Can you believe Headwater is 40 this year?! What an incredible milestone to achieve and we will certainly be celebrating it with you throughout the year. 1985 was when ‘A Room with a View’ was released on the big screen, Live Aid lled your small screens and ‘Dancing in the Street’ crackled from your hi . In this day and age of short termism, working somewhere that has such a history is something I am very proud of and it is a feeling shared by the whole team. Now o ering over 300 award-winning holidays in more than 30 countries, Headwater all began when our founders sat at their kitchen table to plan a canoeing trip down the Loire, an itinerary we’re pleased to have recently relaunched especially for our 40th year! Many of you have travelled with us since 1985 and we would love to hear your stories and see your pictures, so please do share them with us on social media using the #headwater (or simply email them to us) we do read every one. But rst, please enjoy our new brochure which is the culmination of four decades of active holiday experience and decide where you would like to celebrate with us.

BY TRAIN
Going by rail is a great, environmentally friendly way to travel. We're pleased to offer train travel where you see this sign.
On our mixed activity holidays, where some days are spent biking, there is the option to upgrade to an electric bike (above left) or it is already included (above right).
Our itinerary bar gives a snapshot of your holiday. For hotel to hotel holidays we show where you visit or stay each night, giving the daily walking distance. For centre-based holidays, we have highlighted a suggested itinerary from the optional walks that are available. Comprehensive day by day itineraries and options are given in the trip pages on our website.
Our maps show where you stay overnight and give an overview of the route /places you visit. The inset map puts the region into context.
What’s challenging for one person can be leisurely for someone else, but while it’s not possible to be precise about how easy or difficult an activity will be, our activity ratings can offer a practical guide as to what to expect. When assigning an activity level to a holiday, we consider factors such as gradient and length of walk, as well as the terrain, route conditions, and location.
Suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy, enjoys the occasional weekend walk. Holidays may involve short, steeper sections or gentler, but longer ascents/descents - be prepared for altitude changes of up to 400m. A head for heights is not necessary. For anyone looking for longer walks and is confident with daily ascents/descents of up to 700m. You need to be able to navigate via the app or map. Some sections may be on uneven terrain where scrambling is required. A head for heights may be required on some routes. Fitness is important as you can expect full day walks, including up to 1,000m ascents/ descents and an ability to navigate by map and app. Where applicable, experience of walking in mountains is important as is a head for heights. Some scrambling likely. Age 12+.
1+ PLUS TRIPS
DUAL LEVELS
Plus trips have small sections of the route that are more challenging than the overall grading. Dual levels signify a choice of routes at either level . You can choose which level route to walk on a daily basis.
Full day walks, factoring ascents/ descents up to 1200m, high altitudes, longer distances, climate and remoteness. Trekking experience desirable, but not vital if confident of physical condition and navigating by app or map. Scrambling or challenging elements are likely. Age 12+.

We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.
Unless stated otherwise during the booking process or in the full terms and conditions, the following applies:
DEPOSIT
You will be asked to pay a deposit at the time of booking of at least £400 per person/25% of the booking value (whichever is the greater). You will be advised of your deposit at the time the booking is made and/or confirmed. You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and non-refundable items; your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process. Please note that for certain travel arrangements the deposit may be higher than those shown.
FINAL BALANCE
We will invoice you for the remainder of the cost of your holiday, which must be paid prior to 90 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 90 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking.
MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR HOLIDAY
A standard amendment fee of £50 per person applies to any changes to the holiday due to the complex nature of our booking processes. Please contact Headwater as soon as possible if you wish to make a change to your existing booking, wish to change to a different tour or wish to change departure date. We will always endeavour to assist with the requested change, but this is subject to availability and payment may need to be made for non-refundable costs (for example from airlines) and other fees may also be applicable.
You may cancel your tour at any time by providing written communication from the lead booker. As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will retain your deposit and will apply other cancellation charges as shown below.
Please note, however, that for certain travel arrangements, the cancellation charge may be higher than those shown; please ask your sales consultant for full details of cancellation charges at time of booking.

