Published monthly by Exotic Cars LLC, and distributed online all over the world through zinio.com, issuu. com, magzster.com and pocketmags.com as well as our website at www.exoticcarsmagazine.com Subscription rates: $24.99 per year worldwide for digital only.

Welcome to our first online edition. We made huge changes to the October 2018 issue. We have been solely online since March 2001 and always wanted to have a print issue since our early days in Knoxville, Iowa and finally reached that goal in April of this year thanks to the generous help of an investor who is now a partner in the company. Due to the massive demand for digital content instead of print, we have decided to move to online publishing. All print subscribers will be given the choice of a full refund of their subscription minus the one or two issues they did receive, or a complimentary two-year subscription to our online publication instead of the one year they paid for. Why is this a better deal? First of all, instead of printing quarterly or bi-monthly, we will publishing monthly with all subscribers getting free downloads of the magazine along with full access to the website. What this means is twice the content, twice the frequency with no breaks over the summer, and all the exotic cars anyone could hope for inside the pages of our magazine. And more timely news and information about the exotic car industry. This includes the Paris Motor Show - which is still ongoing, SEMA, introductions of new cars less than a month after they are announced (print publications take much longer to reach newsstands), and other news that we can inform our readers about soon after or as it is happening, close to real-time! We also increased our coverage of the exotic lifestyle to include such stories as the DelMar Racetrack's Opening Day in California, new models of high-end exotic watches, profiles of famous personalities such as retired jockey Alex Solis, and a commentary on Trump’s proposed tax on European cars. We still have the cars but we now have increased coverage, bringing in stories written for past print prototypes that never hit the general market back in the early

and mid-2000s while we were still trying to put out a regular print publication. Those articles include, among others, a Rhode Island man’s desire to have a 308 Ferrari for 20 years before finally getting one in 2004. Also upcoming are pieces on the 2003 Lamborghini Murcielago, 2005 Geneva Motor Show, a 1982 gray market Porsche 930 that was imported into the US in 2002, and the Qvale Mangusta, a rare car built in Modena, Italy by American and Maserati importer Bruce Qvale and marketed under the Qvale brand. Having said all this, there’s a lot more on the way from Exotic with much more coverage than in the past and we even have a worldwide staff to help us bring you the latest in exotic car news and the latest models. Besides Pascal in Paris, we have Neil Winton in the UK, Sameer Shah in India (who has written the entire Makes and Models section on our website), Peter Sessler in Florida, Dee Seidel in California, and Zoe Zorka here at our home base in Utah. Zoe will be the host of our upcoming regular YouTube show and also writes stories about the luxury lifestyle she knows so well. So check us out both on our website and on several apps that are currently undergoing development for the Android, Apple, and Windows platforms. You can find subscription links not only on our website but on places such as www.issuu.com, www.magzter.com, www. Zinio.com and www.pocketmags.com, which is big in the European market. Instead of circulating only in the U.S., we'll be available in almost 200 countries by the end of October, which gives us a much larger potential readership than we ever dreamed of back in the early days of 2001. THE TRUMP TAX: WILL INCREASED TARIFFS ALTER THE AMERICAN DEMAND FOR EUROPEAN LUXURY CARS? By Zoe Zorka

Mercedes. BMW. Range Rover. Lamborghini. For decades, these names have been synonymous with luxury. Crafted by top engineers and designed to be aesthetically pleasing while also functionally solid, the top European brands have enjoyed consistent market demand both in Europe as well as the United States. Yet as President Trump pushes even harder for increased tariffs on steel and aluminum as well as imported European Unionassembled cars, the question is whether or not some of the wealthiest Americans will still be willing to pay for luxury. The reasons for purchasing a foreign car vary from person to person (that is, if you can get a buyer to give you an honest answer), but the underlying theme is generally the same: luxury and brand appeal. The numbers speak for themselves: the top three German manufacturers, Mercedes, BMW and VW’s Audi continue to dominate international high-end sales with Mercedes selling 2,084,000 premium vehicles, BMW 2,003,000, and Audi 1,868,000 in 2016 according to the University of DuisbergEssen’s Center for Automotive Research (CAR). Much of this success stems not only from the recognizable brand names, but also their entry into the growing SUV market- a market that is highly reliant on American consumerism. Germany alone ships approximately 600,000 automobiles to the U.S. every year. Additionally, German auto manufacturers’ plants in the United States were responsible for manufacturing more than 800,000 vehicles in 2017 as well as employing over 110,000 American workers. As the dynamic currently stands (as of summer 2018), the European Union imposes a 10 percent tariff on imported U.S. cars, while the U.S. currently imposes a 2.5 percent tariff on imported passenger cars, and a 25 percent tariff on pickup trucks imported from the EU. Trump’s plan would increase tariffs on European Union cars up to 20%. Odds are that a large majority of these additional costs would be passed onto the consumerdriving up prices for already pricey cars. While some economic experts predict that the increased tariffs will lead to a .2% drop in Germany’s GDP, others have more subjective opinions that have less to do with numbers and more to do with consumer tastes, preferences, and egos. “People will still buy German cars,” said Andreas Kramski, chief executive of Kramski Family, a leading producer of precision stampings, injection molds, and system parts for auto manufac-

turers worldwide. “It wouldn’t be very patriotic for an American to say, but it’s a matter of fact: German cars are just better.” Yet what Kramski fails to note is the fact that Germany and the United States do not coexist in a bubble, but rather as part of a larger global economy in which automobiles (like other major consumer goods) can be easily shipped around the world. As other global powers emerge and new consumers enter the marketplace, the trade war has been further compounded and extended beyond the European Union and United States. China, which led the world in economic growth for the year 2016, is currently the world’s largest automobile market thanks to a growth in the nation’s middle and upper class. This has resulted in a significant increase in the Chinese demand for the Mercedes-Benz line- so much so that China comprises 25% of the Mercedes-Benz market and the company has boosted their manufacturing operations in China over the past several years. While demand for all three lines increased worldwide, the North American market’s growth was not limited to the United States.

In 2016, both Mercedes-Benz and BMW delivered more cars than ever before to both Canada and Mexico, with 12.2% a 21.9% respective growth rates for Mercedes-Benz and 9.3% an 7.1% for BMW. Furthermore, a recent Washington Post article points out another complex variable: about 500,000 cars were exported to the United States from German plants in other countries, such as Mexico, meaning a breakdown of NAFTA could create even more confusion and uncertainty. Yet one thing remains certain- regardless of tariffs, European automakers will likely continue to thrive, even if doing so means adapting to new, non-American, markets. For Mercedes-Benz, this has meant adding more electronic and communications features to their vehicles to satisfy tastes within the large Chinese market while BMW ramps up efforts of their Mini line to meet demand within urban areas (specifically in the Southeast Asian and European markets) and all European luxury auto brands face increased pressure from the European Union to make more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly cars. Will this pressure to reduce one’s carbon footprint propel newcomers such as Tesla past the European luxury giants? Will Germany and other European Union countries cave to the president’s demands rather than risk losing American consumers? Only time will tell.

Industry News Paris Motor Show Preview By Pascal Biarrotte The 2018 Paris Show is about to open its doors in a mixed feeling of hate and love to the secular traditional cranking automobile in favour of fast emerging cleaner technologies and new softer driving habits. Times are changing fast as several manufacturers have already dropped their Diesel offers and we are now standing at the crossroads of a major change in motoring and everyone is not ready for it No wonder so many major manufacturers decided to skip the glamorous City of Lights as some large metropolises over Europe, with Paris as a leader; are doing their best to fight air pollution by trying to chase automobiles out of the city with so many restrictions your driving there becomes a miserable experience, Spotlights this year will be more than ever on full electric and on self driven projects with local Peugeot E-Legend leading the pack. Mercedes-Benz is also expected to exhibit a new and interesting SUV concept car.. To be noticed is the rebirth of Alpine with a long long waited all new A110 sporty berlinetta now in production line and marketed as a challenger to the Porsche Cayman Supercars, and that will be our focus, should as usual bring their share of dreams and innovation ... And don't forget Ferrari's limited edition Monza SP1 and SP2. The SP standing for number of seats that these cars have. Perhaps the major attraction for these cars is that Ferrari has equipped both with the most powerful engine they have ever put in a road car. The Italian super car manufacturer took its 6.5 liter V12 engine from the 812 Superfast and tweaked it enough to reach 809 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque, which propels the model to 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds. All with no windshield! Anyway, check all three out along with the Peugeot E-Legend at the show that opened to the public October 4.

