Aston Martin to no longer offer electric powertrain for its SUV An electric powertrain has been dropped as a possible option for Aston Martin's upcoming DBX SUV, said Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer in an April interview with Automotive News. In the interview, Palmer said he didn't like plug-in hybrids due to the complexity and cost of having two separate power sources in a single vehicle, stating that the future is pure electric powertrains and hybrids are merely a "stepping-stone." Originally, the SUV was intended to be equipped with conventional engines with a hybrid option to follow, as Aston Martin is heading towards offering electrification across its entire lineup, with no plans for diesel at all. Even with Palmer's decision, the British luxury car maker still plans on launching its limited-edition RapidE electric sedan next year. As for the SUV itself, the vehicle will be built at a plant in St Athan, Wales, and will debut in 2019 with a conventional engine. Initial powertrain offerings include a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V-12 and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a hybrid option possibly as an option later.

Industry News One Billion Euros in 2017 for Lamborghini Lamborghini reached one billion euro for the first time in the company’s history in 2017, increasing from 906 million Euro to 1,009. “Lamborghini realized another record year and we are once more outperforming our financial objectives. This was achieved while mastering an unprecedented double challenge: preparing for new models in our super sports car range, while simultaneously doubling production capacities at our headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, heralding a quantum leap in our product portfolio. This could not have been accomplished without our excellent team, which deserves all the credit, said” Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Automobili Lamborghini in a March press release. In addition, total headcount at the Modena, Italy based car maker increased from 1,415 to almost 1,600 employees, chiefly due to the market introduction of its third model line the Super Urus. Last year marked the introduction of four new models. Besides the V12 models Aventador S Coupe and Roadster, Lamborghini also added the Huracan Performante and Terzo Millenio, the latter of which will enter production once it’s out of concept status. Look for an article on the Millenio in this issue. Automotive Market Undergoing Massive Transformation by 2030 The automotive market will face huge change by the year 2030, according to a study just released by accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers LLC. According to the study, more than one in three kilometres driven will be 'shared' with 40% of all mileage driven done in autonomous vehicles. "In only a few years' time, today's norm where most people drive themselves in their own vehicle will be only one mobility concept among many," says Christoph Sturmer, PwC Autofacts Global Lead Analyst. In fact, while vehicle stock could undergo a huge drop in Europe and the US by that year, traffic on the roads will become even heavier with many conventional manufacturers and suppliers coming under pressure as a result of the large number of new registrations. Felix Kuhnert, PwC's Global Automotive Leader, says" This picture only appears to be contradictory. This automotive revolution will see many rules that industry has become accustomed to over many decades being turned on their head." As part of this, it is estimated that not only will 55% of all cars are set to be electric by 2030, but personal mileage could rise by 23% in Europe, 24% in the US and 183% in China, with China's vehicle stock increasing by almost 50 percent. One of the reasons for this besides population growth is that self-driving vehicles will be used by those people who can't drive themselves and fully-autonomous 'robo-taxis' such as those recently tested by Uber will have lots of empty trips in which they go from place to place to pick up new passengers. Although the news lately has been negative after the crash that killed a pedestrian, companies haven't stopped development of self-driving vehicles, and many trucking companies have been assisting companies in testing semi-autonomous trucks that they plan to use for long trips, thus raising mileage even more. And even though the US and Europe are in parallel modes of development and testing now, China is planning to adopt the technology even faster which could make that country the leading market for the auto industry's coming transformation. “The various different trends will reinforce each other”, says Christoph Stürmer. “For instance, electric vehicles are less susceptible to failure thanks to their simpler power train – which is a significant advantage where vehicles are being shared and used more intensively." “Thanks to increasing connectivity, individual traffic will be much easier to organise in the future," he added. Time will tell how fast the US adapts and if the industry can avoid more problems such as last month's fatal accident in Arizona involving a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Ferrari 488 Pista

Ferrari, McLaren Lead New Supercar Parade At Geneva Show

By Neil Winton GENEVA, Switzerland - As European car buyers and politicians obsessed about diesels and battery cars, the industry put on a brave front unveiling some amazing new supercars at the annual Geneva Car Show, and a bizarre Aston Martin Lagonda. Leading the assembled throng away from the mundane and luring them into the world of fantasy was the Ferrari 488 Pista with a 710-hp V8 engine. This successor to the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale will blast from 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds and on to 211 mph if you have access to a race track. The McLaren Senna has a 789 hp twin-turbo V-8, with a top speed of 211 mph also. They cost $1 million each and all production has already been sold. The $2.4 million Zerouno makes even Ferraris and McLarens look restrained. Other head-turners include the Lamborghini Huracan Performance Spyder, Bugatti Chiron Sport and the Zenvo TSR-S. Range Rover is planning a coupe version of its big flagship with the Coupe SV. This will be Land Rover’s most expensive model to date when it goes on sale later this year. The three-door model will cost more than Land Rover’s current most expensive model, the Range Rover SVAutobiography supercharged V8, which starts at $249,000. It is expected to use the same 5.0-liter V-8 engine. “It will be the most expensive Range Rover ever,” a company spokesman confirmed, without giving a price.

Production will be limited to 999 and will be modified by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Operations in Warwickshire, England. Porsche also unveiled an SUV version of its Mission E batteryonly sedan, the E Cross Turismo concept. This will be powered by the same 600 hp motor as the sedan and will accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in less than 3.5 seconds and offer a claimed range of over 300 miles. The 800 volt system will take 15 minutes to add 250 miles of range, Porsche claims. Aston Martin revived the grand old Lagonda name with a weird, massive, futuristic concept designed to be electric powered and autonomous too. If that’s not enough, the vehicle has a rear roof which is movable, which will allow actresses to emerge standing from the rear at big awards ceremonies with their dignity intact. “We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old-fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that’s been available to them,’ said Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, Andy Palmer. “Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts,” Palmer said. For an industry currently obsessed with electric cars, there weren’t many new ones on view ready for sale. The Jaguar I-Pace though stole a march on the opposition, its first electric car and rival to the Tesla Model X. The I-Pace was designed from the outset as an electric vehicle and seats 5. with a combined 400 hp blasts the SUV from rest to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. A 90 kWh lithium-ion battery delivers up to a claimed 298 mile range. Rapid charging takes the battery from 0-80% in 85-minutes, with 30-minutes charge giving about 80 miles range, Jaguar claims. Expect to pay at least $100,000 for an I-Pace when it goes on sale in the U.S. later this year. While exotic tastes were being sated at the expensive end of the car show, the regular market was overwhelmed with new SUVs, now as ubiquitous across Europe as in the U.S. Leading the SUV march was the new compact Volvo XC40 and the big Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the compact Lexus UX and the latest generation Hyundai Santa Fe. There are still sedans being launched, led by the Audi A6, Peugeot 508, Kia Ceed and Mazda6 Tourer and sedan. Volkswagen is introducing a convertible version of its small T-Roc SUV. VW unveiled its fantasy I.D. Vizzion concept, which it calls its automobile of the future which will drive autonomously and electrically. Autonomy, or self-driving, is the current fad, but don’t expect to be able to buy anything remotely like that for the foreseeable future. Aston Martin Lagonda

