Bula & Cola Vina! Welcome to our 12th year of bringing you EXPLORE Fiji magazine – your window to a myriad of holiday choices and happenings in Fiji, the ultimate land of BULA (life, health). From mountain peak to coral reef and sky to ocean bed, there is constantly something magical waiting to be explored. Our Fijian archipelago of 333 charming islands conjures a sense of exoticism. A top destination on the global radar, Fiji has been called many things including an emerald jewel set in the heart of the South Pacific. Boasting fantastic tropical landscapes, many of our islands are surrounded by soft sandy beaches that are caressed by crystal blue waters. For some the allure of simply lying on a secluded beach or sandbank and doing absolutely nothing is bliss; however for the enthusiastic and action-minded there are countless leisure-to-adrenalin rush activities on offer to keep you going. In this issue, we find serenity at the exclusive Kaibu VatuVara Resort in the remote Lau group of islands (eastern Fiji) where it’s as pristine of a paradise as it can get with turquoise water, sandy beaches and playful pre-historic coconut crabs. Fiji is one the world’s premier diving locations, a bounty of diving sites brimming with underwater flora and fauna. Our centre pages feature the Eden of our Fiji waters. Blessed with an abundance of colourful coral reefs and a rich diversity of marine life, our magnificent aquatic world offers another side of Fijian beauty. To add to the popular ‘Only in Fiji’ expression, this magazine issue highlights the uniqueness of the Fiji International professional golf event to be held, again, at the stunning Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course at Natadola. This year, it runs from Oct 15th -18th. No other golfing tournament setting in the world currently offers what Natadola Bay does – that is, beachside seats to watch the world’s top players in action while being pampered with Fijian hospitality at the signature 4th hole, located along a stretch of white sand beach with breathtaking ocean views. While at Natadola, we checked into the refreshed Yatule Resort and Spa @ Natadola Beach for its soft opening. To set the scene, Fijian warriors (photographed) on horseback escorted guests at sunset to the ceremony.

ts exotic, surrounded by unmatched natural beauty and is just about as far away from civilisation as you could imagine. Welcome to tranquillity and privacy redefined. Arriving on the private island of Kaibu located in the mostly untouched Lau group of islands in eastern Fiji, you’ll be mesmerized. Kaibu
is home to the luxurious Kaibu VatuVara Resort – a one-of-a-kind private resort - perched elegantly within nature’s abundance. The exquisite Kaibu VatuVara Resort is circled by breathtaking reefs and lagoons where fishing and diving is world-class and
the exploration of the single most exotic island in the world – VatuVara. A short boat ride away from Kaibu, VatuVara is a breathtaking uninhabited tropical paradise seemingly at the end of the earth. Snorkel in the lagoon or simply float out half a mile from the beach and still touch the sandy bottom. After playing with prehistoric coconut crabs, relish a barbeque on the massive sandy beaches. VatuVara Island is 3km in diameter at the base of its 305m high summit and is referred to as “Hat Island” due to the summit’s shape. Although remote, the private islands of Kaibu and Vatuvara are only a 75-minute flight from Nadi International Airport and an hour from Nausori
Airport via a scenic flight on board the resort’s private Twin Otter. Luxury Kaibu VatuVara Resort nestles comfortably into Kaibu; its real estate and waterscape is nothing short of spectacular. Well-heeled guests find this a unique “home away from home”. Its beautifully-appointed accommodation comes with all food and beverages, internet access, trip to VatuVara, jet skis, trips to surrounding islands, fishing, diving and traditional entertainment - meke (song and dance) and kava ceremony. Walkable beaches, crystal-clear water speckled with multiple shades of the turquoise in the lagoon to the deepest blue of the ocean. The tropical greenery
is enriched by the many colours of beautiful plants and flowers native to the islands. The resort’s team takes meticulously attention to your needs in every detail. Cuisine on the island is fresh. Organic fruit, vegetables and spices are grown on the island. Seafood fetched off Kaibu reef is served the same day. There are no pre-set menus. What your palate desires, you will be especially catered for. Any cravings you may have that is not grown or available on Kaibu can be brought in by plane. Everything is designed around your tastes. Villa Delana, the main restaurant Valhalla and Jim’s Bar & Grill at beachside are fully operational. Two other majestic villas complete with pool and

