Bula & Cola Vina!
Escape to Fiji - The phrase may sound redundant, however, for those who travel to our stunning tropical destination most certainly discover that Fiji is much more than just a daydream. Increasingly, Fiji stands out as a destination of choice for a myriad of reasons. Many come for a vacation, adventure, cruise, wedding, honeymoon, sports, reunion, conference, or simply to getaway and recharge one’s batteries. Our sun-kissed islands are synonymous with a South Pacific paradise, a nirvana set in vibrant coconut palms, flora and rainforests; sandy beaches and blue lagoons; blue skies and seductive sunsets; and technicolour marine-packed reefs. To top it off, Fiji is home to a culturally-rich, multi-ethnic populace with catchy Bula smiles and legendary hospitality. In this issue, we feature some new Fijian experiences. Holidaying in the laps of nature just got more inviting in a floating bure made for two. A definite first for Fiji and the South Pacific, Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa in Savusavu (northern Fiji) is making waves with its newly opened floating havens – where getting away from everyday life means being pampered. On the other side of Fiji and under the water’s surface, the curious are slapping on goggles and flippers and snorkelling with sharks off Kuata Island in the majestic Yasawa archipelago. Our Cover features Pacific art by leading local artist Meli Laddpeter. A recent BREATHE exhibition helped collect funds to support Meli who suffers from a chronic lung disease. We also bring you a series of delightful cocktail recipes starting with Fiji Rum Co.’s signature mixes. The centre-pages feature reflections by Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan on our nation’s victorious rugby stint at the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong 7s. There are also stories on tourism development and useful information, plus our Fiji map. Let me share some exciting announcements: * We are happy to announce that EXPLORE Fiji has been appointed the Approved Media Partner (Travel/Tourism Magazine) to the Fiji International golf tournament to be held at the idyllic Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course

