“It is with great pleasure that I again support this marvellous independent magazine that showcases the Barrington Coast. A place full of natural wonders and a growing number of adventure activities. It has 200 kilometres of breathtaking coastline and extends into the world heritage mountains of Barrington Tops and beyond. In between, you will experience magnificent lakes, rivers and rolling country valleys, with many towns and villages beckoning you with things to see and do.
Come for a weekend or stay a few weeks – there are attractions to suit everyone. Plan a day trip through the foothills visiting
local cafes, museums, galleries and scenic attractions. Be more adventurous and do a hike to visit waterfalls or lookouts, or cruise down the river in a kayak. If mountain biking is your thing, check out our local forest bike tracks.
Come to Barrington Coast to explore and try new adventures – or just relax and unwind. We are very proud of our local scenic magic and invite you to come and try the experience.”

TANYA THOMPSON
MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
“It brings me great joy, as Nationals MP for Myall Lakes, to welcome you to the 7th edition of Explore Barrington Coast – the Home of Holidays.
I’ve been lucky to call this beautiful holiday destination my home for over 20 years and am delighted to share its wonders with you.
The Barrington Coast offers an abundance of experiences – from the majestic Elenborough Falls to our unique coastline adorned with pristine beaches and scenic trails, there’s something for everyone. You’ll need more than a weekend to uncover all its treasures.
When asked about my favourite things to do in the Barrington Coast, walking along One Mile Beach with my Labrador puppy immediately comes to mind. While it may sound cliché,
witnessing the sunset atop the One Mile sand dune is truly something.
I also love the whale watching platform at Black Head – shhh, it’s a local secret! This publication beautifully captures the essence of our region. I hope you'll thoroughly enjoy it and uncover new delights during your stay. Remember, Life’s Better in the Barrington.”
A message from JOHN
O'NEILL
DESTINATION NORTH COAST CHAIRMAN
“Congratulations to the dedicated team behind the seventh edition of Explore Barrington Coast. We recognise the invaluable role publications like this play in fostering connections among communities and with our visitors.
The Barrington Coast is the southern gateway to Destination North Coast and spans pristine Barrington Tops wilderness and breathtaking coastline.
Its development is being informed by a new, forward-thinking
Destination Management Plan, which focuses on sustainability.
The plan aims to provide more experiences for visitors while ensuring they tread lightly as they traverse this amazing, nature-based destination.
This publication should be a great aid for visitors. Please ensure you allow enough time to experience as much as possible once you're in the region.
And, of course, we will then look forward to welcoming you back.”
"We welcome you to explore the natural beauty of our National Parks. From the sandy beaches and bushwalks of Booti Booti National Park and boating in Myall Lakes National Park to the historic Mountain Maid gold mine in Copeland Tops State Conservation Area and the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park, nature hosts the best stories!" - David Brown, Team Leader Visitor Experience, Hunter Central Coast Branch, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services

PUBLISHER
As a resident of the lower mid north coast, NSW Barrington Coast, I cherish the daily connection and appreciation of our natural environment.
The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is one of my favourite birds, o en heard before being seen. Flying overhead in pairs, trios, or small groups along nature reserve corridors, their loud, distinctive high 'kee-ow, kee-ow' call is unmistakable.
In this issue, we aim to deepen your connection with nature through trip planners designed to immerse, ground and rejuvenate the curious.
"Indulge Your Curiosity" is a special town-bytown destination guide, covering everything from scenic drives, walks, activities and eateries to accommodations and top tips. Cobbled, cra ed in collaboration with and always in constant good humour, we give special thanks to Thomas Davey, – MidCoast Council, a passionate contributor who goes above and beyond!
Within these pages, you'll also find our special tribute to "A Quest for a More Conscious, Connected Community Way of Life" – exploring sustainable horizons and inspiring ecocertified getaways. We meet unique locals creating spaces, places, apps , programs and events for meaningful connections and others supporting youth summits, pathways to learning experiences and regional tertiary education. We meet at the MEC, the centre of entertainment for performing artists and live
shows, and connect with art at Manning Regional Art Gallery. We encourage readers to find their own shade of green and embrace sustainable practices. Re-imagine waste, normalise giving second-hand clothes a second chance to reduce our landfill, and explore your unique clothing style through reviving, reusing, or repairing.
Enjoy our 7th issue and the celebration within its pages of our exceptional Barrington Coast and award-winning, by-the-water venues – plus more in our local “Good to Know” info. We know that nourishing our wellbeing through connecting with nature is essential. Spend time outdoors, whether it's hiking in our backyard of forests and national parks, or gardening in your backyard, or simply taking a walk in the park. Immersing yourself in nature can be incredibly grounding and rejuvenating.
Look up, keep an ear out, and I hope you have the chance to experience and appreciate a Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo or two for yourself. It's a joy worth preserving for our generations to come!

