Welcome to 5 days of
Dear Craft Fair Friends,
The big one is on its way to Darling Harbour and we’re excited – after all it is the biggest craft and quilt event in the Southern Hemisphere! And we have some very special things for you…
We are thrilled to present precious boro works from Amuse Museum in Asakusa Tokyo, exhibited for the first time outside Japan. Boro is the term used to describe Japanese textiles that have been patched and stitched, usually with sashiko stitching or simple running stitches.
We welcome guest artists Meredith Woolnough and Naomi Huntsman. Meredith is a textile artist whose medium of choice is machine embroidery. Her elegant embroidered traceries capture the beauty and fragility of nature. Naomi is a Brisbane-based designer with a passion for providing an alternative to fast fashion and consumption. She will be kind of N demonstrating sewing techniques IN SP IR AT IO and teaching rag rugmaking. In our Studio we present some unique classes with inspirational experts – beeswax wraps with Kirsty Mootz, resin jewellery and polymer clay earrings with Nadine Sharpe, weaving with Natalie Miller, brush lettering with Alena Tsarkova, watercolour with Meredith Woolnough and screen printing with Kitty Cardwell – you’ll need to book quickly as places are limited!

Meet Meredith Woolnough Machine embroidery is the medium of choice for visual artist Meredith Woolnough. Best known for her nature inspired embroideries, Meredith’s work is held in public, private and corporate collections worldwide. Meredith’s elegant embroidered traceries capture the beauty and fragility of nature in knotted embroidery threads. The work explores the sculptural possibilities of a unique drawing technique that utilises a domestic sewing machine and a base fabric that dissolves in water. Through a delicate system of tiny stitches Meredith creates intricate and complex openwork compositions that are then carefully pinned in shadowboxes like preserved specimens.

Boro: a rare exhibition from For the first time, selected boro pieces from the Amuse Museum will be exhibited outside Japan. We are lucky to have been able to secure a display of these precious works at Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra Craft & Quilt Fairs in 2019. In recent years boro is becoming known around the world, as textile admirers appreciate the beauty of clothing and homeware pieces that have been patched and stitched over and over to strengthen the fabric and extend the life of the piece so that nothing is wasted. Originally boro – which can be defined as ‘rags’ – came about through necessity but the artistic beauty is now recognised and antique boro pieces are sought after collectibles and the technique is popular among contemporary craftspeople. The Amuse Museum in Japan has an outstanding exhibition of work collected by Mr Chuzaburo Tanaka, an ethnologist and author born in Aomori prefecture in 1933. Mr Tanaka was a private collector of more than 30,000 pieces of rare and culturally significant items of folk art, antiques and clothes. The high quality of his collection has received praise from the public figures such as Shuji Terayama and Akira Kurosawa, who used some of the pieces from Mr Tanaka’s collection in their films and books. Among Mr Tanaka’s collection, some boro pieces have been used in a household through several generations. The Amuse Museum closed for renovations in March 2019 so only during this period the boro works can travel abroad, and will return to Japan to be exhibited at Tokyo Olympics in August 2020.

Some Enchanted Evening Step back in time with The Cavalcade of History and Fashion to relive Hollywood glamour and the romantic gowns of the 1950s ballroom. Imagine floating around the dance floor in full floor length gowns of taffeta, lace, satin and tulle net over voluminous petticoats. Bodices were strapless, halter neck or with short sleeves with tiny waists and accented with draping and cascading bows. The colours were rich and jewel like, the look was glamorous and sophisticated and very much influenced by Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’. You can see these beautiful creations and more at the fair.

Craft – the new yoga!
It’s well known that our mental, physical and emotional health are all connected, but how can craft improve our general well-being? Craft can have surprising health and wellness benefits, from simple relaxation achieved by the rhythm of stitching or crochet, through to reconciliation of emotional conflicts as a result of art therapy. Crafters have reported that creative pursuits have helped in the management of addictions, to reduce anxiety and to calm negative behaviour. The rhythm of knitting and the mathematics required keep the mind focused on the moment rather than letting anxiety take over.
Repetition involved in many crafts is soothing and conducive to a state of ‘flow’ – engagement where other worries and stresses are forgotten for at least a while.

health in middle and old age resulting in improved memory. Knitting is being recommended as a pain management technique by health practitioners. At the end of World War 1, this diversional therapy was used to treat soldiers suffering from what we now know as post-traumatic stress syndrome, and has now resurfaced today with psychologists prescribing knitting for pain management and colouring-in as a relaxation technique. Mindfulness – benefits for our mental health can be induced more easily with repetitive simple tasks such as knitting. A meditative activity keeps the hands busy and the mind focused, which dissipates anxiety and facilitates calm. Zentangle takes craft activity to a new meditative level, and people who paint or stitch also report a feeling of calm. Enhanced self-esteem can come from making something. For children, craft can also provide a non-tech, non-screen activity to detox from the digital world. Doing craft encourages kids to pay attention to detail, to control impulses and to express themselves and helps in the development of fine-motor skills. However holistic health requires more than physical and mental wellbeing. Social, spiritual and emotional aspects are also part of wellness and craft can address these needs. Social wellness comes from being connected to people in your community and craft groups can
provide that community as well as the friendships and shared interests that help people thrive. Guilds, men’s sheds and craft friendship groups encourage social connections. Spiritual health involves having a sense of purpose that can come from creating and belonging to a group is even better. Many quilt groups have programs to donate finished works to people in need. Aussie Hero Quilts has had a positive influence on the lives of hundreds of our Defence Force personnel. Angel Gowns helps fill a void for families affected by the loss of a baby. Many groups fundraise to help charities too. Connectedness to tradition and to previous generations can also come from doing craft. Craft can also promote emotional wellness. It can be a form of creative expression, and even to work through feelings of trauma or loss. Making commemorative works such as memory quilts, painting, journaling, scrapbooking, lettering or textile art can all be used to journey through a
difficult period. Just the activity of making can provide a much-needed clearer head space. Intellectual wellness can come from lifelong learning and craft can provide opportunities for exchange of knowledge, learning from each other and teaching others. People who do craft report mental health benefits such as reduced stress and less anxiety. At the fair, we’ll promote the wellness benefits of craft through our new Craft Wellness Wheel, educating people about the powerful role craft can play in our general health and well-being.