Afloat in Paradise
I
n Fiji’s “Hidden Paradise” Savusavu a floating haven launches at sea on May 1st 2015. It’s a first of its kind debut in the South Pacific - multi-million dollar, adults-only Edgewater Floating Bures by award-winning Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa located on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island. The unveiling further elevates the resort’s guest experiences by offering the option of floating bures, combined with the benefits of the resort’s services and amenities. Eight unique, individually-designed Fijian-style thatched roofed accommodations with plantation pine and sustainably harvested wood depict the ultimate and intimate experience floating over the lagoon. Each 380-square-foot floating bure showcases traditional Fijian-style interior design with touches of nautical décor and accommodates up to two people. Each stay comes complete with local serenaders that sing certain nights at sunset during cocktail hour, best enjoyed from the privacy of your front deck. Owner Jack Young calls the new Edgewater floating bures “the perfect accommodation for those who want privacy and proximity to the sea.” 8
“This is a type of accommodation where guests can relax on a veranda with a daybed that overlooks the beauty of the water, kayak or snorkel from their own private deck, and have easy access to and from the lagoon right at their doorstep.” Ideally the new bures are positioned floating within the Koro Sun Marina on the adults-only
peninsula amid the resort’s pristine and lush tropical surroundings, warm clear blue waters and equally warm hospitality and interaction with Earth’s friendliest people. The resort boasts a truly native Fijian experience, dedicated to adventure, rejuvenation and romance. Couples can enjoy the beautiful setting of a coconut plantation with 160 lush tropical acres, and an unmatched waterfront resort experience, as featured in the ABC Network television’s reality series The Bachelorette. The floating bures feature a hand-crafted design with interior furnishings composed of highly polished raintree wood with primitive native Dongo wood accents similar to what guests would find in a fine classic yacht. Each bure features a built-in king size captain’s bed, adorned with a contemporary Fijianstyle bedspread; a built-in lounge; its own countertop
bar; refrigerator; air condition; soft indirect lighting and recessed reading lights; private deck for relaxation with daybed; and a private dock. Each interior space highlights screened glass louver windows allowing for natural light to shine through the bure with cream-coloured curtains. Each contemporary-styled bathroom with rain shower features raintree wood benches, countertops and Pure Fiji line of personal care amenities. Artwork depicts 19th Century Fijian mariners on catamarans in the open seas. Your stay comes complete with ground transportation pick up at Savusavu Airport, checkin service at the main Club House, a coconut oil foot rub/bath and a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, three delicious meals a day, afternoon tea, and a full range of non-motorized activities. Enjoy swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, rainforest trekking, stand up paddle boarding, handline fishing,
golf, lovo feast, (traditional Fijian cuisine) meke (Fijian song and dance), croquet, bocce ball, tennis, cooking classes, weekly church service, visit to a Fijian village school, and a tour of a nearby pearl farm. Indulge also in the Edgewater Beach Club offerings of a sandy beach right at the water’s edge with access to both the ocean and infinity pool. The Club has the Wai Bar, a swim-up bar serving tropical cocktails and local beers right from the pool’s edge and features two daybeds and many personal lounges perfect for sunning or taking a nap. The more adventurous may head out to the lagoon from the beach to view some of Savusavu’s most beautiful corals. In celebration of the one-of-a-kind floating bure accommodation, the resort is offering a new introductory rate and an “Afloat in Paradise” package. Contact the resort for details and bookings. ive into a brand new series of ‘Ultimate Encounters’ centred on snorkelling with sharks. South Sea Cruises’ 1, 2 and 3 day experiences transfer curious travellers from Port Denarau on western Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island to Kuata Island to snorkel with black-tip and white-tip reef sharks. Kuata Island itself is a hidden small gem in the majestic Yasawa Island archipelago, a two-hour scenic cruise from Port Denarau. A picture postcard beach, transparent turquoise waters, unusual tall rock formations and that same warm hospitality synonymous with Fijian people. There’s small rustic accommodation offering a Robinson Crusoe-style experience at Barefoot Kuata Island Resort where the snorkelling with sharks experience is based from. South Sea Cruises sales manager Lailanie Burnes described the new product as exciting and appealing to a range of adventure seekers. “Humans have a fascination with sharks and there is no doubt that despite our fear of them that is generally equalled by our curiosity about them,” Burnes said.
12
“Our snorkelling location is a shallow area of reef (about 4-6m tide dependent) making snorkelling and visibility easy and clear; and makes the experience accessible to a wide range of people – whether serious thrill seekers, families or just curious nature lovers,” she said. “White-tip reef sharks are the dominant species and are by nature inquisitive and won’t be afraid to check out our guests; whereas black-tips are by contrast timid. “Our guests will snorkel with experienced guides who’ve spent hundreds of hours getting to know the resident sharks and who closely monitor shark behaviour to ensure our guests’ safety.
“Snorkelers can expect to see from one to six sharks in the hour they’re in the water and while it’s unlikely that they’ll remember to look anywhere else, there are also spectacular corals at this snorkelling location.” If no sharks are sighted, South Sea Cruises will offer a complimentary cruise within three days so that guests can try again.

GREAT DIVES GREAT DIVES
When in Fiji, you’ll find exotic tropical adventures both above and below the surface. Here is a list of great dive locations noted by PADI (Professional Association Diving Instructors). • Great Astrolabe Reef, Kadavu – This barrier reef is the perfect example of Fiji’s amazing soft corals. Hosting many dive sites, the reef is one of the places where manta ray encounters are common. You can explore numerous channels and passages while viewing pristine coral formations teeming with tropical fish. • Shark Reef Marine Reserve, Pacific Harbour – This hard coral reef just off Viti Levu’s south coast is where guided shark encounters take place. More than eight shark species frequent this reef – bull sharks, tawny nurse sharks, white-tip, black-tip and grey reef sharks, sicklefin lemon sharks, silvertips and the occasional tiger shark. • Beqa Lagoon – Situated off Viti Levu’s Coral Coast, this large lagoon has nearly 100 different dive sites which are full of colourful reefs and alive with
tropical fish, multihued soft coral and other marine life. The water is generally calm, clear and warm. • Namena Marine Protected Reserve, Savusavu – This magnificent barrier reef is a protected marine reserve populated by brilliant soft corals, invertebrates and a variety of hard corals. It hosts several dive sites with bommies and pinnacles. You’re likely to see a few sharks and other pelagics, and may spy garden eels in the sand. • Somosomo Strait, Taveuni – A couple renowned dive sites occupy the narrow passage between Vanua Levu and Taveuni. You can swim through tunnels of soft corals and cruise walls with brilliant displays of white soft corals with colourful sea whips, gorgonian fans, sponges and crinoids. Look for pelagics off the wall and lionfish, octopus and morays in the shallows. • Bligh Waters – Between Fiji’s two main islands, the dive sites here are best visited by liveaboard. The water movement through the channels brings in nutrients to support a large array of marine life, from tiny fish to large predators.

