YOU'LL FIND IT, EASY
You may be surprised to learn not all navigation apps are created equal, but we believe ours is best in class.
Over the next few pages we will endeavour to explain why, and if you are still not convinced, we invite you to try it out for yourself on one of our free UK walks. Why so confident? Well, the guiding principle for our app was that it should be just like having a private tour guide in your pocket. Other apps use simple GPX files to create routes, which are linear, generic and sometimes misleading. When using the Headwater Navigation App, every turn, junction and point of interest will have been added by our experts, to be enjoyed by you.
And because the app instructions are now spoken, we encourage you to take a walk (or ride) on the wild side by turning off the screen and letting the audio cues guide you. Leaving you hands free and your eyes able to linger on the amazing scenery instead of locked on the screen, safe in the knowledge that, with our brilliant navigation app leading the way, you cannot get lost.
“Got to grips with the app on the first day and we never looked back. It made things simple—brilliant!”
DAVID HALL, CYCLING THE HEEL OF ITALY
CLEAR AND FRIENDLY GUIDANCE
There's no drawing lines on a map and ‘away you go’, attitude here at Headwater. Our approach to navigation is similar to a certain northern tea company – it's done proper!
Our (super) human Nav App team live and breathe navigation –and can spot an incline or gravel section from a mile away. One honed their craft as a professional road cyclist, while the other has decades of experience teaching navigation and mountain biking. For both walking and cycling trips, the team will pore over the route, selecting from the many available options those that deliver the best experience, and taking pride in then writing the clearest possible series of instructions (called cues) with the interesting and helpful detail of a friendly tour guide.
NAV APP SUPPORT
HELPFUL HOW-TO GUIDES
We provide easy to follow how-to guides for both downloading and using the app. The step-by-step guides are written in plain English and take you through accessing your routes, using the app and finishing your route. There is also a useful Q&A section. For example, did you know the app doesn’t use your mobile data while navigating – really!
“Did you know our app doesn’t use your mobile data while navigating?”
WHY OUR NAVIGATION APP IS BETTER THAN GPX
Customers often request GPX files, but we assure them that using our app's navigation is better than the 'shortest calculated route' for several reasons: Firstly, GPX files follow the straightest line from A to B, and the waypoints build up to an inferior route. Additionally, GPX devices re-route automatically, meaning you may miss out on an interesting viewpoint or more scenic path – which are, after all, a big part of our holidays. Finally, simple GPX routes do not account for elevation changes or terrain — both of which affect difficulty. In contrast, our app's routes are designed to align with the activity level of your holiday.
In short, our app routes are hand-crafted by passionate walkers and cyclists, to achieve the best possible holiday experience. However, you could always use your GPX device to track the route and record your achievements for posterity.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE OUR APP
SPOKEN DIRECTIONS
You haven’t gone on holiday to stare at your screen. With our audio directions (cues) you can put your phone in your pocket or bag and simply enjoy the views as you meander along the way. Just listen out for the next cue expertly talking you through an upcoming turn. Free from a handset and untethered from the screen; now it really does feel like you are on holiday.
FASCINATING THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE WAY
Our app doesn’t just provide directions, it is also a repository of useful information about the route. We call these ‘Points of Interest’; which is a rather formal way of saying ‘fascinating things to see’ along the way, things you may have walked or ridden right by otherwise. Such as a viewpoint, or a site of historical significance, amongst others. We love researching and sharing these gems, and customers tell us they really add to their holiday experience.
2 3
YOU'LL NEVER GET LOST AGAIN
Losing your way really isn't much fun. We've all been there — poring over a confluence of orange lines on the OS map, usually in pouring rain or scorching sunshine, with the slow dawning realisation that you should have taken that right fork three miles back! Fortunately, with the Headwater App, getting lost is a thing of the past. If you do happen to stray off route, the App quickly lets you know, allowing you to correct your course straight away.
4
ALWAYS ACCURATE AND UP TO DATE
We are constantly in touch with local partners and on the rare occasions where there are updates to our routes we simply ‘push’ them out to the app and you will receive them straight away. Simply hit the update button when on the hotel wifi and there you go. It doesn’t happen often, but with extremes of weather we are always mindful of route conditions changing.
“Our first time using a navigation app and we found it made the whole experience very comfortable.”
MR DAFFARN, CUSTOMER 2023
APP ROUTES TRY THE APP ON OUR FREE UK SCENIC WALKS
If, like us, you enjoy being active, we're offering you the chance to enjoy a series of our UK walks for free. And the best part? They're all available on our Navigation App! All the walks are graded levels 1 to 2 and range from five miles, and all have convenient start points. To access them, simply scan the QR code below, sign up for our newsletter in order to receive updates on new trips, news, and offers, and then follow the easy to follow instructions to download our curated collection. Enjoy your walk!