Luxury Timepieces

Time to Kill: Luxury watch brands put a modern twist on timeless classics By Zoe Zorka Staff Writer

“What time is it?” Several decades ago, had you asked any man this, he would have lifted his wrist to check his watch. He would have read the numbers etched into his timepiece, temporarily mesmerized by the second hand ticking around the watch face to a perfectly synchronized beat. A man’s watch said a great deal about him and was largely considered to be reflective of not just his position in society, but his personality and temperament as well. Today, the smartphone has replaced the watch’s functional aspect, yet the watch remains a crucial part of every man’s wardrobe. A recent Esquire piece noted that a quality wrist watch is the epitome of male fashion due to its classic, understated, and minimalist natureessentially embodying the archetype of manliness. While watch trends have changed significantly over the years from the pocket watch of the late 19th century to the neon glow of 1990’s digital timepieces to the purely decorative purpose that watch’s serve today. After all, few use their wristwatch to time much of anything anymore, yet most men still have at least one watch in their repertoire. Unlike wedding rings, which men are often content to wear for 30 plus years without an upgrade, the watch is the one piece of jewelry that discerning gentlemen will take the time to research and make informed purchase decisions. And in 2018, as fashion has superseded function, today’s luxury wristwatch designs combine modern technology with a vintage vibe to offer limitless (and fashionable) options for high-end consumers. Patek Philippe Reference 5208 Grand Complication Combining artistry and skilled watchmaking, Patek Philippe has mastered the creation and design of the self-proclaimed “most complicated portable timepiece.” Functionally, Patek Phillippe watches boast innovative functional features such as the moonphase indicator, leap year indicator, hours and minutes of mean solar time, and cathedral chimes as well as some of the most intricate design features found on any type of jewelry. The Reference 5208 Grand Complication model is housed in a rose-gold case and sapphire-crystal case back and is paired with an ebony black sunburst dial. The 719-part movement features mechanisms that allow for a moonphase indicator, leap year indicator, a minute repeater, a monopusher chronograph, an instantaneous perpetual calendar with aperture displays, and displays hours and minutes of mean solar time. The Reference 5208 Grand Complication is also one of the rare ultra-complicated calibers to be self-winding. Price: Rumored to be approximately $1,150,000 Chronoswiss Flying Grand Regulator Limited Edition For the gentleman who wants to make a bold statement, this red-faced timepiece will definitely do the trick! Grounded in stainless steel, the watch is fluted on the side with domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal and features an intricately constructed, three-dimensional dial with a signature guilloche pattern. Yet while the watch face’s pattern is mesmerizing In its own right, the texture and quality of the band, made from Louisiana Alligator Leather Hornback skin, cannot be ignored either. As an added bonus, this watch is extremely rare as only 30 were made.

Price: Rumored to be approximately $1.2 million

IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph Perfect for the sailing enthusiast or anyone who wants to look like they belong to a yacht club, this watch is an excellent addition to a summer wardrobe. With 38 jewels providing an understated sense of elegance, this automatic, self-winding time piece features a dark blue face meant to evoke feelings of being at sea and is encased in sapphire glass with arched-edge, antireflective coating on both sides. While the watch comes with a standard blue rubber strap, IWC also has a great deal of customizable watch bands. Furthermore, this watch isn’t just inspired by nautical design. It can actually be around water as it is water resistant up to six feet. Price: Approximately $12,500

While technology continues to advance, these watches, along with the hundreds of other quality mens’ watches on the market today, prove that no amount of smartphone features can replace a timeless classic. The watch has stood the test of time and will likely be around until the Aeternitas Mega’s end of infinity.

RIMAC CONCEPT ONE

Ferrari 488 Pista

By Sameer Shah Rimac Automobili unveiled the production version of the world's first all-electric hypercar, the Concept One, at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Rimac Concept One was born of the idea that an electric powertrain can make a sportscar not only faster but also more adjustable, agile and fun. Rimac Automobili was founded to push the limits of technology and electric powertrains - the Concept One combines all the know-how, technology and experience that the company has created since its founding.

12

October 2018

The Rimac Concept One is powered by four extremely powerful permanent magnet electric motors, one for each wheel, located in the centre of both axles. The architecture is radically different compared to traditional combustion engines so a completely new vehicle platform had to be developed to use all the advantages that such a layout brings. In order to reduce weight and make it possible to package such a powerful powertrain system into the chassis, all powertrain systems were developed alongside within the same team to enable a high degree of integration between the components.

The result is a perfect weight distribution and extremely low centre of gravity. Distributing a total of 800 kW / 1088 HP and 1600 Nm of torque, the Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring (R-AWTV) system precisely calculates the optimum torque for each wheel. R-AWTV uses inputs from several precise sensors strategically positioned around the chassis and suspension to calculate the optimal torque distribution between the wheels through complex mathematical models and control algorithms. The system provides unseen flexibility and grip by controlling each motor individually one hundred times per second. This enables the Concept One to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 2,6 seconds and, to 200 km/h in 6,2 and to 300 km/h in mind-blowing 14,2 seconds. The R-AWTV functions as a traction control, stability control and "electric ABS" system that also command the 4-wheel regenerative braking of up to 400 kW that works together with the carbon-ceramic braking system. To match the character, innovation excellence and sleek design of the Concept One, a truly bespoke infotainment system was developed and manufactured in-house. All vehicle dynamics and powertrain functions such as the Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring System are controlled through physical buttons, machined from billet aluminium while secondary functions are controlled through the central touch-screen. The system shows an abundance of information through beautifully optimised graphics and gives insights into the Concept One's nervous system. Browsing through the menus on the central display, the driver can change the settings of the Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring system, brake force distribution, torque distribution, as well as various other functions. By changing the settings, the driver alternates the nature of the car depending on his preferences, from a calm and neutral setting to a track-oriented setup or the extreme drift mode that helps experienced drivers to have fun on a closed track. From basic energy consumption information via regenerative braking and Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring settings to telemetry data - the Rimac Infotainment system gathers information from over 14

October 2018

The invaluable experience gathered during the Pikes Peak project has been implemented in the development of the Concept One's R-AWTV system. The result is a refined, yet powerful system that works in the background to enhance the natural potential of the vehicle. Compared with a conventional powertrain with the four-wheel drive where the torque on each wheel is controlled either by braking through a hydraulic braking system or cutting the power of the engine and thus the power on all four wheels, the Concept One does not have to make any compromises. R-AWTV can reduce or raise the torque on any wheel at any given moment, depending on the situation and driver input, without any limitations. R-AWTV also increases safety as it can react faster and use the potential of each tire better than traditional stability systems. A dynamic "electric ABS" is moreover included in the R-AWTV system. Depending on the wishes and driving skills of the driver, the R-AWTV can change the character of the car. The driver can choose between four driving modes: comfort, control, track and drift mode, or set-up a custom setting with customised power distribution, regenerative braking settings, etc. The R-AWTV can also be completely turned off. The driver can choose the driving modes via knobs on the central console. Depending on the chosen mode the car will act differently on the limit of grip. It can tend to understeer, be neutral, or for the more experienced drivers, have a tendency to oversteer and thus enable more aggressive driving style through corners.

500 different sensors and projects them in beautiful graphics on the central display in real time. The data is stored in the internal memory and sent to the Cloud via high-speed 4G Internet link. The telemetry data can be analysed during or after a lap on the racetrack, via the touch-screen, a PC or smartphone.

Powerful Powertrain Despite having full torque from zero RPM, electric motors still need a transmission to meet maximum efficiency and performance. Most electric vehicles use a single-speed transmission that forces their designers to compromise between acceleration and top-speed. Rimac Automobili is all about innovation and pushing the limits - not about compromises. They wanted to achieve lightning-fast acceleration and a top speed worthy of a true supercar. In order to meet those targets, we had to come up with a unique solution. Each of the four Concept One's motors is coupled to a proprietary gearbox system. While the front motors feature single-speed gearboxes, the rear motors carry something truly unique - a two-speed double-clutch gearbox on each side. A proprietary carbon fibre double clutch system with Formula 1 clutch-disks enables either extremely fast or smooth and comfortable shifts that are supported by synchronising motor speed for interruption-free shifting. While the dual-speed transmission unlocks new performance levels at any speed, the Concept One can be driven in one gear all the time as it has enough torque to outperform almost any sports car even if driven in one gear only.