ach person through life will find their own ‘somewhere over the rainbow.’ For some it’s the towering metropolis of New York and London, for others the snowy mountains of Japan and Canada. I was lucky enough to grow up in my ‘somewhere’, spending the childhood years in the lush rainforests and tropical beaches of the islands of Fiji. Despite waving Ni Sa Moce (goodbye) to Fiji for nearly a decade, I finally found the opportunity to return and to re-connect and engage with this natural beauty where I had grown up. With the help of this popular magazine EXPLORE Fiji, my partner Riley and I journeyed off the beaten track to indulge in some of the very best of what Fiji offers. We threw ourselves from an aeroplane at 10,000 feet into the skies of the majestic Mamanuca group of islands, landing on the sandy beaches of Denarau 16

Island with an experience neither of us will ever forget. We travelled east to the pristine beaches of Natadola along Viti Levu’s Coral Coast, sharing freshly cut coconuts and riding horses on the beach with the aid of a number of infectiously happy and friendly locals. A day trip out to Cloud 9, a bi-level platform floating atop a coral reef just a short distance from world-famous breaks like Cloudbreak in the Mamanuca group provided us an opportunity to laugh, drink, eat and swim in pristine waters before relaxing in front of an incredible sunset. The trip’s biggest highlight was saved until last when we journeyed north to reach the coastal villages of Rakiraki: universally acclaimed as the ‘Soft Coral Diving Capital of the World’. Strapping on our scuba tanks, we dived through spectacular underwater coral formations, swam with sharks and endangered fish alike.

Our final day in Fiji, we returned to the Mamanucas and spent our hours relaxing at the beautifully serene and iconic Treasure Island Resort hand-feeding the island’s turtle population and snorkelling over abundant coral reefs. There’s no place like home holds special meaning when you have a home like Fiji. To borrow from Fiji’s farewell song Isa Lei,
“Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting O’er the ocean your island home is calling” May you take the same joy from your Fijian holiday as we truly have. Vinaka!

