Matamanoa
L
OOKING for an island escape? Adults-only? Matamanoa Island is home to an intimate and secluded, adults-only Fijian resort where you can experience a true gift of nature. Set in the beautiful Mamanuca group of islands approximately 30 kilometers west of Nadi International Airport, your escape begins when you arrive by high-speed catamaran, private speedboat or helicopter. The island boasts a volcanic cone jutting out of the azure waters of an unspoiled marine sanctuary. Clad with native bush and palm trees, the brilliance of the vegetation contrasts magnificently with the white curved sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Combined with nature, Matamanoa creates a haven for those who want to relinquish the pressures of a busy and stressful lifestyle.
8
Matamanoa is for those who dream of peace and tranquility. You can relax and let the warmth of the Fijian sun caress your body, so you too can feel a warm breeze drift over you. Hear the water lapping on the white soft sand forever transforming the patterns, then silence. The scent of the ocean is the last sense to render you a blissful rest. Lasting memories are made here. To achieve this special atmosphere, Matamanoa Island Resort adopts a year-round policy of not permitting day-trippers at any time and children under the age of 16 years. Matamanoa allows you complete days of rest or a wide range of leisure activities and cultural excursions: swim in the infinity pool and soak up the vistas; or snorkel in the beautiful Pacific Ocean; try your hand at tennis or sip long cocktails at the bar as you watch the sun set; experience

The island is an ideal destination to celebrate those special occasions whether it be a wedding, honeymoon, special anniversary, birthday or just a family and friends getaway! S
KIP the ordinary sailing charter and join the Thundercloud for a fun, relaxing and adventurous day on Fijian waters. With day cruises and charters on offer, the 42ft sailing trimaran Thundercloud is your ticket for an experience with a difference. Owned and operated by Fiji Surf Co., a Nadibased company pioneering Fijian surfing since 1995, the Thundercloud is the latest addition to its fleet of vessels and services. This is a local business that has explored most of Fiji and assisted in the opening of the country’s worldclass waves to the public in 2010. Fiji Surf Co., runs a surf shop, surf school, surf tours, surf travel; even manufactures Fiji-brand surfboards. A trimaran is a multihull boat that comprises a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls (floats). Historically, the first trimarans were built some 4,000 years ago by indigenous Polynesians and other Pacific Islanders. Aboard the modern and spacious Thundercloud deck, guests have the freedom of literally stretching out in super-comfy seats (bean bags). For convenience there is a galley, sleeping cabins/ berths and a toilet. Thundercloud is a mobile action sports operation that’s very different to anything currently on offer in Fiji. Subwing (fly underwater like a dolphin), sea scooters, jet boards, fly boarding and getting flung around on a 1-3 man tube towed by a jetski are just some of the adventurous toys on offer. Add Stand Up Paddle
(SUP), snorkeling, kayaking and an inflatable mini water park and you have an action-packed day. With the ability to host a maximum of 35 people, the Thundercloud’s main cruising areas are around lagoons, beaches and sandbars plus the world-class surfing turf of Tavarua and Namotu for sightseeing, surfing, kiting, SUP, snorkeling and swimming. Being mobile, the Thundercloud can bring the fun and action to you at your island resort. It will anchor in the shallows just off the resort beach or lagoon. Day cruises on offer: Get Chilled – BBQ lunch, soft drinks, free onboard Wi-Fi, non-motorised activities (SUP, kayak, inflatable tubes and snorkeling).
Get Amped
- BBQ lunch, soft drinks, free onboard Wi-Fi, non-and-motorized equipment (jet boarding, sea scooters, jetski rides, subwing, jetski tube rides and fly boarding). *Both cruises allow you to bring your own alcohol. This year Thundercloud will introduce yet another service with a difference - Splash N’ Bash - a monthly sunset cruise and party. he 2017 Fiji International will see the world’s top golfers play for the first time on a redeveloped Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course at Natadola, western Viti Levu. The tournament set for August 17th to 20th will coincide with the reopening of the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course following changes currently being made under the design of Fijian golf legend and three-time Major champion, Vijay Singh. The holes 1-6, 8, 9 and 11-16 are being revamped and in keeping with the theme of dramatic landscapes with breathtaking views. The August 2017 date is anticipated to attract some of the world’s best players during Fiji’s tourism peak season. “The Fiji International showcases Fiji to the world, so we want the world to see Fiji at its finest and what better time than in August,” said Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism. “We hope that the allure of Fiji in August along with a prime position in the world, the golf schedule will again ensure a quality field of

Professionals competing in the fourth edition of the Fiji International. “We also look forward to welcoming holiday makers to experience the Fiji International, which is Fiji’s biggest and most prestigious sporting event. Fiji International has over the past three tournaments attracted a large number of visitors to our shores, who are interested in golf. “In fact, our visitor numbers during the tournament month (October 2016) saw an increase in arrivals by 6.5% (or 73,595), proving that Fiji has grown as a golfing destination since the inaugural Fiji International,” added Mr Koya. The move to August will see the Fiji International, which is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, played in a less congested part of the global golf schedule which will help the event secure another strong field. “Now that the Fiji International is on the European Tour schedule we took a more global approach to scheduling,” said Peter O’Malley, chairman of PGA of Australia.