RIMAC Battery pack Electric vehicle batteries are usually challenged by capacity requirements. While it is challenging to develop a battery system that holds sufficient energy for an acceptable range, Rimac Automobili has faced an additional challenge: delivering one megawatt of power. The Rimac Concept One's battery pack is designed to deliver 1000 kW or 1MW of power during acceleration and to absorb 400 kW during braking. A unique liquid thermal management and low-resistance conducting system had to be developed in order to master this challenge. The result is a highly advanced high-performance battery pack that is designed for demanding track- use, high power delivery and safety. Each of the 8450 battery cells is individually controlled through the in-house developed Rimac Battery Management System, which ensures optimal conditions for a long battery life and long-term performance. RIMAC All Wheel Torque Vectoring Conceived in a road car, perfected on the most demanding road in the world - the hill climb to Pikes Peak. Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring system is designed and developed by Rimac Automobili and is currently the only system in the world with this principle available on a production car. The advantages of the R-AWTV over conventional drivetrains was most noticeable on the most demanding hill-climb race in the world - Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado. Nobuhiro Monster Tajima drove the Tajima Rimac e-Runner, a race car developed by Rimac Automobili, on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2015 and finished in front of all combustion engine powered cars.

The Rimac Concept One will be produced in the total of eight units. Rimac Automobili's philosophy of collaboration is to share ideas and technologies with other manufacturers in various industries to accelerate the shift to a more efficient and better transportation system. As a showcase of its main business, Rimac Automobili also displayed its technologies and abilities that are available to other companies. A special edition of the Greyp G12S bike, made by Rimac's sister company Greyp Bikes, was also be shown in Geneva Motor Show next to the Concept S, an extreme version of the Concept One. By Dee Seidel Contributing Writer “And They’re Off” as The San Diego Horseracing Summer Season Begins Opening Day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, also known as the Del Mar Turf Club, is considered to be one of the official kickoffs for Summer in Del Mar, California. This year, Wednesday, July 18th was set as the first day of the Summer horse racing season and the day begins with major local news coverage as behind the scenes personnel, such as Mr. Leif Dickinson, the Turf and Landscape Supervisor, makes sure the environment is ready and in place for the first race at 2 pm. The slogan and song originally sung by Bing Crosby, invite you to come to where “the Turf Meets the Surf.” This is the season when locals and those from out of town arrive and enjoy the opening of the doors and horse stalls for another exciting season of horse racing. The estimated attendance for this 18

Summer season’s opening was projected to be more than 40,000 people. The Valet parking lot stayed busy receiving the various exotic cars being driven to the event on this warm, over-cast day in North County San Diego. One of the regular attendees, Ms. Susan McLaughlin arrived in her convertible Bentley and was looking forward to joining her friends inside the Turf Club. The estimated economic impact of the Del Mar racing season for San Diego is around $100 million with a payroll of close to $33 million. The area hotels, restaurants and ancillary services look forward to the influx of visitors to the Track. Last year, when the Breeder’s Cup was held at Del Mar, the economic impact was estimated to be an additional $100 million for the surrounding hotels, restaurants, shops and services. The well-dressed, avid racing fans gather at all levels of the Turf Club, which overlooks the Paddock area where the horses for the first race are paraded around the path for inspection and assessment for the best guess as to which horses will show up strong for

the day’s events. It became a challenging day for Mr. Robert “Bob” Baffert, an American racehorse trainer who trained the 2015 Triple Crown winner “American Pharoah” and 2018 Triple Crown winner “Justify.” Baffert’s horses have won five Kentucky Derbies, seven Preakness Stakes, three Belmont Stakes and three Kentucky Oaks. “Justify” experienced an injured ankle but Baffert also felt the injury could have occurred earlier, possibly even during a transport between locations, so Mr. Baffert had elected to not race him that day. Reports are that he may retire Justify. Mr. Mac McBride, the Director of Media, shared insights about the “silks,” as the uniforms are called that the horse owners select for the jockey to wear. On Opening Day, there were 2,000 sets of silks ready for the races. There have not been any duplicate color and design combinations since around 1880! The Owners pick the colors and images for their jockeys to wear. The designs and colors for the silks have to be approved by the Jockey Club in New York. There is also long-standing and fun tradition before the races begin. Many of the ladies and gentlemen who prepare for this day well in advance also look forward to seeing the creativity and imagination of those who display their creations for the Annual Hat Contest, which takes place before the races begin. The winners receive various courtesies and gifts for future use.

For those who want to extend the celebration and fun of being at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club beyond Opening Day, Executive Chef Brian Malarkey delivers a beautiful Sunday Brunch with a different menu each week. As one of San Diego’s most celebrated chefs, the $100.00 per person price provides your Turf Club Admission, choice of appetizer, entree and dessert in addition to the bottomless mimosas, their version of the bloody mary, the “Del Mary,” or Chandon. Early reservations are recommended. The 2018 Del Mar Summer Concert Series also continues celebrations with live concerts from rock to reggae on Friday and Saturday nights following the races. Admission to the Racetrack includes standing room at the concerts. You can also elect to purchase reserved seats at a table for four or individual seats. Del Mar also offers many other venues for entertainment and dining after the races. L’Auberge Del Mar at 1540 Camino Del Mar has “award-winning culinary eats, live music and signature cocktails and you can take a free shuttle to and from the race track” Other great dining venues include Red Tracton’s, located across from the track, Sbicca at 215 15th Street, Del Mar, Fidels Mexican Restaurant at 607 Valley Avenue in Solana Beach, Pacific Coast Grill south of Cardiff Reef and Truluck’s Seafood, Steak and Crab House on La Jolla Village Drive.

McLaren Senna Carbon Theme by MSO

October 2018

Exotic Cars Magazine

By Sameer Shah Staff Writer The new McLaren Senna is set to raise heartrates at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as it bares all to appear in Visual Carbon Fibre. The McLaren Senna Carbon Theme by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is one of five themes developed by MSO for a car that has been the centre of attention since the first images were released in December. Comprising 67 parts, the full body set takes almost 1,000 hours to produce, with the Visual Carbon Fibre exterior as its most obvious individual feature. Solar Yellow detailing on the sill exteriors, rear wing and front active aero blades - a process that accounted for almost 250 hours of MSO time - combines with Laurel Green brake calipers in recognition of the helmet colours of the legendary Brazilian

Formula 1 racing driver. The colours are carried through to the interior of the car, with the door gas strut in Laurel Green and the contrast stitching on the Carbon Black Alcantara trim on seats, door inners and facia. The steering wheel also has a leather center band in a similar yellow hue. Both seats feature a Senna 'S' on the headrest and the same detail is repeated in satin finish Visual Carbon Fibre on the end plates of the rear wing, a result achieved using a highly specialised process that sees each matte-finished logo embedded into the gloss carbon fibre panel. One of the front fenders proudly displays the Senna brand. "The McLaren Senna customers in the process of specifying their own, personalised cars are almost without exception commissioning an elevated level of MSO content, so we are definitely appealing to our target audience," explained Ansar Ali, Managing Director, McLaren Special Operations.

