here will your next Fiji adventure be?

Deciding where to stay, eat and play can be a daunting task with the plethora of choices available today. Our Fijian paradise is a fantastic destination for almost any occasion; what you say is the ideal experience is based on your interests and budget. However, one thing is for sure, Fiji is much more than just sun, sea and sand. If your holiday time permits, we recommend travelling around the country or at least spent time in several locations rather than your entire stay in just one. Out of the 333 sun-kissed islands, 110 are populated and there are escapades for everyone from exclusive private island luxe resorts to rustic eco-retreats. Another great way to discover the islands and immerse yourself in our local culture is on a leisurely cruise.

For inspiration we offer a sampling of relaxing and adventure holidays in this edition. We hope you enjoy our selection of articles. Denarau Gem (page 8) features Radisson Blu Resort Fiji, the family-friendly resort noted for pampering travelers since it opened a decade ago and is voted Fiji’s No. 1 Family Resort by TripAdvisor. Further north-west, off the beaten track in the iconic Yasawa group of islands is Waitui Basecamp, an eco-resort we showcase in Adventurer’s Hideaway (page 13). Those looking to get literally off the grid and back to basics may find bliss in Namosi Province’s tropical mountain valleys as they Unplug @ Namosi Eco Retreat (page 36). Fiji is a hot destination for wedding celebrations and vow renewals, with venue options tailoring to every taste and budget firmly on the rise. An Island Wedding

S

ay ‘I Do’ on your own private and picturesque Fijian island. With Captain Cook Cruises Fiji’s new Tivua Island wedding package, the magic begins as soon as the bride and groom and their guests set sail from Port Denarau on the magnificent tall ship Ra Marama or the luxurious sleek sailing catamaran Fiji One, to the island of Tivua - an atoll surrounded by a circle of white sandy beach and 500-acres of coral gardens located in the Mamanuca group of islands. Romance is intrinsic to the spirit of Tivua and on arrival at the small island, the groom and guests make their way to where the ocean meets the sand and where their tropical beach wedding is set up and waiting, while the bride is whisked away to a private bure to prepare for the ceremony. A wedding to be remembered, the bride walks down the aisle to the sounds of a beautiful Fijian singer and guitar accompaniment, before exchanging vows as the sun sets over the sparkling ocean. Celebrate your marriage with a tropical island buffet feast, delicious wedding cake and a threehour beverage package including house beer, wine and soft drinks, before sailing back to Port Denarau. Captain Cook Cruises Fiji is also offering a honeymoon bonus. For weddings of 50 guests or more the bride receives half price on a three, four or seven-night cruise honeymoon aboard the Reef Endeavour and for weddings of 80 guests or more the bride’s honeymoon cruise is free.

6

Priced at FJ$7,260 for 30 guests the sevenhour package includes a wedding ceremony and reception in absolute paradise! Wedding package is priced at FJ$242 per person based on a minimum of 30 guests. Includes a 90-minute cruise to Tivua from Port Denarau on either tall ship Ra Marama, Spirit Of Pacific or sailing catamaran “Fiji One”; a dedicated wedding planner to ensure the day is perfect and finalise the wedding license; use of a bure for the bride to prepare; a marriage ceremony performed by a celebrant on Tivua’s tropical beach setting with a Fijian singer and guitarist accompaniment; bride’s teardrop/trailing orchid bouquet; groom’s buttonhole flower; box of petals; bottle of sparkling wine; wedding cake; marriage certificate; beverage package including house beer, wine and soft drinks and an island buffet meal with tea and coffee. Denarau Gem

By Connie Chew, Publisher

When it comes to finding the ultimate family resort in Fiji, one Denarau property will beg you to stay a while longer than you initially planned.

I

sland living with all the modern trimmings comes easy at the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji Denarau Island. It’s no wonder this oasis is the hot pick among family getaway favourites. For two years running, TripAdvisor has named Radisson Blu Resort Fiji the No. 1 Family Resort in Fiji. The award speaks volumes for the 5-star resort that celebrated its 10th anniversary in June this year. Suitably located just 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji enjoys an ideal oceanfront address on Denarau Island situated in western Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. Set amid 10 acres of landscaped tropical gardens, waterfalls and a private beach with pretty views of the Mamanuca Islands in the distance on one end and championship golf course greens on the other, it is easy to be dazzled. But looks alone is not what’s attracting visitors from across the world and locals to this corner of the leisure precinct.

