CLASSES BEGINNING THURSDAY APRIL 11, 2019 ONE-DAY CLASSES ROCK THE BLOCK: ALBUM STYLE Tutor: Joe Cunningham • Skill level: All • Materials fee: Nil How can a quilt that looks so complex be so simple? Joe's simple process rocks the block and leads the quilter to unavoidable originality. You can’t help it! Fun, easy, deeply satisfying and eye-opening, this class will have you inventing your own ways to make block quilts all your own. Using Joe’s process, you will make approximately 24, 6½ inch blocks and develop alternative ways of setting and bordering them. The process can be used to make as many blocks as you wish. You rock it!

Bring a coat or jacket that you have been dying to embellish and tell your own story in thread! We will take the garment a step further from plain to priceless by embellishing gorgeous details in fabric, decorative stitches and layers. Birds, swirls, angels, hearts, symbols, fruit, vines and flower motifs work well, but bring any motif that is personal to you that you would like to add. Designs can include buttons, beads, crystal, sequins, lace, or trim. Anything we can layer, we will. You will need a wool, cotton, or denim coat or jacket with detached or no lining. No polyester. Motif patterns provided.
This delightful project uses Rachael’s new Sliced Octagon block design and features a scrappy English paper pieced front cover with a little fussy cutting. The inside has a place for your needles, scissors and other sewing bits and pieces. This is a hand sewing class where you will learn English paper piecing, Rachael’s tips and tricks for accurate fussy cutting, and hand appliqué, then leave with knowledge to complete this project at home and apply what you learn to other projects.
INTERLACED PATCHWORK Tutor: Gillian Travis • Skill level: All • Materials fee: $1 for each pattern page Learn an innovative method of weaving or interlacing. Inspired by Scandinavian woven Christmas decorations. Gillian has developed the patterns and designs to make fabric blocks that can be joined to make a striking wall hanging, cushion, table runner or bag. Finished blocks are 4” square but they could be slightly bigger or smaller. It’s clever, it’s addictive and it’s fun to do! April 11 – 14, 2019

PRINTING MODERN FABRICS Tutor: Julie Haddrick • Skill level: All • Materials fee: $58 Learn to print fabric to make your own bespoke creations. Think modern, organic shapes, large texture prints, funky baby animals or bold, large motifs like Marimekko style on linen, canvas, cotton. In this easy, informative and creative class Julie will share many different printing techniques she uses in her own art, quilt making and home decoration. You will make print blocks, use various stencil-making materials, try silk screen printing and do template-free colour printing. Begin with quick stencil techniques, then develop a simple print motif, or simply use some of Julie’s stencil and woodblock collection. The idea is to try all the techniques. (Students may bring their own too.) Design also for a scan and cut stencil based on personal ideas and learn colour mixing with ink and fabric paints, create mood design boards and colour swatch palettes. Modern printing uses rudimentary equipment, so the workshop is designed to be easily continued at home using simple tools.

Make a stunning modern wholecloth quilt with expert guidance in this fun and relaxed lesson. The Hexi Wholecloth quilt is designed by dividing the background into hexagon shapes then building on this structure using quilting rulers to flow design through the blocks, creating single motifs that pop. To complete the piece, you will enhance with fillers to add more texture, depth and beauty to your quilted creation. This project is filled with various helpful techniques and learning these tips will strengthen your skills and broaden your ability to finish your quilts. Approx. finished size of quilt 42” x 52”.
REVERSIBLE LOG CABIN Tutor: Emiko Toda Loeb • Skill level: All • Materials fee: Nil The class is both project and technique. You will learn the techniques of designing and creating a reversible Log Cabin quilt block by making both sides simultaneously, first with the same designs – but different colours – on the two sides. Then you will make blocks with different designs on both sides. After making four such blocks you will learn how to assemble them. By the end of the second day you will hopefully have completed a four-block small reversible quilt. If not quite finished, you will have learned the necessary skills to finish it at home.
Make a beautiful 20 inch square mini balloon quilt using fabrics of your choice. This project is based on Kat’s own award-winning Moda Bella Challenge quilt from 2017 using her innovative technical skills and tips. Sewing methods include improv piecing with variable width bias appliqué, machine appliqué with freezer paper, trapunto, walking foot quilting with Perle cotton and swirling free-motion quilting. If you do not free-motion quilt, you can use a walking foot instead. You will be emailed the templates for the balloons after completing the class, enabling you to use the techniques to complete a larger project (right) using the techniques taught.