"With the car having generated so much interest since its unveiling in December, we knew we needed to produce something very special in order to showcase the unique talents of McLaren Special Operations; the McLaren Senna Carbon Theme by MSO at the Geneva Motor Show is exactly the kind of project we thrive on delivering and once customers have had the opportunity to view it in person, I would not be at all surprised to see a rise in expressions of interest for MSO Visual Carbon Fibre cars similar to this one." McLaren Special Operations is also taking the opportunity to introduce a new McLaren Senna wheel option. The standard wheel is available in three finishes, but the new MSO 7-Spoke, Hybrid Carbon Fibre Wheel is the only alternative design available from McLaren for the car. The centre-lock wheel is a forged aluminium/carbon fibre rim component that at 7.5kg (front wheel) without a tyre fitted, is up to 10 per cent lighter than the standard-fit wheel. Benefitting dynamic performance by reducing unsprung weight, the carbon fibre hybrid wheels offer a 10-15 per cent reduction in rotating inertia, improving acceleration, braking and steering responses. The MSO 7-Spoke Hybrid Carbon Fibre Wheel, which also offers McLaren Senna customers a further opportunity to person-

alise their purchase, is a retailer-fit only option that will be available to order soon in either Diamond Cut or Stealth finish. The Memphis Red and Vega Blue satin finish centre lock wheel nuts fitted to respectively the left- and right-hand sides of the McLaren Senna Carbon Theme car are available now to MSO Bespoke order. Legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it, the new McLaren Senna was designed and developed from the outset to excel on a circuit and as a result has an uncompromised performance focus that is reflected in its appearance. The aggressive looks are the strongest expression yet of McLaren's 'form follows function' philosophy and McLaren Special Operations is already seeing significant interest from McLaren Senna buyers wanting to make their cars even more distinctive. Just 500 examples of the McLaren Senna will be produced and all are already assigned. Each vehicle is priced at ÂŁ750,000 and will be hand-assembled by specialists at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey, England, in a process taking close to 300 hours. Cars commissioned from McLaren Special Operations will take considerably longer to build and carry a financial premium; the bespoke personalisation carried out on the McLaren Senna Carbon Theme by MSO, for example, adds a little under ÂŁ300,000 to the price.

One feature that is quite unique is the Electric Door Assist. The close Assist functionality can be activated by sensors located on the exterior door handle or by using the exterior buttons. These are featured both on the outside and inside of the Cullinan. The Coach Doors on the new Cullinan are expected to be among the World’s first SUV rear coach doors, providing a level of accessibility unique to the Rolls-Royce. These doors have been extended below the sills of the car, wrapping around the sills and ensuring that they are alway clean and protected from outside elements, thereby removing any chance of getting your clothes dirty while entering or exiting the Cullinan. The rear doors are hinged and have the same automatic closure feature as the front doors.Once you are outside of the vehicle, one simply touches the door handle with a finger on a particular spot and the doors will open or close. There is even an umbrella inside the driver’s side passenger door! The door sills in the entry of each door have the Cullinan name embossed in aluminum and are lighted. Another unique feature is that the Cullinan allows the driver to set the height of the SUV tailgate, which has a unique operation in case the vehicle is entering a lower clearance ceiling height in a garage to avoid the tailgate from opening too high. The tailgate

system has a clamshell design, meaning the top opens first with the split bottom section opening after the top is cleared. You also have the option to change the height of the rear load floor with the button on the driver door panel. Therefore, if one is loading items into the rear of the Cullinan SUV you can lower the rear seats simultaneously or raise the load floor to match the level of the lower seats or lower the floor to accommodate larger items. The first allocation of the 2019 Cullinan is expected to arrive at the O’Gara La Jolla, California dealership in early Q4 with a starting price around $325k. The time from order to delivery of your new Cullinan is approximately 6 months. To inquire about a Rolls Royce Cullinan, please call RollsRoyce La Jolla at (858) 454-1800 and ask to speak with a Brand Manager. By Sameer Shah Since the first reveal of the Aston Martin Valkyrie (AM-RB 001) hypercar in July 2016, Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing have been working intensively to further develop the Valkyrie’s aerodynamics, body styling and cockpit packaging. The teardrop-shaped cockpit’s upper body surfaces and lower tub contours follow the envelope of space available between the huge full length Venturi tunnels that run either side of the cockpit floor. Drawing huge quantities of air beneath the car to feed the rear diffuser, these tunnels are the key to generating the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s extraordinary levels of downforce while keeping the upper body surfaces free from additional aerodynamic devices that would spoil the purity of the styling. To maximise interior space the seats are mounted directly to the tub, with occupants adopting a reclined ‘feet-up’ position reminiscent of today’s Formula One and Le Mans Prototype race cars, ensuring driver and passenger are extremely safe, perfectly supported and feel completely at one with the car. A four-point harness comes as standard, while an optional six-point harness will be offered for those who intend to do more track driving. The Aston Martin Design team were keen to keep distractions to a minimum and focus the driver on the road ahead. To this end all switchgear is located on the steering wheel, with all the vital signs shown on a single OLED display screen. 32

October 2018

The steering wheel is also detachable, both to aid ingress and egress, and to serve as an additional security device. Great attention has been taken with the glasshouse design to ensure forward and peripheral side-to-side vision is virtually uninterrupted. To avoid any unwanted aerodynamic disturbance or stylistic ‘clutter’ traditional door mirrors have been replaced by discreetly mounted rear facing cameras in each of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s flanks. These feed two displays which are positioned at the base of each A-post to mimic the view provided by conventional door mirrors. The all-enveloping bodywork and roof-mounted engine air intake means there is no rear window, negating the requirement for a rearview mirror. These requirements have been faithfully incorporated into the design by the Aston Martin Design Team in a genuine case of form following function. One of the biggest changes in this latest model are openings in the body surface between the cockpit and front wheel arches. Designers found that they were the key to achieving considerable gains in front downforce, so it was then the job of the Aston Martin Design Team to integrate these new apertures into the overall design and ensure they had aesthetic merit as well as aerodynamic function. While aerodynamics and downforce are the dominant story, Aston Martin Valkyrie features some delightful details. Some of the most striking are the headlights, which take inspira tion from the pure functionality of a Formula One car’s components. Aston Martin’s designers stripped things back to the bare essentials, celebrating the engineering rather than concealing it behind cladding. With the low and high beam elements attached to an

Exotic Cars Magazine

intricate exposed anodised aluminium frame not only are the headlamp units a work of art, but they are 30-40 percent lighter than the lightest series production headlamps available to Aston Martin. The same approach has been taken with the Aston Martin ‘wings’ badge that adorns the nose. With the regular badge considered too heavy, and a simple sticker not befitting for a car of the Valkyrie’s quality and cutting-edge nature, the Design Team came up with a chemical etched aluminium badge just 70 microns thick. That’s 30 per cent thinner than a human hair, and a remarkable 99.4 per cent lighter than the regular enamel wings badge. The badge (nicknamed the ‘lacewing’) is then attached to the painted body and covered with a perfectly smooth coat of lacquer. Further detail innovation can be found at the rear of the car, with the center high mounted stop light (CHMSL). Mounted on the tip of the small shark’s fin that runs down the spine of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s airbox and rear bodywork, the light is just 5.5mm wide and 9.5mm high. Illuminated by a red LED it is the world’s smallest CHMSL and evidence of how every element of the car is scrutinised in the pursuit of eliminating unnecessary weight and drag. Aston Martin Creative Director of Exterior Design Miles Nurnberger said: “I would say we’re around 95 per cent of the way there with the exterior design. Much of what you see is actually the structure of the car, so this had to be signed-off relatively early in the project. The remaining areas of non-structural bodywork are still subject to evolution and change as Adrian continues

to explore way of finding more downforce. The new outlets in the body are a case in point. Ordinarily the last thing we'd want to do to one of our surfaces is cut a hole in it, but these vents work the front wings so much harder that they've found a significant gain in front downforce. The fact that they are so effective gives them their own functional beauty, but we've finessed them without impacting on their functionality. That they also serve as windows through which to view the fabulous wing section front wishbones is a welcome bonus!"

Denise (Dee) Seidel Contributing Writer for Exotic Cars Magazine Mr. Alex Solis was greeted or acknowledged by everyone he passed on the day of this interview inside the Jockey Room at The Del Mar Racetrack. It was around 11 a.m. when we sat down to get acquainted. Alex was born March 25, 1964 in Panama City, Panama and grew up poor on a farm in San Carlos, where he spent a lot of time around horses. His first visit to a race track was at age 13. He was so fascinated that he enrolled in Jockey School the next year! Within two years, Alex became the leading apprentice jockey in Panama. In 1982, he came to the United States unable to speak English and with only $700 in his possession. Alex came across the Calder Race Course in Florida, where he gained the nickname El Maestrito (“The Maestro”) as the result of his achievements and success. When he was interviewed, he told people that he improved his English by listening to music and watching American television programs. Alex rose to prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness Stakes with a horse named Snow Chief. He continued to be persistent and consistent with his determination to focus on winning. He said that he has always been “goal-oriented,” and continues to “seek his purpose in life and looks forward to each new journey.”

