WELCOME! Dear Craft Fair Friends, Our Canberra Fair will have a new look this year – with creative installations down a centre aisle for your viewing pleasure. These mini-exhibitions will also be a source of ideas for your crafty pursuits. Amazing wearable art with our clever Art U Wear finalists’ entries will be on show together with our guest artist Svenja. She’s an international award winner and her costumes are awesome – check out her demonstrations too – she’s a whiz with leather. Japanese textiles seem to hold a special fascination for anyone with a love of textiles. Of interest lately are the boro-boro stitched pieces born out of a need to save scraps, reuse, layer and reinforce, giving these pieces a particular charm. BeBe Bold presents an exhibition of beautiful vintage Japanese textiles in this style. Craft collaborations often produce amazing work and freeform knit and crochet artist Prudence Mapstone has invited knitters from around the world to create a special tribute to 50 years of the concept of Flower Power. The result is an amazing 10-metre long hanging carpet of bright flowers in yarn. Plus there’ll be quilts from all corners of the country alongside the Canberra Quilters annual Members Exhibition. If that isn’t enough to get you there, check out our workshop program and don’t forget the shopping – a great chance to stock up on supplies for the year! See you there!

Plus, the first visitors to arrive can collect a FREE copy of The Australian Women’s Weekly, a gift to you from our generous sponsor – while stocks last.

Experience a day at the fair... “I am so excited to be ambassador for the Craft & Quilt Fair in 2015! Craft is a great way to make unique things for your home and family. It’s a wonderful way to express yourself. Some things you just make time for!”

SVENJA HAS THE ‘WOW’ SEE SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST AT WORK

Meet our guest, Brisbane textile artist Svenja – creator of amazing, internationally award-winning wearable art. Svenja’s textile art pieces have been widely exhibited and awarded across Australia and internationally. See some of these eye-catching pieces on display at the fair and watch Svenja demonstrating some of the textile art techniques she uses to create them. In 2013 two of her pieces won awards at the world-renowned World of Wearable Art TM (WOW exhibition), held in September at Wellington, New Zealand. “I very much enjoy the whole process of bringing a concept to fruition through the initial research, design, and planning stages, then through the hands-on steps of dyeing, embellishing, and assembling the finished article.”

MADE BEAUTIFUL “For me, scrapbooking is about the photo and reliving that memory. I don’t think I have a particular style – it’s usually how I am feeling or what I am doing that dictates what I create and inspires me to try new techniques or add texture to projects.” Demonstrations run daily, throughout the day.

100 YEARS, 100 QUILTS LEST WE FORGET In honour of the centenary of the Gallipoli landing, quilters across Australia and New Zealand were invited to participate in a unique challenge. With the ‘Lest We Forget Quilt Challenge – 100 Years, 100 Quilts’ quiltmakers from across Australia and New Zealand were invited to contribute a 25cm square quilt, exploring what Lest We Forget means to them. Each quilt has a special story and will be on display at the fair. This display commemorates one of Australia and New Zealand’s most defining times and is a tribute to all those affected by conflicts over the years. Many quiltmakers have added a dedication to their quilt, and tell the story behind each piece in the accompanying statement. See them at the fair.