Communities worldwide are reimagining a future that reduces waste and protects the environment. The MidCoast Council (MCC) Waste Management Strategy 2030 emphasises“Reduce, reuse, recycle... re-imagine waste.” This vision aligns with global concerns about plastic waste in oceans and waterways. The MidCoast 2030 Shared Vision, Shared Responsibility document states: “Our natural environment is protected and enhanced while we maintain our growing urban centres and manage our resources wisely.” This is achieved by “sustainably managing our waste through reduction, reuse, recycling, and repurposing” and “proactively managing our resource consumption.”

SEAL ROCKS & MYALL LAKES
TRIP PLANNER
Lighthouse meander: A er breakfast, head into Seal Rocks, stopping at the (only) store for a coffee at Single Fin. Leave your car at the Kinka Road carpark for your walk to Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse. The views just keep getting better, so keep some energy for the steep path up to the cliff top and the lighthouse itself. You can even climb the steps for views once reserved only for the lighthouse keeper himself: 360-degrees across coastal wilderness. Then, head down the cliff track onto Lighthouse Beach, kicking off your shoes to enjoy the sand and saltwater of this wildly remote beach.
Seal Rocks beach challenge: With names like Number One Beach and Treachery Beach, you’ll soon find out why the sandy strips of Seal Rocks offer something different for each visit. Number One Beach is the first beach you’ll see as you drive into Seal Rocks and it’s true to its name: facing north with protected swimming, great surfing and snorkelling, plus sweeping views north to Pacific Palms. Boat Beach is deeper and great for divers and snorkellers. Lighthouse Beach offers 4WD access if you don’t like walking. Treachery Beach, Yagon Beach and Submarine Beach are all wild and remote and give you a good idea of what all Australian beaches looked like to the First Australians and to all those who came here by boat. Take extreme care if you swim at any of these three wild beaches.
Seal Rocks is a quintessential coastal village surrounded by the greens of Myall Lakes National Park and blues of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also famous for Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, one of only two lighthouses in Australia with an external stairway. Myall Lakes National Park is remarkable and renowned for internationally protected wetlands in three coastal lakes.

