2016 AQC Challenge Winners & finalists
Working on the program for the fair this year feels like a trip around the craft world. From the USA, Tula Pink ... one of the hottest designers in the world at present, is coming to the fair for three days. From France, is Cecile Franconie, our guest and an embroiderer whose work is breathtakingly gorgeous and quite different in style. Then, channelling the Swinging ‘60s in London are two displays a-go-go-ing with hip fashion and a Carnaby Street theme. Pop over and check it out at the NSW Embroiderers Guild and Cavalcade of Fashion stands where they’ll be breaking out the mini-skirts and stepping into hot pants. What a Quant idea! Now head to the Far East where we will explore the simple beauty of Japanese boro textiles. At the fair, two of our exhibitors who share a passion for boro – which is the term for worn, patched and mended cloth items such as clothing and bed covers, have collaborated to create a display of bags, quilts, jackets and other Japanese items for your viewing pleasure. Thank you BeBe Bold and Wabi-Sabi Designs.

The collection, dating from the late 1700s, has been used by its custodians, a volunteer not-for-profit community group, to share Australia’s social and fashion history for over 50 years. We share this history with community audiences at historical, educational and public charitable events and exhibitions in city and regional areas.
Tula is comiSyngdntoey thCreaft & Quilt fair She’s a Rock Star*
HER NAME IS PINK And she’s coming to the fair! *in the craft and quilting world
We are excited to announce Tula Pink will be our very special guest artist on three days of the fair, and will hold three special presentations during the fair! Tula who? Tula Pink is a USA-based illustrator, fabric designer, quilter, author, maker and generally good person who enjoys talking about herself. Her signature designs have been adapted to fabrics, woven ribbons, paper products, needlepoint kits, embroidery patterns and sewing machines. Tula’s designs can be found in independent fabric shops and retailers all over the world. Tula is most recognised in her industries for her dark sense of humour, a flair for hiding animals in the strangest of places (artistically, not literally) and her boldly unique use of colour and pattern. Tula comes from the ‘more is more’ school of design where there is never enough space and always room for that one last thing. On three days of the fair, Tula will be holding an entertaining presentation and trunk show. Hear about the journey of her inspiration and design process which has led to her amazing success worldwide. This will be followed by question time, an opportunity for you to get one on one with Tula.
For your chance to meet Tula in person and hear her inspirational story, book your place now! Her one hour presentation will be held at 12:30pm on Thursday June 23, Friday June 24, and Saturday June 25. Tickets to the presentations are $49.95 each. This does not include entry to the Craft & Quilt Fair. Book now as places are limited and will fill fast! Visit www.craftevents.com.au and go to Craft & Quilt Fair. The presentation is only open to visitors to the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair 2016. Entry tickets to the fair must also be purchased. Brought to you by

Who’s who at the fair Here are just some of the celebrities you’ll see…
Beautiful Boro Like wine and cheese, some textiles just get better with age. ‘Boro’ is the term for patched and stitched Japanese textiles, and is literally translated as ‘rags’. With fading, patching and layers of stitching, these textiles develop a beautiful characteristic, like patina on antique furniture.

Hearts Project A touching display of hearts, by members of Angel Gowns Australia will be at the fair. The group’s volunteer seamstresses were asked to use remnants from donated wedding dresses to make small padded and embellished heart shapes. These will be displayed and then sold to raise funds to help continue our program of gifting Angel Gowns Australia garments to bereaved families. You are also invited to sit and make a heart to contribute to the display, with materials provided. There will also be a display of vintage wedding gowns which have been donated including some fabulous 1960s era dresses. Also, there will be beautiful Angel Gowns garments on display, made by group members from around Australia.
About Angel Gowns Angel Gowns Australia Inc. is a nationally registered charity and not-for-profit organisation. They hope to touch the hearts of all Australians, especially those who have experienced the unimaginable death, illness or disability of their baby or child. Volunteer seamstresses lovingly handcraft beautiful Angel Gown garments from previously donated wedding dresses from brides who want the love from their wedding day to be made into tiny Angel Gowns garments. These are then gifted to bereaved families through hospitals and funeral homes to honour little angels who are stillborn, who have not survived an illness, or are born prematurely and don’t make it home from hospital.

BeBe Bold and Wabi-Sabi Designs have collaborated to create a display of beautiful textiles of this kind. There are some very old pieces and some that are newly created in the boro style with precious leftover fabrics being used to create new, character-filled items. In boromono (literally worn out/rag things), scraps and pieces of old textiles are given new life. Born of hardship, boro textiles recycle, mend, patch, and reinforce for warmth. Cold snowy winters meant that jackets, kimono and sleeping covers all needed to be as warm as possible, and so the stitching together of multiple layers was essential.
Savour a display of Japanese boro textiles at the fair Boro is not a method, it is an inspiring folk tradition of saving and stitching which still speaks to us today. Come and see the wonderful world of Japanese boromono textiles at the fair. Pictured: Japanese boro textiles from the collection of BeBe Bold and Wabi-Sabi Designs.

Giving all kids creativity Expertise Events, organisers of the Craft & Quilt Fair, has introduced a new initiative in 2016 – the Craft for Kids Foundation. The Foundation is for the collection and distribution of craft supplies, to give to charities for children in their care to use in craft activities. Craft allows children to explore their creativity and is pure expression through their eyes with no rules or boundaries. The materials they work with are tactile, colourful and varied and provide children of all capacities to explore; with the satisfaction of making something as a gift or to keep. Craft for Kids Foundation will donate craft supplies to charities that care for Australian children who are physically, emotionally, financially or geographically disadvantaged. Expertise Events are also committing their craft experts to design and produce projects that they will teach the children to make at special events. You are invited to bring in your unwanted craft supplies and place them in the special Craft for Kids Foundation area at the fair. Your donation will be stored in Expertise Events’ warehouse then delivered to charities once or twice yearly, as agreed. Craft items you can donate include yarn, fabric, paper, lace, braid, craft tools, glue, embellishments. Items that won’t be accepted include: money, unfinished projects, knitting needles, crochet hooks or pattern books.
To enter, complete the competition entry form you receive when you buy your ticket and put it in the barrel at the fair. The winners will be drawn at the end of the last day of the event and the winners will be notified the following week. For full terms and conditions of entry and prize details visit www.craftevents.com.au Online ticket buyers will be automatically entered into the draw.