8

On a recent visit to Radisson Blu to exhale, we discovered that the Denarau enclave is an invitation for relaxing holidays, adventure, weddings, conferences and special events. Our stay was enriched by the resort’s quality amenities and furthermore by the passionate and engaging staff. We made ourselves at home in a spacious one-bedroom suite complete with kitchenette, laundry, a courtyard with lagoon views; steps away from a stretch of swimmable beach. The suite offered a separate living room with TV (also one in the bedroom); bathroom with a deep soaking European-style tub and walk-in shower, complimentary toiletries and other habitual comforts. The living room sofa was a lounging pad by day and a pullout bed at night for the third member of our family. After each active day in the sun, it was comforting to withdraw from the outdoors into the suite’s cool and cozy living room where we caught up on quality time, watched TV and shared #TruBlu moments on Instagram. The free WiFi across the whole property is an absolute bonus.

So are the accessible ramps and wooden walkways that make moving around a breeze for families with strollers and wheelchairs. With the choice of guest rooms (suitable for couples, business executives and solo travellers) and one and two-bedroom suites (ideal for families and groups), Radisson Blu Resort Fiji boast some of the largest accommodation space on Denarau, each featuring a private balcony or courtyard. The two-bedroom suite combines a guest room and a one-bedroom suite to create an even more spacious retreat with private entrances for both rooms. All suites include views of the golf course, garden or lagoon pools. Suites allow you prepare meals in its well-equipped modern kitchen or order-in and entertain family and friends in the dining area. We were particularly

impressed with the on-time delivery of our hot meals with desserts when we ordered in-room dining. Another convenient in-room feature is the washing machine and dryer. You can do holiday laundry any time of day. No time for laundry? No worries, the resort offers an express laundry service for a fee. For families with a wish list for activities to keep the little ones occupied; generous and always-available supply of children-friendly food (buffets and half price meal menu); and spacious family-friendly sleeping arrangements, Radisson Blu has you covered. Children ages one to three eat for free. Plus, every child aged four to 12 is personally welcomed by a friendly Fijian warrior at check-in and is automatically recruited into the popular Blu Banana Club where privileges include discounts on select activities, half price meals and drinks, and loose hair braids. Every evening around six, barefoot little girls and boys with painted faces, dressed in grass skirts partake in a torch lighting

9

ritual that get raves from family and other guests. Children stay entertained throughout the day whether it’s at the kid’s club or poolside. With four lagoon swimming pools (including a family lagoon, shaded children’s pool, and private adults-only relaxation zone) and Fiji’s only whitewater tunnel slide, the entire family is sure to get in a lot of swimming, splashing and even a suntan to share on Snapchat. The pools are a central hangout where grownups and children can linger for hours under big shade sails that provide protection from the Fijian sun. Radisson Blu is the only Fiji resort with temperaturecontrolled (heated / cooled) pools; guests can be seen enjoying the water till late during the cooler months. Book a couple’s massage in the Harmony Retreat Day Spa beside the waterfall while the toddlers are in the care of capable nannies and older teenagers are out snorkeling, kayaking and paddle boarding. Radisson Blu offers six unique dining experiences. During our (short) two-night stay we took our meals (breakfast and lunch) at the Blu Bar & Grill, a beachside day-to-night destination and dinner at Denarau’s No.1 restaurant (TripAdvisor), the charming Chantara (meaning Moon Water) where specialty chef Jasmine from Bangkok and her team serve up authentic Thai cuisine infused with local ingredients. A great spot to sip refreshing lemongrass and mint-

10

filled Thai cocktails on the open deck in the lobby level with panoramic view of the resort’s iconic cascading waterfall and lagoon pools that form a unique aqua wonderland. In the evening, Chantara is a popular, often bookedout dinner choice. It is also where you can start your day with a Bula Breakfast followed by a light international and Pan Asian lunch. On our next visit, we will try out Neptunes, noted for its fish and chips; upmarket Masima (Salt in Fijian) for Italian cuisine; Signature Tables for a sophisticated dinner under the stars with personal butler and Lomani Wai, for a threecourse dinner in a lagoon pool. For true Blu local entertainment, catch the daily lineup that alternates between the meke (Fijian song and dance), fire show, cultural dances and live bands including jazz. Ideally close to an 18-hole championship golf course, Port Denarau and a marina - the starting point for day trips to nearby islands, surfing, diving and fishing - there’s lots to do beyond the property. Clock in back at the resort in time for a dip in the pool, cold beers at the swim-up bar and pre-dinner cocktails at sunset. ijian for ‘village’, KORO is an oasis for adults to escape and unwind in a private area within the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa on Denarau. KORO features a range of leisure facilities including two stunning beachfront pools, a pool bar, all-day dining and live entertainment every night. KORO’s restaurant offers breakfast and all-day dining options where guests can enjoy a shared plate inspired menu while the bar serves up innovative cocktails, an extensive wine and champagne selection, as well as international and local beers, chilled to perfection.

