PARKS AND WILDLIFE Lend a hand, make a difference Volunteering can help you feel like you are making a difference. It gives you a sense of pride, purpose, meaning and can help build self-confidence and resilience as well as provide a natural sense of accomplishment. Volunteering at an Essex Country Park is good for your mental health and it’s a great way to relax and get close to nature along with increasing knowledge and skills. You’ll meet new people who may have similar interests as yourself and you’ll make new friends while doing something beneficial, whether surveying wildflower meadows or planting trees and hedgerows to benefit both wildlife and preserve nature for future generations. Volunteering can also be an introduction to a new career or a hobby.
Take the first step First, think how many hours you can offer, find out if any training’s provided and whether there’s any travel requirements. Many Essex Country Park staff were first volunteers. Six years ago June Jackson, Weald Country Park manager, changed career. After volunteering and working with her local council conservation team June joined Essex County Council to work at Weald and never looked back. Matt Smith enjoyed his volunteering experience so much he joined Essex County Council as a park ranger at Cudmore Grove Country Park. Matt loves to work outdoors and with nature, he especially enjoys working with trees and undertaking coppice work along with woodland management. Interested in volunteering with Essex Country Parks? Then email explore.essex@essex.gov.uk. If you need inspiration Essex County Council has many volunteering opportunities: www.volunteeressex.org There’s also the Essex Forest Initiative which is planting trees to help and protect the environment. Hedgehogs and hibernation As the days shorten and the nights draw in, many animals are gathering and storing food ready for the lean winter months, and some are preparing to hibernate.
To prepare for hibernation, hedgehogs will build up their fat reserves by eating as many worms, beetles and caterpillars as they can find. They might build their own shelter from materials such as fallen leaves and sticks, however they also like to make a home under stacks of logs and garden sheds. Hedgehogs will hibernate any time from October to April, depending on how mild the weather is.
I
n the UK the only mammals to truly hibernate are hedgehogs, dormice and bats. The reason these animals hibernate is to survive for long periods of time without food which may become scarce during certain times of year. They enter a sleep like state, by slowing their heart rate and breathing and lowering their body temperature and metabolism. but they sometimes wake to look for food and go the toilet.
You can help hedgehogs this winter by following these top tips: Put out a shallow dish of fresh water and meat, such as cat or dog food, regularly. Make a hedgehog home to provide a safe hibernation site. Make sure hedgehogs have easy access to your garden by leaving 13cm x 13cm gaps in your hedges or fencing. Keep a corner of your garden wild to offer shelter and avoid using pesticides such as slug pellets. Remember to check any bonfires and collected piles of leaves for hedgehogs before lighting or disposing of them. Read more: www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Cressing Temple Barns: Where history comes alive
Recently, graves belonging to Knights Templars were discovered in Staffordshire, but did you know that Cressing Temple Barns has a rich ancient history as it was a large farmstead built by the Knights Templar?
18
|
A UT UM N/ WINTER
2023
S
ituated just outside of the market town of Braintree, Cressing Temple Barns was built in the 13th century. Its Barley and Wheat barns - which are Grade I listed - are now some of the oldest timber barns in the country and are some of the few surviving Templar buildings in England.
ESSEX CULTURE
The Granary, another Grade I listed timber framed building, was built just after 1575 and is the largest granary in Essex. This, and the other 16th and 18th century buildings on the site, offer a fascinating insight into the history and changing life of the Essex countryside over the last 800 years. Nowadays, Cressing Temple Barns is regularly used for events and has become a popular visitor destination. While many enjoy the barns themselves, the Tudor Walled Garden offers a faithful recreation of a manor house garden of the time. Built during the reign of Elizabeth I in the 15th and 16th century, the Tudor Walled Garden would have originally been a pleasure garden for the occupiers of the Tudor Great House which once stood on the site. However, approximately 100 years later a Dutch merchant who came into ownership of Cressing Temple demolished the Great House. He had little use for it but he kept the garden and turned it into into a kitchen garden for the farmhouse, which is still on the site to this day. Unfortunately, only the Tudor wall remains of the original garden today, but the present layout is a faithful recreation of a manor house garden of the time. In fact, manuscripts from the 15th and 16th century were used to design the garden which contains elements you would have seen hundreds of years ago. Take a stroll around the garden and you’re likely to spot medicinal herbs, along with flowers, vegetables and fruit. Also situated on Cressing site is the Jubilee Orchard, which was planted in 1993 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 40th jubilee, and which features nine varieties of apple, with six originating from Essex. The ever popular annual Apple Day - which is held in October by the voluntary group, The Friends of Cressing Temple - sees visitors from all over the county attending and buying these native apple varieties. The Apple Day also features bee keeping and the honey made onsite, Medieval re-enactments, plant sales, willow craft workshops, apple juicing with a traditional press, and the accompanying cider, as well as the opportunity for visitors to learn how to care for their own fruit trees. Discover more and enjoy the Tiptree Tea Rooms onsite, visit: www.explore-essex.com/cressing-temple-barns
Did you know that Cressing Temple Barns reportedly has some spooky spectors? There are allegedly five ghosts that haunt Cressing Tempe Barns. There’s an injured Roman soldier with a head wound that appears in the fields next to the barns, a knight who – according to legend – is buried somewhere on the site, the spirit of a cavalier, an ostler (a groom or stable hand) who was killed in a tragic accident and the footsteps of an unidentified man who lost his partner “in a fire on the estate hundreds of years ago”.

