VOL .15 / IS SUE 4 GREAT NEW LOCATION!

SOUVENIR COLLECTORS’ EDITION

July 9 – 13, 2014 1

WELCOME Dear Craft Fair Friends, Our 21st Craft & Quilt Fair is a landmark event – the first public exhibition to be held at the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island. Glebe Island is not actually an island – it is a peninsula and accessible by car, taxi, FREE ferry or FREE bus service. We recommend you take the ferry – it’s a beautiful way to start a great day out! If you’ve been to the event before at Darling Harbour, the new venue is only a short bus or ferry ride from there. These public transport services are FREE and will operate on the fair-opening days. If you want to drive, there is more parking available than ever before, and it is all dedicated to visitors of the fair. For fees and details, turn to page 8. Along with a new venue, there are a number of new attractions this year to entertain you: fantastic textile art, a handmade room set from one of Australia’s leading suppliers of soft furnishing fabric, a spotlight on something different – shell craft and some wonderful handmade vintage fashion tips. Come along and see gorgeous craft in this wonderful new location. See you there,

Plus, the first visitors to arrive can collect a FREE copy of The Australian Women’s Weekly, a gift to you from our generous sponsor.

People are making poppies for a commemoration of Anzac Day 2015. For more information on how to be part of what will be an amazing handmade field of poppies, turn to page 43.

Experience a day at the fair... “I am so excited to be joining the Craft & Quilt Fair team in 2014! Craft is a great way to make unique things for your home and family. It’s a wonderful way to express yourself. Make sure you join me at the Craft & Quilt Fairs. Some things you just make time for!”

BEACH SHACK CHIC MEET OUR GUEST ARTIST MEREDITH SCOTT AT THE FAIR! Through the ages shells were used to decorate a wide range of surfaces from mosaic floors, exterior walls, the interiors of shell houses, clay pots, picture frames and the lids of wooden boxes. Shell craft is currently enjoying a revival and you can see a beautiful shell art necklace and make at the fair! Meredith Scott creates stunning, contemporary mosaics and jewellery using a vibrant mixture of glass, shells, recycled and found objects. She has designed a variety of sculptures, art and jewellery that were inspired by her natural surroundings from local beaches and waterways. Some of her work has been selected to feature in an exhibition at Sydney’s Parliament House. Meredith says, “Since my interest in mosaics I have been using many found objects including shells. I suppose I first liked collecting shells as a child as I used to comb the beaches on our family holidays on the south coast. I would make shell necklaces and construct sand castles and pictures and decorate them with scattered shells like every other kid. I still love to comb my local beach”. Meredith only collects empty shells with no living animals in them and also uses discarded oyster shells from restaurants. She buys Paua shell from a company in New Zealand which uses the discarded shell and operates under strict guidelines from the fisheries department. Other shells used are from cultivated farming usually from developing countries such as Philippines and Indonesia where shallow water shells come from. Local people can make a living on collecting shells and the shell industry has also opened a new market for them. See Meredith’s work displayed at the fair and learn a new technique with beautiful materials in her hands-on classes.

10

www.craftevents.com.au

“YOU CAN’T GET MUCH MORE EXOTIC THAN A MIRROR OR A VASE COVERED IN SHELLS” Join a shell art class with Meredith Meredith will be conducting hands-on Shell Art workshops using mother of pearl shell as a base with varied paua shell pieces and speciality tiles added. Just bring your imagination and get started! Daily one hour classes are at: 11am, 2pm and 3.30pm Cost: $35 includes kit* Meredith will be taking bookings at her display stand. Book early for these popular classes – numbers are limited! *kits vary slightly and will include oval or round base with a variety of tiles and paua shell. Gift box, chain and clip included.

QUEEN OF TEA COSIES LOANI IS BACK WITH A NEW BOOK! It turns out everyone loves a tea cosy. It makes a perfect gift, no one has to wear it and it reminds us of our grandmothers. PLUS it’s very Australian. Loani Prior has even more fun and creative tea cosies in her new book Pretty Funny Tea Cosies & other beautiful knitted things because “ideas come from everywhere, like Lady Gaga, Art Deco lamps, tribal masks, a coral reef, even Melbourne Cup Day”, she says. The ‘other things’ in the book include knitted trinkets and embellishments.

“I reckon a designer needs two qualities above all else, and that is the gall to think you can do anything, and a strong inner critic to recognise when you aren’t quite there yet.” See Loani’s latest knitted objets d’art on display at the fair, where she will also be signing copies of her new book. You’ll find her near Can Do Books, Stand B03.

SPECIAL DISPLAY 5000 POPPIES: A TRIBUTE OF RESPECT AND REMEMBRANCE The poppy has become a symbol of both great loss in war as well as a sign of support and hope for those left behind. The 5000 Poppies project is a crafting community tribute by Melbourne duo Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight. It is in honour of Australian servicemen and women and their families for their service and sacrifice in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over the last 100 years. This number is now 25,000 and anyone can contribute. Poppies can be crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn from any materials. Any shade of red can be used and poppies should be no more than 15cm in diameter. There is no limit to the amount of poppies that can be submitted by anyone and there is no entry fee, just provide your own materials.