16

Completing the adult-only zone is a purposebuilt day spa and gym located alongside the KORO complex. The spa is a sanctuary with dedicated lounge areas, luxurious treatment rooms and an outdoor plunge pool. Guests can also choose a poolside spa pavilion accompanied by South Pacific sea breezes. For those wanting a good workout, the state-of-the-art gym offers the latest equipment. Martin Rogers, general manager, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, said, “KORO was created as the ultimate adult’s playground and is available

for all in-house guests 18 years and over to enjoy free of charge. We recognise that many guests want to enjoy a relaxing, private holiday so we designed KORO to offer all this and more. Open daily from 7:30am to 10pm, it’s a place adults can relax poolside with friends over a delicious cocktail on one of KORO’s daybeds and loungers while soaking up the beautiful ocean views.” With the addition of the dedicated adultonly facility, the existing central pool amenities (alongside Nuku Restaurant) that were split into separate adult and family zones, are now all dedicated to family use – doubling the size of the family recreation pool area.

PADDLING FOR HEALTHY OCEANS Words: Rev. James Bhagwan

S

tand Up Paddle-boarders and outrigger canoe paddlers have teamed up to create a series of events that combine enjoying fresh and saltwater paddling and active care for the environment. The River to Ocean paddle series is an annual event organised by VITI SUP & VA’A - a collaboration between the Uto Ni Yalo Trust, Fiji Outrigger Association, Yachting Fiji and Fiji Surfing Association. The group promotes healthy living through non-motorised water sports and also raises awareness on the need to care for our rivers and oceans. The River to Ocean series began in May this year with a 23km paddle from Draubuta Village, down the Rewa River and across Laucala Bay to Fiji’s capital city of Suva. Before embarking on the picturesque paddle down Fiji’s widest river, over 70 paddlers and a team from Bank of South Pacific’s “Go Green Initiative” held an environmental awareness training programme for Draubuta villagers and led a river-side clean up. In June, there was a 12.5km paddle from the

Navua River to Uprising Resort in Pacific Harbour. “The purpose of the paddle is to not to race but to highlight the need to play our part in keeping our rivers and waters free of plastic bags and plastic products’, said Colin Philp, president of Fiji’s traditional voyaging society, the Uto Ni Yalo Trust. “It’s also a great way to see some of the most beautiful parts of Fiji from the water.” This year VITI SUP & VA’A organised the first event on the planet for World Oceans Day with a sunrise paddle and clean up along Suva’s foreshore and a prayer for the ocean. These events have been highly-praised by Fiji’s Ocean Champion and Minister for Fisheries, Captain Semi Koroilavesau. The River to Ocean series provides a safe environment for beginners and seasoned paddlers to enjoy a day on the water paddling in different locations around Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. COOKING UP Change H

ats off to The Coliseum for the first-ever Master Class Fiji gourmet event – all in the name of boosting equality and gender balance across Fiji’s professional kitchens. Despite the fact that women make up the vast majority of home cooks, they lead just a tiny percentage of top kitchens in the country’s tourism and hospitality industry. Aiming to create equal opportunities for female chefs, The Coliseum with support from event partners and sponsors, put on a funful

four days of cooking demonstrations. The foodie-affair (held in late May and early June) kicked off The Coliseum’s program for culinary scholarships. By late July, the first of the Master Class Fiji Culinary Scholarships was launched, opening up opportunity for female chefs to elevate their skills. The successful applicant will benefit from a three-month stint at the renowned culinary school Le Cordon Bleu-

Sookmyung Academy in Seoul, South Korea, starting in October this year. The Sookmyung Academy was founded in 2002 with a joint vision of training and mentoring global leaders of the culinary industry. The upper level of The Rhum-Ba at Denarau Yacht Club on Denarau formed the stylish backdrop for the gastronomic Master Class Fiji event; which was well attended by food enthusiasts, novices to aspiring chefs and executive chefs, students,

industry professionals, volunteers, sponsors and even stay-home-mums. With hats on, and gloves off, chefs put competition aside as they cooked up a storm and the results were pieces of culinary art. Both chefs and hospitality experts shared tips and techniques, even trade secrets that participants could transfer to their kitchens and businesses. Every class was entertaining with everyone getting hands-on experience with real action

while working alongside classmates, recipes and the chance to eat and drink their creations. There was a real buzz and energy from all the presenters - chefs, restauranteurs, a chocolatier, a nutritionist, a mixologist, a wine director and even a rum developer. A good number of women who joined the daily sessions vowed to sharpen their skills as home cooks. Demonstrations were eagerly watched by all in the audience and thousands of others through live-streaming. The Coliseum is an event, accommodation and hospitality organization with its Fiji office in Nadi and one in Australia and lead by its managing director Valentin Corchado with 25 years of hotel and restaurant management that includes Europe, South East Asia and Asia Pacific.