By Peter Sessler Automobili Lamborghini in collaboration with two laboratories of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology marks the first steps of a possible future Lamborghini electric super sports car. On the occasion of this announcement Lamborghini presents the new design concept “Lamborghini of the Terzo Millennio”. The concept physically imagines design and technology theories of tomorrow, while sustaining the visual intrigue, breath-taking performance and, most importantly, the visceral emotion found in every dimension of a Lamborghini. It is made for future super sports car enthusiasts. The technological goal of the project is to enable Lamborghini to address the future of the super sports car in five different dimensions: energy storage systems, innovative materials, propulsion system, visionary design, and emotion. The first two dimensions are conceived together with the two laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: the “Dinca Research Lab”, led by Prof. Mircea Dinca, Department of Chemistry and the “Mechanosynthesis Group”, led by Prof. Anastasios John Hart, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The collaboration is substantially financed by Automobili Lamborghini and intended to lead to radical innovation in energy storage systems technology and material science. Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, says: “Exactly one year ago we have signed an agreement with the MIT-Italy Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which marked the start of a collaboration between two outstanding entities for the creation of a project that intends to write an important page in the future of super sports cars for the third millennium. Collaborating with MIT for

20

our R&D department is an exceptional opportunity to do what Lamborghini has always been very good at: rewriting the rules on super sports cars. Now we are presenting an exciting and progressive concept car. We are inspired by embracing what is impossible today to craft the realities of tomorrow: Lamborghini must always create the dreams of the next generation.” Energy Storage Systems The strategy of creating super sports cars with uncompromising performance generates Lamborghini’s motivation to revolutionize the approach to energy storage, moving away from conventional batteries and investigating the potential of supercapacitors to equip the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio. This is in line with the application of low voltage supercapacitors in the V12 Aventador, which started five years ago. The next logical step is the development of a storage system able to deliver high peak power and regenerate kinetic energy with very limited influence from aging and cycling during the vehicle’s life, and with the ability to symmetrically release and harvest electric power. Thus, the collaboration with Prof. Mircea Dinca is aiming to overcome the limits of today’s technology and close the gap on conventional batteries’ energy density while preserving the high power, symmetrical behavior and the very long lifecycle related to supercapacitor technology. Innovative materials To support this revolution in energy storage systems, materials and their functions have to change, too. Lamborghini aims to further develop its leadership in the design and production of carbon fiber structures and parts, enhancing its ability to develop features and functions that take lightweight materials to the

Exotic Cars Magazine

next level. For this reason, the cooperation with Prof. John Hart will investigate the new manufacturing routes for carbon fiber materials constituting the bodyshell of the Terzo Millennio, which will also act as an accumulator for energy storage and enable the complete body of the car to be used as a storage system. Prof. Hart says, “We are thrilled to combine our expertise in advanced materials and manufacturing with the vision and support of Automobili Lamborghini, and to realize new concepts that will shape the future of transportation.” The project also aims to combine the technology to continuously monitor the whole carbon fiber structure, both visible and invisible, with the concept of “self-healing”: the target is to provide the Terzo Millennio with the ability to conduct its own health monitoring to detect cracks and damages in its substructure derived from accidents. In this case a self-repairing process starts via micro-channels filled with healing chemistries, reducing to zero the risks of small cracks propagating further in the carbon fiber structure. This allows further weight reduction with increased use of carbon fiber or the application of CFK to high-fatigue parts. Propulsion System The energy storage system goes hand-in hand with performance: each wheel incorporates an integrated electric engine, perpetuating the commitment to four-wheel drive and in the meantime harvesting the opportunities provided by electric motors: high torque, reversibility, and the possibility of moving energy by wire. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio therefore also embodies the first steps for Lamborghini to go in the direction of creating a “Lamborghini Electric”. Moving the electric motors into the wheels has another positive effect: freedom for designers and aerodynamicists. Design

The Lamborghini Terzo Millenio is the visionary outcome conceived by the Lamborghini Centro Stile to express future design elements, taking into account the radical changes in technology and anticipating elements of forthcoming Lamborghini design. An example for a very strong statement is the evolution and further development of the Lamborghini typical Y-signature in the front and rear lights. As a result of the change in technologies the design can be a radical expression of aerodynamic supremacy, based around an entirely new architecture, totally dedicated to perfecting airflow. A highly advanced monocoque based on Lamborghini’s Forged Composite technology can be modelled, containing only the energy accumulation system and driver’s and co-driver’s seats, inspired by race cars. Emotion Fundamental to a Lamborghini hypercar of the future is sustaining the emotion of driving a Lamborghini, and an immersive driver experience. The responsiveness of the electric motors, the four-wheel torque control and the dynamic body control system will enhance the driver’s experience, projecting it into the third millennium. Finally, the consequent aerodynamics and innovative lightweight approach will result in a new dimension of longitudinal as well as lateral dynamics, in this combination until today unknown from electrified cars. The Lamborghini Terzo Millenio’s virtual cockpit allows more than travelling the highways of a future world: its Piloted Driving simulation allows the driver to be taken around a track such as Imola by a virtual expert before the driver takes over to feel like a ‘pilot’ himself, experiencing the real car and circuit while following the virtual ghost car.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

1955 Mercedes 300 SL

The 300SL Gulling 1954-1957, by Peter C. Sessler The 300SL was the first road-going car developed from the Mercedes-Benz race cars, and that was at the International Motor Sports Show at New York in January 1954. It was well-receivedfor one thing, the car had unique looks for the time- it sported two Gullwing doors and the front of the car had a new, simple grille design that used a large Mercedes-Benz star. The grille design has been a Mercedes-Benz SL trademark since then. Still, production reached only a total of 1,400 units in its three year life span, 19541957. SL stood for “Sports Light.” The Gullwing doors The 300SL (the W194) was based on the 300S production car which came to fruition in the late 1940s. However, to keep costs down, it was decided to use the production based engine in the race car, instead of using a specially designed race engine. Unfortunately, the production based engine was definitely down on power. Competing makes, such as Ferrari and Jaguar, were typically open roadsters which were designed that way to keep weight and frontal area at a minimum. However, to make the car aerodynamic as possible, Mercedes

24

May 2018

felt that a hardtop was required. A carefully designed roof would trade some frontal area for a large reduction in the drag coefficientand that would make the 300SL more competitive and aerodynamic. This would make the most of the power output of the production based engine. Unlike other cars, the 300SL used a spaceframe for the chassis, instead of a conventional ladder frame. This technique enabled Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the Chief Designer of the 300SL, to have a frame that was not only strong, but also light- in fact, the chassis of the 300SL only weighed 110 lbs. The result was a very sleek car, but unfortunately, left no provision for doors! This presented the designers with two problems. The first was how to get the driver in and out of the car and at the same time, meet the racing rules that stipulated doors that measured a minimum of 16” x 8”. The problem was the side tubes used on the chassis were much higher than normal, which left no room for conventional type doors- unless a major redesign was made. The solution eventually presented itself. Instead of the doors extending down, they extended upwards into the roof. The doors were hinged the top and held open by a folding prop rod. Depending on the driver’s size, the steering wheel could then be detached to enable entry. Later, some additional changes were also made, but the end result was a car met all the racing rules, was extremely well suited for the type of racing it was made for, and sported a unique

