PWC’S SHIRLEY MACHABA – ACCOUNTING LEADER AND SA PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR Academically, Machaba holds a degree in accounting as well as a post graduate diploma in auditing and accounting from the University of South Africa. Her academic qualifications extend to two post-graduate programs, including a diploma in integrated reporting from the University of Pretoria and one in corporate governance from Duke University.

Shirley Machaba, CEO of PwC in Southern Africa, has been crowned both the Accounting Industry Leader of the Year and the Overall Professional of the Year for the 2019/2020 period. The accolades were granted by the SA Professional Services Awards sponsored by Sanlam and W. Consulting. Professionals from various organisations were set to gather at a gala dinner in Montecasino Ball Room on the evening of 19 March 2020 to honour the best amongst them. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the SAPSA Awards event was cancelled and the winners announced. Janette Minnaar, the chair of the adjudication panel explained how the individual winners were determined.

“Individuals were judged based on a host of attributes including demonstration of leadership skills, changing of paradigms and innovation within the bounds of available resources. We also conferred a number of Lifetime Achievement Awards to deserving recipients who had served their professions faithfully for many years,” said Minnaar. Machaba’s professional background lies in the public sector. She began her career at the office of the Auditor General of South Africa, where she spent nearly a decade and held a variety of roles. She then worked at the Department of Justice in South Africa prior to joining PwC in 2005. She was appointed CEO of PwC Southern Africa in May 2019 becoming the first black woman to occupy the position.

“Ever since her appointment, there have been positive remarks from outside and within the profession,” the judges remarked. “Her humility is not counting herself as an exception is endearing. She recognises that her appointment has the potential impact of inspiring women and the black child to imagine the impossible. Shirley has the admirable vision of building the undisputed number one professional services firm in the country in terms of quality clients and quality people. Her approach of sleeping on a problem will undoubtedly result in success.” Receiving her Awards at her Pretoria residence, Machaba expressed sincere gratitude. “I would like to thank the judges for the Awards. I also would like to thank PwC for allowing me to reimagine the possible and do what I can do best. I would like to also thank my colleagues and family for their unconditional support. These Awards shape me to be an inspiring and courageous leader and they are a product of teamwork so I thank all those who supported me to along the way.”

Multinational professional services company Turner & Townsend, has been recognised as the best professional services firm in the country for the 2019/2020 season. The accolade was granted by the SA Professional Services Awards sponsored by Sanlam and W. Consulting. The company also won the Construction Sector Firm of the Year Award and had half a dozen professionals recognised as finalists at the Awards. Michelle Jackson, one of the company directors, received special commendation from the judges in the Construction Sector Professional of the Year category. Janette Minnaar, the chair of the adjudication panel explained how the winners were determined. “The firm awards were based on the following criteria – business growth,

customer service, technical excellence, contribution to the community, contribution to the profession, transformation record and commitment to ethics and professionalism. The criteria were not equally weighted, a strong showing in one category was sufficient to put the firm above the rest,” said Minnaar. It was a solid year for Turner & Townsend Africa business with revenue up ten percent, despite some economic and political uncertainty. This was underpinned by strong performances, in particular in the natural resources sector, in South Africa and in the real estate sector in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda, where they enjoyed successes with clients including Nissan. Turner & Townsend has a superb range of initiatives (15 to be exact) that provide opportunities for the construction profession and for the communities in

which they operate. “Most impressive is that the company offers an ISO certification programme that passes on the ability to compete in a highly complex, technical and progressively international market place and ensures the sustainable development of Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSEs) and Exempt Micro Enterprises (EMEs),” Minnaar added. “We awarded Michelle Jackson special commendation in the Construction due to her versatility,” Minnaar continued. “Since joining Turner and Townsend, she has gained experience in construction project management of major projects in diverse fields. She has assisted with managing the contract administration team and managed energy projects in South Africa and far afield in Nigeria”

TREND GROUP SPECIALISES IN UNIQUE DESIGN-AND-BUILD APPROACH Trend Group has carved out a unique niche for itself as an oﬃce interior design and refurbishment specialist, featuring both design-and-build and project management capabilities, covering all aspects of the ﬁt-out process.

Established over a decade ago, and with offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, Trend Group started out by focusing on project implementation from a development and management perspective, Business Development Director Gavin Dickinson explains. “We ultimately undertake the full refurbishment of commercial, industrial, and retail schemes, overseeing the entire process from start to finish.” A property developer by trade, Dickinson founded the company in conjunction with Meyer Erlank, the current Project Director. Clients vary from those with a vacant office that needs to designed, built, and fitted-out, to clients with an existing design that simply needs to be built, to international clients with their own in-house design teams that require roll-out assistance. “We fulfil a hybrid role straddling both the design and build ends of the project spectrum,” Dickinson stresses. Trend Group has worked across multiple industries, and undertaken projects for the likes of Google, Citibank, Facebook, Booking.com, Bloomberg, Uber, Red Bull, Unilever, Porsche, Prudential, King Price, Pinsent Masons, Coca-Cola and BBC, among others.

