ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, the Gathangspeaking people, and pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who now reside in the MidCoast Council area. We extend our respect to elders past and present, and to all future cultural knowledge holders.
THANK YOU FROM THE PUBLISHER
As a resident of the Barrington Coast, I truly love sharing the distinct natural beauty with visitors, friends and family. In particular, winter is my favourite time for visitors and celebrations, capturing special memories on our stunning crystal-clear waterways and dolphin watching from a boat or from the beach!
Our local businesses, who rely on the visitor economy, continue to have our wholehearted support as we work together in our 6th edition of Explore Barrington Coast – The Home of Holidays publication. We’re
very fortunate to work with a collective of dedicated business operators, entrepreneurs, passionate local and state government employees who go above and beyond to support the visitor economy. And in this issue we’re showcasing those businesses, among them a number of Finalists in the recent 2023 North Coast Tourism Awards, recognised for their outstanding contributions. It is also with some pride that we share the exciting news that, in those same awards, the Barrington Coast Publishing team was also a Finalist in the Excellence in

"We welcome you to explore the natural beauty of our National Parks. From the sandy beaches and bushwalks of Booti Booti National Park and boating in Myall Lakes National Park to the historic Mountain Maid gold mine in Copeland Tops State Conservation Area and the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park, nature hosts the best stories!"

“I am pleased to welcome visitors to the MidCoast region of New South Wales, also known as the Barrington Coast, which receives over 4.5 million visitors each year.
“During the summer months, the population swells with tourists coming to enjoy our beaches, lakes and lagoons as well as cultural and adventure attractions. In 2020/21, tourism here generated $222 million for the local economy and employed over 2,200 people.
“Our economic strategy aims to strengthen the appeal of the area and support the sustainable growth of the visitor economy, and it is
important that we offer a variety of events and experiences throughout the year, and throughout the region, to provide balance in our tourist activities.
“Currently, we are exploring ways to bring more visitors to our region during the “off-season” – to experience our local Aboriginal heritage and other arts and culture, sports, foodie/culinary offerings and adventure tourism. We have set our sights on strengthening our visitor economy, which will in turn have long-term economic and lifestyle benefits for our entire community.”
“It gives me great pleasure, as the newly elected Nationals MP for Myall Lakes, to welcome you to this 6th edition of Explore Barrington Coast – The Home of Holidays.
“Although born in Tenterfield, NSW and raised in Port Macquarie, I moved to Forster a er I finished high school, working in an award-winning seafood business and in real estate. I am very proud to say I now live in Black Head and have called this region home for more than 20 years. Recently, I was asked what I love most
about our region, and I replied: “What’s not to love?” From our gorgeous coastline to the beautiful hinterland, it’s easy to see why so many people visit –and why so many want to come and live!
"Congratulations to El and Christine for putting together this magnificent publication. I don’t think you could find a better way of showcasing our region. I know that you, like me, will thoroughly enjoy this latest edition of Explore Barrington Coast – The Home of Holidays!"

HELLO … AND WELCOME
The recent revival of the Gathang language of the custodians of the MidCoast land – the Birrbay (Biripi), Guringay (Gringai) and Warrimay (Worimi) people – has ignited a passionate sharing of insights with the broader MidCoast community through language, stories and art. In 2010, the Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative at Nambucca Heads published a Gathang dictionary – “A Grammar and Dictionary of Gathang” – of over 1000 words, opening an exciting door that reconnects the ancient past to future generations.

Barrington Coast Publishing
"Excellence in Tourism Services" category at the 2023 North Coast Tourism Awards.
In 2018 we published the first issue of Explore Barrington Coast – The Home of Holidays. As a fledgling print magazine venture, conceived by Kim and Rob Jeffress, our objective was to raise the profile of this exceptional region and provide a showcase guide for visitors, with the support of a small number of equally enthusiastic local businesses and individuals. We opened issue 01 with a heartfelt endorsement for our region from Stephen Bromhead, stalwart and active community member and MP for Myall Lakes in the New South Wales Parliament since 2011. Through issue 02 and beyond, he waxed lyrical about his home and its people, proudly promoting the region, and encouraging visitors to experience everything it has to offer. Sadly, Stephen passed away in March 2023 and the team at Barrington Coast Publishing expresses its profound condolences to his family, friends and the wider community of which he was such a passionate and committed member. He will be missed. Since issue 01, Explore Barrington Coast –The Home of Holidays has grown organically – in size, content and reputation – attracting
more and more stakeholders and supporters, and spreading its reach across every town and village in the region. In this issue, we proudly reciprocate that burgeoning wide support with our special ode to the Barrington Coast – the 62-page “A-Z of The Barrington Coast” – a town-by-town destination guide covering everything from activities and eateries to accommodation and unique stories.
Within these pages you’ll also find our special 24-page guide to “Glamping, Camping and Caravanning on the Barrington Coast” – a timely inclusion with latest figures from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CCIA) showing 820,000 registered caravans and RVs in the country, and Tourism Research Australia reporting the national rate for caravan, camping and cabin occupancy at 65% in April 2023.
Enjoy our 6th annual issue … and the celebration within its pages of our exceptional Barrington Coast!