In 1991 Alex came in third in the Derby on a horse named Mane Minister and he came in third on the same horse in the Belmont Stakes. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness with Captain Bodgit in 1997, second in the Derby with Victory Gallop in 1998 and second in the Belmont and the Derby with Aptitude in 2000. Solis has continued on to win Breeder’s Cup races being ranked fourth nationally when he closed out 2003 with the purse earnings career-best of $16,304,252. There were more wins in between, however, in 2010, he rode Mandurah to a new world record for a mile on the Turf at Monmouth Park with a record of 1:31.23. One of the things that Alex said he truly enjoys is the thrill of going to the Winner’s Circle when he is riding. As of 2017, he has earned 5,035 wins! What is amazing is how the horses to be raced are selected. Considerations include the pedigree, condition, surface of the ground and as Solis collaborates with the trainers, “finding a friend” in a horse that has a good chance to win. In 2002, Solis was inducted into the Calder Race Course Hall of Fame. He enjoyed winning the Breeder’s Cup Turf and Breeder’s Cup Classic, both in 2003. A serious riding injury sidelined him in 2004 at Del Mar when the incident left him with a broken back. The surgery involved two titanium rods and eight screws.

Over the years of racing, he had also experienced broken bones, toes, fingers and his left leg. This time, he would be out of commission for eight months. When Alex senior rode a filly named Irish Mission to victory in 2012 on the Woodbine turf, he won the Breeder’s Stakes. That win etched his first ever Canadian Triple Crown race victory. In 2014, Alex was elected to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame and earned his 5,000th North American racing win at the Santa Anita Park, near Hollywood, CA. on January 1, 2015. He was only the 29th jockey to even achieve this level. On April 30, 2015, Solis was appointed to the California Horse Racing Board by Governor Jerry Brown. Alex would fill the seat vacated by Ms. Bo Derek. His appointment was confirmed and he is still on the Board today. The fans may not recall that Alex owned a couple of exotic cars along his career. Years ago, he and fellow Jockey Gary Stevens decided to go out and buy one of the first street legal Viper automobiles. Following his Viper, Solis owned a couple of 911 Porsche vehicles as well as a Jaguar, and his favorite, a BMW 650. What does he drive now?? Alex said “since I am is a grandpa now, I drive a sensible vehicle like the Lexus.” Alex Solis is now focused on continuing his on-site education and experiences to become a certified horse trainer under the tutelage of the Hall of Fame Trainer, Richard Mandella, who currently oversees about 40 horses. Part of this training includes a lot of the work that is done even before the jockey/rider sees the horse for the race. For example, feeding the horses, set up tack equipment, and grooming the horses. He has been developing his skills for months and will make the transition to full Trainer at the completion of the new processes and schedule. As of this article, there are about 1800 horses that train at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club among the various trainers. Here are a few interesting points you may not have seen or heard.. straight from Alex’s mouth, from spontaneous questions about Alex, the person.

Bugatti Divo By Sameer Shah Staff Writer At the exclusive automotive event “The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering” in Monterey, California, Bugatti presented its latest model as a world premiere. With the Divo, the French luxury brand has developed a super sports car tuned for agility, nimbleness and optimum handling performance on winding roads. It is powered by Bugatti’s iconic eight-litre W16 engine with a power output of 1,500 PS. The aerodynamics of the model has been intensively fine-tuned and the suspension and chassis settings have been modified. As a result, the Bugatti Divo is 35 kilograms (77 lbs) lighter and has 90 kilograms (198 lbs) more downforce than the standard Chiron. The lateral acceleration of the Divo has been boosted to 1.6 g. Its maximum speed is limited to 380 km/h (236 mph) and the Divo can lap the Nardò handling circuit in southern Italy eight seconds faster than the Chiron. The series will only consist of 40 vehicles. Upon the start of presentations to selected customers, the strictly limited small series, with a net unit price of €5 million, sold out immediately. President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. Stephen Winkelmann said “The Bugatti team was also very eager to implement a project like this.” It was therefore decided to build a super sports car with a different character from the Chiron which would still be immediately recognizable as a Bugatti. With the Divo, Bugatti is also reviving its coach building tradition. In its first few decades, the French luxury brand had considerable success with bodies built to its own design and installed on existing chassis. The Bugatti Divo represents the modern interpretation of the brand’s coach building tradition “The modern interpretation of coach building gave us engi-

neer’s new freedom,” says Stefan Ellrott, Head of Technical Development at Bugatti. “The step that we have taken with the Divo in terms of agility and high-performance cornering dynamics can be compared with the overall development from the Veyron to the Chiron.” A sophisticated aerodynamics programme makes for optimum vehicle cooling and 90 kilograms more downforce. The aerodynamic properties of the Divo were improved by a considerable amount of detailed work. The front cover is equipped with air intakes which reduce the effective cross-sectional area of the vehicle at the same time as ensuring improved air flow at the front and increasing aerodynamic efficiency. An optimized “air curtain” makes for better air flow over the front and rear sections of the car’s sides. The newly-designed, wide front spoiler provides higher downforce and guides more air to the front air inlets. The cooling system therefore receives a higher mass flow and overall cooling performance is improved. The brakes are cooled by four independent air sources on each side of the vehicle: air flows in from the high-pressure area above the front bumper, the inlets on the front wings, one inlet on the front radiator and the diffusers ahead of the tyres. Vanes direct the cold air from these areas onto the brake discs. A heat shield carries the hot air out through the wheels. This means that the brakes do not overheat and the tyre temperature is always kept in the optimum range. This system, which is already used on the Chiron, receives additional support from the vacuum generated by the air curtain on the tyres in the case of the Divo. In addition, the wheel arches are ventilated via slats on the wings. The roof of the Bugatti Divo has been designed to form a NACA air duct, a flow-optimized air inlet. In combination with the specially designed engine compartment cover, this ensures a very high air mass flow to the engine com-

partment, playing a key role in temperature management in this area of the vehicle. The rear end of the Bugatti Divo features a new, height-adjustable rear spoiler which functions as an air brake when turned forwards and is set to different angles for the individual driving modes. The rear spoiler has a width of 1.83 metres (72”) and is therefore 23 percent wider than on the Chiron. The wider spoiler improves efficiency and results in higher air brake performance as well as significantly more downforce. The downforce is also boosted by the rear diffuser which has been entirely redesigned for greater efficiency and accommodates four tailpipes. The total downforce generated is 456 kilograms, 90 kg more than on the Chiron. New chassis and suspension settings as well as weight reduction make the Divo a star performer on corners The main objective of chassis development work was to improve cornering dynamics; the Bugatti Divo was to be sharper, more agile and more nimble. For this purpose, the camber was increased. As a result the maximum speed of the Bugatti Divo is limited to 380 km/h. In contrast to the Chiron, there is therefore no Top Speed mode. As regards lateral acceleration, the Divo reaches 1.6 g. These changes alone ensure a perceptibly different driving experience on winding roads. The steering and suspension have been set to ensure more direct response and significantly sportier driving behaviour in all modes (EB, Autobahn and Handling). The Bugatti Divo is 35 kilograms lighter than the Chiron. The weight reduction is the result of a number of lightweight design modifications including new lightweight wheels and a carbon fibre intercooler cover. Weight was also saved by the fixing of the front diffuser flaps, a reduction in the amount of insulation material used and the installation of a lighter sound system. In order to reduce the weight, stowage compartments on the central console and in the door trims have also been omitted. The Bugatti Divo can therefore lap the Nardò handling circuit eight seconds faster than the Chiron.

