Message from the Publisher Bula & Cola Vina!

W

hen putting a magazine edition together, I always ponder about what’s new within Fiji’s tourism, hospitality and, to some extent, lifestyle circles. I have to say that this quarterly issue features a number of articles not only of new experiences, but as it turns out, they are the only one of its kind in Fiji. In fact, one of them is uniquely a first in the entire world. On April 8th this year, I had the fortune to witness the official opening of the long-awaited Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay situated on the western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island. As a Marriott Rewards member, it is rewarding to now have the choice to patronize a Marriott property in my own country. In the pages ahead we feature the following ‘firsts’ in articles, plus much more. The iconic “M” makes its inaugural entry into Fiji. Marriott International extends its brilliant brand to Fiji’s tourism portfolio with the

opening of the five-star Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay at the stunning serene bay of the same name. Our Cover features the resort’s massive man-made lagoon with its elegant overwater bure villas, a first for our Fijian mainland. The desirable Momi destination heats up with Marriott’s range of new and innovative offerings. (Page 8) A global first. Fiji’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) marked a unique achievement for our currency; something which no other country in the world has done when it launched a new $7 banknote recently. To commemorate the Fiji Rugby 7s (Men’s) team’s gold medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the RBF introduced the $7 note and a special 50 cent coin. Both are legal tender and in circulation. (Page 35) Fiji’s first island beach club promises guests fine cuisine, expertly crafted cocktails, and excellent service all within a tropical island

haven when it opens as Malamala Beach Club in the Mamanuca group of islands mid-2017. (Page 17) For the first time in history, the prominent Asian Tour will join the Fiji International (premier men’s golf tournament) to be held August 17th – 20th 2017 at the picturesque Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course at Natadola, western Viti Levu. The Asian Tour comes in as a new trisanctioning partner alongside the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour. In the world of golf, this is huge; a total of 30 members from the Asian Tour, which is the official sanctioning body for professional golf in the region, will feature in the August tournament. (Page 22)

I am happy to announce that our award-winning EXPLORE Fiji will continue as the approved Media Partner (Travel/ Tourism Magazine) to the Fiji International Golf tournament. We have been a sponsor of the prestigious event since it began in 2014. In this issue, we also feature articles on an Ayurvedic day spa, a Fijian canoe sailing tour on Suva’s harbour, a Chinese pavilion on popular Terry Walk in the capital, thrill rides on the Sigatoka River, a unique exhibition on female tattooing, an adults waterpark and new cocktails. Plus, we provide an events calendar, useful information, a map and more. As we whiz into the first half of 2017 (where did the months ago), I encourage you to start putting Fiji in your plans. Come experience and enjoy our Fijian hospitality and culture and get to know our people. If you’re reading this from somewhere else in the world, I hope our magazine connects you with our world and feeds your wanderlust to come explore our Fijian paradise. To visitors already here, Vinaka Vaka Levu (Thank you very much) for choosing Fiji and I hope you take home many wonderful memories to share with family and friends. With Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14th, I’d like to wish all mothers a happy and blessed day. Vinaka Vaka Levu, Connie

The project drew significant support from Auckland Museum, Fiji Museum, the Fijian Art Research Project, practitioners, supporters, friends and family engaged both on and offline. The Veiqia Project exhibition, curated by Tarisi Sorovi-Vunidilo and Ema Tavola, took place in New Zealand in March 2016 for the Auckland Arts Festival, and coincided with the Pacific Arts Association XII International Symposium. Its strategic alignment with the symposium was an effort to foreground the important dynamic between indigenous artists, Museum Collections, the past and the present, the ‘collected’ and the ‘collector’. Creative New Zealand facilitated the artists and curators’ wish to bring the exhibition back home to Fiji. Source: The Veiqia Project.

E

xperience a new way of enjoying the Suva Habour and surrounding reefs aboard a replica of the Drua, a traditional Fijian voyaging canoe. Tours by The Drua Experience aboard the contemporary 51-foot, double-hulled ‘i Vola Siga Vou’ are crewed by traditional wayfinders and the craft is compliant with all maritime safety regulations. A little over a hundred years ago fleets of canoes dominated the Pacific, and the greatest of all was the Fijian Drua. Larger, faster and more agile, these vessels were revered across the ocean. Offering a piece of living history, The Drua Experience is developed by Sailing for Sustainability (Fiji) Ltd. It grew out of twin passions of developing new sustainable sea transport solutions for the Pacific and revitalising traditional Pacific seafaring culture. Launched in late 2016, the ‘i Vola Siga Vou’ is reviving the traditional sailing culture in Fiji. The eco-charters provide sustainable employment to the next generation of traditional sailors, wayfinders and voyagers and it introduces people to another way of viewing beautiful places between the wind and the water. The tour offers three options straight out of the heart of Suva to suit time and budget.

Chinese pavilion graces Terry Walk A

Chinese pavilion is now a delightful addition to the lively central business district of the capital city Suva. The Fiji-China Friendship Pavilion (photo on next page) is located on the pedestrian thoroughfare Terry Walk, close to the corner of popular Cumming Street. The pavilion represents the enormous contributions the Chinese community has made to the development of Fiji since their arrival 162 years ago. Launched on Chinese New Year’s Day (January 28th) this year, the pavilion is a gift from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China to the Fiji Chinese community in celebration of their milestone anniversary of residency in Fiji. Built of Chinese architecture, the marble and granite pavilion was pre-fabricated in China and assembled in Suva.

34

The covered structure without surrounding walls is a cultural attraction and it provides shade and a place to rest amid the city’s hustle and bustle. Strategically located the pavilion is a symbolic landmark. During the early years of Suva’s history, Cumming Street and the surrounding areas were occupied by Chinese businesses: general merchants, tailors, carpenters, jewelers, restaurants and tea rooms, said Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese Association of Fiji. “It used to be called a Chinatown in those days as families also lived here, just above their shops. The area used to be occupied by most of the Chinese community therefore it is so appropriate that the pavilion is located here, in the midst of so much Chinese history.”

Fiji 7s Olympians feature on new money

A

new $7 banknote and 50 cent coin honouring the historic Fiji Rugby 7s Olympic Gold Medal win are now in circulation. The iconic and unique $7 banknote, the only such circulating bill in the world, and the special 50 cent coin feature the Osea Kolinisau-skippered Olympic champion team and the Olympic coach Ben Ryan. Fiji won its first-ever Summer Olympic Games gold medal in Rio, Brazil in August 2016 after demolishing Great Britain 43-7 in the final in a brilliant display of sevens rugby.

A first for Fiji currency, the front side of the $7 note has vertical (portrait) orientation and the reverse side is horizontal (landscape). Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Barry Whiteside said the design, form and features of the new legal tender are truly iconic and are sure to become collectors’ items. USEFUL INFORMATION EMERGENCY POLICE DIAL 917 AMBULANCE DIAL 911

WEATHER Fiji can be enjoyed all year round because of its mild tropical climate. The dry season is from May to October. This is when the temperatures are cooler and there is less rainfall and humidity. The wet season is from November to April. Daytime temperatures average around 25oC (77oF), and humidity is generally high.

ATTIRE Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.

ETIQUETTE There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.

MONEY EXCHANGE There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.

in Fiji, but the national farewell

Fijian Verse

English Version

Isa, Isa, vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.

Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and forsaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula

Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu Kena kau wale na salusalu Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwatu Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.

O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; Oh, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