You will make a modern, graphic decorative-stitched flower cushion, learn to use heavy textural threads for decorative stitching, trapunto appliqué, sketch appliqué, free-motion stitch quilting and grid pebble quilting. You'll receive a colour booklet with all notes and patterns plus webbing and stabilisers.
Learn tips and techniques for successful improvisational piecing in quiltmaking. Using examples from her own practice, Jess will demonstrate how your improv-pieced blocks can be combined to create new and innovative quilt designs. Learn about the roles of the elements and principles of design in quiltmaking and hone your own intuition in making design decisions about colour, shape, line and pattern.
Create a fabric collage quilt of your favourite animal with Susan’s innovative layering/collage method. Pets, mammals of the world, birds, sea life such as turtles or fish – any animal is game – a fabric collage trophy! The four-day format is ideal for expanding on each student's unique design. Each day, Susan will introduce different aspects of the fabric collage process, using her own stunning quilts as examples. Fabric selection and how it relates to subject matter, construction, backgrounds and borders, quilting, and finishing for display will all be discussed.

Creating these simple, related blocks is easy and you can make them as challenging as you like. While this is primarily a process class, at the end of the day you will have enough blocks for a crib-size quilt. By using these techniques you will then learn how to create your own original processes.

This is a fun small project where you can hand-stitch English paper piecing and play with fussy cutting and create different effects using mirrors. Pick up Rachael’s tips and tricks for accurate fussy cutting and hand appliqué, and leave with knowledge to complete this project at home and apply what you’ve learnt to other projects.
Learn how to make a pattern from a photograph and appliqué the design so that it is exactly the same as the pattern, plus how to add paint to give a 3-dimensional feel. You will also learn how to stitch and bind the piece, although this will need to be done at home. While on holiday in Portugal, Gillian took lots of photos of sardines in the fish market. Back

ONE-DAY CLASSES PINE STAR Tutor: Rachaeldaisy • Skill level: All • Materials fee: Nil You will enchant viewers with the mesmerising patterns and kaleidoscopic effects of these beautiful Pine Star circles. Learn how to make a Pine Star circle in any size that can be used in a project of your choice, whether it be a quilt, wall art, cushion, bag or other wonderful creation. Rachaeldaisy will talk about different ways for folding the points, choosing fabrics, making different variations and suggestions for finishing the block in different ways. This technique is suitable for beginners to learn and a fun new challenge for more experienced sewers who would like to try something different.
Many years ago Gillian won a first prize at the Festival of Quilts in the UK for her large bunch of three dimensional fabric flowers. Flowers can be made from special fabrics, eg children’s clothes or wedding fabrics as a permanent reminder. The flowers are wired giving them a 3D appearance.
SHADOW TRAPUNTO SAMPLER Tutor: Heather Hopkins • Skill level: Suits all, some basic free-motion quilting skills required • Materials fee: $30 This stunning little gem will teach you simple modern trapunto techniques and you will take it to the next level by adding in another element. The shadow fabric is what creates the subtle colour and interest, the tight fills and density of the free motion quilting designs are what give your piece high impact and attraction. HARRIET’S TREASURES Tutor: Rachael Porter • Skill level: Confident beginner to advanced • Materials fee: $75 includes all acrylic templates, papers and precut templates Harriet’s Treasures is a lap quilt made up of nine ‘scrappy’ Lone Star blocks. The star blocks allow you to play with fussy cutting using different fabrics. These blocks are then appliquéd to background squares giving the look of a wholecloth background. Next comes appliquéing the addition of scrappy honeycombs to separate each block. This is a project class and you will also learn techniques, and Rachael’s tips and tricks for English paper piecing, fussy cutting and appliqué. You will leave with enough knowledge to complete the project and apply what you’ve learnt to other projects.
MODERN BIAS APPLIQUÉ TECHNIQUES

This class introduces you to various techniques of working with ½ inch, ¼ inch and variable width bias binding applique in a fun, modern way. In Day 1 you will start three fat quarter sized (perfect cushion) projects to learn each technique or choose to work on an improvisational piece using multiple techniques. On Day 2 you can choose to complete the three small projects started on Day 1 or start a larger project focusing on one of the techniques – a landscape quilt, a flowing curvy quilt or a mandala quilt. Please note the mandala quilt uses ¼ inch bias and this option is recommended for experienced quilters only. Class also includes Kat’s technique for creating applique dots which she uses extensively in bias applique quilts plus discussion of design approaches she uses in creating her mandala quilts.

Learn the skills to create your very own knockout statement piece. This is the time to use those favourite silks and combine your dressmaking and patchworking talents to try something new. Learn how to apply our patchwork knowledge to begin to create a wearable piece. Using foundation piecing, with specific links to the importance of the elements and principles of design in fashion, Jess will share her experience and guide you on the path.