New progressive design language underlines the inner values of the Divo. A new suit of clothes for a new character “The Divo is a further example of our design philosophy ‘Form follows Performance’. In this case, the engineers and designers aimed to create a vehicle focusing on cornering speeds and lateral dynamics,” says Achim Anscheidt, Director of Design of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., describing the design language of the new Bugatti. “The Divo project was also a welcome opportunity for our team to add a modern chapter to the coach building story of Bugatti which had been so successful in the early years of the brand”. The outer skin of the Divo was designed in an uncompromising way to emphasize lateral acceleration. The main objective was to achieve optimum aerodynamic and thermodynamic efficiency. At the same time, the Bugatti Divo represents a new styling approach which the design team has developed especially for a coach-built Bugatti and which is distinguished from the modern core products of the brand. The slimmer side line of the Divo helps make the vehicle look lower and longer. The new proportions allow a visual horizontal division of the body, which is reinforced by a special colour scheme. The top, more elegant section is painted with a matt finish in a silver colour “Titanium Liquid Silver” developed especially for the Divo. This effectively underpins the sculptural, muscular form of the car. The long domed areas with their smooth surfaces along the C-pillar and the rear side sections optically shift the driver’s cab forwards. This gives the Divo an extremely dynamic appearance even when the vehicle is standing still. The lower part of the sides has more of a functional, technical design, reinforcing the car’s forceful appearance and giving it a confident stance on the road. This section features exposed carbon fibre tinted in a petroleum blue shade, “Divo Carbon”, developed especially for this model. An entirely new architecture was developed for the front of the car. There are additional air inlets for brake cooling. The new, vertically oriented front lights with daytime running light on the outer edge in each case give the Divo an appearance of

greater width. With a light opening which is only 35 millimetres (1 3/8”) flat, the extremely compact, lightweight LED headlights move into a new technical dimension. A light animation developed especially for the Divo underlines the distinctive signature of the front end. The horizontal split into a lower carbon and an upper matt silver section also makes the Divo look lower and underlines the optical impression of width. The NACA air inlet on the roof creates an optical connection with the air outlet in the centre of the front cover and guides the air towards the rear spoiler. The fact that the central line runs from the front over the roof to the rear spoiler is not only a reminiscence of Bugatti’s legendary past but also serves a function. This configuration prevents air eddies from forming over the vehicle, creating turbulence on the rear spoiler. One highlight at the rear of the vehicle is definitely the new, highly sophisticated 3-D rear light. This is actually part of the rear grille, which is partly produced by a 3-D printing process and has special lightweight fins with a variety of sizes. A total of 44 of these fins light up, forming the rear light of the Divo. At the outer edge, the fins become wider, creating a more intensive light. Towards the centre of the vehicle, they are narrower, resulting in gradual fading of the light. The result is a striking appearance which means that the Divo is also unmistakable from the rear. The two-tone colour scheme also intensifies the forceful impression created by the rear. The fenders are painted in “Titanium Liquid Silver” with a matt finish and are optically distinguished from the parts which control airflow at the rear end. Air outlets, rear spoiler and diffuser have a carbon finish. “Divo Racing Blue”, 40

a bright turquoise blue shade developed especially for the Divo, underlines the three-dimensional character of the three surfaces leading to the air inlets and outlets on the front, sides and rear, creating dynamically contrasting effects. The technical character of the colour scheme and materials used for the exterior is continued in the interior. A matt version of the exclusive high-gloss carbon fibre used on the exterior is to be found in the interior. The colour effects of the carbon tint and exterior paintwork are reflected on a 1:1 basis by the dark “Divo Grey” petroleum tone of the Alcantara in the interior, providing a subtle contrast with the glass-blasted anodized grey surfaces of the metal parts. Its distinctive “Divo Racing Blue” is also used as an Alcantara leather tone in the interior, where it plays a special role by providing an optical split in the interior surfaces. This colour is used almost throughout the driver’s section while it only provides selected accents in the darker passenger’s section. Another stylistic link between interior and exterior is created by the door trims and seat areas, which feature an embroidered three-dimensional rhomboid structure with an algorithmic configuration, reinterpreting the structure of the grille and rear lights. Technical innovations in the interior include the seats, which not only feature a new design but offer greater lateral support. The steering wheel is partly covered with Alcantara and has larger paddles fitted firmly on both sides of the wheel. Thanks to larger armrests and calf supports, the central console ensures greater comfort.

This latest in the Bugatti line is named after French racing driver and two-times Targa Florio winner Albert Divo Albert Divo was born in Paris on 24 January 1895 under the name of Albert Eugène Diwo (he called himself Divo later). After service as a fighter pilot in the First World War, he worked as a mechanic. His career as a racing driver started with Sunbeam and Talbot-Darracq in 1919. He enjoyed rapid success and won the 1923 Spanish Grand Prix in Sitges In 1924, he moved to Delage and entered a number of sprint races in France. In 1926 and 1927, he again raced for Talbot, where he was less successful as a result of problems with an insufficiently mature design. He then returned to Delage but was not entered for any races. When Talbot and Delage retired from racing, Divo joined Bugatti’s works team in 1928. The same year, he won the Targa Florio in Sicily driving a Type 35 B. He repeated this success the following year. He took third place at Spa in 1930. Up to 1933 he entered further races for Bugatti with the Types 51, 53 and 54, as well as hillclimbs with the Types 45 and 47. From 1936, he raced for Delahaye and Talbot. He retired from racing in 1939. Following the Second World War, Albert Divo worked as racing manager for Castrol. In 1962, he was a founder member of the Club International des Anciens Pilotes de Grand Prix F1 in Villars-sur-Ollon (Switzerland). Divo received the Legion of Honour. He then led a withdrawn life and died in Morsang-sur-Orge to the south of Paris on 19 November 1966. Divo definitely celebrated his greatest success with Bugatti, whose dominance of the Targa Florio started in 1925. The legendary Targa Florio, held on a mountain circuit in Sicily each year until 1977, was certainly one of the most arduous of all the endurance

races of its time. Bugatti won the race five times in succession with the Type 35. Bugatti coach building: factory coachwork made in Molsheim With the Divo, Bugatti is reviving its coach building tradition. While Ettore Bugatti’s vehicles of the 1920s represented lightweight design and technical innovation, it was his son Jean who made the Bugatti bodies of the 1930s into style icons of their time. To this day, Jean’s creations embody the golden era of French coach building. In their own way, father and son both contributed to the very special myth of the Bugatti marque. In the mid-1920s, Ettore Bugatti involved his son more and more in the business of the company and it was Jean who developed concepts for Bugatti bodywork, first for the Type 41 Royale and, from 1926, also for the Type 40. Up to that point, two-seater and four-seater sports convertibles and coupés had been made by coachbuilders such as Gangloff or Lavocat & Marsaud. In order to realize his ideas, Jean engaged the services of talented body designer Joseph Walter. It was Walter who put Jean’s ideas into practice and developed the classical Bugatti coach building tradition with the Grand Sport bodies for Types 40 and 43 through to the Type 57 bodies of the 1930s. For the Type 57, various bodies such as Stelvio, Aravis, Galibier, Ventoux or Atalante could be ordered as factory options. The bestknown coachbuilt creations from Bugatti were definitely the streamlined Type 50, the Type 55 roadster and the Type 57SC Atlantic. This amazing marvel comes at a price of 5 Million dollars. But the sad part is that you cannot buy it since all the models are already sold.

Horses and horsepower flexed their muscle September 5-9 in Saratoga Springs, New York, during the 18th annual Saratoga Wine & Food Festival, which included an ultra-rare showing of the only two surviving 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantics (valued at $40+ million apiece) and a VIP Breakfast tour of Sugar Plum Farm, the boutique Thoroughbred breeding farm and home of America’s Most Eligible Stud, War Dancer, millionaire son of one of the world’s top stallions, War Front. As part of the redesigned Saratoga Wine and Food Festival, the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantics were brought together for the first time in over 15 years at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga State Park.

Bugatti became synonymous with high society through its limited roadster series (each ride had a ‘Type’) and built its legacy on the international racing circuits of the late 1920s and ‘30s, including twice (1937, 1939) winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1998, Volkswagen AG acquired the Bugatti marque and now custom manufactures a select supply of ‘super cars,’ including the 1,479 bhp, 261 mph Chiron driven by Chris Harris on the TV series, Top Gear. “Having these two Bugatti Atlantics together for the first time in 15 years is truly an incredible opportunity not just for Saratoga Springs, but for all of New York State,” said Carly Connors, Saratoga Automobile Museum executive director.

