rossini’s opera contrasts the private and public spheres of her life, sparkling with vocal fireworks which culminate in a virtuosic showdown between the virgin queen, her councillor, her lover and his wife. The production, featuring Mary Plazas in the title role, is directed by ETO’s General Director James Conway and is the first fully staged professional production of Rossini’s opera to tour the UK. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. BOX OFFICE 01392 726363