Some thingsmoney just can’t buy!
The friendly township of Gloucester is located just an hour’s drive from the coast, where the Barrington, Gloucester and Avon Rivers meet. Renowned as the gateway to the spectacular wilderness that is the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops, Gloucester is nestled in a lush valley of thriving farmlands and endless possibilities for adventure.
hile most rural locales have their share of folklore and legends, this area scooped the pool with the infamous bushranger, Thunderbolt. Fred Ward, dubbed Captain Thunderbolt by the media at the time of his infamy, was born in 1835, and had a legendary career involving more than 30 mail and 16 hotel robberies, 80 horse the s, an abduction and five shootings! A fine horseman, he was o en better mounted than the police, eluding them for years. Well regarded by the locals for his Robin Hood-like appeal, he was o en forewarned when police were nearby, allowing him to make his escape. Thunderbolt was eventually shot and killed in Uralla in 1870, but the legend remains entrenched in the region. Walking through the streets of Gloucester, building facades provide a sense of Thunderbolt’s time, and driving or hiking up though Copeland and the Barrington Tops it is entirely possible to imagine how he easily hid from the law here. Now the region is dotted with myriad accommodation options; charming cottages, cabins on the edge of the forest, farm stays, and accommodation in town
Wthat rivals big city hotels for comfort. There’s plenty to experience; local markets, cellar doors, kayaking on crystal-clear rivers, and you can even pan for gold.
Enjoy your food? Want to try some local produce? Visit the local markets for a selection of locally grown goods and try our many cafes and restaurants for a brunch, lunch and in-between coffee. Wander past the bakeries and take something home for later. Or stop right outside the store and open the box filled with your freshly made, delicious croissant,
There are some things you just can’t buy, in Gloucester. Friendly locals ready to share a story, provide directions or simply smile as you wander by, crisp mountain air, crystal clear rivers, night skies so clear you can recognise the constellations without a telescope, and the overwhelming feeling that … you might just come back.

I picked up the new VZ4800 Off-Road Hybrid Caravan from EzyTrails for a photo shoot and, with my family, headed inland to The Steps for a few days of adventure. We arrived at midday on a Friday and setup in Campzone 2, right on the edge of the Barrington River - an ideal location for my photography and perfect for the kids to swim and explore the rapids on inflatable ra s. Kayla and Cody loved all the tracks to explore on their mountain bikes and the pump track kept them focused and entertained for hours.
At night, we’d sit around the campfire and talk about our favourite part of the day, toasting marshmallows and enjoying the clear nights with the Milky Way above. The Steps is a fantastic place to camp, the owners are very accommodating and friendly and with heaps of activities on offer, and plenty of wildlife, it’s a great place to unwind.

As the managing director of Tuncurry based Hunter East Coast (HEC) 4 x 4, Billy is the go-to for locals and visitors who want to know where and how to explore this slice of heaven on four wheels. “There are plenty of nice trips that come to mind, ranging in difficulty from Toyota Prius to Nissan Patrol,” says Billy.
“Definitely the most memorable is Whoota Whoota Lookout, especially on a clear day, and it’s just a 30-minute drive from Forster. This is an outing you can take in a standard road car too. The views are breathtaking, so pack the whole family and a picnic and, on your way back down, you can continue your adventure and see the biggest tree in NSW, roughly 15 minutes past Bungwahl service station.
“Next on my list would be a day on Tuncurry Beach, also called Nine Mile Beach. But remember, you share this beach with horses, dogs and people. You will need a vehicle
permit from the visitor information centre for these drives and a 4WD is a must. It’s also very handy to have a set of tyre deflators, sand tracks and a compressor to pump your tyres back up to return to the road. These can be purchased from our store in Manning Street Tuncurry. My recommended beach tyre pressure is 15-18 PSI as it can get quite so around there. If you do happen to get stuck, recovery will cost around $250, depending on location. Tuncurry beach is pet friendly so take the pooch with you and, a er your adventure, visit Tuncurry Dog Wash (located next to our shop) for a clean-up.
“Avid and experienced 4WD enthusiasts can try Possum Brush for a real challenge. You will need a winch, if travelling solo, and always let someone know where you're heading beforehand. Some tracks are novice, but others can sneak up quickly. If it has been raining, avoid the area.
“A day (or overnight) trip to the Barrington Tops, through the beautiful town of Gloucester,
is unforgettable. It’s around 60 minutes’ drive from Gloucester to the National Park entrance where the road becomes graded gravel. Keep in mind the seasonal closures of the 4WD side trails. Plan ahead to get the most out of this trip. It’s tropical in summer and snows in winter so check weather reports before you set out. You will need a 4WD in winter, but most cars will be fine at other times.”
“Oh, and please remember to always clean up your rubbish so we can keep enjoying these beautiful places for years to come. Safe travels, hope to see you in store soon.”