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse is closed to the public at sunset; the best time for photographs is about one hour before sunset. Seal Rocks village is really busy during peak summer holiday times with limited parking, so plan to visit in nonpeak times. There is no free camping at Seal Rocks and illegal campers (i.e. vans on the streets) will be fined. SMITHS LAKE
Smiths Lake is famous for the saline coastal lagoon that’s intermittently open to the sea. Surrounded by national parks, it’s part of the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park and its waterways and remote beaches of Cellito and Sandbar make it a popular holiday destination. Here, the tall forest grows right down to the water, even in the residential area, and life revolves languidly around the beach and lake.
TRIP PLANNER
Lakeside rambler: A er breakfast at Frothy Coffee Boatshed overlooking the lake, drive to Cellito Beach for a walk along the rainforest boardwalk to check the surf break from the observation deck. Climb the headland for great views or take your dog for a walk along Cellito Beach up to where Smiths Lake enters the sea at Sandbar Beach. Return to Smiths Lake for a hearty lunch at The Good Food Store and take home some award-winning sweet delights from Nadine The Cake Queen. Finish your day ordering your favourite bistro treat for dinner at the Pacific Palms Bowling Club.
Parks: John Debert Reserve; Brambles Reserve; Smiths Lake Nature Reserve; Myall Lakes National Park
Walks: Cellito Rainforest Boardwalk
Picnics: Hearts Point Picnic Area; Neranie Picnic Area; Coomba Park
Dog-friendly: Tarbuck Bay; Cellito Beach; Sandbar Beach
EAT & DRINK NATURE
Frothy Coffee Boatshed – The views across Smiths Lake are unbeatable, so take a breakfast bacon and egg roll out onto the sandy shores or sit at a table on the deck for waffles with strawberries, ice cream and maple syrup. For lunch, try the haloumi salad or panko prawns with chips.
The Good Food Store – Coffee and café favourites for breakfast and lunch, showcasing the talents of Nadine The Cake Queen with baked goodies—sweet and savoury. Enjoy meals on buns or meals in bowls, but leave room for a sweet treat like the caramel mud cupcake. Hot tip: Try the vegan lime blueberry cake with elderberry glaze!
Pacific Palms Bowling Club – The locals go to where the locals know, and that’s here for all their pub favourites: burgers, pizzas, pasta, grilled fish, schnitzels and roasts. Surprise them and order the eggplant parmigiana as you join a game of barefoot bowls.
You can walk your dog on Cellito Beach but keep it on leash while on the rainforest boardwalk and be wary of 4WDs on Sandbar Beach. 4WDs are allowed on Sandbar Beach (with a permit). The Pacific Palms Art Festival and Awards is made possible by the passionate efforts of the Pacific Palms Arts Inc’s President, Cath Bennett, and her dedicated team, alongside the generous sponsorship of local businesses and individuals. Cath, who organises the festival each year, says, "We were delighted to have local ceramics artist and TAFE teacher, Tracie Bertram, as our Youth Art Judge."
The 2024 Youth Art Prize winner, 14-year-old Frankie Leahy, who is currently homeschooling, drew inspiration from nature to create her triptych watercolour artwork, The Lake.
When asked what she loves most about art, Frankie said, “For me, art is freedom. You can paint whatever you wish, so when I’m painting, I can imagine whatever I want. It’s almost like I’m in my own little world. I also love art because I enjoy seeing the results at the end.

'The award is very encouraging, and knowing that people like my artwork is a massive push forward, so I am really grateful, thank you'.

Frankie encourages other young artists to enter the annual Pacific Palms Art Festival, saying, “I definitely think the Art Competition is a great way to show your artwork and to get encouragement to continue.”

Nabiac Bakery – An old-school bakery with a solid claim to fame for their tasty pies, you’ll love the selection of classic sweet and savoury treats This is what country bakeries across Australia used to look like before they got a bit fancy: simple yet satisfying.

WET WEATHER + SUGGESTIONS FOR EVENINGS
Access to Barrington Tops is free. The gravel road across the plateau is suitable for 2WD vehicles except in wet/snowy conditions; 4WD trails off the main road are closed seasonally from June to Sep each year. It’s a wilderness, so take all your own food and water with you, plus a full fuel tank (last chance is Barrington Village General Store). Phone coverage is intermittent, so don’t rely on your phone for directions. Instead, pick up a free map at Gloucester Visitor Information Centre. During snowfall events, the best snow is generally between Honeysuckle Picnic Area and Polblue Swamp, and is accessible by 4WD only. For Aussie Ark tours, August is generally a good time to see Tassie Devil joeys just out of their mums' pouches, but for a cheaper visit, attend the Open Days in January each year; Evenings in the parklands are best enjoyed around a campfire and stargazing