massage facilities are being built and will be ready for guests by the end of this year. Also under construction are a golf course and a gym. The resort is managed by Robert and Lynda Miller who have had extensive experience in managing another private island resort in Fiji – Wakaya. The Millers will tell you that the experience on Kaibu is like no other, adding that none can match the privacy and the unique location that’s Kaibu and VatuVara. way from white sandy beaches and the sparkling blue ocean, mud baths in lush Fijian paradise is a popular must-do. It’s a reasonably priced activity that will have you immersing yourself in natural Fijian mud and warm spring waters. Locals believe the sulphur in the hot springs have healing properties. atch the world’s professional golfers tear up the course as you relax and enjoy a stunning beach and Fijian hospitality. At the signature 4th hole at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course in Natadola, western Fiji, this will be offered when Fiji hosts the second Fiji International from October 15th –18th 2015. A dip in the breathtaking Coral Coast waters between groups could even be on the cards. You’d be hard-pressed to find another tournament venue in the world that offers this unique opportunity. The Fiji International and Natadola Bay is set to be the next big player on the world stage of golf. The inaugural Fiji International held last year received

extensive interest worldwide, with a world-class field of players, guests and officials all singing Fiji’s praises as a host nation. With the tournament sitting on both the PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia and with broadcast around the world, it became the talk of the international golf industry. Apart from the golf competition, this year’s tournament is set for bigger, bolder and brighter festivities as tournament organisers, the PGA of Australia and Sports & Entertainment Ltd (SEL), intend to make the most of the idyllic location and utterly unique tournament venue.
Supported by the Fiji Government and Tourism Fiji, golf tourism is already taking Fiji to new markets. Fiji International organisers aim to secure a larger field, more quality international players and, of course, attract more spectators from around the world. PGA of Australia CEO Brian Thorburn said the October date provides significantly increased benefits for all stakeholders. “October is a more suitable month in terms of world golf schedules, as all Majors are complete and many Tours are slowing down or just getting started for new season. It is also early in the PGA Tour of Australasia summer of golf, and broadcasting Fiji is a fantastic way to start the televised events,” said Thorburn. “In addition, the 2015 Fiji International will be held the week after The Presidents Cup in Korea, where 24 of the world’s top ranked players will be
competing, and we will endeavour to have one or two of them playing in Fiji.” Measuring 6,556 metres from the championship tees, the par 72 Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course boasts up to five tee positions on each hole, providing an enjoyable challenge for players of all skill levels. Last year’s tournament attracted global professionals including World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh, three-time major champion Nick Price, and the number one players from China, India, New Zealand and Australia. It was won by Australian Steven Jeffress. For more information on the Fiji International and travel packages visit: www.fijiinternational.com Text & images supplied by PGA of Australia. Diving
A
great way to see Fiji is to slap on goggles, fins and an air tank. Diving is an amazing activity on offer across our 333 islands and atolls that are magically surrounded by a network of brilliant coral reefs. The dive season is all year round. Fiji is known as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World” and is also home to the “Great Astrolabe Reef ” and the “Great Sea Reef ” – the world’s third largest continuous barrier reef system. With around 1,000 24
species of fish and several hundred types of coral and sponges, Fiji offers a unique diving experience. With over 4,000 square miles of coral reef, this diving destination offers divers unparalleled marine biodiversity. If you feel like going beyond the beautiful reef dives venture into reef passages and come face to face with Grey Reef sharks, Silvertips, Hammerheads and White Tips.
Paradise
For an amazing experience at a slightly slower pace, you can swim with the giant Manta Rays. Between May and October these elegant creatures bless the waters off Manta Ray Island with a visit. Manta Rays are one of the largest fish in the ocean, some span as big as 6.5metres. Fiji is also home to five species of turtles, the most famous being the Hawksbill Turtle, which are now a protected species. Many resorts now have
conservation programs to look after these precious locals. Our moderate water temperature makes for year-round diving and the visibility is a photographers dream. Compiled by EXPLORE Fiji. Some information from Tourism Fiji. Photos supplied by Tourism Fiji Korea.