ARTEFACTS

T

raditional Fijian artefacts provide glimpses of Fiji’s ancient culture and fascinating past. Fans and baskets made from pandanus and coconut leaves, along with the fibre from coconut husks (sinnet) were some of the daily life necessities then, as they are now in the Fijian village. A huge range of wooden weapons were used by Fijian warriors in warfare and in ceremonies. Today, you can buy Fijian artefacts from handicraft centres in the cities and towns, roadside kiosks, select retail stores and from craftspeople who sell their wares in select resorts and hotels across Fiji. Unplug @ Namosi Eco Retreat E

scape to the tropical mountain valleys of Namosi Province where you can unplug at an eco-retreat, staying in traditional Fijian “bure” style thatched roof cottages perched on the edge of the crystal-clear Luva River. Namosi Eco Retreat offers an ideal getaway from the wired world (no phones, internet or TV); a place to relish nature by getting “back to the basics” of life, where many of the nearby Navunikabi villagers live sustainably off the land. The eco-retreat is an authentic experience, combining culture and adventure with agritourism. Situated in the lush highlands of Namosi Province on Fiji’s largest island Viti Levu, the retreat is a 1½ hour drive from the capital Suva or three hours from Nadi. The reconstructed

traditional village offers accommodation in bures and a valenikana (dining area) handcrafted using Fijian building methods. Home-grown, organic local food is served, especially root crops, vegetables and fruit that are provided by farmers each day, plus fresh fish and prawns from the river whenever possible. Guests can also help harvest and cook food in the authentic way. By day you can keep active with mountain hiking, horse riding, bilibili (bamboo raft) making and rafting, weaving and craft making, bird watching, and farming (even help gather food for dinner). At night, relax and enjoy kava and talanoa (storytelling) sessions. *Compiled by EXPLORE Fiji.

USEFUL INFORMATION EMERGENCY POLICE DIAL 917 AMBULANCE DIAL 911

WEATHER Fiji can be enjoyed all year round because of its mild tropical climate. The dry season is from May to October. This is when the temperatures are cooler and there is less rainfall and humidity. The wet season is from November to April. Daytime temperatures average around 25oC (77oF), and humidity is generally high.

ATTIRE Local dress in Fiji varies. Decent casual, light clothing is recommended. Often you will hear people refer to “Bula” attire, which is Fiji’s equivalent to Hawaii’s “Aloha” dress code. Visitors are asked to be careful not to offend local sensibilities. Bikini and ultra-brief swim wear is acceptable at hotels/resorts but not when shopping in towns/cities and visiting villages.

ETIQUETTE There are a few places in the world where visitors are as warmly welcomed as they are in Fiji. But there is a protocol to follow. In a Fijian village, a house is a home and visitors aren’t expected to poke their heads inside. If invited inside a bure (local cottage), it is considered polite to stoop, to take off your shoes, keep your voice down and sit cross-legged on the floor. Shorts, swim wear, caps or hats aren’t normally worn inside a village. If offered a bowl of kava, drink it, unless you have been advised not to for medical reasons. Kava drinking is an important ceremony and a past time. If you intent to visit a Hindu temple or Muslim mosque, ask a local adherent first. It is offensive to walk into a mosque with shoes on.

MONEY EXCHANGE There are specialist bureau de changes around the country but foreign currency and travellers cheques can usually be exchanged at any bank.

in Fiji, but the national farewell

Fijian Verse

English Version

Isa, Isa, vulagi lasa dina Nomu lako au na rarawa kina Cava beka ko a mai cakava, Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.

Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and forsaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua Kena ca ni levu tu na ua, Lomaqu voli me’u bau butuka Tovolea ke balavu na bula

Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; ‘Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.

Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu Kena kau wale na salusalu Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwatu Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.

O’er the ocean your island home is calling, Happy country where roses bloom in splendour; Oh, if I could but journey there beside you, Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa, Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.

Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; Oh, forget not, when you’re far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva.
