Their stunning quilts are displayed with matching bags that will take your breath away. Each artist has interpreted the thoughtprovoking theme Reveal or Conceal with an eye to the things people choose to either conceal from the world or reveal to others.

he Experimentalists’ group formed after about 20 Canberra-based quiltmakers attended an exhilarating fourday masterclass with legendary international quilter Nancy Crow in 1997. To celebrate the 20th anniversary they decided to make A4 pieces. There is no theme, but each piece reflects each member’s personality and method. Catch the daily floortalk at 11am.

15 wonderful years

I

t’s funny isn’t it, how an idea can grow and in, a relatively short period of time, become an icon. Such was the case with the Australasian Quilt Convention. It began with an idea to create a new event – one that would inspire quiltmakers and textile artists from far and wide; an event that would have a world-wide reputation and be a ‘must-attend’ event for thousands. An event that would bring the quilting world to Australia. When we first came up with the concept, we imagined the best Australian quiltmakers, teachers and works, international tutors, international quilt displays, sumptuous social events and awards. We wanted to create an experience for delegates that would be second to none in Australia.

From the first AQC in 2005 at the Melbourne Convention Centre, it grew. If you attended back then, you may recall the retailers and the classes were far flung all around the venue. Up escalators to social events, downstairs to conference rooms and the retailers somewhere in the middle with trading tables!

20

Congratulations to the exhibitors who have attended AQC every year from the very beginning: Baby Lock Australia Barossa Quilt & Craft Cottage Bernina Australia Blue Willow Cottage

The social events were enjoyable from the very beginning and the Gala Dinner a night to remember. Wendy Smith won the National Quilt Award for Dream Garden and, in her speech, she mentioned it was like the Academy Awards for quilters. The late Narelle Grieve won the first Rajah Award and in her usual style, accepted it with elegance and grace amid the shock of the announcement. We started at the Melbourne Convention Centre, with one year at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre [Jeff’s Shed], then the Royal Exhibition Building became the home of AQC from 2009. With our 15th AQC, we look back at the many achievements and are very proud to have this event as Australia’s own. It is important to recognise the wonderful tutors, marvellous retailers who always come to the expo with new and exciting products and those special exhibitors who share their skills and knowledge in the education on the expo floor. And most of all, we thank you, the AQC delegates and visitors without whom there would be no Australasian Quilt Convention.