The blue Bugatti, on display at the museum for the event’s opening press conference, belongs to the Peter Mullin Automotive Museum of Oxford, California; the sleek black edition that joined in leading the ‘Bugatti Ballet’ parade, is owned by fashion mogul, Ralph Lauren. The two vehicles had not been seen together since the 2003 Pebble Beach (CA) Concours d’Elegance. Their appearance was made possible through a partnered effort of the American Bugatti Club, and Saratoga Automobile Museum board member, Alan Rosenblum. Coined the ‘Mona Lisa of automobiles,’ the Type 57SC Atlantic is considered among the finest auto designs of pre-war Europe. Jean Bugatti, son of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti, is credited with the Aérolithe concept, which made its Paris debut in 1935. Composed of a light, but flammable magnesium alloy called ‘Elektron’ it contributed to body panels being riveted externally; beneath its body was a new chassis (T57) and double overhead-cam engine. After the Paris Aérolithe show, Bugatti only produced four Atlantic coupes, using aluminum instead of magnesium, while keeping the rivets. Powered by robust 3,257 cc inline-8 engines, the 170+ horse46

power vehicles could attain speeds of more than 120 mph. The two on display in Saratoga are the sole survivors of that epoch. In addition to the historic pairing, the Festival included the first Bugatti Tour road rally in the Empire State, that took drivers and collectors through scenic Adirondack Park and concluded at the Lake George Club; a celebrity grill competition hosted by former Boston Red Sox hitter and first baseman David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz; appearances by such celebrity chefs as Emmy-nominated TV star Todd English and James Beard Award-winning Top Chef, David Burke; and oncein-a-lifetime display of the finest luxury vehicles of their kind during a ‘Bugatti Ballet’ parade on Saturday afternoon. Saratoga Automobile Museum and Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) partnered with the city, fabled for its ‘Horses, Health and History,’ to host and organize the parade, led by the 57SC Atlantics, and featuring 80 elite vehicles epitomizing nearly a century’s worth of Bugatti craft and workmanship. The exclusive International Bugatti Tour only comes to the United States once a decade and was the rally’s first-ever stop in New York State.

The Saratoga Wine and Food Festival is a major annual fundraiser for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s (SPAC) educational programs. “The Bugatti family were more than designers, they were artists. Each of these cars is an individual work of art,” said Elizabeth Sobol, who is in her second season as president and CEO of SPAC. In addition to the Bugatti Atlantics there were newer models, including the Chiron and Veyron, which have been driven by celebrities such as Tom Cruise in ‘Mission Impossible 3,’ Jay-Z and Jay Leno. “This was an event of historic horsepower,’ said former New York State Senator Kathy Marchionne, daughter of Automotive Museum Hall of Famer Sergio Marchionne, the industry trailblazer who orchestrated the merger of Chrysler Fiat in the wake of the 2008 US financial crisis.

48

October 2018

“This proves Saratoga is not over when the track ends,” she said. “It’s just the beginning.” For over 150 years, Saratoga’s JulyAugust Thoroughbred racing season has been seen as one of the oldest and longest-operating sporting venues in the country. The connection between horses and horsepower is as old as the horseshoe-shaped grill still iconic to the Bugatti design, and was underscored during the VIP Breakfast at Sugar Plum Farm, hosted by Robin and Tony Malatino, that included an introduction to their prized stallion, War Dancer, and some of his 2018 foal crop of future Derby hopefuls. “The name ‘Bugatti,’ is available for a racehorse,” Robin concluded with a wink (pending approval by The Jockey Club). Judging by the warm reception from aficionados of horsepower, we bet that naming opportunity won’t be around for much longer.

This model of the Porsche 911 Turbo, also known as the 930 because of it's 3.3 liter engine, was never distributed widely in the U.S. from 1981 to 1985 because of import bans relating to its inability to pass federal emissions tests. Instead, Porsche lovers who wanted this car during that period were forced to buy them from individual owners in Europe, thus bypassing regulations that authorized Porsche dealerships had to follow. Thus, many Americans never got the chance to purchase this rare beauty, which featured an updated brake system from Porsche's 917 LeMans race car as well as other new technologies. The brake system, which hid between 16" forged wheels, featured cross-drilled brake disks, now common on not only race cars but a lot of street-legal ones too, four piston calipers made from aluminum, and a twin tailpipe exhaust. The rear spoiler included two intake vents, one each for the engine and air conditioning condenser. Models were limited to four-speed synchromesh manual transmissions only, and the engine itself was a air-cooled flat six which included a chain-driven single overhead cam on

each bank with rocker arms and inclined valves. Horsepower on CIS-injected U.S. models built before the "gray market" years was 234, with European versions getting slightly less. Because of a two millimeter bore increase, to 97 mm, and a stroke increase of four millimeters to 74.4, which was instituted in 1979, the 930 Turbo acquired the largest and most powerful production Porsche engine to date. Horsepower production was upped to 300 at 5500 RPM, with torque rising to 303 lb. feet at 4000 RPM. Perfomance was sensational with a test by Motor Magazine showing the 930 reaching 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, 0-100 in 12.3 and 0-120 in 19.1 seconds, a phenomenal accomplishment in those days. Partly because of the new braking system, stop tests were also good, with the 930 stopping in 174 feet from 70 mph and showing no evident brake fade through 20 successive stops from 100 mph! In 1978, the engine was mounted further towards the rear of the car in order to accommodate a new clutch disc hub, and Porsche engineers recommended an increase in tire pressure of nine inches to offset a handling difference which was found under racetrack conditions. Too bad this car can never have a warranty because of the EPA problems from back in the 1980's.

By Sameer Shah Staff Writer Welcoming a new era in its history, TVR has unveiled its all new sports car, the TVR Griffith, at the 2017 Goodwood Revival. Revealed to media and visitors, the Griffith is the first new TVR to be launched since the company was resurrected in British hands. The new Griffith stays true to the brand’s rich heritage, while employing cutting-edge engineering. The exterior has been designed to be as striking as it is aerodynamically efficient. The timeless sports car silhouette is accented with deep air intakes, generating high levels of downforce and cooling. Embodying TVR’s long-standing ethos of the Sprit of Driving - the principle of delivering an involving driving interface where the driver will always be fully in control - the new Griffith uses intelligent engineering over electronic driver aids. Only the second front-engined production car to feature a flat floor, the new TVR Griffith boasts a full ground-effect aerodynamic package to ensure that the car remains stable at high speeds and delivers exceptional handling abilities. Employing Gordon Murray Design’s innovative iStream architecture with carbon composite structure and body panels, the new TVR Griffith weighs just 1250kg, offers exceptional torsional rigidity and a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Powering the new TVR Griffith is a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Cosworth-enhanced V8, which enables 400bhp/tonne and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The new TVR Griffith achieves a top speed of more than 200mph, and accelerates from 0-60mph in less than four seconds. The new TVR Griffith unveiled to the public was presented in Launch Edition specification, which includes a full leather interior and custom alloy wheels, as well as Launch Edition paint options and a bespoke infotainment system. Starting from £90,000, production of the new TVR Griffith Launch Edition will begin in late 2018. TVR is also previewing the new Griffith in a striking pace car livery, signalling the brand’s intention to return to the racetracks of the world in the very near future.

October 2018

DESIGN Boasting timeless sports car proportions and radical styling, the new Griffith is unmistakably a TVR, while its LED headlamps and full ground effect aerodynamics truly bring the brand into the present day. Designed to be as striking as it is aerodynamically efficient, the new TVR Griffith’s front end is dominated by a large, angular front grille set just centimetres above the car’s front splitter. Deep air intakes integrated into front valance not only provide optimum brake cooling, but generate additional downforce for front end stability. Meanwhile, the front light clusters are reminiscent of previous TVR Griffiths. Front wings that are sculpted to match the contours of the front wheel lead the eye down the svelte waistline of the car, accented by a geometric air vent and double side exit exhausts. The low, swooping roofline contributes to aerodynamic efficiency and channels air towards the car’s sculpted rear, which is finished with a concave LED light assembly and integrated rear diffuser. SPIRIT OF DRIVING The new TVR Griffith employs a full ground effect aerodynamics package to deliver outstanding stability and handling capabilities, and is only the second front-engined production car to feature an entirely flat floor. Ground effect is the aerodynamic principle of using airflow along the underside of the vehicle to pull it closer to the ground, by creating downforce. In employing ground effect in the new sports car’s design, TVR has ensured the car remains stable at high speed, while also contributing to delivering exceptional handling and cornering capabilities. Reversing the trend towards increasing vehicle dimensions, the new TVR Griffith is the most compact car in its class, measuring just 4314mm long, 1850mm wide and 1239mm tall. Similarly, due to its advanced lightweight construction and carbon composite body panels, the TVR Griffith weighs under 1250kg. CHASSIS The new TVR Griffith is the first production vehicle to employ Gordon Murray Design’s revolutionary iStream® architecture. The

