WELCOME Dear Craft Fair Friends, Our annual visit to Canberra is always a highlight of the year. New things to look out for are the Pop Up classes with Arnold’s Scrapbooking and My Little Bead Shop which have proved to be a hit in other cities. Even if you are not usually into paper or jewellery making, you will find these hands-on classes surprisingly easy and satisfying – full of tips and clever hints to create cards, bracelets and earrings – perfect to stash away for Christmas gifts. If you’re up for something new, have a chat to Meredith Scott our guest artist who is a whizz with mosaics and conducting some great little workshops on her stand too. Her pendants and necklaces are just lovely and quick to make. Plus there are some gorgeous displays of textile art and quilts. The SAQA 25th anniversary pieces are a special treat with pieces by quilters from around the world, mainly the USA – and the Canberra Quilters Annual Members Exhibition is always a feast for the eyes. And of course there is the shopping with our exhibitors – this really is your once-a-year opportunity to stock up on things that you won’t find easily in your local neighbourhood. Make the most of it – see you there!
PS. Pick up your free copy of The Australian Women’s Weekly at the door, while stocks last.
Make a cute fabic card case for just $20 with Studio Mio, details on Page 31

TOTEMS ON SHOW SEE THESE GORGEOUS FREEFORM TOTEMS AT THE FAIR Freeform knitting and crochet styles have been effectively combined by Prudence Mapstone to produce a display of more than eight arresting totem shapes. Traditionally a totem represents a kinship group and while some poles celebrate cultural beliefs, others – such as the ones in this display – are mostly artistic. All but one are created in freeform style, however ‘Light at the end of the Tunnel’ is created using a style of knitting called intarsia – a technique where fields of different colours and materials appear to be inlaid in one another, but are in fact all separate pieces, put together like a jigsaw puzzle. The vibrant colours, different textiles and techniques will amaze you. See what fun can be had with knitting and crochet!