FOCUS ON TEXTILE ART What makes the ACT Textile Art Association different? The work being exhibited at the Craft & Quilt Fair in Canberra this year, should answer that question Unlike other textile groups, which specialise in one area, the ACTTAA members like the cross fertilisation which comes from being involved in many areas. Dyeing, printing, embroidery, felting, knitting, crochet, beading, deconstructing and reconstructing old garments, basketry, hat making, fabric piecing and embellishing are just some of the techniques used. The display will include three of the year’s activities: Express Yourself - some self portraits plus other pieces which employ a wide variety of techniques. Garments from the Christine White Workshop – these were made during a class with the very talented Christine White, who has been a regular successful entrant in The New Zealand World of Wearable Art shows, along with her creative partner Bonnie Begg. Garments were first stencil printed and then stitched and cut – a new twist on the reverse appliqué technique. ACTTAA’s regular Summer Challenge was aprons. Members let loose on a wide variety of fabrics - recycled vintage tablecloths, ties, curtain fabric and some readymade aprons, giving them the ACTTAA ‘treatment’. Members will be demonstrating techniques, and would love visitors to come and chat. They welcome new people to the group which meets at the Woden Senior Citizen’s Centre in Philip. VINTAGE TREASURES See beautiful Boro work on display at the fair Here is a glimpse of this traditional Japanese textile art In boromono (literally worn out/rag things), scraps and pieces of old textiles are given new life. Born of hardship, boro textiles recycle, mend, patch, and reinforce for warmth. Cotton and hemp cloth were so valuable and scarce in the poor northern parts of Japan, that every scrap was saved and reused. Cold snowy winters meant that jackets, kimono and sleeping covers all needed to be as warm as possible, and so the stitching together of multiple layers was essential. The word boro-boro in Japanese means ‘worn out’ and for many years, these textiles were unappreciated as reminders of hardship. They are however one of the great textile traditions of Japan and the world. This saving of scrap, reusing, layering, patching and reinforcing through stitching is at the heart of sashiko, kogin, chikuchiku and much contemporary Japanese quilting. Modern textile artists like Akiko Ike and Junko Maeda have taken this tradition and extended it into new art forms, but holding true to using old cloth and simple stitching, finding beauty in aligning unexpected colours, patterns and textures. Boro is not a method, it is an inspiring folk tradition of saving and stitching which still speaks to us today. Come and see the wonderful world of Japanese boromono textiles at the fair. Presented by BeBe Bold.

The works were inspired by the Australian War Memorial’s collection of 900 postcards which were posted to Australia by soldiers at the front. The original postcards were mostly made in France and featured flowers, sayings, motifs and military regalia. FIBRECRAFT FIBRE, FLEECE, FELT AND MORE... Meet Tabitha Bilaniwskyj-Zarins at the fair and see her demonstrations of fibrecraft. Tabandy Farm is located at Candelo, NSW and produces home grown sheep wool, camelid and goat fibre and Tabitha is a grower, broker, generator of fibre, spinner and felt artist. Tabitha’s belief is there is a wool or fibre for any purpose and wool diversity is the key to Australia’s future. All wool is beautiful – it just needs to be used to enhance the best of its ability. We have an army of beautiful artists and handcrafters in Australia which is equal to a growing industry turning all of our local wool into high quality hand-made garments and home wares. Tabitha dyes all her own wool and turns it into stunning felt art and wearables. She will showcase the dyeing procedure before and after spinning and felting. She will have specifically designed tops/rovings for the felter and spinner, craftsperson, and textile artist. Wool used includes Merino, Perendale, Border Leicester and Suffolk. There are grey and chocolate coloured rovings also. They have the handle of a fine merino and the structural qualities of a more textured wool. The journey of knowledge started with pet sheep over 20 years ago and now she manages a small flock of mixed adored, rescued or unwanted sheep of around 60 animals. Also in the flock are four camels, two donkeys, cows, handful of goats and an array of chooks, ducks and geese. Another passion is to promote and find a market for local small farmers of rare breeds of sheep in her local area. So far Tabitha is turning Lincoln and Awassi into a weavers’ and tapestry artists’ yarn and hopes to soon turn some local Ryeland into luxurious, natural wadding. Tabitha has appeared in the television program River Cottage Australia and writes for PIP Australian Permaculture Magazine. 24

This year is 50 years since the term ‘Flower Power’ was first coined to describe a non-violent protest against the Vietnam War, and to celebrate more than 207 fibre aficionados from 24 countries have created brightly coloured motifs and scrumbles with a flower power theme. The flower power movement of passive resistance rapidly spread from its beginnings in Berkeley, California, and eventually the term ‘flower child’ became synonymous with ‘hippie’ and a counterculture embracing psychedelic music and art sprang up. This art style is often recognisable from its simple, graphic, brightly coloured, poster-like designs. At the same time, many flower children sought a return to basics and to simple living. Traditional crafts had a resurgence, but often with a twist, and a distinctive style of no-rules crochet became a small part of the hippie, grass roots ethos. Prudence Mapstone has created a unique and spectacular collaborative artwork by combining the hundreds of motifs into a 10 metre long flower garden. It will be on display for the first time at the fair. See this magnificent work in all its glory!
