From Exmouth to Newton Abbot to Dawlish back to Exeter and beyond we are now taking theatre making to the young people of the county, encouraging creativity through a series of bespoke schools drama workshops. We are also producing our own work. I’m directing for the first time this season - twice. This is My Body is a wonderful new play about a terrible subject, human trafficking. It doesn’t pull its punches and the young Polish actress who plays it is exceptional. She is a big reason that the play has been recognised by the prestigious AntiSlavery Media Awards. Before that I’m directing Betrayal. It is a fabulous play, funny, touching and incredibly balanced. A play about people breaking out and having what they want and then finding that they still aren’t happy. It is contemporary and sends you out smiling - a very personal play. The first play I directed by Pinter was The Room with Ian Holm, Liz Smith and John Woodvine. Before he came to the preview Harold Pinter sent me a note: tell Mr. Jepson to ignore the pauses. People forget how incredibly funny Pinter is - wickedly so. On all our produced shows we are going to sell a certain number of seats to concession groups at £5 per ticket. We want everyone to be able to see our work. We’ve also got a packed received programme - two musicals, bags of excellent drama, Northern Ballet with their new children’s show, Mark Bruce, Richard Alston and the spectacular Metta Theatre with their 21st Century take on Kipling’s Jungle Book - if you’re aged between 16-24, you could even take part as we search for a community chorus - see page 42 for details. I hope, like me, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Paul Jepson Artistic & Executive Director

Richard Herring Happy Now?
Fri 11 March 7.30pm After years of drifting aimlessly and alone, Richard Herring is now settled down with a wife and a tiny baby. Is he finally happy now? Or does responsibility for the lives of others come with its own terrors? In his twelfth solo stand up show, Richard examines whether we are can ever hope to be or are meant to be truly content. If we were never unhappy would happiness have any meaning? Why do our brains force us to envision the worst possible outcomes even on a day when everything seems fine? How likely is it that Richard’s baby will be skewered by a stalactite of frozen urine falling from a plane and is it really worth him wasting his time thinking about it? Does being happy mean a comedian loses his edge and true belly laughs only come from depression? How much pressure was there on Happy the dwarf to live up to his name? Is there any system that will guarantee us eternal bliss or should we just embrace the fact that life is a vale of tears and our only option is to laugh in its face? www.richardherring.com Tickets: £16 Age: 16yrs+ Running Time: 1hr 30mins

Emma is married to Robert. But for seven years, she’s been having an affair with Jerry, Robert’s best friend.
Betrayal begins at the end of the affair, and pursues an enthralling journey to its very beginnings. As memory reels backwards towards the moment the affair started, the lies tangle into a web of deception. Is Emma betraying her husband? Is Jerry betraying his best friend? Or are they all betraying themselves. Of the countless eternal love triangles written for the stage, few have matched Harold Pinter’s gripping depiction of infidelity – as intricate as a spy novel with its cross and double cross. Smart, darkly funny and full of yearning, this is one of Pinter’s most accessible and riveting plays. www.exeternorthcott.co.uk

This powerful one-woman play, written by Martin O’Brien, directed by Paul Jepson and performed by Agata Jarosz, toured the UK in 2014, including a performance at the St James Theatre in London. It uncovers the shocking reality of human trafficking in the UK, and the failures of the system to adequately respond to and support the victims.
Audience acclaim for the play:
“An immensely powerful portrayal of a young woman’s struggle to face the reality of her situation.” “A profoundly important piece of theatre. Deeply meaningful and thought-provoking with an incredible performance at its core. This needs a wider audience!” 16

Thu 31 March 7pm & Fri 1 April 2.30pm New Perspectives bring three hugely imaginative and funny stories from one of the giants of 20th century British poetry vividly to life in a brand new production for children and family audiences. The Coming of the Kings is a wild retelling of the nativity. Sean, the Fool, the Devil and The Cats is a cautionary tale about eating the wrong person’s stew. The Tiger’s Bones is a brief history of the foolishness of modern man. Ted Hughes had a lifelong passion for nurturing creativity in the young and this dazzling and brilliant collection of short plays for children and families follows in the footsteps of How the Whale Became and The Iron Man. Mon 11 & Tue 12 April 7.30pm Homer’s epic poem is retold in an extraordinary dance theatre production. The King, Odysseus (Christopher Tandy) separated from his family for ten years of brutal war, faces another ten year struggle to return home as a reckless God (Jonathan Goddard) drags him on an epic journey across oceans to strange lands and the darkness beyond. Immortal beauties, shape shifters, monsters and sorcerers both guide and torment the king as he hurtles towards a savage and desperate reunion with his Queen. The cast and creative team that brought you the multi award-winning Dracula present a vision of a broken world, from faded New York pageants to islands of fantasy; brutal seas, battlefields and a gateway to Hades. Set to music ranging from Mozart to Mark Lanegan; Sacred Arias to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and an originally composed score; this Odyssey is of now - contemporary horror and fantasy splintering from ancient myth, the themes universal: how we face our mortality and the driving force of the Gods inside us.