Lord Petre
B
orn in 1540 William Byrd was an English Renaissance composer. Considered to be one of the greatest of his time - due to the influence he had on composers in England and Europe - William died in 1623 in Stondon Massey, a village he had lived in for over 25 years. As a non-conformist (or recusant) Catholic - Byrd adhered to the Roman Catholic faith after the English Reformation - he refused to attend Church of England services. It was while living in Stondon Massey that he composed two books of illegal Latin religious music known as the ‘Gradualia’. The first set of the ‘Gradualia’ in 1605 was dedicated to the Earl of Northampton and the second set dated 1607 was dedicated to Byrd’s great friend and patron, Lord Petre of Writtle, who lived nearby at Ingatestone Hall. A 1608 household inventory stated that the Petre family possessed “two sets of Mr.Byrd’s books intituled Gradualia, the first and the second set”, along with other books containing “songs” written by the composer. It is believed that Byrd would have tried out his pieces at Ingatestone Hall prior to publication.
Fortunately, two books from the household of John, 1st Baron Petre - both he and his family were recusants feature music by Byrd and date from around 1590. Both books are at the Essex Record Office.
While these are ‘part books’, as they only show one part of the composition, it does include Byrd’s motet, which is a short piece of sacred choral music, dating from 1589. Ne irascaris Domine, its Latin title means ‘Be not angry O Lord’, was part of Cantiones Sacrae I or Sacred Songs I. The music portrays a dark time for English Catholics. Following the Spanish Armada in 1588, many Catholics like Byrd were persecuted for their faith. Despite this, Byrd successfully managed to navigate being a Catholic in late Elizabethan and early Stuart England. In 1623, Byrd died at the age of 82-years-old in Stondon Massey and left a remarkable musical legacy which lives on and is still enjoyed to this day by composers, musicians and audiences alike. ESSEX CULTURE
Since launching in December 2021, the Arts and Cultural Fund has funded and supported a wide range of projects throughout the county, from visual arts to theatre performances and much more. Here we find out about what projects have taken place and what Essex residents can look forward to. “The £1 million fund over five years was set up as part of Essex County Council’s commitment to supporting the arts and culture sector,” says Andrew Ward, Cultural Development Lead. “Since its launch we’ve funded and supported over 60 projects and have worked with a number of organisations, community groups and creative practitioners. “With each project, as is with the arts more generally, the creative supply chain has seen a significant number of freelancers, participants and residents benefit from our support.” During the past two years, Essex residents have enjoyed a range of free and low-cost family friendly arts and cultural activities throughout the county, such as storytelling workshops, food, music and film festivals, theatre performances, walking trails, exhibitions and immersive installations along with much more. Recently in Basildon, Elevator Arts CIC worked with Kool Karers on ‘Hidden Voices’, a celebration of the experience of young carers which concluded with a public exhibition at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon to mark national carers week.
Other projects included Chelmsford Community Radio launching its first radio drama festival; artist Gemma Garwood created a new earthwork and walking trail called ‘The Deepenings’ at Cudmore Grove Country Park; and in Jaywick Sands artist duo, INSTAR, created an immersive light installation. Finally, on Canvey Island the international photography collective, Magnum Photos, commissioned a photographer to explore the power of visual storytelling through several public workshops. Andrew added: “We’re proud of the projects we’ve funded and the range of artist and community groups we’ve supported over the years. We’re also delighted at how the Arts and Cultural Fund has brought residents and communities together. “Whether it is through music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literature, the combined arts, festivals, carnivals and museums, there really is something for everyone to enjoy and they’ll be more fantastic low-cost and free events coming in 2024.”
Further projects that took place during the summer included Korean artist duo, Breakwater, leading a guided sensory walk at Canvey Wick Nature Reserve as part of Estuary Festival, while Harlow Art Trust’s 70th anniversary saw over twenty local schools and youth groups work with artists on ‘Our Community, Our Environment’ which culminated in an exhibition at the town’s Gibberd Gallery.

