The Newtown Car show June 20th, 2015 | Newtown, Connecticut

entertained a car show that was simply amazing, elegant, and full of hyperexotics!

I

t probably had the most hyperexotics we have ever seen in one place... P1, LaFerrari, Huayra, Enzo, and those are just the beginning of the list of cars in attendance. In addition to being a static car show for a charity for kids with disabilities, it was a cruise. Approximately 50 cars ranging from Mercedes to Pagani drove each child to a meeting point to make their dream come true. The true showstoppers were the Enzo and LaFerrari! Both in Ferrari Yellow were an amazing pair. The LaFerrari, which debuted back in 2013, of which 499 will be made, has taken Ferrari owners aback. It is the fastest road car ever created by Ferrari, and it’s a hybrid… What?? That’s right. You read that correctly! Thanks to innovational advances in design and construction. To be more descriptive, they have made drastic changes in traction, dampening controls, brakes, and tires.

FERRARI ENZO mclaren p1

Let’s not forget to mention the hybrid technology integrated with the combination of the V12 engine. The HY-KERS system is what allows the electric motor to run in sync with the entire structure. The proper use of the electric motor at low revs allows the combustion engine to focus more on performance output at higher revs. This is truly a match made in heaven between electric and gas engines. Unlike its older, the Enzo is all gas performance. A V-12 with 660 HP, is a true sports car! With only 400 made back in 2002, some go for as far as $3.2 million dollars, so it’s a rarity to see one of these at a car show especially matching its successor!

lamborghini aventador

Some of the other cars in attendance were “The King” Pagani Huayra owned by Sparky 18888 on Instagram and their beater, which is a Lamborghini Aventador, Murcielago SV and Ford GT (S), yes! There were over half a dozen of them; Ultimate Aero SSC, and Mosler GTR were also in attendance. It was absolutely an awesome show for an awesome cause! « Images and article © Copyright Exotic Auto Couture Magazine

C

laiming the title of the most potent DB9 yet devised, by virtue of its uprated 6.0-litre V12 engine which now boasts 547 PS – the DB9 GT makes its public debut as part of Aston Martin’s impressive presence at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The new sports car appears as Aston Martin also unveils a raft of colour, trim and equipment enhancements across its sporty Vantage and luxurious Rapide S model lines. Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “The arrival of 16 Model Year (16MY) cars, as well as the addition of the sophisticated DB9 GT, gives us our most compelling sports car line-up to date as we continue to build our strongest ever global offering.”

DB9 GT – timeless style redefined Since their debut in the early 1950s, the ‘DB’ models offered by Aston Martin have been synonymous with sophisticated grand touring and thrilling sports car performance. In the tyre tracks of DB4, DB5, DB6 and DB7, today’s DB9 GT continues that distinguished tradition of luxury, excitement and style with a raft of engineering, equipment and styling developments calculated to make this the very best of what DB9 can be. Fundamental to the new model’s unique appeal is its uprated 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine, which is capable of generating 547 PS at 6750 rpm, and 620 Nm of torque at 5500 rpm.

The all-alloy, quad overhead cam, 48-valve 5,935 cc front mid-mounted V12 is mated to the proven rear mid-mounted Touchtronic II six-speed transmission with electronic shiftby-wire control system. It carries the British luxury sports car maker’s core GT offering from rest to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 183 mph. The independent double wishbone suspension all round continues to deliver secure handling while the three-stage Adaptive Damping System (ADS) offers distinct Normal, Sport and Track modes for the broadest possible breadth of dynamic characteristics. However power is only part of the story, as the new Aston Martin also includes important and far-reaching equipment changes which underline its position as the best DB9 to date. Most notable among the interior equipment updates is the arrival of the AMi II touch-sensitive Aston Martin infotainment system. While AMi debuted on the range-topping Vanquish at its launch, AMi II offers a revised menu structure which makes using the system even more user-friendly. Building on the system launched in the Vanquish, the DB9 GT’s AMi II infotainment package sees key improvements made in a number of areas including text message integration, vehicle status information and extended background themes for greater personalisation.

