Fiji offers the perfect backdrop for many celebrations of love including proposals, honeymoon and renewal of vows. Tourism is Fiji’s top revenue earner, a gold mine we must all continue to nurture and grow. Notably, Fiji is beautiful, yet small; therefore building niche industries such as weddings is good news for our local economies as tourism touches everyone from the grassroots upward. On March 19th and 20th 2016, Tourism Fiji will hold its first-ever weddings expo, free to the public, at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort & Spa on Yanuca Island, along Viti Levu’s coral coast. If you’re in Fiji, please visit the expo. With over 4,000 square miles of coral reef, Fiji offers supreme marine biodiversity; a true delight for divers from learner to experienced. Renowned as “The Soft Coral Capital of the World” and home to several notable reefs, Fiji excels when it comes to remarkable encounters with marine life. DIVE IN TO W

ith Rainbow Reef and Vuna Reef just a short boat ride away, Paradise Taveuni offers some of the best diving in the world. Fiji, known for being the “Soft Coral Capital of the World”, offers some of the most memorable dives, exploring astounding soft corals and diverse marine life, all on the world-famous Somosomo Strait. Divers can gear up for an underwater extravaganza like no other! With over 40 sites on hand, Paradise Taveuni offers divers like “The Great White Wall”, “Orgasm”, “The Zoo” and many other sites to reminisce on. Paradise Taveuni is a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort just north of Vuna Point at the southern end of Taveuni, Fiji’s third largest island situated in the north. Set on an elevated piece of land, Paradise Taveuni offers impressive sea and sunset views and plenty of strategically placed hammocks and sun lounges from which to enjoy them. The bures and vales are an incredible way to experience Fiji.

Paradise

The Somosomo Strait (Fijian for ‘good water’) has strong tidal currents, which provide a constant flow of nutrients idyllic for soft coral growth and diverse fish life and Taveuni is renowned as The Soft Coral Capital of the World for this reason. Paradise Taveuni is the only resort on the island offering diving on pristine Vuna Reef, and it also offers trips to the legendary Rainbow Reef - home to “The Great White Wall” which Jacques Cousteau named as “one of the Top 5 Dive sites in the world” after diving this spectacular site. Divers get to experience extraordinary formations of hard and soft corals and with a variety of deep wall drop offs and shallow drift dives, there is something here for everyone. Paradise Taveuni operates a full service dive shop with an experienced team that takes charge of all diving needs. Its fleet of dive boats are certified by the Fiji Island Maritime Association and equipped

with emergency supplies, first aid, oxygen and VHF, and each has a canopy and can accommodate 4-38 divers plus crew. Taveuni Explorer, the resort’s 15mt / 45ft cruiser is made of aluminum and features a galley, bathroom, freshwater shower, sleeping quarters and on-board bar. Powered by a twin 330 HP Iveco inboard jet drive and equipped with a ladder for ease of exit and entry, the cruiser takes 26 divers + crew – perfect for dive groups. Its 10-metre dive boat, Paradise Princess, is made of wood and fibreglass with a full length canopy, powered by twin 60HP Yamaha engines and can take 12 divers + crew. Paradise Taveuni has classified the dive sites into levels of experience. Level 1: Beginner diver. Maximum depth 18 metres / 60 feet, gentle with no current. Level 2: Intermediate diver, depths range from

20-25 metres / 70-85 feet, some current, some surface waves at times. Level 3: Advanced diver, depths up to 30 metres / 100 feet, expect current and exposed surface conditions at times. *The following are just some of the many dive sites available:

RADISE DIVE SITES IN PA House Reef and North of Paradise Dives Paradise Reef (House) Level 1 Located right in front of Paradise, in one direction it is a labyrinth of lava flow covered in stunning hard and soft corals, swarming in tropical reef species both

of reef fish, look down to Reef Sharks, and look out for Barracuda, Tuna and Turtles. Pinnacles Level 3 This deep seamount stands a little off Vuna Reef and attracts Manta Rays in season and other large visitors as well as smaller schooling species; soft corals are abundant and bright - thanks to the sea current passing by.