“We believe the August date will better enable some of the leading European Tour players to include the Fiji International on their playing schedules.” “The three stagings of the Fiji International have produced excellent champions in Steven Jeffress (2014), World Number 20 Matt Kuchar (2015) and World Number 27 Brandt Snedeker (2016) and we are looking forward to seeing who will emerge the champion in August 2017.” A Pacific paradise, the Fiji International also boasts some of the most unique hospitality options in world golf with the par-3 4th hole providing the perfect vantage point to watch the golf, whilst socialising on the beach. More than just a golf tournament, the Fiji International aims to leave a lasting legacy for golf in the Pacific region, with the PGA of Australia supporting initiatives to introduce and grow the game in Fiji. *Source: Fiji International.

Suva’s Albert O
ne of Fiji’s iconic landmarks, Albert Park located along Victoria Parade in the capital Suva, has been lovingly revived to international standards. This stunning aerial image using drone photography captures the historic and beautifully restored Albert Park Pavilion and Grounds, the Grand Pacific Hotel (large white structure) and parts of the city’s business district. After a multi-million dollar redevelopment, the park boasts new turf and the pavilion offers a prime destination for events with the ability to accommodate 1,000 people under cover and in comfort. Previously, the pavilion faced Thurston Gardens and the Fiji Museum. Now, it faces Government Buildings. Historically, the park was the site of a landing by the Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith during the first trans-Pacific flight from
Park
the United States of America to Australia in 1928. Also, it was the location of the first hoisting of the new national flag of Fiji on October 10th 1970. Albert Park has been home to numerous celebrations and events including the annual Hibiscus Festival. When in Suva, this neighbourhood is a mustvisit. Several hotels offer accommodation and hospitality and there’s the Fiji Museum, situated inside Thurston Gardens, where among many fascinating items is the last remaining fragment of the ‘Bounty’ from ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ fame. Adjacent to the museum property and located along Queen Elizabeth Drive is The Presidential Palace, the official residence of the current President of Fiji, His Excellency Major-General (retired), Jioji Konousi Konrote. *Photo: Petersen Fotography. SUSTAINABLE
lifestyle
I
n a world of impulse buying, use and throw, it is encouraging to see self-reliance and sustainability. When staying at or visiting many of Fiji’s island resorts and villages, you’re likely to witness and have the opportunity to learn how to weave coconut tree fronds or leaves into useable baskets, hats, small mats and even playful novelty items like the local grasshopper. The coconut tree – known universally as the Tree of Life because of the usefulness of every part of the tree – grows abundantly in Fiji.
30
Coconuts are known for their great versatility, as evidenced by many traditional uses. The fruit is a nutritious source of food, juice, milk, and oil that continues to feed and nourish generations of Fijians. Coconuts are also a staple in the local diet and two common foods cooked with coconut milk is Fish in Lolo and Lolo Buns (coconut buns).

aise your glass to everyday celebrations with a Fijian cocktail. We invite Fiji’s top bartender Viliame (Vili) Magitilailai (right) to share one of his favourite mixes. His choice of cocktail is inspired by the same name of the exotic national flower of Fiji, the Tagimoucia (pronounced tahng-ee-mowtheea). The rare flower whose scientific name is Medinilla waterhousei grows only in one place among highland rainforests on Taveuni, known as the Garden Island in northern Fiji. The Tagimoucia flower grows nowhere else in Fiji or in the world. Behind this unique flower is a Fijian legend, full of South Sea romance. The Tagimoucia flower graces the Fiji $50 currency note replacing Queen Elizabeth.

USEFUL INFORMATION EMERGENCY POLICE DIAL 917 AMBULANCE DIAL 911
WEATHER Fiji can be enjoyed all year round because of its mild tropical climate. The dry season is from May to October. This is when the temperatures are cooler and there is less rainfall and humidity. The wet season is from November to April. Daytime temperatures average around 25oC (77oF), and humidity is generally high.
ATTIRE Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.
ETIQUETTE There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.
MONEY EXCHANGE There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.

in Fiji, but the national farewell
Fijian Verse
English Version
Isa, Isa, vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.
Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and forsaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula
Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu Kena kau wale na salusalu Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwatu Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.
O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; Oh, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