A poem for Essex
Proudly supported by the Arts and Cultural Fund, ‘Modern Mythologies’ showcases the spirit of Essex through a poetic tapestry painted across its scenic grassy expanses.
Image: Walter and Zoniel
E
arlier this year, artists Walter and Zoniel invited Essex residents to submit their memories, personal tales and deep-rooted connections to help form a poetic tapestry across the county. Drawing inspiration from these stories and sentiments, the poem was planned to intertwine the lives, experiences and dreams of those who call Essex home, a place of work, or who share a profound connection with it.
In September Walter and Zoniel installed the temporary artwork across five green spaces and it is now available for communities to enjoy. Stretching across the county - from the Medieval town of Saffron Waldon in the north west to the heritage coastal site of Jaywick Martello Tower in the north east, along with Thorndon South Country Park in Brentwood to the Thames Estuary at Hadleigh Country Park and the west coast at Southend-onSea - residents are encouraged to experience this multi-site artwork and reflect on what these places and spaces mean to them.
Locations include:
Zoniel said: “We believe that art should be a shared experience, reflecting the collective soul of a community. Through this poetic treasure hunt, we hope to engage people in a profound way, encouraging them to rediscover their connections to Essex.”
You might be interested to know that the paint used is a water-based, biodegradable and environmentally friendly product that is non-harmful to humans, animals and the environment.

‘Essex Girls’ movie shortlisted for award
Ashlee (Corinna Brown) and Bisola (Busayo Ige)
A new film challenging the Essex girl stereotype, and proudly supported by the ECC Arts and Cultural Fund, has been shortlisted for this year’s BFI Film Festival in London.
N
ominated for the Best Short Film award, ‘Essex Girls’ is a coming-of-age drama based on the experiences of writer and actor Busayo Ige’s teenage years growing up as a young Black woman in Benfleet. Directed by Yero Timi-Biu and filmed in Southend-on-Sea, ‘Essex Girls’ is a comedy-drama which explores Black British girlhood and female friendships in 2009 Essex and follows the lead character ‘Bisola’, played by Busayo Ige. Angela Moneke, ‘Essex Girls’ producer commented: “We’re thrilled that ‘Essex Girls’ has been recognised by the London Film Festival. With this film we were keen to playfully challenge notions of who could fit into the ‘Essex Girl’ trope. We rarely dissect Blackness outside London onscreen and
there’s an intimacy to stories about identity that we find in these regional spaces. “The film is vital as a light-hearted, nostalgic ode to noughties Black British girlhood which explores female friendships with wit and warmth. It’s been fantastic to see the film resonate with audiences and we look forward to bringing it to an even bigger platform through the London Film Festival.”
The production was financed by BFI Network, Surgent Studios, Screen South and Fully Focused and received funding from the Arts and Cultural Fund and the National Lottery. Images courtesy of TAPE COLLECTIVE LTD 2022.

One of the true classics of the genre, The Shining, chilling and claustrophobic, is regarded as one of Stephen King’s masterpieces and a must-read for any fans of the film. Danny is only five-years-old, but when his father becomes caretake of the remote Overlook Hotel his visions grow out of control, and somehow the evil force in the hotel is also beginning to shine...
My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. In heaven Susie watches as her family are torn apart by grief. But Susie comes to realise that even in death, life is not quite out of reach. An instant classic when it was first published in 2002, this novel inspired the film starring Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz.

