SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Discover our stories at Dungog Museum, Clarence Town & District Historical Museum, Paterson Court House Museum, Paterson Rail Motor Museum, Gresford Heritage Museum and historic Tocal Homestead in Paterson, now regarded as one of the foremost agricultural institutions in Australia and home to remnants of indigenous life including rubbing stones and a scar tree.
Before the appearance of the first European settlers, Dungog Shire’s traditional Aboriginal landowners had lived unimpeded by outsiders for 40,000 years.
The Williams, Paterson and Allyn Rivers were the drawcards for these newcomers who arrived here, predominantly, from England, Scotland and Wales, in the early 1800s. The land was fertile, ideal for intensive farming, and the rivers provided an essential trade route for transporting the Shire’s valuable commodities like timber, wheat, sheep and cattle to Newcastle and Sydney. Significantly, the Shire’s green valleys, forests and mountains had their own appeal, reminiscent of the home countries of these new settlers.
With this backdrop, today’s Dungog Shire reflects both the heritage and unspoiled beauty of the ancestral lands nurtured by the Gringai, the Wonnarua the Worimi Aboriginal nations, and the influence of 19th Century European culture and industry.
UNIQUELY DUNGOG SHIRE
A walk through the iconic, ancient World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforests will evoke a true sense of country and remind you of the sacred places tended by the traditional owners of the land.
The totem poles at the Visitor Information Centre in Dungog town were designed and painted by Les Elvin, an artist and teacher who lived in Cessnock NSW and whose art has been recognised and sold internationally. A descendant of the Gringai/ Wonnarua people of the Upper Hunter region in eastern NSW, Les encouraged a group of Aboriginal Heritage children from the Dungog LGA, who didn’t even know they had Aboriginal Heritage, to paint with him – the lower handprints are those of the children and the upper handprints of Elders, the totem connecting both. Les Elvin was named Australian Aboriginal Artist of the Year during NAIDOC North West – 2008.
Hop on two-wheels for a few hours and explore Dungog beyond the town centre. Speedy Cycles hires MTBs, road bikes and town cruisers so you can see the Shire up-close-and-personal – riding on our scenic country roads and through picturesque and expansive Dungog Common. speedycycles.com.au
You’ll spot sculptures across the town and in Dungog Common, donated by Sculpture on the Farm, a local art festival held every two years. Look out for ‘Kelpie’ by Jimmy Rix, ‘Nothin’ but Sky’ by Braddon Snape, ‘Theatre of the Shadow’ by Peter Tilley, and ‘Sowelu Two’ by Jen Mallinson.
Gallery on Dowling prides itself on stocking artworks that celebrate the landscape. Exhibiting local artists Jeanne Harrison and Helene Leane specialise in painting and printmaking. Discover beautiful artworks that capture the essence and wonder of the environment.

Count the Pelican Sculptures in Paterson, the creations of Bill Cummins. You will find them in the most unusual places!
See remnants of logging’s past at the open-air Logging Museum on the way to Telegherry Forest Rest Area, at the intersection of Wangat and Middle Ridge Roads.

Have you ever been to a cattle sale? Head to the Dungog Sale yards for the monthly store sales – plenty of excitement, fasttalking auctioneers and friendly local producers plus, of course, a great cup of tea. There is also a Produce and poultry sale once a month, something the kids will love! dillonandsons.com.au/cattle-sales/store-cattle-sales
Road tripping with the pooch? Dungog Shire is Fido-friendly with activities such as walking off leash (for obedient dogs) at Dungog Common. Dogs are also welcome to camp with you at many places including in the Chichester State Forest – but please be mindful of the natural flora and fauna. Many of our cafes and pubs offer outdoor dining and are pet-friendly – always ask first – and please remember to pick up after Fido! If you bring your pony, follow the trails and be aware of weather conditions, walkers, runners and cyclists.