front grille which was dominated by a large Mercedes-Benz star. The street 300SL In most respects, the streetable 300SL was very similar to the race versions. But there were differences, too. The 300SL, coded W198, featured a front grille with the large MercedesBenz star, a hood that was hinged at the front (instead of the rear) and two power hood bulges. More noticeable, were the eyebrows above each wheel arch- these gave some styling pizzazz to the otherwise slab-side body; in fact, Mercedes-Benz claimed they were aerodynamic additions because they directed the airflow over the top of the car and thus helping to keep the windows clean in inclement weather. Mechanically, the 300SL was similar to the race versions which featured a rear swing-axle. A better, low-pivot swing axle had been developed, but as Mercedes-Benz did not feel that it was ready for this system, went with the traditional rear swing axle. The front suspension was conventional, with double wishbones with coil springs, shocks and anti-roll bar. Steering was recirculating ball and chassis used the complex spaceframe system. The engine used was a 3.0 liter straight inline six cylinder that employed a cast iron block and an aluminum cylinder head. Cam actuation was achieved by a chain-driven overhead camshaft; compression ratio was 8:55:1. The oiling system used a dry sump. Unique at the time, was the Bosch direct fuel injection system. The following numbers don’t really sound like much, but in the 1950’s parlance, it was. The 3.0 liter engine was rated at 215hp @5,800

with 203 ft.lb torque.torque at 4,600 rpm. "You don't have to worry about winding up these engines," he said. "Before they're even dropped into a car they're run for 24 hours on a dynamometer, including six hours at peak output. Then they're torn down, checked, reassembled, and given another eight hours of running-in. Our times may be a shade slow, but don't be afraid to peak it in the gears." This was taken from the April,1956 issue of Sports Cars Illustrated. Another interesting point were the combustion chambersthere weren’t any! Instead, they were formed by the piston’s shape. Ford, with the MEL engine (1958-1968) and the Chevrolet W-Series big-block (1958-1965) both tried using similar cylinder heads, with disappointing results. The interior was fitted with larger seats, carpeting and leather was optional. Naturally, heating and cooling controls were fitted as was the steering wheel which was made to pivot for easier entry and exit. It was not possible to raise and lower the door windows; instead, they could be removed and stored in the area behind the seats. And for use behind the seats, a pair of suitcases were available from Mercedes-Benz, as there wasn’t any practical room in the trunk. For those wishing greater speed, an optional camshaft was also available. Other mechanical options included axle ratios, knockoff wheels and the aluminum body of which twenty-nine were made. These took about 200 lbs from the 300SL’s weight. Regardless of the car’s good or bad points, the reality is that the 300SL Gullwing is one of most sought after collector cars of all time, and at the same time, is the inspiration of the current Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. 2011-2014 Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS Fast-forward to 2010.This new car not only resembles the 300 SL, but also has those overhead Gullwing doors. Modern aerodynamics says that supercars should be wedge shaped. Not the SLS. The SLS has an immensely long front hood with the open Mercedes-Benz grille and its sloping tail- that too resembles the 26

May 2018

original 300 SL. The result is a poor aerodynamic drag of 0.36yet paying homage to history is bound to have some detractions. The SLS may not be as quick as a Ferrari 458/599, but to put it mildly, who cares. The Mercedes-Benz SLS ((Super Light Sport) AMG at the same time, built to replace the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren supercar, which ended production in 2009. The McLaren, was not as successful as it could have been. In terms of design, the MercedesBenz SLR McLaren had many features that were later seen on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG- like the long hood/short trunk, and the Gullwing doors. However, its immense cost probably did it in- whereas the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG listed for around $200,000 in 2010, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren cost nearer to $500,000. What it all adds up to, the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS best sports car Mercedes has ever built. In his review for "Top Gear," Jeremy Clarkson referred to the SLS AMG as "the greatest car in the world," noting that "it's more powerful than a Ferrari 458, just, it's a little bit louder than a Lamborghini, and it's way more fun than the 911RS GT Turbo 3S or whatever this week's ultimate Beetle (i.e., Porsche) is called; this is the thinking man's supercar.” The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was assembled largely by hand, with its chassis and aluminum body shell produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria and then transferred to Sindelfingen, Germany for assembly, with its engine being hand built by AMG in Affalterbach, Germany. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG made its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009 and went on sale in Europe in 2010. It went on sale in U.S.A. in 2011. Approximately 300 of these cars were planned to be sold in the first year. The standard engine in the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS is the M-159 6.2 liter aluminum V-8 rated at 563hp @6,500 rpm with 479 ft.lb. torque @4,750 rpm. The transmission is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission.

The Gullwing doors were designed to separate the doors from the car, in case of a detected rollover within 10-15 seconds. Explosive bolts situated at the top of the door frame separate the doors from the car for easy exit during a serious accident, according to Car and Driver, 7/10. In its brief tenure, the SLS was built in many different variations. By Sameer Shah Lamborghini is unsurpassed with its high performance razor sharp sports cars, producing a rich heritage and glorious past of powerful beasts like Diablo, Countach, Murcielago, Aventador and Huracan. The company now enters a new arena of the SUV market by launching its next car known as the ‘Lamborghini Urus,’ the family’s first Super Sport Utility Vehicle, and creates a new niche in the luxury segment with benchmarking power, performance, and driving dynamics, as well as unparalleled design, luxury and daily usability. As always, the Italian carmaker maintains a unique tradition of naming its cars. The name ‘Urus’ is derived from the world of bulls. The Urus, also known as Aurochs, is one of the large, wild ancestors of domestic cattle. The Spanish fighting bull, as bred for the past 500 years, is still very close to the Urus in its appearance. Urus fits perfectly within the Lamborghini family as a high perfor-

mance car and is the culmination of intensive development and passionate skill to create a new breed of bull: a Super SUV that transcends the boundaries of expectations and opens the door to new possibilities, for both Lamborghini and its customers. It features a 4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 650 HP (478 kW) at 6,000 rpm, maximum 6,800 rpm, and 850 Nm of maximum torque already at 2,250 rpm. With 162.7 HP/L, the Urus claims the highest specific power outputs in its class and best weight-to-power ratio at 3.38 Kg/HP. The machine accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 12.8 seconds, and with a top speed of 305 km/h it is the fastest SUV available. Braking is no less impressive as it decelerates from 100 km/h to 0 in 33.7 m. URUS: a multi-faceted personality Lamborghini Urus is as much a luxury SUV as the most powerful,

with super sports car dynamism to be enjoyed by both driver and passengers. Its low-line coupe styling and commanding road position belie the very comfortable ride, higher ground clearance, and luxurious interior space together with the latest technologies. The Urus provides easy driving in the city, maximum comfort during long journeys, thrilling super sports car dynamics on the road and track, and versatile off-road capabilities in a range of environments. The Lamborghini Urus has a dual personality as a multi-dimensional mechanism and can be specified to be as sporty or as elegant as the owner wishes, and can be used equally as a daily luxury driver or provide an exhilarating super sports experience. Engine The Lamborghini Urus sports a new front-mounted, 4.0 liter petrol V8 twin-turbo aluminium engine. Lamborghini’s choice of a turbo engine, the first in a Lamborghini, reflects the desired usage range

of the Urus. Especially in off-road conditions, a high level of torque at low RPMs is necessary and can be guaranteed only by such an engine that provides optimal responsiveness and efficiency with its performance and specific output dynamics placing this specimen of steel bovine aggression in a new class of its own. The compact engine optimizes the car’s center of gravity through its low-mounted position with the central turbo charger layout placed close to the combustion chambers ensuring optimal engine responsiveness. Twin-scroll turbochargers run in parallel, providing maximum power in full-load conditions. This reduces turbo lag and ensures maximum torque and smooth provision of power throughout the torque curve, even at low speeds. Two separate exhaust flows complement the cylinder firing sequence by eliminating cross-interference in the exhaust gas cycle.