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan reflects on Fiji’s victory in the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and (bias aside) how the best team won the 40th anniversary of the event in style.
FIJI reign supr
H
ong Kong and Tokyo were challenging for very different reasons. Hong Kong is, well, Hong Kong! In Fiji the build up to the tournament was eagerly awaited and there was plenty of pressure on the team to perform. That was good and I like that pressure on us as a team. Our chairman reminded us that if you win only one tournament then it better be Hong Kong! No one wanted to come home without the trophy. The masses boarded flights and converged on the stadium, cheering us on loudly all weekend. They also respected keeping their distance in the days leading into our games and the boys rested up well. Our crowd funding group, “South Bay Davui” presented us with two more “Game ready” machines the day of the Samoan game and we also announced a new additional sponsor, The Shangri-La Hotel Group. It was a short but really clean and effective buildup and a world away from the hectic and ultimately disappointing preparation we had 12 months prior. Nearly all the teams do a pre-tournament ‘blow out.’ I see teams in car parks, on fields near hotels, training grounds and stadiums, all having a session pre-tournament to get their second wind. Scientifically, there isn’t any concrete proof it works and with the increasingly heavy workloads on the pitch, we looked at this and decided to change what we are doing. No blow outs for us this year, instead a different routine that doesn’t expend the same amount of time or energy and it certainly seems to be working with for us with a 100% win record in every Day 1 this season. I think one thing I have certainly learnt in almost a decade coaching international sevens is do not overcomplicate matters. Simplicity in almost everything is key and deal with what is actually in front of you, not what you think might be. When I was with England, I got a bit of a reputation as a mad scientist, bringing in various strategies and tools that perhaps hadn’t been used before. Yet, all the things we did were to get measurements of whatever we saw as important. It was anything but crackpot or weird but might have looked it occasionally! Stuff like GPS was seen as new and innovative eight years 22
ago, yet it was a simple decision at the time to use it as it gave us simple, straightforward data we could use. Now it’s commonplace and the next body sensor network is almost upon us. Keeping it simple is same motto we have now. Be vigilant and watchful in how the players move, act, what their mood is etc. in the days following the first tournament. That, plus other physical measurements we take do lead you to adjust how you load the team with rest and work before the tournament. Experience is certainly a key factor in this and its vital for a good second week performance. Looking at the gap between the top 5 teams this year and the rest – the key fact is that they are regular cup teams. The others have been in then out the following week and few below the top five have hit consecutive cup quarters or more. On the pitch in Hong Kong, we were creating a lot of opportunities in attack and I could see a lot
reme @ HK 7s
games though not sure players share that view! It has been a strange arrival back in Fiji. Normally, I come back from a series pair of tournaments and it’s fair to say I am spent. It is more mental fatigue as anything else. As all the coaches will testify, you spend many hours over tournament weekend and between tournaments watching, analyzing and generally doing all you can to be as prepared as possible come game day. Yet, this time, I feel like I am ready to go to Glasgow now! Perhaps, it is knowing that the final two tournaments are close and a classic finish is possible. Maybe, we just want to continue to build on the inertia the last few tournaments have given us. Whatever it is – I certainly feel excited for what is ahead of us these next few weeks. We lead the statistics in nearly every area: • Won the most tournaments (FIJI 3 SA 2 NZ 1 ENGLAND 1) • Won the most games (FIJI 37, SA 34, NZ 32, ENGLAND 23) • Winning record against SA, NZ and ENGLAND (2-1, 4-0 and 4-1) • Longest winning runs this season (FIJI 18, SA 12, NZ 8, ENGLAND 3)
of our practiced defensive strategies beginning to surface. We had some twists and turns, as you would expect in Hong Kong but I was pleased we had such a hard route through to the final. I always feel having tough cup quarters and semi-finals really helps your campaign in the first of the paired tournaments. Week two it can be different, as accumulative fatigue sets in and the level of physical performances gets harder to match. I think our consistency all year helped us in the tight games and everyone was happy with the control the players are beginning to exert on the tempo and way we play. The final felt comfortable on the side of the pitch and the boys played some good football with the bench really making the impact we wanted. I am not saying finals are easy at all but twentyminute games are good for us and the way we play. We haven’t lost a final in the last two seasons and I would be happy to have more ten minute each way
However, the statistic that ultimately only really matters is the series table and there we are in second spot, behind an excellent Springbok side. Yet, that consistency encourages us for the next two legs. It looks like it’s a three horse race at the top with a possible clash between two out of the top three in one of those quarterfinals. A Cup quarter final for us in Glasgow will confirm our place in Rio next year. The seeding has meant that we have kept playing South Africa in semi-finals. In Vegas, HK and Tokyo, the two teams were seeded 1 and 3. Now the top four all get seeded, so it would make for a good argument for it to become 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 in the future. Personally, I feel it’s something we should re-look at as a group from next season. With the way the whole series has gone, I have no doubt the finale is going to be full of drama, deep breaths and at least one more, unscripted, final moment. The gates of horn and ivory await. ~ Ben Ryan – Vodafone Fiji 7s coach. *Photo: Fiji Rugby. 23

ART
F
Breathe
iji’s creative community recently raised funds at an art exhibition to support Meli Laddpeter – a prominent Fiji visual and graphic artist. The BREATHE exhibition was held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau to help Meli who suffers from a chronic lung disease, and is currently in Nadi Hospital dependent on oxygen tank. Aptly named BREATHE, the exhibition allowed both locals and tourists alike a rare opportunity to check out some of Fiji’s most talented artists. There was a vast display of lively and enigmatic artwork. Meli is an artist based in Nadi on the western side of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. Of part Fijian, Tongan, and Wallis Island decent, Laddpeter’s art is an exploration of his Pacific heritage and issues that are important to him. “I try to capture the moment of living within my art,” says Meli. “I appreciate the emotions that can be triggered by a creation of art, and am amazed by the Grand Creator who is behind all things.”

ATTIRE
Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.
ETIQUETTE
There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.
MONEY EXCHANGE
There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.
TIPPING
While tipping is not encouraged here, it is your choice to decide whether to make a gratuity.

CURRENCY
The Fiji dollar is the basic unit of currency. Notes available in $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coins: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and a new $2.

in Fiji, but the national farewell
Fijian Verse
English Version
Isa, Isa, vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.
Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and forsaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula
Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu Kena kau wale na salusalu Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwatu Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.
O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; Oh, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.
Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
