COLLAGE TO STITCH

From Pa per Play to Textile Art Presented by Four X Four, this exhibition will be on display at the fair.

CollageTO to Stitch is the work of four OLLAGE STITCH

South Australian textile artists and is the culmination of one year’s exploration of collage as a tool for developing ideas. The themes chosen and the approaches taken reflect personal passions and generally revolve around nature. Flowers, trees and gardens were frequent topics for reflection by artists Maxine Fry, Ruth Galpin, Suzanne Gummow and Sandra Obst. See the collages along with the resulting textile artworks on display at the Perth Craft & Quilt Fair and meet artist Suzanne Gummow.

Details: Collage to Stitch exhibition presented by Four X Four. On display at the Perth Craft & Quilt Fair

Meet the artist Suzanne Gummow Suzanne has been a dedicated teacher for over 40 years and is currently teaching Visual Arts. She has written and lectures in a nationally accredited Certificate in Art Textiles and also teaches throughout Australia. In January 1999 she was awarded an Art Scholarship to visit India to study textiles and then to exhibit her works on India. She has had several solo exhibitions in Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne and Adelaide and in 2015 had a solo show Flowers Always. In her words, “The need to explore my thoughts in textiles is a passionate driving force. Playing with strong colours, painting in rich thread, bringing together tactile surfaces in my textiles constantly gives me an amazing sense of excitement each time I create a new piece.” Meet Suzanne at the fair and see her work in the Collage to Stitch display. QuiltWest 2017 A Fascinating and diverse exhibition

This year the QuiltWest 2017 exhibition will have an amazing display of quilts organised by the West Australian Quilters’ Association – with the theme ‘A New Heart’ One of the many highlights will be the extraordinary raffle quilt ‘Mercy Flight’ donated and pieced by Di Mansfield. Quilted by Debbie Barrett Quilting, fabric and wadding donated by Handcrafters House and labelling by Labelled and Bound. All proceeds from the raffle will go to The Royal Flying Doctor Services, to show gratitude for the hard work they do in saving lives.

Sit N Sew demonstration Join the Sit N Sew table daily between 10am and 3pm and see demonstrations of patchwork and quilting and try your hand too! Specialist groups within the West Australian Quilters’ Association Guild will also be showing and demonstrating their techniques and activities. These include Contemporary Quilters, Hexagon and Crazy Patchwork as well as Community Quilts.

Exotica

Above: Mercy Flight by Di Mansfield; Below: Yoko Saito design from WAQA members

This group of quilts is the result of evenings spent exploring the potential of unusual – and often exotic – fabrics not often considered in the making of quilts. Among these are furnishing fabric samples, woollen fabrics and glamorous sheers, silks and satins. The initial brief was to work within a chevron design, but to play within this as the fabrics would allow. The majority of work was quilt as you go as the nature of many of the textiles was not conducive to heavy seams or overquilting. Striking and visually appealing quilts have resulted from these explorations, often surprising quiltmakers used to working with traditional cotton fabric.

Yoko Saito Inspiration Enjoy a selection of quilts made from the designs and patterns of Yoko Saito using a variety of Japanese yarn dyed fabrics.

Inner Journeys by SAlt

This exhibition is the work of six South Australian textile artists, the SAlt group. See it in the QuiltWest area. The work displayed reflects the artists’ unique and highly personal responses to the five themes – the physical journey, the emotional, spiritual, creative and the journey of discovery.

SAlt (South Australian living textiles) is a group of six independent textiles practitioners. Collaboratively the SAlt group sets challenges to inspire, explore, extend, respond to, critique and reflect on each theme. The six members are: Judy Bushby, Suzanne Gummow, Julie Haddrick, Francie Mewett, Sara Bell Smith and newcomer Wendy Thiele.

Giving all kids creativity The Craft for Kids Foundation was established for the collection and distribution of craft supplies, to give to charities for children in their care to use in craft activities. Craft allows children to explore their creativity and is pure expression through their eyes with no rules or boundaries. The materials they work with are tactile, colourful and varied and provide children of all capacities to explore; with the satisfaction of making something as a gift or to keep. Craft for Kids Foundation will donate craft supplies to charities that care for Australian children who are physically, emotionally, financially or geographically disadvantaged. You are invited to bring in your unwanted craft supplies and place them in the special Craft for Kids Foundation area at the fair. Your donation will be stored in Expertise Events’ warehouse then delivered to charities. Craft items you can donate include yarn, fabric, paper, lace, braid, craft tools, glue and embellishments.