Transmission and gearbox The Lamborghini Urus features an automatic eight-speed gearbox. The compact and efficient electro-hydraulically controlled planetary gearbox is tuned to provide very short low gear ratios and longer high gears. A highly efficient slip-controlled converter lock-up clutch and specially-developed torque converter guarantee a highly responsive engine, with an exceptionally powerful starting ratio for exciting acceleration and high speed at low RPMs along with optimal fuel consumption and emissions. This configuration also ensures highly efficient gear braking. Lamborghini four-wheel drive and torque vectoring: optimizing driving dynamics The Lamborghini Urus’ four-wheel drive system delivers safe, highly-responsive driving dynamics on every road and surface, in all weather. A Torsen central self-locking differential provides maximum control and agility in all driving conditions, particularly off-road. Torque is split 40/60 to the independent front/rear axle as standard, with a dynamic maximum torque of 70% to the front or 87% to the rear, providing specific control in diverse driving conditions.

at all speeds. In CORSA, the vehicle is even more precise and performance-oriented keeping roll at a minimum. In the three offroad modes NEVE, TERRA and SABBIA, higher ground clearance allows increased clearance for obstacles, with anti-roll bars providing independent asymmetric movement during cornering to ensure optimal traction. The electromechanical active roll stabilization system appears in the Urus for the first time in a Lamborghini. The stabilization system ensures maximum reduction of the roll angle on bumpy roads in both a straight line and around corners through active decoupling of the stabilizer halves, while ensuring the most agile drive and responsive steering. The Urus’ specially-tuned damping system incorporates new damper valves, continually adjusting to different driving conditions: Harder when cornering and softer in a straight line. The adaptive damper concept is automatically adjusted to different driving modes through ANIMA or can be fully customized by the driver via the EGO mode, offering impact absorption necessary for a very comfortable ride to an extremely sporty, aggressive setting depending on driving style and road conditions.

The Tamburo - Lamborghini driving dynamics control The Tamburo driving mode selector on the center console controls all dynamic vehicle systems and allows the selection of driving dynamics according to surface conditions or driver’s preference via STRADA, SPORT, and CORSA as well the additional NEVE (snow) mode. The selector offers two additional off-road settings: TERRA (off-road) and SABBIA (sand). The modes adjust the Urus to selected driving conditions. STRADA mode adapts the height according to speed to enhance comfort, while in SPORT the Urus lowers to ensure stability and precision

Exterior design The Urus is undoubtedly a Lamborghini, taking cues from the LM002 as well as the super sports cars that are fundamental to Lamborghini heritage: The Urus has outstanding proportions, adopting the twothirds body, one-third window ratio of Lamborghini super sports cars. The Lamborghini Urus is a Lamborghini with luxurious space for up to five occupants. Its specifically placed highlights communicate its strength, muscularity, dynamically assertive character, and commanding road position.

The proud, low front is underlined by the substantial front fender: The Urus is the most powerful SUV available. Large air intakes sporting the hexagonal theme are linked by a low-level front spoiler, further emphasizing the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and exceptional performance. The front lights are sleek, slim, and sporty, set in a horizontal position with LED headlights in the familiar Lamborghini Y shape. Its distinctive single-line silhouette features a dynamic coupe-style fly line, accented by the frameless doors and emphasizing the typical Lamborghini characteristic of a lower front end. The powerful character line traces upwards around the rear glass windows, dynamically connecting front and rear and emphasizing the cohesive design impression of creation from a single piece. The Y-shaped front air intakes, also a feature of the LM002, are detailed with the Italian flag: The Urus is born and bred in Italy. The low roofline and position of the frameless windows allude to the low seating position of driver and passengers within the car. The rear of the Urus sports the complex, powerful lines typical of a Lamborghini, reinforcing the strong, planted character of the car. The roof line broadens at the base of the roof panel in the style of other well-known Lamborghini models including the Countach and Murcielago. The substantial rear shoulders support the strongly inclined rear windows, with the entire rear connected by the fender and concurrent black panel housing the air grilles, Lamborghini logo, and the Y-shaped taillights. The rear diffuser is inspired by Lamborghini race cars, with integrated double round exhaust pipes. The rear door lines incorporate both concave and convex lines, giving the Urus its pinched waist before its dynamic expansion out to its broad, muscular rear.

Chassis and suspension The Urus is the new benchmark for a Super SUV and a true Lamborghini: It delivers best-in-class lightweight technologies and power-to-weight ratio, with innovation in design and engineering to ensure the best possible driving dynamics as well as overall efficiency. The chassis is a blend of aluminum and steel, with frameless aluminum doors, torsional beams replacing a C-pillar, and cross-members in aluminum contributing to the lightweight Urus, along with the chassis floor in a high-strength steel material. Its seats are designed and constructed for lightweight comfort and wheel rims are in forged aluminum. A rear axle with optimized subframe features an aluminum and steel hybrid construction. Brakes and wheels The Lamborghini Urus’ braking system is commensurate with its super sports car performance, ensuring high thermal resistance and accommodating frequent and heavy braking, even from high speeds and in extreme conditions such as on track or at high elevation. Standard Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCB) are the largest and most powerful available, measuring 440 x 40 mm at the front and 370 x 30 mm at the rear. Wheel options range from 21” to 23”, fitted with a range of summer, winter, all-season, all-terrain, and sport tires, all especially developed by Pirelli for the Lamborghini Urus and with widths varying between front and rear to enhance stability and sportive driving behavior. The Urus interior The Urus is as much a luxury SUV as the most powerful, with

super sports car dynamism to be enjoyed by both driver and passengers. The interior’s design and finish echoes that of the exterior in terms of unmistakable Lamborghini design, colorways, and individuality. Inside, the Urus is as clearly a Lamborghini as it is from outside, with a sporty yet luxurious design and finish. The Lamborghini Urus embodies the Lamborghini principal that a car’s design, power and dynamic capabilities mean every driver should feel like a pilot. The Lamborghini Urus is technologically advanced yet intuitively operable. The driver and passengers are all afforded a low but extremely comfortable super sports car seat position, firmly integrated within the cabin and for the driver, every cockpit control within easy reach. A multi-function, three-spoke steering wheel incorporates a vibration damper to enhance comfort in all driving conditions. Multifunction switches are intuitively located on the steering wheel to control the Lamborghini Infotainment System (LIS), including car set-up, media, telephone, and navigation. A fully-digital TFT display shows the Urus’ main information in an animated 3D representation and is customizable by the driver. Seating Its long wheelbase of 3.003 m and the low seating position of the occupants creates a comfortable and extremely spacious feel. The Lamborghini Urus ensures luxury and roominess for each of its occupants in seats designed specifically for the Urus Super SUV. The standard front DNA memory sport seats are fully electric, heated, and 12-way adjustable. More luxurious, 18-way fully-electric front seats are available as an option, including features such as ventilation and massage. The rear bench seat as standard comes 34

with a movable and folding seat back and ISOFIX fixings. Providing an extremely comfortable five-seat configuration, the ability to fold and move the rear seat offers maximum versatility and increased luggage capacity for daily use. The rear bench seat can be lowered to substantially extend the trunk space from 616 liters to 1.596 liters. As an option in conjunction with the fully-electric front seats, a more exclusive two-seat rear layout can be specified providing exceptional rear passenger comfort while reflecting the Urus’ sporty character. “The Lamborghini Urus is a visionary approach based on the infusion of Lamborghini DNA into the most versatile vehicle, the SUV. The Urus elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible, the Super SUV. It is a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics, and emotion as well as every day drivability in a range of environments,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. GTV Concept Car