Century of Speed Next Up at Collector Car Showcase Will Feature Alco-6 “Black Beast Racer”, BMW CSL “Batmobile”, Sebring Sprite and Ralt RT41, Among Others | OYSTER BAY, NY

C

ollector Car Showcase (www.collectorcs.com), the only museum/showcase devoted to automotive memorabilia, Petroliana, and vintage cars in the metropolitan New York area, has announced that its next exhibit “Century of Speed -- 100 Years of Racing and Competition Cars” will debut on June 6. This celebration will be on display through July at the 18,000-square-foot facility located at 85 Pine Hollow Road (aka Route 106) on the southern approach to this historic North Shore Long Island Gold Coast hamlet.

The new exhibit will succeed “American Muscle Cars”, currently on display, and has Teachers Federal Credit Union as a principal sponsor. The Petroliana museum, as car aficionados liken it, is open to the public daily from Tuesday-Saturday. It will feature an eclectic mix of competition race cars that have national and historic significance. A number of the cars displayed have been raced, owned, and restored right here on Long Island. Vintage race cars from 1908 to today can be seen at any one time during the course of the exhibition, from a mix of 30-40 being rotated

in, according to Collector Car Showcase founder David Jacobson. This gathering of international competition racers will salute the past century of auto racing. Diverse offerings from Formula race cars, historic stock cars, vintage road racing, midgets, drag cars to open wheel road course racers will be on display.

Among the featured vehicles to be displayed

Ralt RT 41 Mill Neck, LI resident Bobby Brown had an active career racing worldwide beginning in 1960, before taking a hiatus and then resumed in 1990 racing SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Nationals with a Ralt RT4. He was named 2012 Sports Car Vintage Association (SVRA) driver of the year. The Ralt RT 41 is the only one in the US with a Cosworth BDA 1600cc engine. BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” Competition Car 1936 | Chevrolet Coach #3K. Owned and driven by LI-based Mousey Kempster.

The Alco-6 “Black Beast Racer”

1959 | Offyette Quarter Midget Race Car

Built in 1909 by the American Locomotive Company in Providence, RI, for $6,000, its sheer physical presence resembling a veritable auto locomotive is the car’s most universal attraction. It has competed in 15 major auto races, and was a two-time winner of the Vanderbilt Cup, which it won on LI; the first Indianapolis 500, two Elgin Trophy races and one American Grand Prix. La Bête Noire or the Black Beast as it is known in France, is now owned by Howard Kroplick of East Hills, LI. The 6-cylinder engine is capable of driving 120 mph, and at high speeds its chains augment the feeling of terror.

1956 | Ford Stock Car Built and driven by Marty Himes of Bay Shore, NY, has a rich LI racing history that includes Freeport Stadium, Islip and Riverhead Speedways. 1954 | Jaguar XK-120M This road race competition car was built for SCCA Competition by David Jacox and raced extensively in the Northeastern US.

American Sebring Mark 2 Restored sympathetically by Tony and Robert Giordano of New York City, the early 1961 Austin-Healey Sprite Mark 2, was an early race participant in local -- Bridgehampton, Thompson, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock and Pocono -- venues under the imprimatur of the South Shore Sports Car Club & Beer Drinking Society, since merged into the Eastern Motor Racing Association.

Mclaren Moments to honour famous race-winners at Goodwood Festival of Speed • McLaren ‘Moments’ honour a number of the iconic names to have raced for McLaren over the last 50 years • Comprehensive collection of McLaren models on display, statically and dynamically • Recently announced three tier model range all represented with commissions by McLaren Special Operations • To read more about the McLaren ‘Moments’ visit: cars.mclaren.com/featu red-articles/flat-out-and-fearless.html

T

his weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will see a collection of McLaren models, displayed statically at McLaren House, adjacent to the famous Goodwood House, and in the Supercar Paddock prepared by McLaren Special Operations (MSO). The bespoke arm of McLaren Automotive has prepared models from the Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series, the three newly-announced model tiers. Each of these celebrate this year’s Festival of Speed ‘Flat-out and Fearless’ theme, highlighting a milestone or ‘moment’ from the history of McLaren, and honouring some of the legendary drivers who have driven for the team over the years. The Ultimate Series is represented by the McLaren P1™, prepared by MSO, with inspi-