R
oyal Mokosoi - the newest Fiji beauty brand to hit the market - is a collection of body and hair care products derived from exotic flowers and oils whose home is a tropical South Seas paradise. Available exclusively at Jack’s of Fiji, one of the country’s largest national retail chains, the Royal Mokosoi label takes its name and inspiration from the Fijian word for the legendary flower of flowers, the golden, orchid-like bloom of the ylang ylang tree found deep in Fiji’s rainforests. The range includes body lotion, body butter, hair moisturiser, body oil, scrub and soap. They come in three fragrances. Mokosoi, named after the ‘flower of flowers’ is the blossom of the celebrated ylang ylang tree.

Date Line Fascination
O
n the island of Taveuni visitors can straddle time by firmly setting one foot in ‘today’ while the other stands in ýesterday’. This is where the International Date Line makes landfall. Although Taveuni officially observes one standard time, there is a marker and sign that observes the location of the 180º Meridian – the International Date Line. While the International Date Line is an imaginary line on the surface of the Earth that runs from the North to the South Pole, it defines the change of one calendar day to the next. It passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, roughly following the 180° longitude but deviating to pass around certain territories and island groups. Fiji is in fact one of a few places in the world where the line actually touches land.
On Taveuni, the idyllic “Garden Island” located in northern Fiji you can stand in both “today” and “yesterday” at the same time. The International Date Line is a fascinating concept that you can neither see nor touch. Fiji’s third largest island Taveuni has earned a reputation as the Soft Coral Capital of the World offering excellent diving opportunities, plus it boasts abundant flora and bird life, scenic coastlines and waterfalls. Village Visit F
or visitors wishing to get in touch with the i-Taukei (indigenous Fijian) culture, a visit to a village is a must-do. Most hotels, resorts, cruise operators and day-trip tour operators offer these visits. Guides will advise you with the protocols. Recently, our friends at Snapfiji.com embarked
on a relaxing 4-night Captain Cook Cruise voyage aboard the M.V. Reef Endeavour sailing around the beautiful Yasawa group of islands in northern Fiji. A memorable and exciting stopover was at Gunu Village, tucked away in a wide bay at the top of Naviti Island. Guests were treated to a meke – traditional

s drones are popping up everywhere, they provide a fresh ability to see the world. While some may say drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are an invasion of privacy, one thing is for sure: they capture stunning photography from the sky.
38
Across the world, aerial surf photography is taking off. With multiple lenses pointed seaward, the result of drones capturing surfers and mountainous swells alike is spectacular. In Fiji, Skyward Industries Limited is
licensed to conduct an array of aerial photography and cinematography. Recently, their drones hovered over Fiji’s iconic surfing paradise Cloudbreak located in the Mamanuca group (western Fiji). Here are a few new perspectives of the famous surf from above. Compiled by EXPLORE Fiji. Photos by Skyward Industries Limited.

ATTIRE
Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.
ETIQUETTE
There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.
MONEY EXCHANGE
There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.
TIPPING
While tipping is not encouraged here, it is your choice to decide whether to make a gratuity.

English Version
Isa Isa vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.
Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and foresaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa, Ni ko sa na vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; O, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua, Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula.
Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa, Ni ko sa na vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; O, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu, Kena kau wale na salusalu, Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwalu, Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.
O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; O, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa, Ni ko sa na vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; O, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