MOBILE DATA IS NOT REUIRED
Unless you decide to take a detour and request a re-route (yes, it can do that), no mobile data is used when navigating using our app. We recommend downloading the app and routes via wifi before you go on holiday, but the navigation itself uses radio satellite GPS. This works without needing internet connection or mobile signal, and because it uses satellites it works perfectly even in remote locations, keeping you on track all the way.

OUR NEW CHARITY PARTNER
MOVING PEOPLE FORWARD
We are proud to announce a charity partnership with World Bicycle Relief, a global nonprofit that empowers people living in rural regions by enabling access to reliable transportation. Working with communities across the world, WBR has created a network providing a ordable bicycles, allowing vital access to health care, education and economic opportunities. In Uganda, 42 per cent of the population currently lives below the poverty line and reliable transport is a crucial yet scarce resource. But through the distribution of their durable Bu alo Bicycles, World Bicycle Relief has created a lifeline for many, o ering a viable mode of transport in areas where walking long distances has previously been the only option. What drew us to support them was how providing the custom-built bike was not the end point, but the vehicle for continuing positive change.
Our commitment to World Bicycle Relief
In 2025, we’ve committed to purchasing fty Bu alo Bicycles, which are speci cally designed for tough terrains and built to last. ese bikes enable school children, community healthcare workers, entrepreneurs and families in Uganda easier access to critical services. anks to WBR’s holistic approach and long term support, each bike will continue to provide life-changing assistance for years to come. In addition, as a team that's 80 per cent female, we were particularly moved by their focus on empowering entrepreneurial women and helping girls to access education. Our goal for the upcoming year is to raise £12,000 and positively impact the lives of over one thousand women and girls in Uganda. When you book with us in 2025, we’ll make a donation on your behalf to World Bicycle Relief.
“Envision a world where bicycles improve healthcare and education outcomes, and broaden economic opportunities, so individuals and communities can thrive.”
MISSION STATEMENT, WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF
SUSTAINABILITY
At Headwater, we believe travel can and should be a force for good. As a certified B Corp, we’re dedicated to reducing our environmental impact by measuring and sharing the carbon footprint of our trips, partnering with local operators to minimise waste, and supporting innovative efforts to restore ecosystems. Rest assured, when you choose us, you’re choosing a holiday that makes a difference — for people, places, and the planet. Learn more about our Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan at headwater.com/sustainability
CARBON MEASUREMENT
We can’t escape the fact that travel leaves a footprint; however, we can do everything in our power to make ours smaller. That’s why we’ve carefully measured the CO2e emissions generated per person, per day for each of our trips, and now display these figures on the trip pages on our website. This is a game changer. Having these figures not only helps us identify areas where we can make meaningful carbon reductions but also empowers you to make more informed travel choices.
REWILDING
Since 2021, Headwater and sister company, Exodus Adventure Travels, have worked with Rewilding Apennines to support nature restoration initiatives in the Italian Apennines. We are committed to rewilding 100 square metres for every passenger and five years on we’re proud to have supported the rewilding of 651 hectares, almost the equivalent size of Gibraltar. We’ve also assisted in planting 120 fruit trees, removed 6,075m of barbed wire and hosted community events to promote the benefits of rewilding.
WE ARE CERTIFIED B CORP
VOLUNTEER DAYS
This year, our colleagues joined Adventure Tours UK and rangers from the Clwydian Range AONB to plant 150 trees in Moel Famau Country Park, in an effort to promote biodiversity, reduce water temperatures for species like salmon, and mitigate soil erosion. Other team members volunteered their time with the Blue Marine Foundation’s Wild Oyster Project, to monitor the health of key oyster nursery sites in Conwy Bay that aim to improve water quality and boost marine habitats.
REDUCING OUR IMPACT
We work with local operators and hotels who share our commitment to reducing waste and protecting the environment. Our partners actively minimise their impact by cutting down on energy and water use, reducing waste, and recycling wherever possible. We also encourage accommodations to avoid single-use plastics, offering alternatives like refillable water stations and reusable containers. By supporting locally sourced goods and services, our suppliers help sustain local economies and reduce their carbon footprint.
As part of Exodus Travels, we’re extremely proud to have earned our B Corp status in 2024. This global stamp of approval recognises we are a purpose-driven company, dedicated to continuous improvement and becoming ‘even better’ in terms of our social and environmental impact, using travel as a force for good.