By Rob Taylor - Special to Exotic Cars Magazine Although Lamborghini started life in 1945 associated with tractors, by 1963, it was success in tractors that allowed Ferruccio Lamborghini to take revenge on Enzo Ferrari. No other car make has risen to such iconic status so quickly or has had so many different owners in such a short time - six in just thirty five years. As one of the wealthiest men in Italy, Ferruccio had been able to indulge his love of cars with Ferraris, Jaguars, and Mercedes 'Gull Wings,' and legend has it that it was the unreliability of his Ferrari which caused him to travel to Modena to confront Enzo. Unfortunately for Ferrari, Enzo refused to see Ferruccio who stormed back to his tractor factory in Cento determined to manufacture the highest quality gran turismo car of all time. 350 GTV Prototype and GT His first prototype, the 350 GTV, relied on many bought-in components including a chassis built by Neri and Bonacini of Modena, a gearbox from ZF, an interior by an external upholsterer and a Scaglione-designed body built by Sargiotto of Turin. The magnificent V-12 engine was designed by engineer-supreme Giotto Bizzarrini, previously of Ferrari, and used many parts made by ATS Microfusioni. Although the GTV originally produced 350 38

May 2018

bhp at 8,000 rpms, Ferruccio requested a reduction to 270 bhp at 6,500 rpms to better serve his design goal greater reliability. This was, after all, to be a grand touring car, not a racer. Bizzarrini wanted to build racing engines, however, and soon departed. The metallic blue prototype appeared as a “non-runner” at the 1963 Turin Auto Show with its engine displayed next to the car as it wouldn't fit after design upgrades. The lukewarm response prompted the redesign and eventual production of the 350 GT, which produced sufficient enthusiasm five months later at Geneva to confirm production. Ferruccio must have been relieved, having recently invested millions on a state-of-the-art factory at Sant'Agata, Bologna. He may have lost the brilliant Bizzarrini but he was able to attract some of the best engineers and designers of the day including Dallara, Stanzani and Sgarzi. He even managed to secure racing legend Bob Wallace as chief test driver, a vital component of a ‘supercar’ manufacturer. The 350 GTV prototype was ‘productionized’ under the direction of Dallara who commissioned Touring of Milan (of Aston Martin DB4 fame) to build the car using its patented Superleggera method which involved mounting panels on a frame built from light tubing. While still bearing inspiration from the prototype, the new exterior was completely different with the 'pop-up' head-

lights replaced by fixed ovals. The new GT looked like no other and was instantly recognizable as Lamborghini. The replacement of the rare and expensive down-draught Weber carburetors with side-draught models allowed the engine to fit under the smooth-lined, extended hood. From 1964 to 1966, one hundred twenty 350 GTs were sold and the next model was developed over the next two years with styling improvements and a larger 4.0 liter engine. In an attempt to widen its appeal, Lamborghini introduced a 400 cc 2+2 GT, of which 250 models sold. Miura Other models followed but the next milestone for Lamborghini was the evocative Miura, the work of Marcello Gandini of the Bertone design house. The Miura is perhaps best remembered from the film “The Italian Job,” skillfully driven by Rossano Brazzi up an Italian alpine pass. Enthusiasts watching for the first time must have wept as the Miura plowed headlong into the mafia's earth mover and was tipped over the edge into the ravine below. This car must have shaken Ferrari to its roots in terms of its beauty, its handling, and its incredible performance. By “supercar' standards, it was a commercial triumph with

profitable sales of more than 600. Espada As the seventies approached, Lamborghini produced increasingly more outlandish designs, namely the four-seater Espada and the extreme Countach which replaced the Miura. Also designed by Gandini and engineered by Dallara, the Espada was based on the Miura with the engine mounted further forward but with its wheelbase nearly four inches longer. The longer wheelbase provided space for the extra seats but ironically, the overall length was actually shorter. Countach The futuristic, insect-like Countach was even more successful with nearly 2000 sales before it gave way to the Diablo of 1990, but not before the final design of the Countach debuted on the company’s 25th anniversary. It was at about this time that Lamborghini made its short-lived and unsuccessful foray into Formula 1 motor racing. Formula One It wasn't the supercars that caused the first hiccup at Lamborghini but the tractors: A customer cancelled a large order after Ferruccio had upgraded his factory to increase

capacity to meet demand. As a result, he lost a lot of investment as well as his interest in his dream cars, selling a controlling interest to Swiss industrialist Georges-Henri Rossetti. While he stayed on to run the company, the oil crisis of 1973 caused Ferruccio to lose interest entirely and he sold the remaining 49% to another Swiss, Rene Leimer. This was Lamborghini's lowest period, compounded by the loss of a contract to build the BMW M1 hastened bankruptcy in 1978. After six additional difficult years, the assets were acquired by Patrick Mimran, another Swiss, who put Lamborghini back on its feet and sold it to U.S.-based Chrysler in 1986. LM002 4x4 After an abortive attempt to supply the U.S. Government with 'jeeps,’ Lamborghini moved more carefully, deciding to develop a four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, an unusual move for high-performance super-sport builder. After various prototypes and show models offering differing configurations, production of the “Rambo-Lambo” LMO02 started in 1986 and over the next six years some 320 were sold, manufactured in the U.S., outfitted with full luxury package, run-flat tires, and an oversize fuel tank. Lamborghini attempted to outfit a later model to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally. Diablo The Diablo represents an even more futuristic offspring of its design predecessors, the Miura and Countach. Despite dis-

40

May 2018

agreements between its Lamborghini designers and Chrysler which delayed its debut, Diablo became an instant eleven-year favorite, eventually selling nearly 3000 models worldwide and seemingly rescuing the Lamborghini legend after the slow 1980s. Combining a wide, low profile in classic Lamborghini style, the Diablo left the factory as the world’s fastest production car. The concept survived several variations and continuous upgrades throughout the 1990s, including changes in company ownership. The Slow Years Having surprisingly bought Lamborghini in 1986, the Chrysler management recognized by 1994 that the small Italian supercar manufacturer did not fit with the their model, so they sold it to the three far-east corporations Megatech, V Power and Sedtco, which management immediately replaced the executive recruited by Chrysler. This was another slow period for the company and the final change of ownership presaged by Lamborghini negotiated with Audi in 1997 to use the 4.2 litre Volvo and quattro drive in the planned next Lamborghini model. The following year Dr. Ferdinand Piech, then Volkswagen Group Chairman, convinced the owners that they should sell at non-disclosed price. He since became chairman of Bentley and passed the mantle to another engineer, the new Audi chairman, Dr. Martin Winterkorn.