Exotic Cars Magazine

innovative manufacturing process not only ensures the Griffith remains lightweight, it also delivers exceptional torsional rigidity. iStream® combines lightweight Formula 1 technology with outstanding safety standards. Unnecessary weight is stripped out, not only improving performance and dynamics, but also improving component durability. The iStream® structure of the new TVR Griffith is constructed using carbon composite bonded to steel and aluminium, clad in carbon composite bodywork. In the event of an impact, force is directed through front and rear crash structures, ensuring the chassis remains intact and minimising damage to the bodywork. PERFECT BALANCE Griffith’s chassis is lightweight, exceptionally torsionally rigid, and perfectly balanced. With a weight of less than 1250kg, and the engine mounted well behind the front axle line, a precise 50:50 weight distribution has been achieved. The car boasts a double wishbone suspension set-up with adjustable coil-over dampers and concentric springs at both the front and back axles. It has electric power assisted steering, which has been specifically developed for the new TVR Griffith, ensuring easy maneuverability at low speeds, without compromising feel or stability. Braking power is provided by six-piston aluminum calipers and two-piece 370mm ventilated floating discs at the front, with four-piston aluminum calipers and two-piece 350mm ventilated discs at the rear. To further improve traction while preserving excellent steering feel and feedback, the new TVR Griffith has larger, wider wheels and tyres at the rear (20 inch wheels with 275/30 tires) than at the front (19 inch wheels with 235/35 tires). Complying with European Type Approval standards, the new car is fitted with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a configurable traction control system.

POWERTRAIN The joy of driving a TVR has always centred around a deep connection between man and machine. The new TVR Griffith continues this tradition, and the power-train set-up is a vital part of this. In the development of the new car, it was crucial that the vehicle’s power unit stay true to the brand’s rich heritage, while being utterly reliable and dependable, with sensible servicing intervals and adhering to today’s strict emissions control standards. The Griffith is equipped with a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth-enhanced V8, to further increase performance, without compromising the base engine’s renowned reliability. Most notably, the V8 unit’s engine control unit has been substantially enhanced. This not only increases power, but delivers a broader range of torque and power. A bespoke lighter flywheel and clutch, together with a dry sump system, mean that the engine can be mounted lower and further back in the chassis, reducing the car’s centre of gravity and helping to achieve the perfect 50:50 fore/aft weight distribution. With the Cosworth enhancements, the engine enables the TVR Griffith to achieve a power-to-weight ratio of 400bhp/ton. It is mated to a six-speed manual Tremec gearbox. The Magnum XL gearbox is capable of 700lb-ft torque and up to 7500 rpm. TVR GRIFFITH LAUNCH EDITION TVR will produce 500 Griffith Launch Edition models, with production starting in late 2018. The TVR Griffith Launch Edition will be offered in a broad choice of colours, including specific Launch Edition colours, as well as custom paint options. It will be fitted with bespoke Launch Edition wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front and 20 inches at the rear. All Launch Edition models will have a full leather interior offered in a number of bespoke colours. The TVR Griffith Launch Edition will start from £90,000, with a small number of allocations still available.

Paris Motor Show

2018 Paris Motor Show

Stepping into the future Pascal Biarrotte Oct 07, 2018 The 2018 Paris Show opened its 120th year celebration with a mixed feeling of hate and love for the secular traditional cranking automobile in favor of fast emerging cleaner technologies and new softer driving habits. Times are changing fast with oil supply shrinkage and global warming looming. Several manufacturers have already dropped their diesel offers. We are now standing at the crossroads of a major change in motoring and everyone is not ready for it. With now extended range, fast charging solutions and reliability, this really is year one for electric cars. Less exciting, artificial intelligence is next. A new era is on the way. No wonder so many major manufacturers decided to skip the glamorous City of Lights as some large metropolis over Europe, with Paris as a leader; are doing their best to fight air pollution by trying to chase automobiles out of the city. With closed streets or highways now dedicated to pedestrians emphasizing congestion plus the lack of parking space, your driving there becomes so miserable you get reluctant to reenact the experience. As a fact, a new generation of city birds and commuters don’t buy cars anymore rather favoring public transportation and chauffeur service or hourly renting when they need one. No more of the dancers and actors or the musical rumble we used to see around cars on show, no more bikinis and sexy models on hood display. Instead you will meet with fine young saleswomen with engineering background wearing trousers or knee high uniform 76

dresses, talking mileage or horsepower and financing offers without even a smile. It seems the Weinstein scandal has left deep scars in corporate world and entertainment has suddenly be written off politically correct. This show is indeed beautiful with plenty of exciting and promising new generations of cars, but a little of that festive spirit is just missing and it is becoming so dead serious. Where has all the fun gone ? Spotlights this year are more than ever on plug in electric offers and autonomous project cars. Local manufacturer Peugeot is leading the pack proudly exhibiting e-Legnd a very realistic and running interpretation of a close future average four seater coupe. Despite a dull exterior design reminiscent of the seventies and only appealing to the French, it is a jewel in terms of high tech development. Among other advanced features, steering wheel is fully retractable at will into the dashboard offering you choice at any time to take control, or be chauffeured by the computer. Renault, famous here for its competitive and reliable ZE line of full electric cars (with best seller Zoe) celebrates also it’s 120th birthday bringing to the show no less than four autonomous concept dream-cars and dream-vans of science fiction design and noticeable size. Don’t look for driver seats, you won’t find any. EZ-Go is obviously intended for taxi or shuttle service with step-in front entrance and lateral bench seats, Two others are for cargo and delivery when the best of the best goes to ZE-Ultimo, a sleek 30 feet long Limo. Interior is a roomy luxurious lounge for 3 fitted with wooden floor, leather sofa seats facing each other and even a coffee machine. Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow is a huge and stunning streamlined concept mixing mid 30s speed record breaking flavor with new age design and technology. A new Class B and the EQC electric SUV are also on display.

Porsche celebrates its 50 th year by displaying a line up of historical cars from their museum among they updated line of cars staring a red 911 Speedster version they finally decided to put into production. Jaguar takes new directions with a station wagon and a large display of electric compact SUVs when Range Rover sharing the same booth seems to prefer developing plug-in hybrids. BMW I8 is now available as a convertible and 2019 other models show slight lifting. The new 3 Series and return of Z4 convertible are definitely crowd magnets. More elitist beautiful new 8 series coupe is also visible. Tesla is for now presenting its new $ 35.000 compact sedan. No information is available about their expected future speedster. To be noticed is the rebirth of legendary Alpine brand sponsored by Renault. Surfing on the memories of a glorious racing past and cherished by all rallye aficionados it is a real exotic and as iconic here as an AC Cobra or a DeLorean are in USA. Now mid engined, this long waited and quite attractive all new A110 berlinetta is back to production line and marketed as a direct challenger to the Lotus Elise and Porsche Cayman. Supercars, as usual bring their share of dreams and innovation. Aspark is a Japanese newcomer to the Hypercar scene. Their very exclusive and promising Owl is an all electric road legal racer

of 430 HP designed for fast acceleration. Claiming less than two seconds from 0 to 60mph, overall performances and top speed seem to be very comparable to Bugatti Chiron despite a limited range of less than 100 miles on battery charge, A limited production of 50 cars is expected. Based on Ferrari 812, limited production Monza SP1 and SP 2 prototypes draw a lot of attention and comments. Four Lotus of well known current production are on the show. We will have to wait until the end of next year to see significant changes in styling and range with electric engines and potential venue of a new SUV. Legendary Aston Martin unveils 735 Hp v12 DBS Superleggera. Vantage and two DB11s are also presented. All eyes are on Lamborghini Urus which is now available for sale. Bugatti Chiron and Divo are on show. Lego also displays further down the same hall a full scale Chiron reproduction made of their bricks that can be equally driven, and this is a performance, up to … 15 mph Bentley and Rolls Royce are among the remarked missing exhibitors and a lot of visitors I talked to felt somehow disappointed they missed an opportunity to see live a Bentayga and the new Cullinan SUV.