Nathalie is a registered quantity surveyor with the SA Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession and a member of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors. She joined MMQSMace in 2006 working on projects approximating R7 million and quickly progressed to managing projects in the region of half a billion rand. Her role at the company has included working on the Royal Bafokeng Palace project, managing the Barclays and Transnet accounts and lately overseeing operational and strategic tasks at the firm including the recruitment of staff.

“Thank you very much. It is really an honour to receive this honour during this difficult time when we are experiencing the Covid-19 pandemic,” Katumba said. “I would like to dedicate this Award to my director Mandla Mlangeni for all the mentorship he has given to me throughout the years. PARAGON’S CLAIRE D’ADORANTE – ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR Design Centre. Her first job was at TPC Architects (now LYT) for two years in its Interiors division. “I guess that is where I developed the interest in creating interior architectural spaces more than how to play with colours and cushions in the space – it is an important part of the work we do,” D’Adorante recalled. “I also did residential, developmental and more bespoke housing for various architecture firms before spending six-and-a-half years in Australia working for a large national architectural practice with multi-disciplinary expertise. I then joined Paragon at the end of 2012.” 18

She has been instrumental in developing the interiors business of the group from 12 to 22 employees. Aaron Mthimunye, Managing Director of the Assurance Division of SNG Grant Thornton, has been crowned the Accounting Professional of the Year for the 2019/2020 period. Mthimunye grew up in the 1980’s in a semi-rural area in KwaMhlanga - KwaNdebele, in the Mpumalanga Province. He wanted to be either a Doctor or Engineer. However in Grade 11, Physical Science was discontinued as they did not have a qualified teacher and as a result he was introduced to Accounting. He later enrolled at Wits University for a B. Com Degree and completed the Certificate in the Theory of Accountancy through the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. His articles were served through Deloitte after which he joined the Corporate Finance division of African Merchant Bank.

“Having received a special commendation from SAPSA in 2019, the judges were of the view that Aaron should be considered once more for a win in this category,” Minnaar said. “Aaron is undoubtedly a great contributor to both the company he works for and the profession to which he belongs. PKF’S CHARLES MAZHINDU RECEIVES SAPSA JUDGES COMMENDATION Charles Mazhindu, Partner at Accounting and Audit firm PKF Octagon, has received special commendation in the category of Accounting Professional of the Year for the 2019/2020 period. The accolade was granted by the SA Professional Services Awards sponsored by Sanlam and W. Consulting. Mazhindu joined the EY Durban office as a trainee accountant in 1994. He left EY in 1998 and joined Argil Pty Ltd as a Manager (an advisory business 40% owned by EY and 60% by African Investments Limited (now known as Phembani). He later joined the South African Breweries as a Commodity Manager doing procurement and subsequently ran his own practice before rejoining EY as a partner in 2012. He joined PKF Octagon in June 2019.

“Charles comes across as strong in mentorship through providing this informally to junior colleagues both in and out of the workplace,” the SAPSA judges said. “His view is that if he can help others avoid the mistakes he made along the way, he would have made a significant contribution to their lives. Further, Charles has taken a bold step of leaving the comfort of a Big 4 entity to assuming a ‘sole partnership’ role within PKF Octagon where he is already contributing to the transformation and business growth of the firm.”

BDO’S VIANCA PRETORIUS RECOGNISED AT SAPSA AWARDS 2020 the partnership. The firm has consistently delivered over 10,000 hours in pro bono time and in November 2019 won the Pro Bono Award in the Large Law Firm category at the annual ProBono.Org awards. the management and co-ordination of the firm’s pro bono programme in accordance with the firm policy. Her long career dates back to working for the Legal Resources Centre in 1987 and prior to joining Bowmans she worked at the Department of Justice, Alexandra Legal Aid Centre and the Legal Aid Board.

“I think this Award is an important award for the nature of the work that we do,” Fatima said. “There are many of our lawyers who give of their time to assist with pro bono work and to assist in seeking justice for the poor. The way our firm operates is that every lawyer is expected to do pro bono work alongside their billable work across all of our offices in Africa. Sandra Crous, the CEO of payroll solutions provider Payspace, has been granted a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Digital Industry. The accolade was granted by the SA Professional Services Awards sponsored by Sanlam and W. Consulting. Sandra Crous started her career at SA Permanent Building Society at the enquiries desk. Frustrated about the work she was doing, she requested a transfer to the human resources division where she attended to the salaries function. She started doing salaries and wages and implemented a few computerised payroll systems at different business when in 1989; she saw an advert for a support role to implement payroll systems. She joined a start-up company of seven employees. In the first month of getting leads, she sold four payroll systems a week and that was a massive learning journey. She later had a 27-year run at VIP Payroll and eventually Sage Africa. She fulfilled diverse roles including Sales Director, later taking up the helm as Vice-President for Midmarket Africa

She has held positions in the education sector most recently as CEO of both Damelin Online and the London College of International Business Studies.