ration drawn from the patriotic French livery of the helmet worn by four-time Formula 1 world champion, Alain Prost. Colour-matched to the famous design, the carbon fibre bodywork of the Prost-themed McLaren P1™ is white with blue graphics and red highlights. Representing the Heritage division of MSO is one of the rarest McLaren roadcars ever built, the McLaren F1 GT. Kindly loaned to McLaren for display at Goodwood, chassis #58F1GT is one of only three examples, designed and built to homologate the McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ for GT racing during the 1997 season. The livery echoes the famous monochrome design of the Formula 1 team during the late 1990s, driven to back-to-back world titles by Finnish racing driver Mika Hakkinen in 1998 and 1999. The Super Series models at McLaren House honour one of the most successful racing partnerships of the 1960s; that of Denny Hulme and the company’s founder Bruce McLaren. The pairing enjoyed success together in Formula 1 and the Can-Am series, which became known as the ‘Bruce and Denny Show’ as a result of their dominance. Denny Hulme is celebrated with the design of the limited-run 675LT. The Formula 1 and Can-Am champion’s iconic helmet design is the inspiration for the livery with two black stripes, running front to rear, over contrasting Silica White bodywork. Yellow tinted headlamp lenses echo Hulme’s visor.

McLaren P1

McLaren F1 GT

The 650S Spider completes the model line-up on static display within McLaren House. As the core model in the Super Series, it is fitting that this honours the founder of the team, Bruce McLaren. Finished in the iconic heritage McLaren Orange to match his M7A Formula 1 car in which he claimed the first Formula 1 win for the team in 1968, at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The McLaren F1 GTR victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 is the subject of the fifth and final ‘McLaren Moment’, and the two models on public display in the Supercar Paddock pay homage to the two podium finishers. The limited edition 650S Le Mans is inspired by the McLaren F1 GTR, #01R, driven by Yannick Dalmas, JJ Lehto and Masanori Sekiya to overall race victory.

Finished in Sarthe Grey, the development example of the coupe-only model, named ‘XP1’, includes a roof-mounted snorkel, front wing louvres and a wheel design which draw inspiration from the iconic race winner. Lining up alongside the 650S Le Mans will be the McLaren P1™ GTR, wearing the iconic yellow and green livery reminiscent of McLaren F1 GTR chassis #06R, which finished third at the hands of British trio Derek Bell, Justin Bell and Andy Wallace. The two models will be joined by the new McLaren 570S which makes its global dynamic debut on the famous Goodwood Hill over the course of the weekend. « Images and article © Copyright McLaren Automotive

BESPOKE CARBON FIBER ATELIER VITESSE | AUDESSUS DÉBUTS Boutique carbon fiber atelier Vitesse | AuDessus, manufacturer of bespoke automotive pieces, announces its launch worldwide | Bethesda, Maryland

V

itesse | AuDessus, (or “Superior Speed” in French), has just launched its services globally. The company handcrafts bespoke carbon fiber exteriors, interiors, components and monocoques for the world’s most exciting and exclusive automotive machines. Using the best materials available and employing cutting-edge technologies, Vitesse | AuDessus produces one-off parts which meet, and often exceed, OEM standards. “Our clients have already selected the very best in their lives,” says Vitesse | AuDessus CEO Stefany Sanchez. “Everything they own is a reflection of their unique taste: from their home, yacht or jet all the way down to their cufflinks. So why should they accept a supercar or exotic vehicle that is no different than the one in their neighbor’s private garage? Thus, the challenge we were presented with was, how do we make something that is already incredibly rare, sexy and exciting even rarer, even sexier and even more exciting? The answer? We adorn every inch of it in handcrafted carbon fiber.”

Vitesse | AuDessus offers full carbon fiber body OEM solutions for top-of-the-range extreme machines like the Bugatti Veyron, McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918, Lamborghini Aventador and many others. “At Vitesse | AuDessus we provide our clients with the opportunity to tell a better story,” explains Sanchez. To that end, the company encourages its clients to become engaged in the planning and creative process: supercar owners are furnished with the latest 3D renderings and physical samples to help them establish their personal mandate, and Vitesse | AuDessus’s creations conform or diverge from OEM standards accordingly. This novel ‘Saville Row experience’ offers Vitesse | AuDessus clients a selection of weaves, colors and final finishes; after every seam is planned, each piece is meticulously fabricated and finished by hand. The company also carries out the installation with an onsite visit, where feasible. Carbon fiber exteriors typically range in price from $100k-$200k; bespoke pieces for Bugatti Veyron, Mclaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari and Ferrari Enzo may carry a premium over that. «

Porsche finishes production of the 918 Spyder Porsche super sports car with hybrid drive reaches its limited edition volume of 918 units | Atlanta