ONE-DAY CLASSES ORGANIC HAND QUILTING Tutor: Rachaeldaisy • Skill level: All • Materials fee: Nil Add extra colour and character to your quilts with Perle 8 organic quilting. Rachaeldaisy will discuss the tools you need and teach you the skills to get you rocking the needle to make beautiful big stitches. You’ll also learn the organic decorative stitches that have featured in her award-winning quilts. Organic quilting is the perfect way to finish your quilts in a way that shows the maker’s hand. You will work on a sampler of stitches that could be finished as a table runner or wall hanging.
Learn how to create mini medallions with rulers on a Sweet Sixteen sit down machine. Heather’s technique uses the quilting rulers as the base core structure, then it’s time to go to town with free motion fill designs and elegant elements to turn simple lines into something amazing. Heather’s experience and expertise will guide you and give you the confidence to beautifully quilt your project. You will be provided with plenty of inspiration and tips on how to take this quilting technique from sampler size to a future modern whole cloth quilt.
Learn how to use a photo to identify colours and match fabrics, make a simple pattern from an image using an ipad or similar, strip-piece, use an innovative method of appliqué, join the blocks by adding sashing using a bias binding maker and bind the wall hanging using a very easy method.

Gillian has made several quilts using this technique. The first one was made up of narrow strips of fabric inspired by the colours and stripes of Polish Folk costume with added guinea fowl images that are so popular in Folk Culture in Warsaw, appliquéd over the top.

The second was inspired by storks seen in similar shops in Krakow. Gillian then made another based on native birds seen in Devon England. There are endless possibilities to make a wall hanging featuring Aussie birds. The blocks are joined using an innovative method with thin sashing.

ABOUT THE TUTORS IN 2019 SUSAN CARLSON, USA Susan Carlson is an internationally known, award-winning quilt artist. She travels around the world teaching her fabric collage technique. She has written two books and has produced an online class called the Susan Carlson Fabric Collage Online Master Class. JOE CUNNINGHAM, USA Joe started quilting in 1979 and has been teaching, writing and talking about quilts ever since. Of his 12 books on the subject his most recent is ‘Men and the Art of Quiltmaking’. Having been immersed in the study of traditional quilts and techniques when he began, his style now is eccentric, unique and personal. JULIE HADDRICK, SA Proud 2018 Rajah Award recipient, Julie Haddrick is an accomplished, prize-winning quilter, artist, teacher and judge. Her quilts traverse contemporary quilt styles, techniques and media, and her formal training; Visual Art; Teaching degree, (drawing, painting, printmaking and design) strengthens her expression and creativity. HEATHER HOPKINS, SA As a first-generation quilter, Heather has developed her own dynamic modern ‘anything goes’ style of quilting. Most of her quilts are wholecloth or feature minimal piecing so she can just get on with the fun part – quilting! Heather loves the feel of quality fabric on her fingertips, choosing beautifully coloured threads to build texture and transforming a quilt top into something magic simply makes her heart sing. ABOUT THE TUTORS IN 2019 KATHERINE JONES, TAS Kat made her first ever quilt in 2009 but did not start quilting seriously until 2014 when she entered the Tasmanian State Quilt Show for the first time. Kat is best known for her success at QuiltCon 2017, with Bling, the queen-size princess- cut diamond quilt, winning Best of Show. However, her favourite technique is what she describes as semi-improvisational bias appliqué and is the focus of a lot of her teaching and patterns. She now works full time as a quilter, making her own show quilts, quilting for clients, teaching and writing patterns. DEBORAH LOUIE, NSW Deborah has been teaching machine quilting and machine appliqué since 2000, bringing many rewarding experiences for her and great achievements for her students. EMIKO TODA LOEB, JAPAN Emiko has made more than 90 quilts, reinventing Japanese and Western patterns. In over 50 quilts she has developed a unique reversible Log Cabin technique. Emiko has published two books and has enjoyed success with major solo exhibitions in museums in Stony Brook, NY; Paducah, KY and Lincoln, NE in the USA and at the International Forum Tokyo. RACHAEL PORTER, NSW Rachael has been sewing for more than 20 years and teaching for around eight. She won first place in her category for her Victorian Tiles Quilt at the 2016 Sydney Quilt Show. Rachael has a love of hand sewing – in particular English paper piecing. She is also partial to a bit of fussy cutting and is always delighted to see how it can add another dimension to projects. ABOUT THE TUTORS IN 2019 RACHAELDAISY (NSW) Rachaeldaisy has become synonymous with bold, colourful, interesting, whimsical, eye popping quilts. She uses 3D elements such as prairie points, yoyos, chunky appliqué and organic quilting to create beautifully unique textured work. Rachaeldaisy’s fresh interpretation of the art of quilting has seen her quilts awarded with many prizes including Best in Show at both 2015 and 2016 Australian Modern Quilt Shows, Best in Show at 2016 Sydney Quilt Show, Most Innovative at the 2017 Dare to Differ Contemporary Textiles Exhibition, Best Use of Colour at 2017 Sydney Quilt Show. Her quilts have been featured in quilt shows, galleries and publications nationally and internationally.
GILLIAN TRAVIS, UK Gillian has won many awards for her artful quilts which she displays around the world. She studied for her City and Guilds in Embroidery in the early 90s when her children were young; following this she started to teach textiles both in the UK and internationally. Having trained as a landscape designer, Gillian loved bringing these design skills to make quilts. Many years later she is still making quilts and teaching from her studio at her home in the South Pennines in Yorkshire. Most of Gillian’s quilts are inspired by the many photos she takes while travelling. Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli is a renowned author, artist and quilter whose talents have been featured in the Steven Spielberg movie ‘How to Make an American Quilt’. As a freelance artist Jane combined her artistic talent and love of quilting to create ¼ Inch Publishing and has, for the past 20 years successfully designed and produced books, patterns, fabrics and notions, many reflecting the richness of her Mexican roots.
Jess Wheelahan’s awardwinning textile works fuse inspiration from the world of art and design with her experience working in the fashion industry. Described as inimitable, left of centre and unconventional, Jess seeks to create quilts which engage the audience and evoke a sense of curiosity. Recently Jess has worked with Australian fashion house ‘Romance Was Born’ and her patchwork pieces were shown in their couture collection in Paris.
Jane has worked with a visionary creative team of studio designers to create fabric lines that represent her Latin heritage. With her vibrant choice of colours, patterns and texture designs, Jane’s natural influence inspires the flamboyant quilter in us all.

