Colour Trends and Style Tips Wendy Greenhalf, Colour Expert & Designer at Colour, Style, Design, says we cannot underestimate the influence colour has over people’s mood, emotions and behaviour. “When styling for a showroom, display, digital shoot, magazine or for clients, there are some simple ‘rules’ I follow. In saying that, I am a believer in breaking the rules especially with colour designs!”. She continues, “So these ‘rules’ are more my top tips I use across multiple platforms – no matter what size, budget or client needs.” Bundling
Creating successful interiors or styling with colour is all about ‘bundling’. You add and pull different elements together to build upon layers. Step one: select the right type of colour by bundling hues together with or without an accent until you’re happy with the key base colour. You should also bundle similarly-shaped objects together. Size it up
Keep it simple
Sometimes ‘less’ really is ‘more’, as you don’t want to overwhelm the viewer’s senses. Cramming strong colours or patterns all together in one space reduces the impact, so consider using these elements sparingly. Blooms, greening and natural objects
Flowers, plants and natural objects such as shells or driftwood always lift a room and are one of the most cost effective ways to accessorise any room. Texture and pattern
Texture and pattern is everywhere, from our timbers through to pebbles found in a riverbed. The simplest way to work with a pattern is to bundle many colours in just one or two different patterns – from cushions to other accessories. Or try switching it and bundle one or two colours with a number of different patterns. Play with the layering adding or removing different accessories.
If you want to make a statement, especially when it comes to artwork, a large oversized picture, positioned above your piece of furniture, will set the stage. Wendy Greenhalf Colour Expert and Designer presents floor talks at FURNITEX connect. colourstyledesign.com.au Page 10
Consumer-led trends leave no doubt The latest round of home decoration and improvement television programs has invigorated Australian’s love for their homes. There is a vibrant desire for quality products and consumers are open to what is available. More than ever, Australians are aware of what furniture to buy, where to buy it and what they want. As a result, several trends have arisen. There is a need for education across the furniture industry and around the quality and sustainability of imported furniture products. Consumers would prefer to buy Australian, though budgetary constraints often come into play when choosing furniture. Assurances over the health and safety of products will override these constraints particularly when the consumer’s health, and that of their families, is at risk. The Australian Furniture Association has been very concerned about the lack of quality checks on imported furniture. Only last year the AFA called upon the ACCC to investigate the use of AZO in imported sofas, lounge suites, ottomans, day beds and blankets. AZO is a cancer linked chemical found in textiles and imported furniture.
sustainable and natural. While some consumers shopping for furniture want ‘new’ not ‘second hand’, words such as ‘made from sustainable forest timbers’, ‘naturally dyed fabrics’ all influence the purchasing decision through the process of emotional judgement. There is also a growing appreciation for ‘handmade’ or ‘hand crafted’ pieces. ‘Bespoke’ furniture pieces command the consumers’ attention. The secret is to choose the best ‘maker’ and ensure the brief meets with the clients’ expectations. Whilst price is often a consideration, the real secret is to work with a professional who understands the business transaction, together with the process of design and manufacturing. Various television shows have highlighted the need for quality Australian products, and bespoke makers can source product locally, so its quality is guaranteed. The Australian Furniture Association is proud to present quality Australian Furniture at FURNITEX connect, which in turn supports the Australian furniture and manufacturing industries’ future.
There is a growing emphasis placed on environmentally friendly products. The magic words to attract consumer attention are recycled, recyclable, FURNITEX connect