T

his week, the 918 Spyder has completed a remarkable journey. After 21 months of production, the final Porsche 918 Spyder came off the assembly line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen right on schedule. But the legacy of this technology pioneer will reach far beyond its production time. Future generations of sports cars will benefit directly from innovations found in the 918 Spyder. The 918 Spyder was systematically developed to be a performance hybrid with plug-in technology. The hybrid super sports concept car made its debut at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show where it was met with overwhelming approval. In the summer of 2010, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG gave the green light for its production development. When the car was launched to the market in late 2013, the 918 Spyder represented a continuation of a series of super sports cars in Porsche history. The 904 Carrera GTS, the 959, the 911 GT1 and the Carrera GT were technology pioneers and stood among the ultimate sports cars of their respective decades. In 1963, for example, Porsche created a steel and polymer body for the 904 Carrera GTS that served as a prime example of how to unite stability and lightweight design. In 1986, the 959 successfully introduced an electroni-

cally-controlled all-wheel drive system to the sports car world. Ten years later, the 911 GT1 paved the way for implementing carbon-fiber technology in production vehicles. In 2003, the Carrera GT made its debut as the first production vehicle whose monocoque and subframe were made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). More so than any of its predecessors, the 918 Spyder is now providing a strong push for the advanced development of technologies for the sports cars of the future. The key technology is a drive concept which combines a high-performance combustion engine with two electric motors; its ingenious operating strategy is one of the unique aspects of the 918 Spyder. It considers the various requirements ranging from an efficiency-oriented driving profile to maximum performance. In doing so, it provides important know-how for future production developments. To maximize the efficiency and performance of the drivetrain depending on the individual driving situation, Porsche developers defined a total of five different operating modes. As in a race car, they are activated by a “map switch on the steering wheel. Porsche applied its leading hybrid know-how in preparing the characteristic maps and the algorithm stored in them for controlling the three drive units and other systems. This know-how will also be applied to future hybrid drives. The car also creates an important foundation for the hybrid drive of tomorrow in its thermal management concept that features

five separate cooling circuits and the innovative hybrid cooling of the rear electric motor using air and water. Another example with future implications: the Porsche 918 Spyder can convert far more kinetic energy into electrical energy than other hybrid vehicles because of its intelligent control of generator functionality and conventional brakes. Its enormous regenerative power boosts efficiency and driving range. A similar form of this recovery system is implemented in the LMP1 prototypes of the 919 Hybrid which Porsche raced to an impressive 1-2 victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans. The 918 technology platform also blazed new trails with spectacular solutions like the all-carbon body, fully variable aerodynamics and a rear axle steering system. Adaptive aerodynamics and rear axle steering have already made their way into production sports cars, such as in the 911 Turbo models and in the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS. The 918 Spyder embodies classic Porsche virtues and sets cornerstones for the future. On the one hand, the car embodies performance. In September 2013, the super sports car – with 887 total system hp – set the lap record for street-legal vehicles with production tires on the North Loop of the Nürburgring with a time of 6 minutes 57 seconds – a record that has never been equaled by any other production car since. On the other hand, the car embodies efficiency. Yielding an EPA rating of 67 MPGe, the 918 Spyder convincingly illustrates the potential of plug-in hybrid technology – not only for economical driving, but more importantly for the typical sports car driving pleasure it can offer. Furthermore, Porsche also implemented innovative ideas in the manufacturing process of the hybrid super sports car. Porsche has applied for patents related to many of its innovations in assembly and quality assurance which fulfill the most stringent ergonomic requirements. They demonstrate that Porsche

is setting the standard for innovative capabilities far beyond the automobile itself. For instance, the entire assembly process takes place with wireless tools. The best example: battery-powered screwdrivers controlled via Bluetooth. They perform their work nearly silently, increase flexibility for workers at the workplace and ensure – via a database link – that specified torques are reliably performed and documented. The highly-adjustable assembly elevating truck – a specially developed solution – was designed as an ergonomic tool for finishing the twoseat monocoque. Another new type of scissors lift platforms also simplified installation of the approximately 300 pound high-voltage battery. Leather finishing and assembly tables in 918 manufacturing are considered the benchmark for ergonomics and flexibility. They can be used to manufacture different parts, for instance, by the use of changeable inserts, so that station cycle times can be fully exploited. This is how Porsche also achieved maximum efficiency in the production process for the 918 Spyder. « Article © Copyright Porsche Pictures © Copyright Exotic Auto Couture Magazine