As a Headwater customer you may have rights under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018 where your booking amounts to a package holiday. These are detailed here: www.headwater.com/ key-rights. Full terms and conditions apply to your booking and can be found here: www.headwater.com/all/book/conditions. This link also includes information on our Privacy Policy and our Data Protection Commitment.
IF WE CHANGE OR CANCEL YOUR BOOKING
We plan the arrangements for your tour many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor. WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE (AS OUTLINED IN THE FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS ON OUR WEBSITE) OCCURS, YOU WILL HAVE THE CHOICE OF EITHER:
a) Accepting the change; or b) Accepting a replacement tour from us of equivalent or similar standard and price (at the date of the change), if we are able to offer you one; or c) Cancelling your tour, in which case you shall receive a full refund of all monies paid. Some of our holidays are group holidays and require a certain number of participants to operate; we include details of normal group sizes on our website. In the unlikely event that a holiday does not reach the normal minimum, we may be forced to cancel the tour; a decision will be made as early as possible and not later than four weeks before departure. We reserve the right to confirm holidays on numbers lower than the minimum indicated and occasionally we may exceed the normal maximum. If at the time of booking your holiday is not guaranteed, we strongly recommend that you do not make any non-refundable or non-changeable travel arrangements.
ABTA PROTECTION
We will provide you with financial protection for package holidays you buy from us that do not include travel by air by way of a bond held by ABTA. We are a member of ABTA; membership number Y0751. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct.

All holidays advertised in this brochure are operated by Exodus Travels Limited, trading as Headwater Holidays, a member of the Travelopia Group of Companies. Registered number 1150160. Registered Office: Origin One, 108 High Street, Crawley, West Sussex, RH10 1BD.
Our aim is to provide holidays that are unbeatable for choice and flexibility. On the trip pages we feature ‘land only’ itineraries but we can book your flights, ferry or train tickets and add on any city breaks or extra nights’ accommodation to create your perfect holiday.
All accommodation we use has been inspected and classified by the authorities of the relevant countries. As there is no direct British equivalent of many classifications, the broad expression ‘hotels’ refers to all the different types of accommodation we use, from friendly family-run B&B and country inns to luxury hotels (where is the country’s official hotel rating).
Headwater’s hotel ratings are provided to give you guidance on the relative standard of the hotel you will be staying in. In most occasions this will match the official star rating of the hotel, however, if we feel it necessary Headwater will adapt a rating to what we believe is fair. These ratings are reviewed regularly to ensure their accuracy and relevance.
PLEASE NOTE: In Europe when requesting a room for three people either a double or twin room with an extra bed is often provided, which may be cramped.
• Single rooms (even if you’ve paid a supplement) sometimes just offer privacy, and are often of a lower standard than doubles or twins. When requesting a room with twin beds in Austria, Italian/Austrian border region, Croatia, Germany or Switzerland a double bed frame with two single mattresses and separate bedding are the norm. Some facilities, including swimming pools may not be available for early and late season holidays. This is at the hotel’s discretion and subject to last minute change and, as such, we will endeavour to make you aware whenever possible.
Please see our website (using the link on the individual trip pages) for full details of the accommodation on each trip.
These include accommodation (and meals where specified on our website), but not the cost of travel between airport/station and hotel. Additional travel/transfers can be added for an additional cost, your travel consultant can assist with this, please ask at the time of booking.
CHILDREN’S
We can often offer prices for children, including infants (over 1 and under 12 on the date of the outward travel) when sharing a double/twin room with two adults or two full fare paying passengers. Please contact us for details and prices.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RATINGS
Customer satisfaction ratings relate to holidays taken in the period Oct 2023 - Sept 2024 but may include holidays prior to this period.
FOREIGN
Our holidays are run in adherence with the travel advice provided by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). For more information on security, local laws, plus passport and visa information, see travelaware. campaign.gov.uk/ Keep informed of current travel health news by visiting travelhealthpro.org.uk/
To help you choose a holiday that best suits your level of fitness, all our holidays are given an activity level rating, see page 10 for details.
Should you require a Headwater bike for any extra nights booked in your holiday region (either before, after or in the middle of your holiday) then an additional charge will apply, please ask your sales consultant at the time of booking. There is a legal minimum age of 14 years to hire an e-bike across much of Europe, however, this is ultimately at the discretion of our supplier partners and as such you may be required to sign a waiver covering their usage by children aged between 14-18 years.
The latest requirements for wearing cycling helmets in the European countries stated are:
Italy Mandatory for all children under 14 years
France Mandatory for all children under 12 years
Spain Mandatory for all cyclists
Portugal Mandatory for all cyclists using an e-bike
Austria Mandatory for all children under 12 years
Slovenia Mandatory for all children under 15 years
Croatia Mandatory for all children under 16 years
Sweden Mandatory for all children under 15 years
Slovakia Mandatory for all children under 15 years and all cyclists when not in a city
In several countries cycling helmets are a legal requirement but even where they are not, we strongly recommend that all customers wear helmets while on one of our cycling tours. You are expected to bring your own helmet as we do not facilitate the hiring of helmets. We recognise this may be an inconvenience to some, however, the reason for not hiring helmets is that no one can guarantee their integrity from one hire to the next until they are put to the ultimate test - We will not compromise on your safety. Hiring or purchasing a helmet at your destination is at the customers’ own discretion. If you decide to hire or purchase a helmet at your destination Headwater cannot be held responsible for the suitability, condition, or any issues or problems with helmets or other protective headwear, nor can we guarantee the availability.
If you choose to ignore our advice to wear a helmet or other protective headwear you understand that you do so at your own risk and that such action may affect the validity of your travel insurance. Cycling of all kinds has its dangers and accidents can happen from time to time. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for the riding you are going to undertake.
Note that if you do not have a helmet in countries where it is mandatory, you will not be allowed to take part in any cycling element, which may mean that you are not able to continue with the tour and Headwater will not be responsible for any costs you incur as a result.
Please note that the itineraries shown on the holiday pages are for general guidance only, and we reserve the right to change these subject to local weather conditions etc.