Rainbow Reef Dives shallow and bright, it is truly a photographers dream! This dive offers a fantastic training opportunity with a variety of terrain to make the most of a learning experience. Also the location for the resort’s night diving. Tomasi’s Delight (North) Level 1 Dive site is situated close to Paradise and a steep slope of hard corals hides many small treasures – Dwarf Lionfish, Cowries and Nudibranchs have all made their homes here, as well as an array of Featherstars and Sea Cucumbers.

VUNA REEF DIVES Cabbage Patch Level 1 Sheltered within Vuna Lagoon, you will dive down to an almost lunar landscape, this is a shallow dive that’s perfect for novices, cruise around the huge cabbagelike corals that sit on brilliant white sand and marvel at the marine life that finds a home amongst them. Orgasm Level 2 Vuna Reef at its finest! This wall dive faces Open Ocean and it is here you will see some favourite regulars. Look out for “Bruce the Shark”, various Rays and Napoleon Wrass, drift by schools of Spanish Mackerel or giant Tuna from the deep, this is truly an awe-inspiring dive site that never disappoints. Fish Factory Level 2 Stunning hard plate corals, lots of ambient light, multi-coloured patches of soft coral, giant clams and swarms of reef fish make this a popular site for photographers, beginners and experienced divers. Tavoro Cave Level 3 A spooky cave at 90f/27m includes swim - throughs, and lots of life. The topography of this site is striking: a sheer wall with plenty of gullies, look up into clouds 10

Rainbow Passage Level 2 In terms of fish life and soft corals, the sheer abundance on this Rainbow Reef site is incredible, the top of the reef starts at 40ft/12m and gradually slopes to 70ft/21m, this passage is covered by some unique and colourful soft corals not found in similar form or in this abundance anywhere else in Fiji. The Great White Wall Level 3 This Soft Coral Capital of the World offers an astounding wall of pure white soft coral. Clearly the world-famous Rainbow Reef ’s top drawcard. Experience a coral encrusted swim that leads onto the wall from the reef top, a dazzling myriad of colour and life inhabits this reef top and Manta Rays glide past with ethereal grace, on exiting the water from this site an awed silence will fall over the divers before excited chatter that lasts for days. A must-dive! The Zoo Level 3 An extreme marine experience, schools of Barracuda are common, look for them swimming above White Tip Reef Sharks resting on the sand, Moray Eels, Gropers and small Reef Fish are plentiful. Divers will glimpse the graceful Bronze Whaler Sharks patrolling the deep blue waters. Here, you’ll find out who’s who in The Zoo!

ou might know Taste Fiji as a gourmet café restaurant for its pastries, cakes and confectioneries, but they also offer delicious Cantonese small bites. Globally referred to as “dim sum”, the tiny servings evolved from the culinary tradition of China’s teahouses where travelers and farmers stopped to “yum cha” (drink tea) and savour tiny servings of different foods. It is a favourite in Chinese cuisine the world over. At Taste Fiji in Martintar, Nadi, yum cha is currently offered on the last Sunday of each month. Although not your traditional yum cha, owners Louise and Lee Acreman admit their version is a big hit and popular, especially among local patrons. At Taste Fiji, fresh dumplings are made using local ingredients with no preservatives. The kitchen churns out steamed and pan fried bite-size delicacies including chicken and pork steam buns; sesame stirfried vegetable spring rolls; pan fried chicken and chive dumplings; and Sui Mai (pork and shrimp dumplings). Suva Walking Tour Fish Walk & Cultural Heritage Excursion

V

isitors can soon hit the pavement on a walking tour that will reveal more of Fiji’s capital city than meets the eye. In May of this year, the Fiji Museum and stakeholders are expected to launch a Fish Walk & Cultural Heritage Excursion that will combine a guided walk through parts of the Central Business District (CBD) and the popular fish market, view heritage buildings and visit the museum. With the tour to begin at the Suva fish market, a guide will brief visitors of the numerous fish types, their seasonal content and unique narratives relative to Fiji alone. This will be followed by a walk through some of the capital’s main streets and taking in sights that include Suva heritage buildings; the former sites of the Colonial Sugar Refinery, Suva Grammar School and the foreshore and the existing Government Buildings, the re-opened Grand Pacific Hotel, Albert Park, Thurston Gardens and the Fiji Museum. After the 40-minute walk ending at the museum, visitors will be given an in-house tour. Fiji Museum offers a great journey into Fiji’s historical and cultural evolution. The tour continues with a 30-minute bus ride to take in sites that include Borron House and Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Other tour highlights may include traditional cooking demonstrations of produce from the sea and land, kava tasting and witnessing the changing