Apple and Blackberry Crumble Ingredients 150g plain flour 110g margarine 50g quick porridge oats 1 tablespoon sugar Pinch of sea salt 3 Bramley apples Butter 300g fresh blackberries 2 tablespoons Tiptree Crab Apple Jelly 1 tablespoon flaked almonds Serve with fresh double cream. Method Set the oven to warm up at 175 fan. Put the flour, margarine and a pinch of salt in the basin and crumble to a breadcrumb consistency. Stir in the oats and sugar.
Put jelly in a saucepan and beat a little to break the set, then add blackberries (save three), simmer until just cooked so they keep their shape. Drain the blackberries and save any juice.
Spread on a cold baking sheet and put in the oven for 12 to 14 minutes approximately or until golden brown.
Place the blackberries in an oven proof dish, cover with apples then top with crumble and decorate with almonds and the saved blackberries.
Peel, core and slice apples and, if necessary, add water to stop them going brown.
Serve with double cream or custard or mix a little cream into the blackberry juice to create a delicious rich sauce.
Drain the apples and place in a saucepan with a knob of butter, cook slowly until just soft.

6. Cut 12 Oreos, or similar sized biscuits, in half using a sharp serrated knife. Place an Oreo half on each side of the piped butter cream swirl, securing them by tucking them into the butter cream. In between the two Oreo wings, add buttons or small marshmallows for eyes. If you don’t have time to ice your cakes, simply cut a bat or pumpkin stencil, place it over your cupcake and sprinkle over the icing sugar, then remove the stencil to reveal your design.

Simple scary leaves
With beautiful woodland walks to be had in the autumn, there are many large leaves to find. Pick a few up and head home to paint some spooky designs. If you want to hang your designs, you’ll need leaves with stems on. Make sure your leaves are nice and dry. Give the leaves a good coating of white or orange paint, allow to dry and paint the other side. Apply a second coat if needed. Once dry, use black paint or a black pen to draw a ghostly face or some pumpkin features.
Tie some string to the stem and hang outside or wherever you like. You can also stick your leaves on some paper to create a spooky picture.

DAY’S OUT
Exhibitions in Essex
Get a new perspective this season with these exhibits in Colchester and Southend-on-Sea. The Essex Way and Essex Man, Michael Landy Firstsite, Colchester
Michael Landy, ‘The Essex Way’ exhibition Image: Richard Ivey
Storm Warning: What does climate change mean for coastal communities? Focal Point Gallery and Big Screen Southend
‘The Essex Way’ and ‘Essex Man’ were both created and installed as part of Firstsite’s exhibition, ‘Michael Landy’s Welcome to Essex’ in 2021 and, due to their popularity, continue to be presented at the gallery. These artworks are currently scheduled to leave Firstsite in 2024, so be sure to visit before the end of the year to experience these immense works up close.
Storm Warning is a collaboration between Focal Point Gallery, Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, Penzance. They are seeking to raise awareness of the impact of climate change on coastal communities in south Essex and Mount’s Bay, Cornwall, through new and innovative artworks.
British artist Michael Landy is interested in the recent history of Essex and how the county has been stereotyped by the media over the past thirty years. The ‘Essex Man,’ is a term coined by historian and journalist Simon Heffer (himself hailing from Essex) in a 1990 Sunday Telegraph article entitled ‘Mrs. Thatcher’s Bruiser’.
Katharine Stout, Director of Focal Point Gallery, said: “The artists featured in this exhibition take a range of approaches, working with ecologists, activists, citizen scientists, marine biologists and those working in the fishing industry. The resulting works range from the playful and immersive to projects which foreground the role artists can play as activists and strategists.
‘Michael Landy: The Essex Way’, is a large-scale collage, created by the artist, inspired by walks he has taken throughout Essex with Southend based artist and activist Elsa James, writer and broadcaster Gillian Darley, and Professor Pam Cox, Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Essex.
“We hope this exhibition will not just show the impact of the climate crisis on our locations but also highlight the change we can each make as individuals.”