MCelebrating Resilience, Ingenuity and Community Spirit PRESERVING STORIES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME!
idCoast Stories" is a fascinating collection of tales and local resources that capture the unique history of the NSW lower mid north coast, now known as the Barrington Coast.
These stories, intentionally short, factual and o en quirky, provide glimpses into the people, places and events that have shaped the region over time.
One captivating story, ‘’Call Of The Mermaids At Crowdy Head Lighthouse’’, recounts the age-old tale of watery sirens luring sailors and ships onto Mermaid Reef off the coast of Crowdy Head. In response, the government erected a lighthouse in 1878 to warn ships of the dangers.
Another intriguing piece, "Majestic Theatre Gloucester", takes us back to 1926 when Albert Augustus Smith built a bakery and a picture show, which later became the Majestic Theatre. This historic theatre, with seating for 400, opened its doors with the screening of Charlie Chaplin's Gold Rush.
We also learn about the Pindimar Shark Factory, where in 1929, Marine Industries Ltd echoed the slogan: Every shark taken by us lessens the chance of your being taken by a shark. These stories paint a vivid picture of the region's past and its relationship with its natural surroundings.
Other tales include the establishment of the Taree War Memorial Clock, the life of community leader Warren 'George' Perkins, and the adventures of Joseph Daniel Graham with his dinghy. Each story offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of MidCoast history.
The collection also sheds light on lesser-known aspects, such as the Neville Weiley Bridge, which opened in 1958, linking the islands of the Manning River's delta. We also learn about the Darawank Public School, a heritage-listed building that stands as a testament to the region's educational history. From the remnants of the Wingham Wharf, which witnessed nearly 190 years of activity, to the poignant story of the establishment of Purfleet Mission, each entry in "MidCoast Stories" adds depth and richness to the region's narrative. Through these stories, we gain insight into the lives of individuals like Miss Gertrude Richardson, Taree's first female Mayor, and Geoffrey Blake Hammond, a WWI veteran. These stories celebrate the resilience, ingenuity and spirit of the MidCoast community.
"MidCoast Stories" is not just a collection of historical anecdotes; it's a testament to the enduring legacy of the people and places that have shaped MidCoast, NSW Barrington Coast. It's a celebration of community, culture and heritage, preserving the essence of this unique region for generations to come. midcoaststories.com

Community Enhancing
The lower mid north coast of NSW is renowned for its natural beauty. Here, the Barrington Coast covers the regions of Great Lakes, Manning Valley and Gloucester, including mountain tops, vast national parks, 192km of pristine coastline and rich rural land.
However, like many regional areas, it faces challenges in attracting and retaining allied health and other workforce professionals.
In response to this challenge, a group of community representatives launched AH202 – Support when we need it, aiming to attract 20 new allied health professionals to the region within two years. Central to this initiative is the Community Connector Program, designed to address workforce shortages and foster community well-being.
Kate has collaborated with numerous organisations across the Mid Coast to welcome new staff, expanding her role to support professionals in various industries. As a result, the region has seen an influx of nurses, medical staff, senior managers, engineers, electricians, and more.
Kate's extensive network and knowledge, coupled with her excellent communication skills and personable nature, ensure a warm welcome for arriving professionals.
Launched in July 2023, the Community Connector Program appointed Kate Dunn as its first Community Connector. Since then,
Businesses seeking to engage, connect and retain new staff can utilise the Community Connector Program, as can individuals and families relocating to the area. Kate's extensive network and knowledge, coupled with her excellent communication skills and personable nature, ensure a warm welcome for arriving professionals.
Kate Dunn's role as the MidCoast Community Connector exemplifies the region's commitment to creating a more conscious and connected community, enhancing residents and contributing to the growth and prosperity of the MidCoast. communityconnector.com.au
Welcome to Community Connect, where the community thrives by helping one another prosper. Whether individuals are seeking full-time, part-time, or even just an hour of work per week, the site and app are designed to assist them.
A er relocating to a small regional area, Craig realised the importance of community and how everyone rallied to support each other.
Community Connect was born out of this idea. Conversations with many local businesses made it clear that staffing was a major challenge, whether for full-time, part-time, or occasional work. Craig envisioned a platform that could efficiently connect local job seekers with local opportunities, benefitting both parties and the
community as a whole.
It's straightforward: By posting a job on Community Connect, whether it's as simple as sweeping
a showroom floor for an hour or a full-time position, the money earned circulates back into the community, benefiting everyone involved.
How it works: Job seekers can browse available positions based on their availability. Upon finding a suitable job, they complete a profile for
potential employers to review. Employers pay a small fee to connect with applicants, ensuring a fair process for both parties.
The platform doesn't stop there. Employers rate job seekers based on punctuality, attitude and cleanliness. Those with outstanding performance receive certificates of achievement, recognising their contributions to the community.
Join in connecting local people with local jobs and supporting the community. Together, a difference can be made!