HOW TO BOOK Before booking your classes, read the descriptions in this program, and use the Timetable on page 3 to plan your class selections. If you want to see the Class Requirements – the things you will need to bring – see the class descriptions.
Easy Step by Step booking 1. Decide which package you will take up: Gold Pass, Two Day (Thursday-Friday), Two Day (Saturday-Sunday) or Social Events. See page 14 for inclusions. 2. Decide which social events you will attend. You must book these even if they are included in your chosen package.
When you are ready to book, go to the 'How to Book' page, select the package you want, and then select your classes.
3. Choose your classes and have your credit card handy. 4. Visit aqc.com.au and go to the 'How to Book' page. Complete your details then follow the prompts to select your classes and make your payment.
You will need a Visa or Mastercard credit card and any security/bank pin number necessary for your card. An email will be sent confirming your booking.

Class booking conditions FAQs about the classes
Payment of fees must accompany all bookings otherwise the booking cannot be processed.
Why are the classes in packages? AQC classes are part of a convention and therefore are available to Convention Delegates only. Class packages include social events, catering and a number of inclusions. If you only want to attend AQC as a casual visitor, there are plenty of options – attend social events, or just buy a ticket to the Expo and Quilt Show – there is a full program of free workshops and short classes to choose from. The Expo program will be released in March, 2019. Can I pay by cheque? You can pay by cheque, but you will need to make a phone booking. Please have several class preferences chosen. Your class place cannot be confirmed until your payment is received.
If there is a kit, you will need to pay the kit fee directly to the tutor. Most classes will require the student to bring specific supplies with them. The requirements list for each class are posted on the website. Do I need to bring a sewing machine? In classes where machines are required, sponsor companies will provide them so you do not have to bring your own. A technical assistant will be available in class to help you. You may bring your own machine if you choose but no technical assistance will be available. What is included in the class fee?

Catering during the day will be sponsored by:
• Cancellations received in writing before March 10, 2019 will receive a 75 per cent refund of fees paid and will be at Expertise Events’ sole discretion. After this date there will be no refunds. All cancellations must be forwarded to Expertise Events in writing. Please note that substitutions of the delegate may be accepted in lieu of a cancellation, at the discretion of Expertise Events but, due to limited class numbers, class selection changes cannot be made. • We recommend travel insurance in case you need to cancel. • To take advantage of any early bird rate, bookings must be made before November 30, 2018. • In the event of a tutor cancellation due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, the tutor will be replaced and no refunds will be available in this instance.