The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start from Nov 2024 for all non-EU citizens. This means it will affect all British Nationals. The required photograph and fingerprint collection is likely to result in delays, certainly initially, and we advise you to allow extra time to clear passport control. Please visit travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en for more information.
Then, in mid-2025 Europe aims to introduce the ETIAS, essentially an electronic visa, which all British nationals will need to apply for directly. It will be valid for 3 years or until date of passport expiry (whichever comes first). Please visit travel-europe.europa.eu/ etias_en for more information.
At Headwater, we believe travel can and should be a force for good. We seek to ensure that everything we do to create and run our trips not only reduces any negative impacts on natural ecosystems but proactively seeks to support restoration and regeneration. Learn more about rewilding and our other initiatives at headwater.com/sustainability.
Since 2021, Headwater and our sister company, Exodus Adventure Travels, have worked with Rewilding Apennines to support nature restoration initiatives in the Italian Apennines. The holistic approach of rewilding allows nature the space to regenerate diverse ecosystems. This innovative work is creating five nature corridors to provide safe passage between national parks for wildlife, such as the endangered Marsican brown bear.
We are committed to rewilding 100 square metres for every one of our passengers and five years on we’re proud to have supported the rewilding of 651 hectares, almost the equivalent size of Gibraltar. To get to this stage, we have supported forest regeneration and encouraged a shift in perspectives to promote the peaceful coexistence of wildlife within local communities. Additionally, in support of their ‘bear smart community’ initiatives we have assisted in the planting of 120 fruit trees, the removal of 6,075m of barbed wire, and the purchase of 14 bear-proof bins. We also helped to organise three community events promoting the benefits of rewilding.
We can’t escape the fact that travel leaves a footprint; however, we can do everything in our power to make ours smaller. That’s why we have measured the CO2e generated per person, per day for each trip, and these figures are now displayed on the website. This work helps us to understand where we can make real reductions in emissions and allows you to make informed travel decisions.