Aventador LP700-4 Gallardo Lamborghini’s best-selling favorite of more than a decade, the company built more than 14,000 Gallardos during production, which included continuous family design improvements. The first model offered an “E-gear” that provided an optional electro-hydraulic assist for faster gear shifting via paddles behind the steering wheel. The 2006 model included several improvements from the SE, including better handling and turning, an improved sound from the exhaust, more power, and lower gearing, which made it that much faster. Italian state police used two Gallardos during emergencies and safety use, and also to transport body organs for transplantation. Murcielago and LP670 Superveloce Named for a fighting bull that survived 24 sword strokes and was ultimately spared by the matador, the Murcielago served as the flagship for Lamborghini for 10 years, 2001-2010. A low-running, all-wheel-drive version of traditional Lamborghini design excellence, the height of the car is less than four feet tall. The initial version, all-wheel-drive, integrated the rear differential with the engine. The Murcielago used active rear wing and air intakes that deployed only at high speeds, maximizing aerodynamic and cooling efficiency. The LP670-4 was the most powerful version of the production line, as well as the lightest and fastest. The 4000th model went to China. 42

May 2018

Aventador LP722 Labeled “The best Lamborghini ever,” the Aventador replaced the Murcielago and sold 5000 in its first five years, exceeding its designed production because of its popularity. The Aventador uses Lamborghini’s second V12 engine, after the first was used on the 350 GT. Three Aventador models are still in production. Lamborghini built the Aventador Centenario, unveiled in 2016, to commemorate the 100th birthday of its founder, Ferrucio Lamborghini. Huracan Named “Supercar of the Year” for 2014, the follow-on to the Gallardo eventually sired nine variants, all showcasing traditional Lamborghini style and speed, including three convertible Spyders. One version, the LP 610-4 Polizia, became the official Italian police car, and the company donated another to Pope Francis. The Huracan name graces both track and coupe models, all possessing extreme Lamborghini driving power, maneuverability, and modern design features. The Huracan Spyder was designed as a convertible shorter version of the track model, nevertheless delivering traditionally exceptional Italian taste and sporting style. The Spyder offered new ANIMA technology in several settings that allowed the driver to calibrate the car’s handling to a

personal handling style, creating a bond between car and driver unavailable in other models. Terzo Millennio This super sport concept car developed as a “thinking box in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Terzo Millennio uses high-capacity electric capacitors instead of batteries which are capable of simultaneously storing and releasing energy. A running model would have motors on all four rims, making it an all-wheel-drive vehicle without a drivetrain and also making it as stable as a Formula One car. It’s track variant has self-driving capability as well as a function to train drivers using a ghost car in a digital training environment. Appearance is all Lamborghini, with familiar design shapes on the hood, lights, trunk, and engine bay, and the exterior even has a health monitoring function that can heal itself, if damaged, using nano-tubes within the carbon fiber of the exterior. Urus Lamborghini has created the Super SUV, which combines the sports car and the SUV. The Urus creates a new niche in the luxury segment that only Lamborghini can fill, with its well-known heritage of power, performance, driving dynamics, design, luxury, and usability. The V8 twin-turbo engine gives it the highest

power among SUVs, along with all-wheel-drive and expected Lamborghini excellence everywhere else. True to the SUV nomenclature, it offers a daily-driveable ride both on and off-road, higher ground clearance, and luxurious space, all with standard Lamborghini technologies. Polo Storico This archive function maintains the records of all components and specifications of Lamborghini cars, including technical specifications, drawings, colors, and upholstery. The process maintains the integrity of Lamborghini vehicles through a painstaking certification process that verifies origin and authenticity. No single technician can certify a vehicle because of a four-layer certification process and a long series of tests to certify conformity with original specifications. Numerous levels of Lamborghini restoration personnel restore and certify the details of each car as carefully as possible with the intent of maintaining each car to its exact original condition and features, thanks to Lamborghini expertise and genuine spare parts. The end result is a single standard for Lamborghini certification and an unequaled restoration system that preserves the value of Lamborghini cars.

Lamborghini Centenario

May 2018

Exotic Cars Magazine

By Sameer Shah The Centenario project has been a big one for the Lamborghini team at Sant’Agata Bolognese. It was developed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of founder Ferruccio Lamborghini’s birth, and in honor of him, the company built 20 coupes and 20 roadster versions of the glorious V-12 exotic. The Centenario’s undoubtedly wild design is one that stands out against even the most abstract supercars in the industry, and the roadster variant may take the cake in terms of sheer thrills. The first example in the world was delivered today, marking an important date for the historically extravagant brand. The Italian icon continues to honor the centenary of its dynamic founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, with this special commemorative series. Designers were given the freedom to create an open design that embodies the progressive qualities of Lamborghini’s visionary founder and shines in an elegant environment. This next-level Roadster embodies a new design direction for Lamborghini accentuated by clean surfaces and superb reflections as ‘form follows function’ - true to Lamborghini’s core design DNA. Centenario’s silhouette features low overhangs in the front and rear creating a clean, sensuous, mono-body shape. “Lamborghini prides itself on the relentless pursuit of experimentation. We are proud to unleash Centenario’s further potential in the form of a classic roadster, the perfect harmony between innovation and timeless design. This unique engineering achievement is a befitting tribute to Lamborghini’s extraordinary past and a preview of its brilliant future. Centenario 50

Roadster embraces the cutting edge characteristics of its coupé sibling and embraces the freedom of a true open-top super sports car for a pure drive experience,” said Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chief Executive Officer. Known for experimenting with new cutting edge colors, designers developed a special silver exterior color, called “Argento Centenario,” fashioned exclusively for the Lamborghini Centenario Roadster that accentuates its curvaceous profile. To achieve this signature matte finish, designers applied a new high-tech process dissolving the metal while diluting and reducing the appearance of the metal grain giving it a silky and rich exterior finish. The car’s enhanced aerodynamic design includes an extending rear wing providing more downforce at high speeds and is equipped with rear-wheel steering for increased agility and stability. A new fully connected infotainment and innovative touchscreen system includes internet browsing and Apple CarPlay for easy use. Advanced ergonomic studies were also conducted to achieve maximum comfort for the interior, specifically for the Roadster. The front windscreen is shaped to reduce turbulence for the cabin passengers, deflecting the air around and above their heads, keeping the level of ventilation within the cockpit to an optimal level for a sunlit environment. Sleek, frameless windows surround the interior, providing a light and airy effect while improving insulation. Equipped with the most powerful engine produced by Lamborghini to date, the Centenario Roadster’s elegant exterior is matched with the unmistakable power of Lamborghini’s naturally aspirated V12 engine. Excellent power to weight ratio in combination with the