MOZART // Don Giovanni
Wed 25, Thu 26 & Sat 28 May 7.30pm Don Giovanni is one of the best-loved of all operas, with a dramatic story and ravishing music. Part thriller, part comedy, it’s the provocative tale of a womaniser whose conquests come back to haunt him. Is Don Giovanni a hero who defies all authority - or a murderous villain? Whichever way you are pulled, Mozart’s masterpiece is a musical and dramatic whirlwind – from the first bars of the magnificent score to the chilling supernatural conclusion.
Sung in English.
GLUCK // Iphigénie en Tauride Fri 27 May 7.30pm
Vampire-like villains and human sacrifice form a bloodthirsty backdrop to what is one of the most refined and perfect of operas, based on a famous story from Greek myth. By a composer who influenced future generations from Mozart to Wagner, this account of the reunion of Iphigenia and her brother in the aftermath of the Trojan War is an eloquent, heart-wrenching masterpiece.

This West End and Broadway hit is the love story of C.S. Lewis - Oxford don and author of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Screwtape Letters - and American poet Joy Davidman. Lewis is comfortable in his life at Oxford University, smug in his convictions about God and His plan for the world until his fan Joy and her young son enter his life and the bewildered theoretician of love in the abstract finally confronts its direct presence. Following on from its original incarnation as a TV drama then subsequent stage adaptation and finally a film starring Anthony Hopkins, the play has gone on to win multiple awards as well as the film adaptation picking up multiple BAFTA and US awards. Harold Pinter’s Betrayal
Years 5 and 6 – for up to 40 students. We welcome Birmingham Stage Company’s production of David Walliams’s Gangsta Granny in February 2016. From the acclaimed producers of George’s Marvellous Medicine and Horrible Histories, Gangsta Granny tells the story of Ben and his Granny, and the incredible secret they share. Our two-hour practical workshops, running throughout January, will explore through drama and art, how people like Granny are perceived, questioning stereotypes and challenging expectations. For more information and prices visit our website.
As part of our in-house production repertoire, Exeter Northcott Theatre will present Pinter’s Betrayal, directed by Artistic Director, Paul Jepson. To complement this new production, we are excited to offer a series of drama workshops throughout January and February: Pinter Drama Workshop Years 10 and 11 – for up to 30 students (can be adapted for Years 12 and 13). • •
The two hour workshop will encourage students to examine the context of Pinter’s work as well as encouraging a close analysis of a selection of texts through practical exploration. We will work with your students to consider different ways of responding to Pinter’s work with particular emphasis on the depth of sub-text and the scope this gives for different interpretations in performance and direction.

Getting here on foot or by bike We’d like to encourage those who are able to walk or cycle to the Theatre to do so whenever they can. There are several cycle paths and lanes in and around the Theatre and university campus to ensure the safety of cyclists and there is a cycle shelter to the left of the theatre’s front entrance. Getting here by car All car parking is FREE on campus after 6pm Mon - Fri, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, regardless of permit restrictions on signage. All restrictions on parking are lifted for visitors during these times, but please be aware that car parks are pay and display at all other times. Vehicle Routes and Parking The nearest car parks to the theatre are Car Parks C & D, located only a few minutes walk away, and Theatre patrons may park from 5pm if displaying a voucher which the Box Office will issue with your tickets on request. Car Park C, is located next to the INTO Academic Centre at the top of Stocker Road. Entrance to the car park is on North Park Road, opposite the bus stop. Car Park D is located at the end of North Park Road and is just a five minute walk from the theatre. This is a permit holder only car park Mon – Fri until 6pm, please check with the box office if attending a weekday daytime performance.
/ExeterNorthcottTheatre
Stocker Road is open to pedestrians and cyclists only. Vehicles should enter the campus from Prince of Wales Road via Streatham Drive and then The Queen’s Drive, before joining North Park Road and then Rennes Drive (please see map below). The biggest demand for parking at Streatham Campus is expected to be between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Friday during the University term. For this reason we now only schedule the following daytime shows: Green Matinees – please show your support for the environment and use Public Transport to
attend these discounted midweek matinee shows; School Matinees – we advise groups to travel to the theatre by coach for these performances. This map will help you find the car parks. For up to date information about planning your visit please contact the Box Office on 01392 726363, visit our website or check the information we send you with your tickets.