of the guards at the gates of the President’s official residence along Queen Elizabeth Drive. Children 11 years and younger will enjoy a free pass when accompanied by a paying adult. Walkers must be able to climb and descend stairs and walk on unpaved or uneven terrain. For information on pricing and details, contact the Fiji Museum. Tel: (679) 3315944. Fiji Pop Up Wedding is the same as a normal Fiji wedding in that it is a legal and binding marriage between two people who have fallen in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. But that’s where the similarity ends! With a Fiji Pop Up Wedding there is no guest list, or the level of stress that is associated planning a traditional wedding. It’s all about putting the fun back into your day and allowing you to really enjoy this special occasion. It can pop up at any time of the year, in the resort of your choosing, on a cruise stopover, on a day tour, or on a beautiful stretch of white sand beach. And, best of all, it all happens in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, and gives two people the opportunity to marry without having to “put on a wedding”. That doesn’t mean that you can’t take close family and friends with you if you want to - but instead of inviting them to a “destination wedding”.

It’s all about simplicity!

Keeping it Simple!

Firewalkers brave white-hot stones as visitors discover age-old cultures

W

ith 10,000 square metres of some of the best mix of dining, services and retail shopping anywhere in Fiji, The Port at Denarau also offers free entertainment. Situated at the heart of popular Denarau Island, The Port at Denarau is conveniently linked to resorts and services on the integrated island via regular transport services that include the Denarau Shuttle Bus, Denarau Taxis and the Yellow Bus. All visitors to the Port at Denarau can enjoy free entertainment from 6.30pm to 7.30pm every day. Cultural performances by Polynesian & Melanesian dancers, including the fire dance, are staged at the

36

open-air theatre every day. Every Saturday, villagers of Dakuibeqa in Beqa showcase their sacred fire walking skills. The island of Beqa, located southeast of the main island Viti Levu, is known for its legendary fire walking. Although a mystery as to why the people of three villages in Beqa have the ability to walk on white-hot stones without pain, the fire walking show has become a major tourist attraction among travellers. The Port at Denarau is where you can buy everything from a watch to a house. You can plan your entire day’s activity, rent a car, book a cruise, relax and have a massage or savour cocktails by the waters edge. Unwind on a sun-splashed deck or indulge in an enchanted evening to a backdrop of shimmering waters and relish a wildly casual environment and experience Fijian warmth and cultural diversity. A modern Nadi INT. Airport takes shape

I

nternational travellers are lapping up new experiences at Nadi International Airport’s new departures lounge boasting a modern look and world-class duty free shopping. The departures area is one of the first to be released to the public since construction on the Nadi Airport Terminal Modernization Project (NATMP) began in late 2014 and marks a significant step forward for the project. “We are building at an operational airport. Areas are being hoarded off, worked on and then released to the public in a staged construction process. With the release of the departures lounge, travellers get a sneak peek at what to expect when the entire terminal is modernized by end of this year,” said Airports Fiji Limited executive chairman, Faiz Khan. Once passengers clear customs and immigration at departures they get to experience duty free shopping with world-renowned brands provided by Tappoo and Prouds in a walk-through concept. The departures lounge also houses two global food and beverage brands - Burger King and Gloria Jeans. WH Smith, 40

Rip Curl, Jewellery Galleria and Nike operate specialty retail outlets. “The lounge provides a kid’s play area themed Fiji Adventure to enhance the family oriented tourists airport experience,” said Khan. There are also plans for a spa, non-denominational prayer room, new VIP lounges, a new look arrivals shopping and a completely new check-in hall to symbolise a modern Nadi International Airport. Westpac has opened foreign exchange outlets in departures and arrivals while mobile operators Digicel and Vodafone are set up at the arrivals concourse. Tour operators TTF, Rosie Holidays, Pacific Destinations and Tour Managers complete tenancies at the arrivals concourse that have been released thus far. Nadi International Airport’s new centralised rental car area at arrivals offer services by operators AVIS, Budget, Europcars, Bula Car Rentals, Hertz Rentals, Satellite Rentals and Carpenters Rentals. *Information & images supplied by Airports Fiji Limited.