optimized aerodynamic design allows the car to easily reach 350 km/h, delivering superior balance and maximum stability. Design and Aerodynamics The Lamborghini Centenario Roadster is designed by the Centro Stile Lamborghini. Each component is stylistically relevant and actively improves performance in terms of drag, downforce, and engine cooling. Each detail has also been refined to reach the best engineering solution for an optimal driving experience also in terms of cabin comfort. This optimal design and function is reached as well with the implementation of a channel in the rear wall, in the back of the headrest, that provides a smooth flow of air from the cabin towards the rear of the trunk to minimize air recirculation and turbulence within the passenger compartment. The rear wing then benefits from additional aeroload for increased rear downforce. The body of the Centenario is defined completely in carbon fiber. The front bonnet, scissor door panels, and open top roof line are fluent, aerodynamic, and organic. The lower components, composed of shiny carbon fiber, are functional, technical and dedicated to aerodynamic superiority, including the front splitter, side skirts, wheel arches and rear diffuser. Air flows through ducts within the front headlight casings and others in the sideskirts and around the wheel arches, improving airflow to the rear radiators and providing optimized cooling. The prominent profile of the rear wheel arch accentuates the Centenario’s rear-wheel steering. Pirelli PZero tyres, developed specifically for rear-wheel steering, sit on exclusive 20”/21” front/ rear rims in forged and milled aluminium. The spokes’ fan shape, accented in carbon fiber, masks ducts

extracting hot air from the carbon ceramic brakes, finished with a central-locking wheel nut sporting the Lamborghini shield. The integrated rear diffuser dominates the back of the car, its substantial dimension optimizing air flow distribution, maximizing the car’s downforce and aesthetically emphasizing the importance of aerodynamics in the Centenario. The Y- shaped LED lights stretch the full width of the rear, distinguishing the Centenario day or night. An extendable rear wing is integrated into the body when stationary or at low speeds to preserve the minimalist lines of the Centenario. According to vehicle dynamic conditions and driving mode chosen, the wing extends to 150mm and rotates up to 15 degrees for optimal aerodynamic efficiency in high performance conditions. Power and Performance The highly responsive V12 architecture delivers 770 hp (566 kW) with an engine speed regulator raised from 8,350 rpm to 8,600 rpm. Accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, the Centenario Roadster’s top speed is more than 350 km/h. Braking distance is equally impressive: from 100-0 km/h in just 31 m (102 feet). Chassis and Drive Train The body of the Centenario is built entirely in carbon fiber monocoque, with all other body parts and trims in carbon fiber. With a dry weight of just 1,570 kg (3,461 lbs), the Centenario achieves a weight-to-power ratio of 2.04 kg/hp. The Roadster adopts Lamborghini’s new rear-wheel steering system, which increases turning agility at low speeds and requires less steering angle, as well as a reduced turning radius.

At high speeds the rear tires turn in the same direction of the steering angle which leads to a virtual increase of the wheelbase. As a result the rear-wheel steering provides increased stability and optimizes vehicle response. In the three Lamborghini driving modes, Strada, Sport and Corsa, the rear-wheel steering heightens the characteristics of each, particularly in lateral dynamics. The Roadster is fitted with Lamborghini’s magneto rheological suspension and Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) providing optimal responsiveness and driver feedback. For a lightweight solution and faster gear shifting, the transmission features an Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) gearbox. Interior - Luxury and Functionality Clients can specify their Centenario Roadster to include any color and finish from Lamborghini’s Ad Personam personalization program. The Lamborghini Centenario Roadster on display features subtle and luxurious interiors in light brown Alcantara Terra di California with Bianco Polar leather inlets, stitching and piping as well as detailed cross-stitching on the seats, dashboard, and rocker cover. Functionality and connectivity are essential features including satellite navigation and a high-definition 10.1 inch touchscreen. An advanced info-tainment system allows for users to browse the Internet, connect to e-mail and social media and use other online applications such as web radio. Apple CarPlay is also included with full functionality for calls, navigation, music and

52

May 2018

iPhone integration. The infotainment system also includes a sophisticated telemetry function so drivers can record and compare speeds, times, lateral, and G force data. Two optional interior cameras allow the drivers’ experiences to be recorded. With only 20 coupes and 20 roadsters ever built, this hyperbeast with magnificently handcrafted body is not everyone’s cup of tea. Just as the Coupe version the Centenario Roadster will be produced as a limited edition of only 20 units to be delivered through 2017. All 40 Centenario models are sold, to collectors and Lamborghini enthusiasts around the world at a starting price of € 1.75 million for the Coupé and 2 million euros plus tax for the Roadster. Shown in Monterey in the special exterior color called “Argento Centenario”, clients can specify their Centenario to include any color and finish, such as exposed carbon fiber from Lamborghini’s Ad Personam personalisation programme. The Centenario continues Lamborghini’s strategy of producing one-off cars and exclusive limited editions, which allow scope for exploring design and technology possibilities while heightening brand awareness. Starting with the Reventón and including the Sesto Elemento, Aventador J and Veneno, every car has proven its instant appeal, achieved iconic status, and increased in value.

By Kenyia Gardner Although Lamborghini is well known for its supercars such as the Countach and Diablo, the company also has also dabbled in the sports utility vehicle side of the auto business. In 1977, the Italian automaker was contracted by Mobility Technology International to build what would basically be a classified as a large Jeep for the use of the military. The Lamborghini Cheetah, as the company’s initial product was called, was large but certainly not sluggish, about what you would expect from the legendary supercar manufacturer. After the first one was complete, however, the contract with MTI was cancelled, apparently because the vehicle was too basic for its needs. A second attempt at building an off-road vehicle was made with the Mimrans prototype SUV in 1981, but it too had problems, chiefly due to uncertain steering which stemmed from poor weight distribution. Next came the LM 002, which began to be produced shortly after the Mimrans project was cancelled and it actually went into production for several years, proving the old adage that the third time is a charm. A charm the LM 002 was, for it sported a front-engine design mounted on a steel tubular frame with glass reinforced plastic bonnet and roof, plus aluminum doors. Armed forces in the Middle East, led by Saudi Arabia, purchased several of the Lamborghini product, but its intended use as a replacement for the venerable Jeep never came to pass because of its 70

May 2018

high maintenance and repair costs. With a powerful quad-cam V-12 engine, all independent suspension, 11 inch wide alloy wheels with Kevlar-reinforced Pirelli tires and a ground clearance of nearly a foot, this off-roader has features rarely found on others of its type. Using its low first gear, this massive LM can climb slopes at angles that would initially seem impossible and go through mud and sand which would stop a lesser vehicle, and it in its time it was the fastest off-roader in production. Two problems with the vehicle, however, are the LM’s tendency to wander and poor gas mileage, as it only gets around 9.4 miles per gallon when not climbing. The LM’s plush leather interior lives up to its Lamborghini heritage, with four seats in the cabin and two seats on the back deck for riders, plus an excellent stereo system, power windows and seats, and air conditioning, a must for the hot deserts of the Middle East. While much more expensive than a Hummer, which beat out Lamborghini for the military contract work, this vehicle combines luxury with recreation and does it well. Don’t expect to see too many of these. Unlike AM General, which put out thousands of Hummers for both military and personal use, Lamborghini only made about 300 of this model, and only 28 are still in the U.S. Editor's Note: This story was originally writeen in 2004 and has never been published before.