in Pink Pretty
Every October, Forster Tuncurry Turns Pink for a cause.
When you think of the stunning twin towns of Forster-Tuncurry on the Barrington Coast, what colours come to mind? The deep blue of our gorgeous sealife-filled waterways?
The rich green of our bushland and walking trails, the pure white of our award-winning beaches, or the golden hues of our endless romantic sunsets?
It’s most likely all those things. But what if we said we were making pink one of the most important colours in our community?
-andChat BRAINSTORM
Looking for a quiet space to focus or prefer to chat and brainstorm with others?
New to Barrington Coast, Coastal Workspace is the perfect spot to work in Forster-Tuncurry. Situated by the sea, the workspace offers a fantastic environment where you can enjoy beach vibes while getting your work done. Whether you need a quiet spot to focus or prefer to interact with others, the thoughtfully designed spaces ensure comfort and ease while you work.
If you're on holiday and need to sneak in a few hours of work, Coastal Workspace is the perfect solution. It's laid-back, just like the rest of the town, providing a great opportunity to meet both locals and other travellers. It's the place to blend work with holiday fun! coastalworkspace.com.au
Pink Up Forster Tuncurry is part of the wider Pink Up Your Town initiative, a community of communities if you will, formed by the McGrath Foundation to engage their own local people to get behind the cause. It works by local businesses and local people getting involved and holding their own fundraising events. The common theme? Pink, of course. It might be a pink High Tea, a golf day where everyone wears pink, a bakery selling pink iced cupcakes
for the month, or in the case of the Pink Up Forster-Tuncurry committee, a fabulous Pink cocktail party. The money we raise goes towards funding breast care nurses in our region. For those who can’t fundraise, just dressing up their home, car or business in pink will help.
So, if you’ve ever wanted to experience the rich colour tapestry of Forster Tuncurry, now you can do it every October with a cocktail and a tinge of Pink.

Inspiring Journey Touches Hearts of Youth
"Luminosity challenges today’s generation to become the leaders of tomorrow and dares young people to overcome adversity and reach for their goals."
Savanah Bell, a 17-year-old Year 12 student at Chatham High School, shares her transformative experiences with Luminosity. "In 2022, I had the opportunity to attend Luminosity with my school," she recounts. Luminosity’s two-day program offers the chance to meet motivational speakers and other students. Unlike other programs, speakers are accessible during breaks, allowing for deeper conversations.
"One seminar that really touched me featured speakers Yvonne and Peter Halas, a couple who survived the Holocaust and founded the swimwear brand Seafolly," Savanah recalls. "Hearing their story about their hardships and how they survived and went on to create something amazing was incredible."
Savanah believes that Luminosity is a unique opportunity and learning experience for students at Chatham High School. "Being an underprivileged school, events like this can be difficult money-wise as not a lot of students can afford it," she explains. "However, this program is filled with lessons that you will not forget and could potentially change your life or mindset."
Since 2019, Chatham High School has sent over 100 students to the Luminosity Youth Summit. "Luminosity challenges today’s generation to become the leaders of tomorrow and dares young people to overcome adversity and reach for their goals," she notes.
Through their event, 'Purpose + Possibility,' students experience speakers like Layne