LOCAL FLAVOURS When in Fiji, eat and drink as our locals do. Here are three must-try recommendations that are truly Fijian experiences.

Yaqona (Kava) Try the ceremonial drink yaqona or kava, made from the root of the pepper tree (Piper Methysticum). Many resorts, hotels and cruises offer either a simple tasting or a village visit where you can enjoy a bilo (bowl made from coconut shell) at a yaqona ceremony. Often described as Fiji’s ‘national drink’, drinking kava is also a social past-time. You’ll find bundles of the kava root piled high among packets of the powdered form in many municipal markets in Suva, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Labasa and Savusavu. Ready to mix travel-size packets of kava are also available at duty free shops and larger supermarkets. There’s even ready to drink flavoured kava – a relaxation supplement shot - formulated with all natural ingredients produced by Fiji’s Taki Mai.

LOVO No electric oven needed. Chicken, pork, fish and root crops: taro (dalo), yams and tapioca (cassava) are simply wrapped in banana leaves and then placed over heated stones and buried in the earth. Also referred to as ground oven or cooking pit, it is one of the simplest and most ancient cooking structures that effectively traps heat to bake, smoke, or steam food. After several hours, food is removed from the earth and you’ve got an authentic, savoury lovo that’s tasty. Best enjoyed with salads made form locally-grown vegetables and seasonal fruit. Ask for lovo at your resort, hotel or cruise.

Savour the water or juice of the young coconut which is commonly called bu. Coconut water is the nutritious clear liquid inside the green coconut and is said to be packed with vitamins and minerals. Nothing beats quenching your thirst on than bu juice straight from the nut. Then scoop out and eat the deliciously soft flesh.

SURFING YEAR-ROUND

F

iji is blessed with wonderful, tropical weather all year round with air and water temperatures in the mid-70’s to mid-80’s Fahrenheit. But did you know there are two distinct surfing seasons in these paradise islands? According to surf experts at Namotu Island Fiji, situated enviably close to the world-famous left reef pass Cloudbreak, the winter “cool” season produces the biggest waves, while the summer “warm” season has shorter swells and lighter winds. The type of Fiji surf that you’re looking for will determine what the best time of year to visit is.

Winter Surfing

Fiji’s winter runs from April through October. This is the time of year that low-pressure systems build in the Southern Hemisphere, south of New Zealand, and send consistently huge swells toward

44

Fiji. Surf conditions can range as high as 8-10 feet with 12-20 foot faces. Winter is the best time of year for experienced surfers to surf Fiji.

Summer Surfing

November through March is warmer, wetter, and more humid. Swells are shorter in duration, winds are lighter, and the weather is hotter. Expect glassy water and afternoon showers. Less experienced surfers will have an easier time surfing in Fiji during the summer, but don’t let the smaller waves fool you. Surfing in Fiji takes skill and confidence in your abilities, and comfort in the water. The breaks are all over coral reefs, which are not the best place for beginners to learn to surf in Fiji. *Source: Namotu Island Fiji. Photo: Joli Photos.

USEFUL INFORMATION EMERGENCY

POLICE, FIRE AND AMBULANCE

dial 911 WEATHER

Fiji can be enjoyed all year round because of its mild tropical climate. The dry season is from May to October. This is when the temperatures are cooler and there is less rainfall and humidity. The wet season is from November to April. Daytime temperatures average around 25oC (77oF), and humidity is generally high.

ATTIRE Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.

ETIQUETTE There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.

MONEY EXCHANGE There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.

in Fiji, but the national farewell

Fijian Verse

English Version

Isa, Isa, vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.

Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and forsaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula

Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu Kena kau wale na salusalu Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwatu Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.

O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; Oh, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