Lister Thunder

May 2018

Exotic Cars Magazine

by Peter C. Sessler The latest introduction of the Lister Motor Company took place at the 2018 Historic Motorsport International at ExCel in London this past February. The wait was worth it, to be sure, as the new Lister is the most rapid, powerful and luxurious Lister ever made in the Company’s 65 year span. Only 99 examples of the Lister Thunder will be built, and considering its price at £139,950 ($197,177), the Lister Thunder is a modern supercar that can be easily be driven on the street. The Thunder supercar will join Lister’s manufacturing facility schedule which includes the first ever fully road-going version of the landmark Knobbly- which is being built to the model’s original 1950s specifications. Other recent significant Lister models are the continuation models, which include the magnesium-bodied Knobbly Stirling Moss Edition, and the aerodynamic Costin. The Thunder has a top speed in excess of 208mph, with a blistering 0-62mph acceleration in just over three seconds! The supercharged 5.0 liter V-8 is set to deliver 666 bhp. New Thunders will be built alongside each of these continuation Lister models at the historic George Lister Engineering factory in Cambridge, where the Company’s original chassis jigs are still used. Founded by talented businessman and racer Brian Lister in 1953, Cambridge-based Lister has always had strong competition ties to Jaguar. Its iconic Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ sports car- an aluminum bodied racer powered by a Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-type 3.4litre, straight-six engine- enjoyed notable track successes when

raced by Stirling Moss, among others, in the late 1950s. More recently, the Lister Storm, first launched 25 years ago in road car form, used Jaguar V12 power to win the FIA World GT Championship in 2000. As for design notes, the Thunder’s bespoke coachwork enhancements have been carefully overseen by Lister’s CEO and owner Lawrence Whittaker and have been produced to standards that match or exceed original equipment. The carbon fiber front bumper is custom made, with an extended splitter giving greater down force. Lister vents adorn the hood and stylish Lister decals fit neatly on the side panels of the car, with the grille center, decals and calipers exactly matching the interior combination. The rear bumper is also features a carbon fiber design, which houses the enlarged rear Lister carbon exhaust tips that give a thundery note when pressed. A solid brass Lister badge adorns the rear spoiler, chromed for the best effect. At the front, a beautifully enameled green and yellow racing Lister badge sits perfectly in the front grille. A carbon fiber hood will be available as an option, with a retro-fit carbon fiber kit also to be offered exclusively by Lister for existing Jaguar F-Type models from £19,950 ($28,000). The Lister’s custom interior is finished in the UK’s most expensive Bridge of Weir Nappa hide, and is available in 36 colors. Lister logos are stitched into the headrests and the seat pattern echo’s the car’s grille. The dashboard, door cards, roof lining and steering wheel are all hand stitched in matching Nappa leather, with the seats, dashboard and roof lining all all hand finished with a contrast stitching to match the accents of the exterior. hnished

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of the Lister Motor Company, says, “Like Brabus and AMG with Mercedes and Alpina with BMW, we are hoping to become synonymous once again with tuning Jaguar vehicles, giving customers new enhanced, bespoke performance and design alternatives to Jaguar’s acclaimed model program. Although we are not directly affiliated with Jaguar Land Rover, Lister has a Jaguar tuning heritage dating back 65 years.” To-date Lister remains unique in being the only automotive company making original specification continuation cars that are eligible for fully-legal registration and road use. Unlike other continuation specials, which are strictly limited to track use only, the road legal Lister Knobbly is fully eligible for IVA type approval.

70 Years of Porsche

By Kyle Bronson For the last 70 years Porsche has produced something for everyone. From 911 rear engine fanatics, to the racer enthusiast, they have been at the top of the purchase list for all types of people and have become a common name in the exotic car industry. Porsche over the last 70 years has become one of the most important and iconic automotive manufacturers in the industry, from the first 365, to today’s technical tour de force. Porsche has gained strength over strength over the last 70 years, the 918 spider is one amazing machine, this super car is just one of their many ways to show how far they have advanced. One of the world's most spectacular automobile museums is located directly next to the headquarters of Porsche AG. The Porsche Museum. “Those who have the good fortune to turn their dream into a business owe it to the world to be the custodians of such dreams.” This remark by Dr. Ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche could be considered the very cornerstone – at least in spirit – of the Porsche Museum. His dream did become reality. The 5,600 square metres of exhibition space in the futuristic museum building created by Viennese architect Delugan Meissl accommodate over 80 vehicles – from the first Porsche designs in the world to the latest generation of the Porsche 911. Porsche Museum: many visitors from around the world In the first year after it first opened on January 31, 2009 the Porsche Museum vividly evoked the appeal and diversity of the Porsche brand to over 700,000 visitors from all over the world. By December 2013, the Porsche Museum had welcomed two million visitors through its doors. It serves as a meeting point for 76

May 2018

international customers as well as many others from all over the world who are fascinated by Porsche sports cars, even if they do not drive a Porsche themselves. While the bold architecture of the building reflects Porsche’s distinctiveness, confidence and heritage, the exhibition keeps the history of the company every inch alive, with all the sports cars in the “Museum on Wheels” fully functional and capable of springing into life. That makes the museum suitable not just as an exhibition space, but also as a platform for communication – a core component of the regular dialog that Porsche maintains with the general public. Unlike other automotive museums, the Porsche Museum consciously rejects the “discovery zone” approach. At the Porsche Museum, the vehicles should be able to speak for themselves; the thematic thread is provided by the exhibits themselves, and not by any external prompts telling the visitor what they should think or feel. The museum furthermore embraces an educational mission to fulfil a trendsetting cultural function at the traditional Zuffenhausen location. Using state-of-the-art museum techniques, the exhibition conveys a wealth of historical and contemporary knowledge about the Porsche company. Depending on their individual interests, visitors can approach the exhibits and the company’s history from a variety of perspectives. Porsche deliberately avoids marketing-led declarations in its communication with visitors, instead placing the emphasis on its cultural mission to educate. The interior of the Porsche-Museum. In keeping with its pre-eminent position within the German automotive industry, Porsche uses the museum as a platform for informing national and international visitors about the history and achievements of the German automotive industry. Alongside its

Exotic Cars Magazine

thematic direction, the most notable attribute of the exhibition concept is its flexibility, as befits the Porsche brand. All vehicle exhibits are “mobile” in a very real sense. In other words, the exhibition itself and all the media installations can easily be reconfigured and the exhibits changed, to maintain a high level of variety and appeal. A chronological tour presents the history of motorsport and series vehicles of the company. Historical Archive, workshop for classic vehicles and gastronomic restaurant As well as the exhibition, the Historical Archive and the glass-fronted workshop for classic vehicles, the museum’s predominantly white interior houses a diverse range of eating and drinking establishments – Coffee Bar, Bistro and gastronomic restaurant – as well as large-capacity conference areas. The Porsche Museum can also be used as an event venue for conferences, film screenings and concerts, for example, without intruding on the main exhibition. The museum at Porscheplatz enjoys an auspicious place in German automotive history. This was where the former Porsche engineering office relocated, from Stuttgart city centre to Zuffenhausen Plant 1, as long ago as 1938. In that same year this was the birthplace of the model that ultimately evolved into the VW Beetle, followed in 1939 by the Type 64, the forerunner of all Porsche sports cars that was known as the “Berlin-Rome Car”. Sports cars sporting the world-famous Porsche crest have been built at Zuffenhausen since 1950.