PRIZE
The annual Pacific Palms Art Festival awards an Overall Youth Winner each June, with the Major Prize winner receiving $100 prize money, courtesy of Pacific Palms Real Estate, and their winning work showcased for 12 months in the award-winning outdoor street art space at One Square Gallery at Blueys Motel, in collaboration with Barrington Coast Publishing.
2023 Youth Art Prize winner, 15-year-old Nelleke O’Connell, attends Wingham High School and drew on her own experiences to create her work, “Self-Conscious” in pen and pencil.
“I’ve always enjoyed art for as long as I can remember,” Nelleke says. “As I’ve gotten older, I found that sometimes words can’t
help me express how I feel, which frustrates me. Art has always been a way to release those frustrations.
“’Self-Conscious’ was created out of one of those feelings … it was inspired by how I felt that people were always looking at me and analysing how I appeared and acted. I tried to put that into this piece, with the empty stare of the girls and unusual lighting. I wanted to express my discomfort and anxiety through the rough unblended lines of colourless pencil.”
The Pacific Palms Art Festival and Awards is made possible by the tireless, and passionate, efforts of the Pacific Palms Arts Inc’s Cath Bennett and her team and the generous sponsorship of both local businesses and individuals.

Mya Lakes
Seal Rocks and Famous FO R
Seal Rocks and Myall Lakes are not just famous, they’re icons of the Barrington Coast with superb beaches, lakes and headlands! Seal Rocks is a quintessential coastal village surrounded by the greens of Myall Lakes National Park and blues of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also famous for Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, one of only two lighthouses in Australia with an external stairway. And Myall Lakes National Park is renowned for its internationally protected wetlands in three coast lakes.
TRY THESE GREAT DAY TRIPS
Lighthouse meander: A er breakfast, head into Seal Rocks, stopping at the Bungwahl store, close to the turn off, for supplies and a coffee at Chaos Café or try a coffee at Single Fin, a retro caravan above Boat Beach. Leave your car at the Kinka Road carpark for your walk to Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse – the views get better and better so keep some energy for the steep path up to the cliff top and the lighthouse itself. You can even climb the steps for views once reserved only for the lighthouse keeper himself, 360-degrees across coastal wilderness. Head down the cliff track onto Lighthouse Beach, kicking off your shoes to enjoy the sand and saltwater of this wildly remote beach.
Seal Rocks beach challenge: With names like Number One Beach and Treachery Beach, you’ll soon find out why the sandy strips of Seal Rocks offer something different at each visit. Number One Beach is the first beach you’ll see as you drive into Seal Rocks and it’s true to its name: facing north with protected swimming, great surfing and snorkelling plus sweeping views north to Pacific Palms; Boat Beach is deeper and great for divers and snorkellers; Lighthouse Beach offers 4WD access if you don’t like walking; Treachery Beach, Yagon Beach and Submarine Beach are all wild and remote and give you a good idea of what all Australian beaches looked like to the First Australians and to all those who came here by boat. Take extreme care if you swim at any of these three beaches.

There is no free camping at Seal Rocks and illegal campers (ie. on the streets) will be fined. During northeasterly winds or red weed, try Lighthouse Beach as an alternative to Number One Beach, or head to Neranie on Myall Lake. If you spot a dog pooping while their owner is distracted by a spectacular view or casual conversation, call out with a friendly "COOEE" to alert them, so they can promptly pooper scoop and keep our beaches and reserves clean!
